HO HO HO we’re nearly there! Grubbing around in the loft to blow the dust off last year’s decorations (seems like yesterday we were last there); and waiting for the shops to cave in and discount the wrapping paper so we can tussle with the cats and sellotape to lovingly perfect our parcels to go under the tree. The Christmas cake has been made to Great Uncle Charles’ recipe (he was a baker by trade), and the cards are bought. When to post them? I usually wait until the first one to us plops through the letter box then we’re off - the Christmas season has begun! The stars of Stagecoach 2013 has been another exciting year for Stagecoach Dulwich with students performing in the West End, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, on TV and at The National Theatre. Students had the opportunity to perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in February as part of the Children’s Book Awards, where they enjoyed the chance of meeting David Walliams who won one of the categories for his book Gangsta Granny. Students from Dulwich also appeared at Her Majesty’s Theatre in June, performing The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street - an extract from Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sweeney Todd. Ed Lyness is currently performing in Emil and The Detectives at The National Theatre, while his Stagecoach classmate George Hill is also on TV at the moment in the new Channel 4 comedy Man Down. Meanwhile Stagecoach weekend classes and holiday workshops continue to be very busy and students have enjoyed taking part in the shows Our House, Starlight Express and Peter Pan. Theatre tots at the abbey
New performing arts classes
Theatre tots added a very special client to their list when they were commissioned to write and produce a show about Edward the Confessor; former king of England, and the man responsible for building the first Westminster Abbey. Theatre tots director Laura Sydonie confessed: “It was a tall order to fit 50 years of history into a 30 minute show with singing and dancing, all suitable for children under seven and their families”. Composer Bex Hughes joined Laura in developing the show with performers Matt Reynolds and Dan Burman, producing a script which had to be approved by the Dean of Westminster Abbey, who also introduced performances in the Abbey gardens. Theatre tots are now working on a new commission with Westminster Abbey and Westminster archives for 2014, based on Lord Cloudsey Shovell and the discovery of the meridian line in Greenwich. A large section of this story is based in southeast London, in Bexley and Crayford so will involve local research. Theatre tots launched in 2007 with a few sessions in southeast London, and has grown to offer sessions to schools, nurseries and children centres; weekly parent and carer sessions; interactive touring shows; published books; parties and sessions for children with additional needs. East Dulwich Academy of Music and Drama is the newest place to go for the bright young stars of tomorrow. Offering each budding musician two and a half hours of inspiring music tuition for a very reasonable £25 a week, children learn not only a main instrument but also theory, aural, keyboard skills and play in an orchestral ensemble to support their overall musical development. Starting by offering brass, woodwind and keyboard lessons to children aged between 8 and 13, strings, vocal studies and larger world ensembles will follow soon after. Each child will experience the benefits of being part of an ensemble as well as the fun that can be had making friends and playing music socially. For £10 per week children are able to study drama with an experienced and dynamic tutor. There are two drama groups, age 8-10 and 11-13. These groups receive 45 minutes’ drama tuition in preparation for their LAMDA exams (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art). Both classes then come together each week for a further 45 minutes, to work on a performance piece to showcase the skills they are developing. The Academy will launch on 11 January on Saturday mornings at Goose Green Primary School, supported by Goose Green Education Trust. The first session is free when enrolling for the Spring term. Olé Kids are winners Lola Fernandez and Vanessa RamÌrez are understandably proud that their company, Olé Kids, has won the runner up award as ‘Fulham best business’ in this year’s Hammersmith and Fulham business awards. While based in Fulham, Olé Kids work in the whole of London, bringing Spanish and Latin culture to families. The company also acts as a port of call to teachers coming over from Spain and who are initially a bit lost on how to get into the Spanish education system. Charlton Toy Library has secured funding to run its outreach programme for the next three years. This is thanks to Help a Capital Child, which kick-started the outreach programme with a grant of £2,178, and BBC Children in Need pledging to fund the project with a grant of £27,959 over the next three years. The Outreach programme visits four women’s refuges in the area, taking clothes, books, toys and games to children who have often fled their homes and have nothing. Fundraising continues to maintain the service at Charlton House where the library runs a low-cost borrowing service of toys, books, DVDs, CDs, baby safety equipment, dressing up clothes, games puzzles and lots more. It also runs play and stay mornings three times a week, along with free music and craft sessions for users. Ah, memories of Christmas Past. Shuffling through last year's cards, I am suddenly reminded of all the posed family pics that my old man put us through annually to print up as festive greetings. Possibly the most excruciating one is of me and my siblings in ballet shoes, arms in fifth, tinsel round our heads - the cuteness of my younger sisters serving only to emphasise the supreme awkwardness of a solemn twelve year old who really should be wearing a bra by now. On another we are all raising a toast next to the Christmas tree, my glassy expression betraying the fact that I’d just got an electric shock when I'd plugged the lethal fairy lights in. Every Christmas, mantelpieces up and down the country featured a frightful Crow family scene that often included a six year old waving a schooner of sherry. I shudder to think of the collective snigger when the postman arrived. THE DRUNKEN COOKBOOK by Milton Crawford - Square Peg rrp £7.99. Forty years on and it doesn’t take a therapist to work out why the first item I suggest goes under the non-drop is an entertaining guide on how to deal with the munchies when you’ve had a bevvy or three. The follow-up to the delightful Hungover Cookbook, whether you hanker after a Thai, Mexican or Indian, as the author notes, unlike driving, texting or neurosurgery, cooking is always improved by booze. If you need to give something a touch more refined, cue Arfur Mullard, BEER - THE ENTHUSIAST'S MANUAL, Haynes rrp £21.99 in the customary under-the-bonnet style should suffice. Or how about the subtlety entitled DRINK MORE WHISKEY by Daniel Yaffe, Chronicle rrp £11.99. The author's surname sounding like one of my replies when I've had too much single malt, this has all the info and recipes an occasional tippler like, ahem, me requires. Hic. THE MODERN ART COOKBOOK by Mary Ann Caws - Reaktion rrp £25. Oooh, I like the look of this one. Which is just as well really, given that it is all about proponents of visual art and their relationship with the nosebag. Buns were big business in the old days - both the hot cross and regular sugared variety drew crowds of thousands to the village of Chelsea in the late 18th Century, causing near riots. For the person for whom the history is as interesting as the eating of it, this is an excellent gift, with letters and stories and recipes for lots of other delicacies and staples such as lace pancakes, taffety tarts (I’ve got to try one of those!) and gingerbread. There’s plenty here to keep this fruit fool drooling. THE VERY BEST BAKING BOOK FOR CHILDREN - Usborne rrp £17.99. People are always asking for recommendations for children’s culinary tomes and I can’t praise this publisher enough. “Rigorously tested” it claims here. I should say. All over my ruddy kitchen. I’m still chipping the Brownie mixture out of the light-fittings from the last session. So long as you don’t do anything daft and allow the little critters near anything creative like a pot of paint, THE BIG BOOK OF ART by Herve Tullet, Phaidon rrp £14.95 is a brilliant ring-bound, split paged primer from the king of tasteful preschool board books. You’ve only got yourself to blame if you actually let them try any of this stuff out. And for older kids, ARCHITECTURE ACCORDING TO PIGEONS by Speck Lee Tailfeather (geddit?), Phaidon rrp £12.95 rather beautifully tells us the stories behind some of the world’s most iconic buildings from Frank Gehry’s silver squiggle concert hall to the Coliseum, which your children will be thrilled to learn is also knows as The Murder Ring. If you are looking for a present for the teenager-stroke-Nick Hornby nerd in your life, the cheerfully entitled 1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE by Robert Dimery, Octopus rrp £20 has just been published. I was chatting with the eldest’s DJ boyfie just this morning about music, as you do, and happened to mention that we were going to Jerry Dammers’ fund-raiser. “Oh cool,” he replied politely and then added, “Can’t stand the Specials - Ska is just about the only genre of music I can’t get on with,” before opening my fridge door to see what he could find. Clearly I shall be tearing out that particular page before I give it to him.

STORIES FOR CHILDREN by Oscar Wilde, illustrated by Charles Robinson - O’Brien rrp £12.99. The illustrator was as famous as the author back in the day doing drawings for Robert Louis Stevenson as well as Frances Hodgson Burnett. This is strangely simple yet sumptuous: “On what little things does happiness depend!” said our Oscar, and he was as on the money as ever. JACK & THE BAKED BEANSTALK by Colin Simpson - Templar rrp £6.99. This is lovely too with rich city-scapes and a bumbling benevolent ogre who discovers that the key to happiness isn’t sitting upstairs on a lonely cloud counting the cash (though I for one would give it a go). Heck, I even love the end-papers - oceans of baked beans. TOO NOISY! by Malachy Doyle & Ed Vere - Walker rrp £6.99. This is a jolly racket of a bed time story with some rather glorious pictures that follows Dreamy Sam as he trudges home in the dark scared out of his wits. I do like one that keeps ’em nailed to the duvet with terror. THE LITTLE WOMAN WANTED NOISE by Val Teal & Robert Lawson, New York Review, rrp £6.99, continues the theme charmingly with parping from the old farm jalopy, dogs barking, rocking chairs creaking and kids playing. ZUBERT by Charlie Sutcliffe - Tate rrp £11.99. Zany and extravagant, its style is American but it is set in Bloomsbury. Professing not to be even “slightly magic” like his friends the spinglefranks (do keep up), our eponymous hero has the unenviable task of hiding a herd of bison, some errant monkeys and a bunch of elephants from beady-eyed hotel inspectors, naturally. HELLO MR HULOT by David Mervielle - North South Books rrp £11.99. My picture book of the year is a comic strip depiction of the famous Jacques Tati creation. With stunning artwork and genuinely funny little tales squashed into two sides, the punch-line having a page to itself each time, this Brussels trained artist (and as any graphic novel aficionado big or small will attest those grubby, graffiti strewn cobble-stoned streets are the true home of the genre) has really captured both the philosophical and physical humour of a fine eccentric, with nary a ‘mot’ exchanged. Finally, some suggestions for stockings: THE TALE OF RUSSELL THE SCARED CROW, rrp £5.99, self-produced by Matt Carr after getting fed-up with publishers being nervous they might get sued by a famous curmudgeonly film star - they should be so lucky! - where our feathered friend develops a fear of flying and takes a cheap flight in a sombrero instead; SIZZLES IS A STAR, Puffin, £4.99 and also a clever finger-puppet book from the Charlie & Lola sausage factory; for an alternative to the standard counting primer, NUMERO by Marion Bataille, Chronicle rrp £8.99 is an ingenious pop-up. For anybody between the ages of seven and fifty-seven, if you haven’t exterminated the telly yet, I suggest the DOCTOR WHO ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO FIFTY YEARS, Penguin rrp £12.99. And THE MISSING INK by Philip Hensher, Macmillan, rrp £8.99 may just have changed my mind about the dreaded seasonal greetings and even if I have been scarred for life by actually being a Christmas card on many occasions, I am now convinced that handwriting must not be sacrificed to the digital altar. Finally, yes you read this correctly, WE’RE GOING ON A BAR HUNT by Josie Lloyd & Emlyn Rees, Constable Robinson rrp £8.99, is a silly parody strictly for grown-ups so whatever you do kids, don’t try this at home. Right, seeing as this is clearly going to be a sober, sensible Christmas, I’d better put the pinny on and crack open the sherry. Afterall, can’t go under it, can’t go over it, got to go through it - swishy swashy, swishy swashy...

Education news Christmas revision courses Tutor House is offering a selection of revision workshops during the Christmas school holidays to give GCSE and international GCSE students an intensive exam boost and help with their revision techniques in all subjects for next summer’s public exams. The workshops will consist of five days of intense one-to-one and group revision sessions with students being able to either revise the whole subject, or pick and choose to focus on their weaker units and subject modules; not only aiding students in revising for their exams but also providing additional support for those with special education needs if necessary. The course runs from 16-22 December in Fulham, 10am-4pm each day with a break for lunch. Students can pick and mix their level of involvement by attending as many days during the week as they wish. Dieci Voices singing workshop Award winning choir, Dieci Voices, was invited to Bromley High School to deliver a one day workshop before showing off what the girls had learned in an evening performance. Winners of BBC Radio 3’s Choir of the Year competition, Dieci Voices inspired the pupils to be confident in their own singing ability. Year 7 pupil, Heather Moore said: “I felt really privileged to work with professionals and I had no idea that we could learn such complex round songs so fast. Long lasting language difficulties
Hundreds of thousands of children in challenging schools will receive extra help from specially trained teachers after Schools Minister David Laws announced £10 million to help develop school leaders of the future. The Department for Education money will more than double the number of so-called ‘teaching leaders’ working in schools from 766 currently to 1,706 by 2015. Teaching Leaders is an independent education charity which addresses educational disadvantage by developing school leaders. The new government funding will extend the charity’s rigorous two-year training programme for teachers already working in schools defined as challenging, who have the potential to become outstanding leaders, such as heads of departments. Teachers from the 2011 group who completed the programme have gone on to successful careers in education. Of those staying in education in the UK: • 97% are still working in challenging schools • 97 56% have been promoted within challenging schools • 97 25% have been promoted to the senior leadership team.
People who suffer from language difficulties as children may continue to suffer from various emotional and behavioural problems as adults, according to new research. Childhood language impairment used to be seen as an early years difficulty, with children catching up gradually as they got older. However, new research shows that is not always the case and that many people experience communication difficulties into adulthood. “Young people who suffer from language impairments are not easy to notice”, says Professor Gina Conti-Ramsden, Professor of Child Language and Learning at Manchester University. “They look like normal, typical people, and in fact they are. They have many skills and are in fact bright, it’s just that the one thing they are not good at is language. Language is difficult for them, just like playing the piano is difficult for some people.” According to Professor Conti-Ramsden, more work is needed to make sure that young people with SLI (specific language impairment) get the help that they need: “Although speech and language therapy plays an important role in the provision for children with SLI, this generally tends to diminish the older the children become,” she says. “Language difficulties often translate into problems fitting into modern life, such as maintaining relationships and getting jobs.”

What does it do? What’s it like? In a word - wonderful! The temperature is like sinking into a perfect bath; I could feel my body giving a big ‘aaah’ as the treatment began. Having gone in with the shivers and knotted shoulders, I came out with a smile on my face and a cosy glow.

The Incredible Edible Rachael Haynes is a mother of three children who lives in Deptford. In 2012 she set up The Incredible Edible to offer high quality catering for children’s events
FSE: Have you always been in the food business or did you have a different job before? After leaving university all those years ago I went to work for a women’s bookshop on Charing Cross Road. I decided to go back to college to do some post-graduate studies and started working in a vegetarian café in New Cross - and loved it! I’d always had to take a turn cooking meals at home with my mum and I loved baking for fun. I also worked in a world food café in Covent Garden up until I had my first child. I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back to working in café’s realistically as the hours just didn’t suit and I didn’t really want to leave my daughter. When she was about a year old, I began volunteering for a housing charity. I fundraised for my own post within the organisation and carried on working with people experiencing housing difficulties for about eight or nine years; and again stopped this when I couldn’t bear another school holiday being absent from my now two children. Somehow I gravitated to working in schools which was much more palatable. FSE: Why did you decide to set up The Incredible Edible? I wanted to be available for my children, and the best way for me is to be anchored in the home. I wanted to contribute by setting up a business that provides a lovely service for children and their parents where there is perhaps less time for them to really focus on the details as I can. I’ve been working with children (other than my own!) for the past seven or eight years. I was an early years leader at my children’s school. It is a Steiner school so, among other things, there is a strong thread of bringing beauty and sincerity into a child’s life - that these things are essential to children and that they feel them intrinsically I wanted to bring some of that feeling into The Incredible Edible. I have worked in mainstream schools with families and children who are experiencing difficulties emotionally and practically; I begun training as a children’s counsellor and play therapist and at this time in my life, with three children of varying ages, I love doing things that hold children at the centre. FSE: How is your business different from other local catering companies? My business is different in its ethos which I hope is reflected in the food and services provided. The Incredible Edible at its heart believes that all children deserve special things for special occasions and that well made, thoughtful food is not an exception. FSE: How easy (or difficult) was it to get started? I’ve worked at a pace that suits my family. With a 15, 9 and 2 year-old, their needs have dictated the

pace. The idea for me is that my business is sustainable and has longevity so I have to work at a pace that means I can carry all my responsibilities. I put time and attention into hand-making most food at The Incredible Edible so it can be quite pressured. But I think when you enjoy what you’re doing it doesn’t feel difficult! I think I have to be really aware of my limitations as well. I give my customers honesty by having conversations and being really clear about what is possible and what isn’t. company one day. She is deeply discerning and wants to go to catering college at the moment. Mia my fifteen year-old, knows where the kitchen is because I’ve seen her in there... she’s an enthusiastic tester and a very important one as she has a dairy and gluten allergy, so when I say we provide dairy and gluten free alternatives these are done with thought and attention, otherwise I think Mia would be quite disappointed. Noah is two and tends to eat and wear what you put in front of him - up until a few weeks ago he thought pen-lids and plant leaves were a part of taste testing...
FSE: Do you run the company on your own or are other people involved? I run The Incredible Edible on my own - unless you include developing menus and testing them on friends and family’s children! FSE: How do you source ingredients for the menus? Our ingredients come from a range of sources. We buy meat through a café in Brockley that lets us tag on to their larger order of organic, high welfare meat. I find that supermarkets can be really helpful for getting fair trade goods and organic products for staple items. We have an allotment which we share with my mum, so fruit, vegetables and flowers at certain times of year are really well grown without any chemicals. We didn’t grow much soft fruit this year so the jam for our scones came from a lovely pick-your-own-farm near Pepper Hill in Kent. Meanwhile, the elderflowers for our cordial and the crab apples for our crab toffee apples all came from the same local park.
FSE: When you have time off for yourself, what do you like to do? When I have time off I still love to cook! I love to practise my sugar paste flowers - I’m City & Guilds trained - as the fine detail work can be really therapeutic. After I had Noah I herniated two discs in my back and yoga has helped me recover, so I love to devote some time to practising yoga. Sometimes when my partner takes them all out, I just love to sit and read. FSE: Do you have a favourite shop/ café or park in southeast London? I really like the laid back atmosphere at Pistachios Café on Hilly Fields. Noah and I go to an outdoor play group on Tuesdays and often hangout there afterwards. It’s really warm and welcoming. I love Sheel Pharmacy in Lewisham, it has an amazing range of healthy food, skin-kind and environmentally friendly beauty and cleaning products.
FSE: What is a typical menu, and which are most popular? Lots of parents choose our Vintage Tea for their children because it’s a great menu with finger sandwiches, cheese scones, cup cakes with seasonal fruit and maple/ agave syrup marinated fruit in hand-made wafer cones. Children love our beautiful jellies which we flavour with rose, lavender and other lovely things. They are also intrigued by our chocolate soup, so parents often ask if they can add things from one menu onto another menu. I’m totally flexible so am happy for people to mix and match. FSE: Are your own children keen cooks or are they more interested in taste testing for you? Tigerlily, my nine year-old is a fierce cook and is always coming up with menu ideas; if I let her, I think she might completely take over! We’ve agreed now that she should write her ideas down for her own

Christmas parties and family get-togethers at this time of the year can spell a worrying time if your child is shy Take Holly’s experience with her six year-old son Thomas, “Thomas is a lovely little boy but when he met anyone he hadn’t met before he was unable to speak, he lost all his manners and just looked at the floor.” This is not unusual. Shyness is a perfectly normal trait in childhood, but when lives become restricted by shyness, we must take action as there is no question that shyness robs us of opportunities that other people take for granted. The good news is that there are a lot of practical things that can gently encourage a shy child to be more outgoing.
A karaoke machine or sing along DVD will encourage your child to be more adventurous with their speech and movement. Record them pretending to be a news reader, or presenter interviewing their ‘celebrity’ friend.

Shyness doesn’t necessarily mean low self-esteem; it usually comes from fear or feeling worried about what other people think. Spot which situations trigger shyness in your child then role play them later at home, giving hints on how they can feel more courageous when next out in public. “Thomas always felt nervous going to birthday parties, so we set up a party scene at home using his favourite toys and acted out the different scenarios: giving the party boy their present; saying hello to other children; asking the adult where the toilet is; saying thank you on leaving. Lights, camera, action Trying new activities in a gradual way helps overcome shyness. Holly always encouraged Thomas to try out new things. “I knew Thomas had achieved an improved level of confidence when in the end-of-term football lesson, he waited 30 minutes for his turn to kick a ball through the cones and straight into the goal - in front of everyone. He has really come out of his shell.” Taking trays of nibbles round guests, being photographer at a family occasion, going into a shop and asking for the price are all great ways to take their mind off their shyness. But don’t force them into doing things that make them uncomfortable - play to their strengths. Your child’s shyness will vanish if he is encouraged to get better at things he already excels at. Above all, being calm will sooth many a shy child. Relax Kids (www.relaxkids.com) sell a range of CDs that provide ‘chill skills’ that relax children and as a result boosts their confidence.
Our attitude is crucial We all want our children to outgrow their shyness and the latest research indicates that how parents respond to shyness is what makes the difference. Labelling our child as ‘shy’ would certainly be discouraged; they often turn into self fulfilling prophecies. In the same sense, we should always avoid dismissing any feelings of shyness eg “don’t be silly, big boys don’t get shy”. Comments like this lead children to feel that their worries are not valid, leading to anxiety. Be supportive by combining empathy with confident assertions, “Ahh, I can see you’re feeling a bit worried, but I’m really confident you’ll be able to handle it”. A child’s ability to comfortably relate to a wide variety of people is one of the most important ingredients to happiness and success. The thing to remember is that the majority of children will find their way through all of this with a bit of guidance, and will soon be waving their hands in the air to answer questions, belting out songs during group sings, and being the first in the queue for trying new things.
