Off the Page book festival 4th-15th May Stirling libraries ‘Off the Page’ book festival will be returning in May from 4th to 15th. There will be a variety of events with authors aimed at both children and adults coming to a library near you. This year there will be events with Steve Cole, Coo Clayton, Alan Dupre, Alan Windram, Paul Murdoch, and Elly Griffiths as well as a Jungle themed party at Bannockburn Library. HippFest 2018 This year’s Hippodrome Silent Film Festival runs from 21-25 March at the Hippodrome Cinema in Bo’ness. Book early for Saturday morning’s Jeely Jar double bill - which offers 2-for-1 entry if you bring a clean jam jar and lid. This year’s Jeely Jar films are the hilarious ‘Saving Sister Susie’ and ‘The Kid Reporter’ starring lovable child superstar Baby Peggy. Oliver at the Macrobert Stirling and Bridge of Allan Operatic Society (SABOS) are delighted to return to the Macrobert Arts Centre with their production of Oliver from Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 March. All Stars Cricket was launched in March 2017. The programme has had an incredible first year with over 1,500 All Stars Cricket centres delivering the programme to over 37,000 kids. All Stars Cricket provides boys and girls from 5 to 8 years old with an opportunity to become a star. The national curriculum of fun, cricket activities and games provides children with the basic movement skills to begin a lifelong love of physical activity. The programme is delivered by trained volunteers who deliver game based activities that teach basic cricket skills like catching, throwing, hitting a moving ball and social skills like team work and communication. Held at accredited cricket clubs these courses are a perfect way for children to learn about cricket and make friends in a safe, and most importantly, fun environment. Family fun at The National Wallace Monument There’s lots for everyone to see and do at Stirling’s famous landmark - starting with the beautiful new collection of woodcarvings on the Wallace Way as you climb the Abbey Craig, learning more about Stirling’s fascinating history as you go. This is a place where history is something you can touch and feel, as you follow the story of William Wallace in the exhibition galleries at The National Wallace Monument. Everyone enjoys the breath-taking views in all directions on reaching the Crown at the top of the 220ft high tower, before making their way back down the famous spiral staircase. Puppet Animation Festival 2018 Puppet Animation Festival is the UK’s largest and longest established annual performing arts event for children, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2018. Puppet Animation Festival co-ordinates a diverse programme of puppet theatre, puppetry making workshops and animated
films for children between the ages of 0-12. The Festival brings quality theatre and animated films to audiences across Scotland. The Festival isn’t just for kids though. We want parents and guardians to get involved and have fun too, allowing the whole family to connect with one another and their local community through creativity. Spring into Easter fun with the National Trust for Scotland The National Trust for Scotland is getting ready to celebrate Easter and the arrival of spring with its annual Cadbury Easter Egg Hunts. Dozens of events take place at the conservation charity’s properties from Culzean Castle in Ayrshire to Inverewe Garden in Wester Ross from 30 March to 2 April. Two unusual locations are joining in the fun for 2018 – Barry Mill, an operational water mill in Carnoustie and the Tenement House, a traditional Glaswegian tenement flat. Local hunts on at The Battle of Bannockburn site and
Alloa Tower. There are also exciting new experiences for visitors this Easter, as the Trust unveils two major new developments: The Easter bunny will find a new friend at Brodie Castle this spring, with the opening of the Playful Garden. This unique, familyfriendly garden experience will be full of surprises, colourful stories and giant sized fun, including Brodie bunny – at more than 6.5 metres, he’s about the biggest rabbit sculpture in Scotland. Family fun at Newhailes, East Lothian has got a big boost too, as they get ready to open ‘Weehailes’ a magical play area inspired by the special place of books and learning in the history of one of Scotland’s most impressive historical attractions. O
ne of the greatest joys you can have as a parent is to see your kids run free outside - watching the delight on their faces and listening to their laughter as they hide in long grass, get muddy or roll down a hill. With increasing pressure from work and school, families are struggling to find free time to be in nature. It seems there is an epidemic of families and children who aren’t getting to go outside enough.
According to a report commissioned by Persil for their ‘Dirt is Good’ campaign, British children are spending less time outside than adult prisoners! 74% of kids are spending less than an hour outdoors every day. A third only spend half an hour, and one in five don’t go out at all. Also, a recent government funded survey showed that one in nine kids haven’t been in a natural environment, like a park, forest or

beach for at least 12 months. Being outside is good for children’s general wellbeing and mental cognition. Kids are shown to be happier, healthier, more confident and less anxious when they spend time in nature. Equally, adults benefit from being outside with their children too. Serotonin levels are higher in your body after you have spent time in daylight and being in fresh air also helps you sleep better. With increasing pressure at school, parents who work, after-school clubs, screen time and homework to do, children generally have a lot less free time. Unstructured time outside and in nature is something that has become a luxury rather than a necessity. Other than the more obvious benefits like better physical and mental wellbeing, which are increasingly well evidenced it is now proven that Wild Time can support learning too through better concentration, imagination, resilience and capacity to rapidly process risk - all vital tools that children will need to thrive in the 21st century.” If you want more time in nature with your family try and make time at the weekends to take them to a beach, wood, forest or river. If you’re on a budget, or short on time, find your local park and enjoy the green, open space. Do some running races, climb a tree and make a camp. The best thing about spending time in nature is that it is as free as the air you breathe. Pack some sandwiches and the world is your oyster.
Here are some simple tips to encourage Wild Time: 1. Create a Den in the garden. Get the kids to help build it. They could even camp in it overnight! 2. Invest in some wellies and waterproofs so that you can go outside, rain or shine. 3. Grow some fruit and vegetables. You can do this by using pots on the windowsill or by using a small patch in the garden. 4. Start an animal watch list that children can tick off. 5. Create some landscape art. Use twigs, leaves, shells or stones, and photograph what you have made. 6. Make walks fun – do some of the walk blindfolded! Or make a treasure map of things your children have to find. 7. Try geocaching .This does involve using an app but might encourage a reluctant nature explorer who won’t be parted from a device. 8. Let older children have some freedom. Get them to walk, explore and go out on their bikes without adults. 9. Research some outdoor activities or exercise classes that you can do as a family, like an outdoor boot camp or mountain bike riding. 10. Sign up to the National Trust’s ‘50 Things To Do Before You’re 11 ¾.’

F
inding good quality childcare can be a difficult task for parents. Here is a step by step guide to the things to look out for and questions to ask when selecting the childcare provider that is right for your child.
Make a List Draw up a shortlist of providers using information from your local Family Information Service which should be available from your local authority. Remember to check: • The hours of childcare that can be provided • The hourly, daily, and/or weekly cost • If they have places available for your child • For 3 and 4 year olds check if the nursery is in partnership with their LA and are offering the 16 hours a week of government funded childcare. Visit Providers on your Shortlist It’s a good idea to visit several settings and to ask questions in person. It might help to take a friend or your partner to give you a second opinion.
Things to look for: • Trained and experienced staff, ready to learn and respond to your child’s individual needs • Busy but relaxed children who seem happy and purposeful • Safe, clean, welcoming premises • Outside play space • Cultural sensitivity and responsiveness to children’s home life • A staff team and group of children who reflect local ethnic and cultural groups • Fun activities planned each day – childcare providers all need to plan their days with children’s interests and enthusiasms in mind • Planned exercise and quiet times to relax are important • A big welcome for you and your child What to ask: • What is the ratio of staff to children? Take up References Other parents’ experiences of a childcare provider can be very useful. It is advisable to take up at least two references. Childcare providers should be happy to give you names of other parents to speak to about the service they provide. Book a Place Book your child’s place and arrange details like hours, start date, and who is allowed to pick up your child.You may need to pay a retainer fee to keep the place open until your child starts. Settling In Your child may take some time to settle into any new childcare setting, so allow them time to adjust to their new surroundings, especially if this is their first time in childcare. Most settings will offer a ‘settling in period,’ during which you have an agreed length of time to assess whether the setting is the right one for your child and that they are happy there. Funding Support All three and four year olds in Scotland are entitled to 600 hours of ‘free’ childcare, the equivalent of 16 hours a week for 38 weeks of the year. If your child is 2 and you meet certain requirements you may you also be eligible. i, my name is Tony Phillips and I run Coach My Sport, a Community Interest Company delivering progressive coaching sessions in Dunblane for children aged 3 – 8+ using the world renowned MultiSkillZ programme. I live in Callander with my wife Kirsten and our kids, Archie (7) and Isla (5). I’m originally from South Africa and am passionate about sport and giving kids the best opportunity to not only develop their motor skills but develop a lifelong love of sport. Why you like living where you do We currently live in Callander and love the fact that within five minutes of leaving the flat we can be enjoying the peace, quiet and stunning views of the hills and lochs, which are right on our doorstep. Favourite shop We like Mhor Bread in Callander, their rolls are light and great for a weekend treat of bacon butties! They also do a great selection of cakes, pastries and pies. Favourite park We are very lucky to live beside the Meadows in Callander so it’s easy for us to get the kids out, whether walking, on their bikes or on their scooters. In the summer we paddle in the river and there’s also a playpark and mini-golf. Favourite children’s club/class Apart from Coach My Sport sessions, Archie enjoys Judo with his Club Sportif, Isla does gymnastics at Dunblane Centre and both have swimming lessons in Larbert on a Sunday with SwimEasy. Favourite day out Briarlands Farm remains a firm favourite. The kids love the bouncy pillow, go-carts and more recently the archery and popup climbing walls they have at various times, while we enjoy the coffee and fresh cakes! We also love picking our own strawberries there in the summer. We enjoy being out in the fresh air and the hills around Callander and the David Marshall Lodge at Aberfoyle offer really

good trails which suit the kids. Doune Castle is also worth a visit, the audio guide is really enjoyable. Favourite child friendly restaurant We really like The Riverside in Callander at the moment. It’s right next door to where we live, the kids like the menu and the staff are very accommodating, especially when Archie wants more than one main course! Proudest eco-friendly moment We’ve been lucky enough to use a patch of garden to grow our own herbs and some fruit and vegetables. Everything tastes better when it’s home grown and the kids are always thrilled if they can pick and eat their own strawberries. Best planet saving tip Plan meals for the week and make a list before you go shopping meaning you are less likely to have any food waste No parent should be without Energy, imagination and a lovely bottle of wine to share once the kids are in bed! Parenting pet hates Those phone calls offering replacement boiler systems or new windows. They are automated and always seem to come when we’ve just sat down for dinner or when the kids have just gone to sleep. Funniest comment your kids have ever made Last year Archie (7) announced in all seriousness that he was the ‘Elemental Master of Gravity.’ Fortunately someone reassured us this was a Lego thing and we had nothing to worry about. Favourite family holiday spot We’ve been fortunate enough to go to Majorca the last couple of years, which is perfect. Short flight time, guaranteed sun and kids never tire of the swimming pool or beach. If they are happy, we are happy.
Most loved children’s book Both Archie and Isla could recite ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson from a young age so that’s always been a bit of a favourite. The Moon Man by Isabel Harris is also a lovely story and really captures the imagination. Biggest waste of money Expensive kids clothes. Isla especially loves nothing more than getting up close and personal with mud and puddles so I tend to buy clothes from supermarkets, charity shops or use hand-me-downs from friends and families. Most successful recipe/food A family roast on a Sunday always goes down well. We make a point of sitting down as a family, chatting about the weekend we’ve just had and the week ahead.
