Summer in the Alps
The Alps may be an obvious destination for the ski season, but how about a summer visit? We have recently opened in the unit previously occupied by Good Green Fun and our main aim is to support families experiencing hardship. Recently we have been affected by the Springkerse bridge closure. We have experienced a marked decrease in our donations and customer footfall and this could prove problematic to the success of our services if it continues in the longer term. FTH Theatre and The Hippodrome this Summer
Head along to FTH Theatre for some Summer fun with ‘The Giant’s Loo Roll’ – 27th July 2pm. Rugbytots Stirling and Clackmannanshire
Rugbytots has arrived in Stirling with classes in Cambusbarron, Bridge of Allan, Alloa, Callander and Dunblane! This highly energetic play programme for boys and girls aged 2-7 years has run in Scotland since 2008, with classes in Stirling since summer 2012. In April 2016 more classes were added, run by owner and former Scotland Rugby Internationalist, James Craig. Come along and join in the fun! Classes currently run in Cambusbarron, Dunblane, Alloa, Calendar and Bridge of Allan. Healthy Ice Lollies to Make with your Kids Let the kids cool down in style with healthy homemade ice lollies. There is no limit to the range, as you can use any fruit you like – and even smuggle in some veggies! Whipping up a batch of homemade ice lollies makes for a quick and exciting summer project for kids and these are a breeze to make. All you need is a food processor or blender, ice lolly moulds and a bit time to allow them to set. Below is my favourite recipe for yoghurt and berry ice lollies, which is also one of the easiest!

Have fun! Yoghurt and Berry Coconut Ice Lollies
Ingredients Makes 4 (but this is depending on the size of your lolly moulds) • 400g of frozen (or fresh) berries. A mix is great - I use blueberries and strawberries • 1/2 tin of coconut milk • 400g natural yoghurt • 1 tbsp maple syrup (use a little less or more depending on how sweet your fruit is) • 1tsp vanilla Instructions 1. Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blitz until smooth. 2. Pour the mixture into your ice-lolly moulds and attach the freeze tops. 3. Freeze for a minimum of 4 hours until solid. 4. Warm the moulds under water to release the pops when you are ready to eat them. i I am Jenny Williams, I have a wee boy age 5 and I live in Causewayhead in Stirling. I did a BA Hons in Sport in the Community and I have been a Fitness and Yoga teacher for 11 years. Up until recently I worked as a dental implant sales specialist but gave the corporate world up to do what I love the most. I started Mums on the Run in Stirling 4 years ago when my son was 10 months old. I know how difficult it can be to juggle, work, child care and keeping fit so the classes enable you time to exercise no matter what fitness level you are and classes are catered to your personal needs. You can bring your babies along in buggies and also older children depending on which class you choose to take part in. The classes are relaxed and welcoming so you feel able to take part but also attend to your wee one without feeling you are disturbing the others in the class, as we are all in the same position! Classes are available in the Dunblane, Bridge of Allan and Stirling areas. Why you like living where you do? I love living in the Stirling area as the scenery is stunning and every day I think how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place.
Favourite shop Run4it in Bridge of Allan. There is a great selection of trainers, clothes and fitness accessories. Mandy and the team are a great bunch. Favourite park The Memorial Park in Bridge of Allan as it is a great place to cycle with my wee one and is very pretty. Favourite children’s club/class Rugby Tots is fabulous; it’s lots of fun and has great teachers. We also love the swimming lessons at Stirling University.

Favourite day out The Wallace Monument is a favourite, the carvings on the way up are great to see and we love counting the steps and then when at top looking out for our home! My wee one also loves a walk round the university and feeding the ducks (or scaring them!) The old railway track past Callander is perfect for cycling with little ones as is Loch Katrine in the Trossachs.

Mischief Makers – the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge
Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to maintain their reading skills and confidence. 2018 will be the 20th challenge. It’s open to primary school children of every ability. This year the challenge will focus on the theme of mischief and pranks, as inspired by the much-loved Beano comic, which celebrates its 80th anniversary next year. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect incentives, such as stickers, to earn their final challenge certificate and medal. Children can choose, recommend and review books at the Book Sorter on the Challenge website. This is the largest database of children’s peer-peer reading recommendations. When the kids are ready to let off steam – make tracks for Loch Katrine!
There’s always something memorable about family days out in the great outdoors and when it comes to finding spaces for adventure – they don’t come on a much grander scale than The Great Trossachs Forest! At its heart is one of the most popular destinations when it comes to finding a place to let children go exploring – Loch Katrine, the starting point for so many different experiences from walking by the loch shore, through to family cycling expeditions, and of course the opportunity to enjoy a sail on the legendary steamship Sir Walter Scott (or the modern cruiser Lady of the Lake). Family fun in Falkirk Town Centre this summer
Emergency Services Day on Wednesday 15th August is a must with fun for all the family. With displays, demonstrations and free giveaways, from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service and other partner agencies. There will be First Aid displays, Mounted Police, Police Vehicles and much more. Then on Saturday 18th August come along and support one of 40 charities who will be taking part in this year’s Charities day. Organised in partnership with Falkirk Delivers and The Rotary Club of Falkirk, this event is to help local charities with their fundraising efforts. Brick Built LEGO Exhibition and Modelling coming to Clacks
To mark the Year of Young People 2018, Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSI), who lead on volunteering in Clackmannanshire, is hosting a three week LEGO exhibition with Big Build experiences provided by celebrated Edinburgh-based LEGO constructor, Warren Elmsmore. This event aimed at all ages will be held in the dearly-loved historic Liberal Club in Mar Street, Alloa from 17th July for three weeks. The event is free, with entry by donation and will feature full-scale LEGO exhibits and on four days, Big Builds which will encourage people of all ages to take part in building giant models and mosaic. Young people are also encouraged to take part in volunteering at the event – at the information desk, in the pop-up café and also taking part in the LEGO exhibition itself. The proceeds from the exhibition will go to the Local Community Fund which has already benefited a wide number of local groups over the last year. Explore The National Wallace Monument - a place where history is something you can touch and feel!

A WILD day out at Blair Drummond Safari Park

Go on a bike ride
Bikes are a great, free and fun way to spend a few hours. Explore some of our local cycle tracks or drive to a park, the children will love the independence and freedom that comes with riding a bike. It’s a great way to travel long distances in a short space of time, and they’ll feel like they’ve really achieved something. Take a picnic to make the adventure more fun. Loch Katrine have bike hire and beautiful cycle paths if you want to hire bikes or take your own.
Climb a hill
This can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are. (We are spoilt for choice in beautiful Central Scotland). Enjoy helping one another to make the climb: your reward is the view from the top, and the picnic lunch you have up there!

Preparing Your Child for School
I
f your child is starting school in August, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure!
Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in the early years and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips.
Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources. Communication and Language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence. Model good spoken
language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings throughout the day and develop a positive ethos around the importance of communicating and expressing feelings, of any kind. This will have multiple benefits (including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future. Sharing and Interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! However,

expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, modelling language and behaviour which gives them strategies and words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future. Respect for Behavioural Boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: • Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention • Keeping hands/feet to themselves • Sharing and taking turns • Looking after things • Tidying away • Being kind to others You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others. Physical (Gross and Fine Motor Skills) All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors,
bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting.

Exploring and Investigating Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about how to do something. Make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative, imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/toys). See what he or she does with it. In the latter stages of his or her ‘creation’ you may wish to step in to play too, but allow your child to initiate the direction of the play and conversation. All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. Enjoy and treasure these precious last few months with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life. As you get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days. Getting your child settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up on time for school.

Exercise is your best friend Even if the weather’s dreadful, make sure your kids have exercise every day. It keeps them fit and helps with a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school. Plan your mornings Mornings are bad times! Everyone is tired and cranky so having a routine can help. Get up 15 minutes before the kids to get some ‘me time’. Ban games, X-Boxes and the TV in the morning as time can slip away. Be prepared Getting things prepared the night before can help immensely with the morning rush, so get lunchboxes made and breakfast things out the night before. Have rules Make sure that school bags, shoes and coats go in a specific place so that there is no frantic searching in the morning. Make sure they know their routine too Having a planner is a great help to avoid missing tutors and play dates. A big calendar on the fridge means everyone can see what’s happening and when. Why routines work Children respond really well to a routine so you’ll thank yourself when they adapt to doing the right things at the right time each day. Have breakfast and dinner at set times, bedtime must be absolutely set in stone and homework should have appointed times too. By Sally J.
