In this issue we have a great article on clubs and classes and their benefits. is inviting budding bakers this October, to roll up their sleeves and get cooking to raise vital dough. The Bake it Better appeal asks supporters to gather family, friends and colleagues to organise cake sales from 13-19 October to help make a difference for very ill children and their families from across the UK. Bake it Better aims to raise more than £125,000 from bake sales to help fund the hospital’s much needed redevelopment, replacing cramped, outdated wards with modern, state-of-the-art facilities where a parent or carer can staycomfortably by their child’s bedside. For inspiration the charity has created a fundraising pack choc-full of ideas including recipes from celebrities, patients and hospital staff, decorations for your bake sale, tips to boost donations and lots more to help you make the most of your event. Hayley Richardson from Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said: “Everyone can get involved in Bake it Better - cake sales are fun and easy to organise, especially with help from friends and family. Sponsored Child Scheme Helping Children Across Sussex Whether it’s playing the piano, brushing up on maths skills or becoming a karate whizz, the KalliKids Sponsor a Child Scheme is giving young people amazing opportunities. The project, which was launched back in January, offers 21 youngsters across Sussex, a chance to learn a new skill for free for a year. Feedback has already shown on top of these skills, many of the kids are seeing their confidence levels soar. Karen Bach, Founder of KalliKids, said: “The original idea was to offer families a chance to experience new activities, but much more is coming out of it. Some of the young people have experienced such tragedy and are finding ways out of their grief. Others, struggling with all the challenges adolescence brings, have found safe places in the activities.” One of these is 13-year-old Zoe Smith from Brighton. She is learning to play the piano with Jenni Boyce of Piece by Piece Music Tuition. Two years ago Zoe went through a very difficult family trauma. Mum, Sarah-Jane, said: “Zoe needed an outlet to show emotion. The lessons have allowed her creative side to flourish and provide an escape. I think the scheme is wonderful. I am on a low income and could never have afforded piano lessons. Thanks so much KalliKids.” Jenni added: “I think activities such as piano and music allow the children to have another outlet to deal with anything going on at home or in their lives. Zoe is a budding songwriter and by being able to pour her feelings and emotions in to her songs she can let them out in a productive way rather than keeping them locked up. Equally, when she is playing songs on the piano she can forget about everything for a while and concentrate on something she loves!” KalliKids is an accreditation service for parents looking for recommended, trusted and approved family activities. Representing more than 313 providers, it has over 3000 parent members. Flossie Scott, 3, from Steyning is also one of the sponsored children. She is learning to swim with Wet Wet Wet. Flossie suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Acrodermatitis Enteropathica which without daily medication could be fatal. She also has a severe vitamin D deficiency.

Jasmine Slater, 13, Flossie from Worthing, is developing her martial arts skills with Blackbelt Leaders. “I think the best part of the whole scheme is the sense of achievement. I was a bit shy at first then I realised I was actually doing well,” she said. “It’s definitely worthwhile. I am so much fitter. I would definitely recommend it to others as it has taken me out of my comfort zone.”

Research shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well. However it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to know how to broach the subject with school.
As both a parent and a primary school teacher, I know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. If you’re meeting a teacher outside of parents’ evening or class surgeries, it’s because there is a problem. These meetings can easily become tense, with both ‘sides’ on the defensive.
Here are a few tips for successful communication:
Assume the best of your child’s teacher, they are trained professionals who understand the curriculum and child development. They ultimately want the same as you – a happy child who is learning. Let teachers know if there are problems at home. You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour.
Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth! After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about home. Mediation, if you have issues with a teacher’s conduct and feel upset or angry, it’s best that an additional member of staff is present.
Can we be parents and still be organised or has the arrival of children managed to turn us all into forgetful shadows of our former selves....?
Talk to the teacher first even negative feedback is appreciated. Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves!
Have you ever been found guilty of trying to take your child into school on a Saturday morning and wondering why the school was shut up?
Remember that teachers are human, they sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.
Some things you could do to understand how your school works: Helping out in school: Get an insight into how things are run and improve your relationship with the school by volunteering.
Parent Helper: Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school. Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check (Disclosures in Scotland) - you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off. School Trips: If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver! Use your Expertise: Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. One volcanologist parent at my son’s school did a legendary presentation including exploding volcanoes. Join the PTA: Fostering closer home-school links, the PTA usually organise the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by a committee, they may include ‘class reps’ who pass on information from other parents in the class. Parent Council member: Some schools have a Parent Council, where parents meet to share ideas that are fed back to the school governors. This is great if you’re too busy to commit to PTA or Governors, but want to have an input. Whether or not you think you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the positives for after school clubs.
From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child; and the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill.
Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy kids who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance is great for kids to learn discipline and self-expression. The list is endless.

Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Woodcraft Folk, Brownies and Scouts.
There’s so many to choose from, it is tempting to try them all but it is also important not to overburden kids with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor. After that, the trick is to stay involved.
DRAMA
As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom.” She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” But kids clubs are not only great for improving academic levels but for developing important life skills too. “It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.”
There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts and crafts, swimming, tennis and kung fu. There are clubs for nature lovers run by the Woodland Trust, BMX biking for tots, and even kid’s yoga and tai chi.
COMMUNICATION
For a start, after school clubs give kids the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, kids don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding.

That is why when students are welcomed into the school they are also evaluated to see if there is a drive to be positive and give things the best effort possible. People and their positive attitudes can be like an elixir for your soul. Hang around them, learn from them, and share their positive energy. Avoid negative people, for they will not have anything to offer you. They act like water to a fire, putting out the flames of hope and happiness. The benefits of teaching your little one water safety and swimming skills from an early age are many, but for many the most important one is teaching water safety and potentially life-saving skills. These include learning a respect for the water and an awareness of its dangers and practicing getting to the side of the pool and climbing out. With drowning still the biggest cause of accidental death in children in this country, this I think is the most important thing you can teach your child and living by the sea makes it even more important – may indeed save their life one day, or they may be able to save the life of another.
Physical fitness is another key benefit With so many of our children now classed as obese, and with under 2’s using i-pads and gadgets on a daily basis, we need to make sure that we do all we can to encourage our children to be physically fit. Studies have shown that if good habits and attitudes to physical exercise are started in early life then they are much more likely to be carried on into teenage and adult life. Swimming is also a great exercise for children with some disabilities that make it impossible to exercise on land.
Confidence and Independence are key
benefits often cited by our customers. Although children should never be left unattended in or near water, the confidence they gain from being able to be independent from a young age is invaluable in the pool and also carries over to life on land!
Swimming is good for brain development:
Last year research from the Queensland University School of Nursing showed that the movements of swimming produce heightened cognitive behaviour and ease of learning and this year researchers at Melbourne University found that brain blood flow is higher when excercising while immersed in water. Other research has shown that although most of our brain cells are formed before birth, the majority of the connections between these cells are made in infancy and the toddler years – need I say more!
Bonding with your child is something I really
enjoyed about swimming with my children – especially as babies and toddlers. Being in the pool gives you real quality time with your little one away from phones and all the distractions of everyday life. I was actually quite sad when mine started after school swimming – I did however resist the urge to get in but still enjoy swimming with them for pleasure!
Making Friends: swimming lessons are also a very social activity and even if you don’t attend structured lessons, people often meet in the pool this way children tend to have fun with their peers and as one of our Customer’s put it ‘coincidentally learn to swim’! Trick and Treating What Age Can Children Start?
There’s no minimum age! Many parents enjoy dressing up and venturing out with their toddlers, whilst others take babies along in prams with older siblings.
What Are the Rules?
Only approach homes that have a visible “invitation” – whether it’s a pumpkin, lantern or other Halloween decorations displayed. Don’t knock if the lights are off and don’t knock more than once. Alternatively, you may decide to knock only on doors of friends and neighbours that you have pre-warned of the visit!
What if my Children Don’t Like the Treat?
Make sure your children are briefed to say “please” and “thank you” in addition to “trick or treat,” plus they should try to be appreciative of any treat they are given.
What’s the Trick All About?
The word “trick” refers to the “threat” to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. These days it is uncommon to have raw egg splattered over your driveway by pranksters, but it’s safest not to answer the door o raucous groups of older teenagers, or if you suspect your visitors are not well-intentioned. If you are asked for a “trick,” what should you do? One harmless but funny idea is to get the homeowner to close their eyes and put their hand in a witch’s hat or toy cauldron filled with a gooey mess or plastic spiders, rubbery worms and insects.

During the school holidays we were lucky enough to spend the day at Paultons Park.
The weather was on our side, the traffic was on our side even the queues were on our side! With three children aged 8, 9 and 11 we were looking forward to a great day out and we were not disappointed. The park was clean and tidy and there was very little queuing for the larger rides, although we did get there early which I would highly recommend. Peppa Pig World was a huge hit with the younger visitors and here the queues were longer but not much more than a 30 minute wait for the busiest ride. We also went into the 4D cinema which was hilarious and really worth a visit – be prepared to be surprised! As the weather was so lovely we also got to use the Muddy Puddles splash area which really helped the kids cool down before heading home. All around the park there are toilet facilities which included toddler seats on every toilet. There are kiosks selling drinks and snacks or food outlets were you can sit inside, however with plenty of places to sit around the park you could also take your own picnic. Come rain or shine Paultons Park is an ideal family day out and very much worth a visit.
