Two Decades for Unique Pennines Centre 2013 marks 20 years since architect David Greenwood and his wife Glenys took a leap of faith and bought Westwood mission church with the vision of crafting a beautiful residential centre for short stays and a meeting place for the whole community. The team based at Lancaster, Liverpool and Lincoln universities will send out a communication checklist and questionnaire by post. The results will help researchers to build up a picture of early language development in the UK. Head Girl Takes to the Sky for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Hipperholme Grammar School’s Head Girl, Gabriella Capone, will be taking to the skies for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice during Children’s Hospice Week. She has volunteered to be part of a Tandem Sky Dive at Hibaldstow in North Lincolnshire. Gabby will be harnessed to the front of a fully BPA qualified parachuting instructor and jump from 15,000 ft, experiencing an adrenaline-fuelled free fall and reaching terminal velocity at 120mph. The Hospice’s Partnership Development Manager, Jason Costello says. “Listening to her talk enthusiastically about her Sky Dive, hearing how it will challenge her and knowing that her fundraising will go towards supporting local children and families at difficult times was fantastic! It’s hard to believe that Gabby is doing all this while studying for her A levels. Gabby’s attitude demonstrates you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. The support from the Hipperholme Grammar School community is tremendous, I can’t thank them enough.” Gabby is seeking sponsorship from family and friends to raise as much money as possible for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and is committed to raising a minimum of £400. Huddersfield Uniform Exchange FREE school uniform is now available for Huddersfield residents hit by the withdrawal of the school uniform grant. Motivated by a BBC1 documentary, a group of Huddersfield mums decided to help local families struggling to provide school uniforms for their children. In partnership with the Local Sure Start Children’s Centre, supported by Kirklees council, Huddersfield Uniform Exchange collects unwanted uniforms and gets them to the children who need them, free of charge. The majority of the items donated are second-hand and in good condition with some brand new donations. Items beyond repair are sold as rags, raising funds for the Uniform Exchange. The group are looking for more volunteers as well as donations (money and uniform). Marathon events for the Ark The founders of the Ark and Space in Mytholmroyd, Jo Brock and Heidi Bingham, will be following their husbands’ Pennines Way progress as they tackle 10 Marathons in 10 days starting from Edale, Derbyshire and finishing at Kirk Yetholm, Scotland. Keen runners, the pair were inspired to raise funds for The Candlelighters Charity which has been supporting Jacob Howarth & his family during this challenging time as Jacob fights Neuroblastoma. Jo and Heidi say, “As Jacob attends The Ark we are all trying to raise as much money as possible for this great cause. We will be uploading maps and updates to keep everyone posted. During the same period, we are involving the children from our nursery and out of school club to see how many marathons can be run or walked by them. Sponsor forms have been sent out to all our parents and a Just Giving page has been set up, which raised more than £1000 in 4 days. Early starters There are many options for pre-school childcare including childminders, nannies, voluntary groups, Private Day Nurseries and state nurseries in primary school settings. What about the Nursery and Early Years provision of local Independent schools? We take a closer look at three in our region.

Oldham Hulme Grammar Schools

Hipperholme Grammar School Nursery children love learning in Forest School which develops a sense of awareness and enjoyment of the natural world whilst learning an understanding of how to be safe. Also children have access to ‘freeflow’ play directly from the classroom to safe, secure and stimulating outside areas, where they can explore and develop. The younger children acquire social skills by integrating with their older peers in school events and activities. A new gallery at Eureka! aims to inspire families to make healthier choices. Families Pennines and Families Leeds went to the opening of All About Me. It’s only a matter of time before robots take over. At Eureka! the National Children’s Museum, it’s already happened. Zoom the robot welcomes guests to the new £2.9 million health and body themed gallery that’s been 3 years in the planning. Judging by the reaction of the first visitors, it’s been worth the wait. Zoom invites us to explore 4 areas. The first helps measure your stride, reach and height. There’s also a mirror which shows how you’ll look in a few decades. For the little girl in front of me, that was fun. As a middle aged mum staring 40 squarely in the eyes, it was not. The Health Centre next, the centerpiece of the gallery. Explains Tom Warman, Director of Marketing and Development at Eureka! “It’s been designed by kids, for kids and encourages dads to get their teeth checked by their daughters, and mums to get scanned by their sons. It’s great fun.”

Liz Smallman, the museum’s Head of Learning, says, “We want this to be aspirational. We want to sow the seeds in the little minds that come through here, seeds that may inspire future Doctors, Dentists and Midwives.” The gallery is filled with children asking questions about each of the 100 exhibits, with children in the scanning machine, inside a giant mouth and hiding up a huge nose. The hands on experience means children really are absorbing information as they poke, prod and play. The final area looks at keeping fit and encourages children to look at the changes in their body when they Get Active. There’s a climbing wall and an interactive pond as well as the popular skeleton bike from Me and My Body. This gallery promotes discussion about healthy lifestyles, encourages a debate about how to make healthy choices and does it all with that vital element of fun. One piece of advice – avoid the ‘magic’ ageing mirror. Seeing into the future with Zoom was fun. Seeing my future face was not. I’ll leave that exhibit to the children! Gut feeling - Coeliac Disease. Rachel Bentley talks about her own experiences of Coeliac Disease.

In 2001, after the birth of my first child, I was finally diagnosed with Coeliac disease - after 30 years! Going gluten free with my official diagnosis meant my tummy troubles really improved. In the family? The stats suggest that 1 in 100 people in the UK have Coeliac Disease but in families this is much higher with 10 in 100 people being affected if someone closely related has the disease. Determined that my children would not have the same lifelong problem I found through blood tests that my youngest could be a sufferer and a biopsy found he too was Coeliac. He is now gluten free too. What is Coeliac Disease? It is an autoimmune disease, not an allergy, not a food intolerance – and definitely not faddy eating! Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues. In Coeliac Disease the cause for the attack is gluten - the protein found in wheat, rye and barley but some people are also sensitive to oats. The only treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet. It cannot be caught but is more common in families.

What do I look for? Undiagnosed Coeliac Disease damages the lining of the small intestine. It can also affect other parts of the body. The symptoms vary in severity but typical symptoms include diarrhoea, bloating, indigestion and abdominal pain. It is therefore important to see your GP if you, or your child, have any of these symptoms or someone related to you has Coeliac Disease or Dermatitis Herpetiformis.

How is it diagnosed? If you suspect that you or your child has Coeliac Disease, there are two steps to diagnosis:

• any combination of iron, vitamin B12 or folic ac id deficiency

• Symptoms should be discussed with the GP and if Coeliac Disease is suspected they will carry out a blood test. Specific blood tests detect antibodies resulting from eating gluten. • Depending on the outcome of the test, a person is referred to a gastroenterologist who will carry out a small intestine endoscopy with biopsy to show the typical damage to the gut lining. It is essential that people continue to eat gluten throughout the diagnosis process, otherwise it is not possible to make an accurate diagnosis. Coeliac Awareness Week. Coeliac UK, the national charity for Coeliac Disease, launches a new campaign in May 2013 with the Charity’s Health Ambassador, Dr Chris Steele MBE, to find the missing half a million people undiagnosed with Coeliac Disease and specifically targeting those diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

It was time to find out for ourselves. Warm Welcome Visiting during the cold Easter holidays, snow still on the ground, we found a truly warm, family welcome from the staff of the hotel. Located about 15 minutes from Chester, on top of a wooded hill, this is an established, independently owned hotel with tonnes of personality.

Feeding time Good breakfasts included in the deal with food available in the lounge or pool bar during the day and dining room in the evening means every member of the family can be catered for – including those with special dietary needs. Close to Frodsham and Chester there are plenty of alternatives too. We really felt at home and because the kids were happy we were able to relax too. With the cold weather outdoors the kids were really happy to stay by the pool and it was quite a job to pull them away from the attractions in the hotel.

Everything is really well thought out to make the children the focus of the stay. A rubber duck for bathtime, DVD player in the room, PS2 and games available for free loan too. The heated 20m shallow swimming pool (with a splash pool for little ones) a few steps from the family rooms is the icing on the cake.

The hotel has built great relationships with the best local attractions including Chester Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium and Gullivers World, Warrington and can arrange special offer tickets. This trip we went to Hoylake beach and to Chester and really think City Sightseeing Chester is a great idea as parking wasn’t easy! In Frodsham, Castle Park provides lovely surroundings with plenty of room to run around, tennis courts and playgrounds suitable for all ages from tots to teens. Family business The hotel is headed up by Tamsin and Kieran McCabe. As parents they know the value of a quality, family friendly hotel with personality. They provide flexibile options in the family rooms they have created. Tamsin said, “Families today often include more than 2 children and also need a cot so we change the layout of the room to fit the family’s needs.
