Hello! Hooray for Dads! Yes, there’s one day a year that we officially tell them how wonderful they are, but we do also think it all year round. While it’s more the norm that Mums are the family maid, childminder and cook, some of us are lucky enough to have hands-on-with-the-kids, helpful-round-the-house husbands and dads, so we’re looking forward to spoiling them on 15 June. Our kids will say that Dad is someone they go to when Mum says “no” – we say that despite the snoring, the mess, the laundry-generating and remote-hogging, we really are their number one fans. So Happy Father’s day to all the Dads!

Share your stories This May sees the return of National Share-A-Story Month, an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing. Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, Share-A-Story Month is a fantastic opportunity to bring children and stories together, with a whole host of events running across the country. The theme for 2014 is ‘Imagination and Inventiveness’, celebrating with Dahl & Dahl and Puffin Publishers the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.Check out the
It’s time to get walking again! This year’s Walk To School Week runs from 19 – 23 May, bringing together nearly one million schoolchildren, teachers and parents. 2014’s campaign promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with plenty of fun ideas of how to get involved. With Strider’s 5-day Walking Challenge it’s easier than ever to take part, plus you also get a chance to win an iPad mini. Walk to School Week reinforces five benefits of walking: safety, discovery, health, eco-friendly and social time, so how about setting up a Park & Stride area around your school, or holding a Walk to School event and encouraging everyone to leave their cars at home for
a day? One of our favourite ideas is to team up with neighbouring schools and organise a walking relay between schools, with refreshment stops at each one! Or you could nominate your dream walking companion from the world of books and dress up as them on Walk to School Day. Walk that way
Local charitable trust, the Moore Foundation, returns to Altrincham Football Club on Sunday 11 May to host a family fun filled celebrity packed football match, raising vital funds for its beneficiaries. Gates open at midday and the match kicks-off at 1pm when the team of football
legends will don their boots and take on the celebrity challengers. Some of the confirmed players include former Manchester United stars Clayton Blackmore, Lee Martin (a patron of the charity), Danny Higginbotham, as well as former Manchester City keeper, Eric Nixon, and the celebrities include Hollyoaks star Keith Rice, who plays Finn O’Connor, former Apprentice candidate Neil Clough, as well as BBC Radio Manchester’s Mike Sweeney, to name but a few. Manchester United stadium announcer Alan Keegan will be compere the event – keeping the crowds entertained! Popstar Anthony Kavanagh will also be performing and there will be lots of activities for all the family including half time entertainment, competitions and activities as well as a raffle, and the charity mascot, Little M, will make an appearance too! A birthday party is a ritual of childhood and an event that’s remembered forever. So the pressure is on – how do you ensure success and survival (both your own and your home’s)? 0 – 3: There’s just one word that matters here: simplicity. Birthday parties for tinies can be marvellous, memorable affairs, but they don’t need to be elaborate or to involve much expense or entertainment or special props. In essence, you’re catering for the grown-ups as much as for the children – because at this stage, the adults will definitely stay (and you’re more than likely to have a few grandparents in the mix as well). Concentrate on creating a fun, easy, safe space for the children – a soft play space with plenty of toys strewn around is ideal – and make sure the adults are well catered for: if they stay calm, the children will as well. If you want something with a bit of a theme, how about a teddy bears’ picnic? Make sure everyone remembers to take their favourite cuddlies home at the end though, or there will be tears at bedtime! 4 – 6: At this stage parties can be a bit more ambitious and a time when it is well worth investing in a
great entertainer: they are experts, know how to crowd control while producing shrieks and honest laughs. However don’t assume that to put on a great bash you need to spend lots of money. At this age children can have loads of fun without a big outlay; later on, when they’re tweens and teens, you’ll be under pressure to shell out big-time, so don’t pre-empt that now. A party at home or in the local park can be huge fun; traditional party games will be popular, and if you want to push the boat out a bit consider investing in a bouncy castle; or if home really isn’t a possibility, a soft play centre will be hassle-free, if more expensive. Themed parties are great for this age group, and they actually make life simpler for the party organiser: a pirate theme is always popular, or sea creatures, or pick up on your child’s favourite book or TV programme. Dressing up is a big hit for this age group too. 7 – 9: Activities work a treat at this stage, whether you’re at home or in a church hall or at a park. For a popular and low-budget option, think about a baking party at home – weigh out all the ingredients before the children arrive, get them to mix and decorate them and then pop them in the oven to bake while you play a few party games (shortbread biscuits are easy peasy; have a range of cutters for exciting shapes). 10 – 12: Older children like going out to party. To keep the costs down, encourage a smaller number of guests – think about a trip to the seaside or to an exciting adventure playground they’ve not visited before, and remember that the journey can be as much fun as the activity at the end of it. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, a trip to a climbing wall, an ice rink, a bowling rink or a go-karting centre can be wonderful fun too.
The golden rules • Never have a party that lasts more than two hours • Party bags can be cheap as chips, thanks to charity and pound shops – although a balloon and small token work just as well. • Have a plan mapped out for what should happen when

Parties A great workout at the Gym By Caryl Hall
There’s just one word I can use for Ben’s 8th birthday party and that’s WOW! We chose Vernon Park Gymnastics Club in Stockport and it was absolutely perfect. With a big friendship group, it’s still difficult to try and get him to narrow down his invitations to just a handful of children, so his dad and I agreed to a big party one last time. £100 gives you exclusive use of the Gym for an hour, followed by half an hour in the Party area – for up to 25 children. This meant that we could not only ask all his good friends to come, but also invite some siblings along without breaking the bank completely. With a qualified gymnastics coach in attendance to keep an eye on safety and to demonstrate a few “moves” (we had the lovely Dan, who was great with the kids), pretty much all the equipment was
accessible. Within a few minutes, all the children (our age range was 3 – 8) were bouncing, balancing, flipping and dangling, no previous gymnastics experience required! An hour was plenty – we made sure we had lots of water on hand as it was thirsty work, and they managed to work up an impressive appetite for the food (you need to provide your own), which disappeared in no time. Party slots are available at specific times to work around the classes at the gym – ours was at 5.15pm, which meant that we had a lot of grateful parents, as a few children fell asleep in the car, and the rest were quite happy to go to bed as soon as they got home. Dancing up a storm By Jayne Keep
For Lily’s 8th birthday she wanted something a little more grown up than the traditional party games, so this year we went for a Rhythmix Street Dance Party hosted by Little Sports Coaching. The two girls who came along to lead the party were brilliant. To warm everyone up, they played some fab team games to get everyone working together and in the mood for letting go and having some fun. They then taught Lily and her friends a great routine to a One Direction song. The routine was built up in sections to ensure everyone in the party had got to grips with each part; the girls even worked in a couple of gymnastic moves as requested by Lily. The party finale saw the kids in groups, performing on the stage (good job I selected a venue with one of those!). The food then flew off the table as everyone had worked up such an appetite so some

Clubs & classes Book up early! Rugby or ballet, swimming or gymnastics, drama or Brownies – whatever activity your child loves, how soon should you book for the autumn term? While some of us are happy to wait until the very last minute to book our children’s classes, others prefer to book well in advance. It’s certainly worth starting to look for classes early on – even as much as a whole term in advance. Here’s why: • You won’t get stuck with a term of classes your child detests. Many classes offer trial sessions so if you make the most of them now you can be sure you are choosing what’s right for your child come September. Just because their best friend is doing trampolining doesn’t mean your child will love it. • Some activities are so popular that they have long waiting lists (some over a year long!). Book early to avoid disappointment.
• You can avoid the mad panic of early September. It can be hard enough settling your child into nursery or getting them back into the routine of school, homework and getting up at the crack of dawn – the last thing you want to do is try to sort out clubs! • You’ll get your first choice of time slot. Some classes get so booked up that if you leave it until September the only time you’ll be left with is 7pm on a Friday

night – not fun! It’s not unheard of for parents to be queuing outside swimming pools from 6am on the morning registration opens, just to get a workable slot. After-school activities affect the whole family and you don’t want to have to pick up from activities while your other children are desperate for their supper. • You’ll get a class that works for your family. More than one child can mean more than one activity on the same afternoon and much as we’d like to be in two places at one time, it’s just not possible. Planning in advance means

Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening inherited disease, affecting over 10,000 people in the UK. You can’t catch or develop cystic fibrosis, it’s something you’re born with and most cases in the UK are now diagnosed soon after birth. It’s caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged with mucus, making it hard to breathe and digest food. 2014 is the 50th Anniversary of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and to help raise awareness, Karina Marvin shares her story with us. Ethan loves football. He’s midfield for Lee Rangers, and follows his dad’s team, Sheffield Wednesday. He is 7¼ and likes playing (and squabbling) with his siblings – Evie, 5 and Zac, 2 – ice cream, Star Wars and Lego. He dislikes spiders and cabbage, and he’s dubious about physiotherapy. He’s a normal lively little boy, but also a very special one – one in 2,500. He has cystic fibrosis (CF). Since diagnosis, at two days, he has had a strict daily treatment regime, including ‘physio’. Ethan was born with a blocked
bowel (meconium ileus), which affects 10 – 15% of babies with CF. Needing two laparoscopies in his first week, he spent 3½ weeks in the neonatal unit. ‘’It came as a terrible shock to us’’ Karina remembers. “We had absolutely no idea that there was anything wrong. It completely rocked our world. Our first baby, and we felt so helpless. We loved him dearly and were determined to keep him well. Doctors told us that, like 2.5 million other people in the UK, we are both carriers of a faulty gene and that Ethan had inherited this gene from us both. There was a 1 in 4 chance of each and every further baby having cystic fibrosis. Thankfully Evie and Zac are free from it. With Ethan finally home, we began his life-long treatment. Initially the physio meant clapping a wriggling baby on his back twice a day. Quite challenging! Now it involves using a PEP mask to exercise his lungs, blowing exercises, and a mucus-thinning nebulising treatment. Ethan is extremely active, swimming regularly. Exercise helps to keep his lungs clear from excessive thick, sticky mucous which could otherwise clog them. He accepts that his strict after-school treatment regime is necessary for him to stay healthy. We are very honest with him. There is never a day off, whether it’s his birthday, Christmas, or on holiday.” Ethan must also take enzyme tablets – Creon – with every meal. Without them he couldn’t digest his food and would fail to thrive. He has to eat more (high calorie) food than other children to maintain weight. “He is the envy of his class when he pulls out his chocolate biscuit at snack time! He
attends regular specialist hospital clinics, where they monitor height, weight, lung function and diet. The care is phenomenal. We have complete faith that the team want the best for Ethan as much as we do.” Ethan enjoys school. “The teachers are so supportive. They make sure Ethan takes his tablets and eats and drinks lots. They recently held a charity day when everyone came to school dressed in their favourite colour and Ethan talked to the children about his condition.” Cystic fibrosis dominates and changes family life for everyone. “It’s hard to juggle the needs of three children. Although busy, we also try to raise money for charity – our way of helping Ethan and others. We are hastening the day when the condition is no longer life-limiting. We must have hope.’’ Fifty years ago, frail children invariably attended special schools. Now they look so well it’s hard to believe they have such a serious condition. But they remain very susceptible to infections. “This is my constant fear. All children get colds, but with Ethan I worry that they will go to his chest. Minor bugs can develop into serious respiratory illness, so CF children are treated rigorously with antibiotics, sometimes intravenously. They are not allowed to mix with other CF kids, in case they pass each other infections. Consequently it’s not easy to meet other CF mums. Initially I felt very isolated. Ethan’s hospital has been great at introducing me to other families locally and through this and the local CF group I have made some great friendships. We all fight together for a better future.”
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust was founded in 1964 to research a cure, support patients and their families, and facilitate early diagnosis of the condition. The CF gene was identified in 1989 and gene therapy clinical trials are in progress. Although life expectancy has improved greatly, many precious lives are lost prematurely. Since 2007, CF testing has been included in the routine heel prick test for all new born babies. The Trust works with communities throughout the UK to help and support all those affected by the condition. A team of Public Affairs Officers works closely with cystic fibrosis patients and clinical care teams, providing support. What’s on Walking on the wild side at Knowsley Safari Park By Jayne Keep
Over the Easter break, we took the kids to Knowsley Safari Park; it was the first time we had been but it certainly won’t be the last. I had expected that a safari park wouldn’t be able to compete with the zoo for getting up close and seeing the animals; I thought they would be far away from the roads and we would all need binoculars to see them, when in fact we got really up close. We were parked right next to a group of sleeping lions and we had monkeys sat up on our bonnet! The kids were both amazed
and amused throughout the drive. There was a good variety of animals along the way – if any you wanted to get close to are a little shy on your first drive through you are welcome to drive back through again without any extra charge. And after your drive is complete, there’s still plenty to see and do. We watched the lovely and talented sea lions put on a show, viewed the birds, bats and reptiles in their relevant houses, before heading over to the funfair area for some great rides. Wristbands can be purchased for just £10 to get as many turns on the rides as you like – this is a real bargain and keeps the kids busy while the parents grab a coffee. Knowsley Safari Park is one of the best family days out we’ve had in a long time.
