As easy as riding a bike by Anna, editor@familiesglasgow.co.uk We’ve totally failed to get our 6 year old to ride her bike. She simply hates pedalling and balancing. So i noted with interest the youngest entrepreneurs to enter Dragons’ Den Sisters Kia and Sky Ballantyne, aged 14 and 12. Their clever product, a harness for children who are learning to ride their bike, started as school homework, and has grown into a business. They are now selling their Crikey Bikey® harness on their website www.crikeybikey.com and in national retailers such as Evans Cycles and Mountain Warehouse. The girls are running their business largely by themselves! I haven’t tried it yet, but do let me know if you’ve had any success with it...

A new online parent survey has been launched to find out when babies and toddlers learn to use cultural inventions Dr Elena Hoicka at the University of Sheffield is seeking to discover how children come to understand our world full of inventions, including ancient inventions, like spoons and modern inventions, like ipads. Parents across the world have been invited to participate in the study by completing the First Actions Survey at www.babylovesscience.com. For me, as a dad, buying, wrapping and playing with boys toys just came naturally. Brrrrrmmm, Meeemah or Chooo chooo. Easy. As boys grow older their toys don’t really change all that much (although we make less of the sound effects ourselves). So when my daughter deposited a small pile of dolls and teddies on my lap and said “Play daddy?” I naturally inspected them all for moving parts and on/off switches. I could find none. “Of course, darling but what do they do?” “We play with them. Will you play, daddy?” “Yes... but how? what do they do?” “They talk.” “Do they? But there’s no batteries?” Her face took on that slightly anxious, increasingly disappointed look (that I knew so well from her mother) which meant this situation was not at all turning how she’d planned. “It’s pretend, daddy. The rabbit is the shop keeper and the bumble bee is the customer.” “Errr.... right, got it. So errr.. what happens?” She sighed and looked over my shoulder, on the off chance a much better playmate might turn up at any moment. She took a deep breath. “Daddy, it’s easy. It’s just talking.” Just talking? That doesn’t sound easy at all. Not nearly as easy as brrrrmmmm anyway.

Cookin Castle Cookin Castle is a new online game for primary school age children and their teachers that has been developed by Food Standards Scotland (FSS) to help improve children’s diet and food hygiene practices. Cookin Castle supports the Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence and uses a friendly wizard to guide pupils through the website and games which aim to teach pupils the importance of a healthy balanced diet. New Ski School at CairnGorm Mountain Natural Retreats new, in-house ‘Snow School’ is opening for the 2015/2016 ski season. They now stock iconic Burton Riglet Snowboard equipment specially designed for children so even under-fives can reap the benefits of the mountains with boards as small as 70cm long. Lessons for the under-five age group will be one-to-one and up to two-to-one for six to eight year olds, so that parents can be carefree, safe in the knowledge that their kids are in the good hands. One day of lessons at the Ski School, including ski pass and ski hire, costs £99 for adults, £75 for children and seniors and £57 for under 5’s. Burton Riglet snowboard lessons are available for under 5’s for £35 per hour. Santa’s Sleepover Show is the brand new fun-filled singalong show for the whole family from FUNBOX. Anya, Gary, Kevin and Bonzo the Dog (formerly of The Singing Kettle) are having a sleepover and everyone’s invited, but they’re too excited about Christmas to get any sleep. They’re staying up to see Santa, but there are keys to find, a Funbox to open and friends old and new to meet - including the Funsters; Fluffy and Flossie. Packed with singalong favourites like “Aiken Drum’, ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ as well as brand new songs, it’s the perfect interactive festive treat for kids of all ages - from nought to ninety.
