Hello! With a certain other half careering towards his half century mark in May, we were definitely in the right frame of mind for this issue! But party ideas for adults are a lot more difficult to decide on and we found ourselves wishing we were still at an age where we didn’t have to think twice about doing something active before scoffing the food and cake – and where we also didn’t have to worry about ending up with snapped hamstrings (as said nearly 50 year old experienced when he raced his sons on the beach last summer to prove he was still speedy)! So we’ve settled for something a little more sedentary for us, and are leaving the active stuff to the youngsters – and honestly, they’re spoilt for choice as you can see in our party feature! Happy celebrations!

Marketing Cheshire and Jodrell Bank are teaming up to deliver the third Amazed by Science Festival this spring half term. But a new survey of 2,000 adults by Pod Space has revealed that many parents are finding no time for themselves at all. The results showed that 32% of respondents said they spent too much time on chores to have any time for personal matters. Around a third said they only achieve five to six hours of sleep each night and a similar number said they were too busy to exercise. 40% said they had no time for hobbies and that the needs of the family had to come first. Sadly, we can really identify with this. Time for a change we think.

Puddle Ducks swimming teachers go the distance
Puddle Ducks swimming teachers Nicola Wragge and Vanessa Watts have been jointly selected as ‘Teachers of the Term’ in the company’s recent internal competition. Vanessa and Nicola (known as Ness and Nici) were nominated by Mum Nichola, who lives in Warrington and whose daughter swims at Delamere, due to their support of deaf children and commitment to learning sign language. Both teachers have worked hard to learn sign language in
order to support deaf children in their classes and Nici also completed her deaf awareness training and is now accredited to teach deaf children. Many more Puddle Ducks teachers are also developing their skills and the company is working with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) to ensure their lessons are deaf-friendly. The competition was judged independently by Frances Donkin of Rhythm Time Cheshire. Puddle Ducks teach their Baby & Pre-School classes, as well as their Swim Academy classes at a number of locations across Cheshire including Alsager, Delamere, Weaverham, Sandbach, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Warrington, Sale and Crewe. How to organise holiday childcare By Claire Muffett-Reece Worried how you’ll juggle work with childcare over holidays? Relax – there are plenty of options to ensure you’ll still be employed come the first week of September… Looking after your children during half terms and the seemingly never ending summer holiday is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the kids. But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer break.
Relatives Your first port of call should be looking at close family members to see if anyone could potentially help out. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to spoil their grandchildren with days out and endless supplies of ice cream! Bear in mind their age and don’t over-burden them if they agree to help, sticking to set times and helping with packed lunches or sending your kids with pocket money towards yet another trip to the zoo. It might be free childcare for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t cost your parents!

An alternative to traditional holiday clubs, Skill Club at The Link, Sandbach School offers a variety of different activities each day. School mums Why not have a chat with other mums at the school gates to see if they can help? A win-win situation; your child gets to spend the day with one of their friends – plus you save on childcare costs! Make sure you only ask mums you feel confident leaving your child with – and who your little one feels comfortable around – and take a little gesture of thanks over at the end of the day, such as a small box of chocolates. However, most mums might instead prefer a ‘play date swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day in the week and you look after theirs another. Childminders For many working parents, childminders are the best option over the school holidays, often sticking to the same person they normally get to do the school drop off and pick up. If you don’t have one, ask friends and other mums who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. A more affordable solution to higher-priced kids’ clubs, remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as you providing your child’s meals or whether you’re expected to pay if they are sick or you go away.
Holiday play schemes/summer camps Open most kids’ school bags towards the end of term and you’ll find half a dozen leaflets offering discounted daycare for specific age groups and boasting a number of fun activities. Usually catered to fit around school hours, they are often based on themes to appeal to your youngster, with football, science, dance and drama top of the hit-list. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process. Working from home Last, but by no means least, is the hope your boss might be sympathetic to your situation and agree to let you work from home every now and then. Explain your childcare struggle as soon as you can, asking if a day a week might be an option over the holidays before giving them time to think about it. If they agree, make sure you complete all tasks assigned to you on time – regardless of the distractions that come with a demanding child at home! Not getting your job done at home will soon be picked up by management, meaning you’ll most definitely be refused if you ever broach the subject again!

Parents’ place Sugar Tax unfair on diabetics? Summer in the Alps Parents of children with Type 1 diabetes (results in a sudden drop in sugar levels in the body that can put them in a coma if not quickly brought back up with a sweet drink or snack) have said that the newly announced plans to introduce additional tax on sugary products may unfairly
penalise their children, as they sometimes use energy drinks to manage their sugar levels. They have pointed out that, while parents of children with Celiac disease can get prescriptions for gluten-free foods, parents of diabetic children will have to pay more for their sweet drinks.

Parties Seven party themes kids will love By Sally J. Hall
Parties can go with a swing if you choose a theme that your little ones can have fun with 1. Pirates Invitations: Create a treasure map with “X marks the party spot” and a pirate poem with plenty of “aaaaaahhhhhhhs!” Wear: Dress as a pirate and make eye patches to wear. Play: Fill a wooden chest with torn up newspaper and pop in some lucky dip gifts. Eat: Give them chicken, vegetable or fish fingers and let them eat with their hands and make jelly with pomegranate seeds in it to look like sunken treasure. 2. Disney Invitations: Use stickers of Disney characters and glitter. Wear: Offer accessories such as paper crowns and a sash made from coloured paper. Old net curtains make good veils. Play: Create a Disney piñata by covering a balloon with papier maché and turn it into a Mickey Mouse head. Eat: Serve drinks in plastic goblets for a castle theme and make cucumber sandwiches for Princes and Princesses.
3. Superhero Invitations: On Superhero coloured invitations, write: “Dear SuperZac, please come to my Superhero party.” Wear: Make simple masks for each child and a badge with their name and super power. You can also make capes from plastic tablecloths. Play: Create a super hero obstacle course from ropes, pop-up tunnels, boxes and cushions, then have a quiz about superhero powers. Eat: Add cake toppers with “Boom!” “Pow!” and “Zap!” on them to cupcakes. 4. Tea Party Invitations: Make invitations festooned with flowers from wrapping paper and doilies. Wear: Make accessories such as fascinators or hats and bow ties. Play: This theme really suits all those old-fashioned party games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs. Eat: Tea can be a traditional one with
little sandwiches and dainty cakes. Look for cardboard tiered cake stands and use pretty cloths and bunting. 5. Jungle Invitations: Make animal themed invitations; these can be as simple or artistic as you like. Wear: Come as your favourite animal or get your guests to bring an animal toy. Play: Have a Safari game in the garden where you hide pictures of animals which the kids have to spot, then play Sleeping Lions. Eat: Create a Bush Tucker Trial with the use of jungle themed plates and cups. 6. Circus Invitations: Create a big, red Clown’s shoe or circus ticket as the invitation. Wear: Dress as circus folk; ballet costumes double as acrobats, riders can wear jodhpurs and boots and all the kids can be clowns with some face paint.
Play: Buy modelling balloons and then play some tumbling games. Eat: Make popcorn, have hotdogs and burgers, and don’t forget the ketchup and mild mustard. 7. Football Invitations: Make football shaped invitations. Wear: Whether it’s their school PE kit or a duplicate of their favourite team’s uniform, ask the kids to dress for a game of football. Play: Ask a coach from a local team to teach skills such as keepy-uppy. Eat: Use paper cloths in your team’s colours with matching napkins. Eat football ground-style food such as burgers and chips.

Parties Climbing the Awesome Walls
My eldest daughter has had a bit of a dilemma each birthday for the last couple of years as she feels too old for a party (at 10?!), but still wants to do something to celebrate with her friends
The perfect solution is something activity based where the kids get to try something new together, have a laugh and follow it up with some cake. So this year we took Lily and a group of friends to Awesome Walls in Stockport to try some indoor climbing wall fun. Their parties are hosted by fully qualified instructors so you’re guaranteed safety and the kids are shown the correct way to climb. We had two hosts for Lily’s party, both of whom were brilliant, helping the kids out, making it fun for everyone. They pushed

the ones who were confident, popping in the odd racing challenge here and there, but then altering what was asked of the more timid climbers and the younger members of the group. Everyone had plenty of turns working on a couple of different walls, honing skills going both up and down! The session was rounded off with a game of Twister on a lower level wall. I watched from the mezzanine level with a coffee; a convenient viewing platform that puts you at a good height for some action shots…plus it gives
the mums a chance to relax and chat. For party food and cake after the action, there’s a great area just out of the main hall. My kids, Lily (10), Izzy (7) and Logan (5) gave this party a big thumbs-up. Perfect for boys and girls, it appeals to a good range of ages, with lots of fun and laughs, good exercise and a new skill learned. Definitely gets a Families recommendation. Dandy Farm Outdoor Adventure Parties Following on from the amazingly popular and successful My Little Pony Parties comes the new Dandy Farms Outdoor Adventure Parties. Let your children unleash their sense of adventure and have some good old fashioned farm fun.
