National Theatre comes to the classroom This September, three acclaimed National Theatre productions will be available on demand in schools. Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, and Nicholas Hytner’s productions of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Rory Kinnear, and Othello with Adrian Lester, will be free to stream on demand in every secondary school classroom in the UK. Each play is recorded in front of a live theatre audience by National Theatre Live, and comprehensive learning

Share-A-Story This May welcomes the annual National Share-A-Story Month, a rousing celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing. Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, it’s a wonderful opportunity to bring children and stories together. There are a whole host of events running across the country, from storytelling workshops to craft activities and puppet shows, and this year the theme for National

Share-A-Story Month is Dragons! Find out about the culture of Chinese, Welsh and Viking dragons in stories and poems, explore myths and legends about dragons, and even discover what a dragon might like for tea. Volunteer this year Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June this year. Volunteering can make a real difference to your own life and the lives of those around you, but it’s important for anyone thinking about giving their time to find a volunteering opportunity which is right for them, whether it’s supporting a victim of crime or helping

out at a local sports club. New development checks Parents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two, as part of new reforms to help families. With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. ‘No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,’ said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. ‘There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear. Today’s announcement will mean more families

can get valuable information in a more convenient way.’ Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter added, ‘We know it’s important to check children’s health and development when they are two, so that if extra support is needed it can be identified early. Integrated reviews and the huge increase in health visitors will lead to better outcomes for children and families.’ The Integrated Review, which will be implemented nationally from September 2015, will be available to children between 24 and 30 months old. Calling all Young Writers! Do you know a young author? The National Young Writers’ Awards judges are looking for the best short story (up to 500 words) based around this year’s theme of ‘Strange Events and Peculiar Happenings’. Walk to School Week

Yes, it’s that time of year again. This year’s Walk to School Week takes place 18-22 May, bringing together nearly one million schoolchildren, teachers and parents, and this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet! Walk to School Week is part of National Walking Month, which takes place throughout May. It also includes Walk to Work Week (11-15 May), so we parents don’t get out of it either! This year, Walk to School Week is all about the health benefits of walking. During the week, Walk to School mascot Strider encourages pupils to take his 5-Day Walking Challenge – supported by their fantastic classroom-focused pack. Day 1 focuses on a healthy body, as daily exercise has numerous physical health benefits including helping to reduce the risk of childhood obesity and medical conditions such as cancer and

Education Freedom to Follow Dreams

In March The Manchester Grammar School teamed up with pupils from Withington Girls’ School and staged a production of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. This whole school production featured both Senior and Junior School boys who romped their way through this wonderful comedy. The experience for the Junior School boys sums up what life at MGS is like for them: inspirational and fun. Creating, innovating, problem-solving and investigating are at the heart of MGS’ Junior School curriculum. Specialist Senior School teaching offers more challenge, more insight into English, Maths, History, Science and Art. The Options Programme opens doors into areas such as Law, Business Enterprise, Robotics, Forensic Science and Digital Photography. In addition, boys experience a vast array of

extra-curricular activities, ranging from sport and music to more advanced academic pursuits. Junior School boys have automatic entry into the Senior School in Year 7 so preparation for entrance exams and SATs, something which can so dictate the experience of children in many schools, is not part of the picture at MGS. Set up less than 2 years ago by mum and writer Milli Hill, The Positive Birth Movement has rapidly grown and now boasts over 150 groups in the UK alone, with hundreds more worldwide. Positive Birth Groups are completely free to attend and are a place for all pregnant women – regardless of their background, experience or choices – to come together and share experiences, thoughts, feelings and insight about childbirth. Many are run by birth professionals such as doulas or midwives, while others are organised by women who are simply passionate about birth as a positive experience. Positive Birth Groups aim to be a helpful part of pregnancy, a warm and welcoming place to hear stories and ideas. Consider what you really want from your childbirth experience, learn about your rights and choices, and challenge any fears or negative expectations you might have. Recently the Daily Mail published an article about three toddlers, Ellie, Amelie and Wsam who accidentally swallowed button batteries. Their heartbreaking stories demonstrate the devastating damage that the batteries can cause if swallowed. In Wsam’s case, the battery killed him. Why are button batteries so dangerous? The electrical charge from the battery creates caustic soda inside the body. This can burn a hole through major blood vessels and children bleed to death. Button batteries are found in many different household items. Amelie’s mum thinks it was a new battery for the kitchen scales. Ellie’s mum suspects the battery came from a TV remote control. Act now. Art Don’t try this at home. No seriously. This is one to hire a hall for and call in the experts. Arty parties are fab fun but frankly terrifying if you have a home that you’re proud of. The idea of a dozen Reception children attempting to find the toilet, while their hands are coated in a mixture of purple paint and glitter is enough to make your reach for a lunchtime Sauvignon Blanc. We have some super local providers who can save you the stress of a pre-school redecoration of your home. Try your local pottery café, or a nearby art class and put off the wine till tea time!

How to avoid serving a can of worms at yourchild’s next celebration... Sleepovers Let’s face it. They shouldn’t be called sleepovers. They should be called stay awake overs because you will sleep about as well as a meerkat balanced on a branch and the kids won’t sleep at all. However if you follow a few basic rules, you may survive. Keep the numbers low. As far as sleepovers go, more is definately not merrier but it is noisier. Keep them busy – I’ve heard tales of parents setting up night time obstacle courses to exhaust their pint sized house guests. Remove electrical devices at a reasonable hour and make sure you have a note of all parental contacts. As sure as night follows day someone will get homesick at about midnight and infect everyone. For those who do survive the overnight stay, arrange for an early collection. It gives you the day to remove Haribo from your beige carpet, and you’ll only have your own sleep deprived, sugar shocked child to deal with.

Swimming Most mums are reluctant to strip off to a swimsuit when the sun is shining and the sangria’s flowing. So the thought of doing it in front of your school gate ‘chums’ while at the local pool is unthinkable. However a swimming party is always a popular choice. Avoid hosting a swimming party for younger children – wait until your child and their friends are fairly competent swimmers, thus removing the need for parental submersion. Seek out a pool that offers an inflatable soft play area – you’ll find these at many council run pools – and you’re guaranteed a splashing time. Many such pools have a low rate room for hire so you can follow the wet fun with a homemade party tea to keep costs down.

Most of us wouldn’t dream of turning up to a party uninvited. Yet some parents feel it acceptable to bring along a string of siblings and presume they too are welcome. “They won’t eat. In fact you won’t even know they’re here,” cry the parents as they sprint out of the door, while said siblings begin pilfering from the pre-prepared party bags. The point is if you’ve budgeted for 20 and catered for 20, you’re ready for 20 children – not 25. Very often entertainers insist on a maximum number and siblings can tip you over the limit, and in turn, tip you over the edge. Prevent the problem at the point of invite and make the sibling rule clear. A simple ‘Sorry, no room for siblings!’ means there’s no question. I find the addition of an exclamation mark makes you look fun and not mean.

CAN YOU…..exclude individual children? This is a tough one because as a general rule, you should stick to one of 3 party invite rules. 1. Invite the whole class – this is perfect for Reception age children 2. Invite all the girls or all the boys – this becomes popular as children head into KS2 and the opposite sex become toxic 3. Invite a few close friends – this works when you’re keeping the budget down or as you head towards the end of primary school. However there are exceptions. If your child is the victim of a classroom bully, you’ve grounds to exclude that individual. This is YOUR child’s special day and they’re entitled to enjoy it without fear. Excluding problematic children is more difficult. Instead, it’s best to ask the parents of said child to stick around to offer a helping hand. CAN YOU…..fine a parent for a ‘no show’? There is little more irritating than the parent who confirms their child will be joining the party, only for them to leave an empty chair at the birthday table. The tale of the mum who billed a parent after they failed to show up to her son’s skiing party certainly made party no shows THE talk of the playground. Was she right to have sent the invoice? The reality is there will always be ill-mannered individuals who choose to accept an invite, and go on to make other plans without letting you know. In a world of text messages and emails, a no-warning no-show is simply unacceptable. But it’s also inevitable at some point in your party-throwing life. Invoicing a parent may make the headlines and also make you feel better for a while, but it’s likely to alienate your child and make YOU the subject of ridicule at the school gates. Our advice is to make a point of asking what happened to those no-shows when you next bump into the parent. In my experience you maximize the middle class embarrassment the more parents there are to witness it.
