Hello! OK, we confess, it’s been pretty hard to get into the Christmas spirit this early here at Families HQ. It seems like only yesterday we were planning our summer jollies, and suddenly we’ve had to switch gear and get all tinselled up! At least it’s made it a bit easier to resist the supermarket’s early sales of buckets of chocolates, although we can feel ourselves weakening…. As usual, there’s loads to do in the area over the festive season – countless fabulous panto’s and other family shows, shopping fairs, finding santa….and you’ll find everything you need right here! Stamp out bullying
National Anti-Bullying Week takes place 17–21 November, with this year’s theme of Let’s Stop Bullying Together. The Anti-Bullying Week website is packed with resources for schools, parents and children, plus online workshops and short films on how to survive bullying. Why not take part in their Anti-Bullying Competition, too? ‘Let’s Stop Bullying Together’ is an exciting opportunity for children to get involved in Anti-Bullying Week by designing a gadget, drawing a picture, writing a story, song or poem, taking a photo, or shooting a film or documentary. Get into film
Explore the power of film with Into Film Festival 2014. Taking place 4–21 November, this three-week festival is packed with free screenings and workshops for ages 5–19, with highlights including exclusive premieres and previews of new feature films, workshops, special events and Q&A sessions with industry experts, accompanied by innovative teaching resources.
Highlighting both the educational power of film and the magic of cinema, the festival is open to schools, parents and youth groups and offers a wealth of opportunities for a fun and stimulating day out. The event hopes to build on the success of last year’s festival, which saw over 200,000 young people attending over 1,300 special screenings and events across the UK. It‘s a fantastic opportunity to get young people to cinemas that they wouldn’t otherwise visit and have a collective experience that they can then take back to the classroom to discuss, plus they get to watch films they wouldn’t otherwise necessarily see. Join the Pants Hats revolution and fight childhood cancer A Cheshire mum has launched an innovative new campaign, the ‘Pants Hats Project’ to raise vital funds for children’s cancer research charity, Kidscan. Inspired by her then one-year-old daughter’s habit of wearing her brother’s pants on her head, Emi Lou Howe, from Helsby decided to write a fun story on the subject and raise money in the process. Her first illustrated book, ‘Pants Hats,’ set in a hospital, follows the story of very different characters who like wearing pants, rather unconventionally, on their heads. The book, which was created with a mixture of paint, fabric, texture and graphic design, has been produced using Amazon’s new Create Space print-on-demand publishing arm. After losing her father to the disease when she was 24, Emi Lou has been a long time fundraiser for Cancer Research. Having children of her own resulted in
her being drawn to children’s cancer charities, with Kidscan standing out as a children’s cancer research specialist. Just two months into the Pants Hats project, Emi Lou herself was diagnosed with cancer. Lowri Turner, Fundraising Manager at Kidscan, said: “It’s hard to put into words how amazed we are by Emi’s unwavering enthusiasm and commitment to supporting Kidscan. Both she and the ‘Pants Hats’ book are absolutely incredible, and we hope that everyone enjoys reading it as much as we do.” To buy the book and help raise vital funds for childhood cancer, please visit www.kidscan.org.uk. To accompany National Anti-Bullying Week, Actionwork is running Anti-Bullying Month throughout November, with a theme of Creatively Dealing with Bullying. The Anti-Bullying Roadshow tours the UK with a packed spectacle showcasing a variety of strategies in dealing with bullying, and highlighting ways to empowerment. Music and science, strategies and up-to-date research on bullying are all used in the workshops, plus they run Anti-Bullying Puppet Shows for younger children and creative
cyberbullying workshops for older kids. Bullying can happen to anyone at any age and at any time. National Anti-Bullying Week recommends ChildLine as an excellent resource on how to spot bullying, possible reasons of why bullying occurs and suggestions on how to stop it. Education All round performance at “The Prep”
Hammond Preparatory School in Chester provides a calm, caring environment for pupils from ages 3–11 and offers a separate and secure Key Stage 1–2 education. A foreign language for all at Primary school As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. According to the DfES programme of
study: “A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.” With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages.

September saw the arrival of a new Headmaster for Stockport Grammar Junior School. Mr Tim Wheeler joined SGS after six years’ service as Headmaster of Hereford Cathedral Junior School and before that, Bilton Grange in Rugby. Educated at Sheffield, Cambridge and Bath universities, Mr Wheeler also has a background as an Educational Consultant, specialising in strategic school improvement and development planning. Mr Wheeler told us: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my first weeks at the school and
already feel very much at home here. The children were very excited to come back after the summer holiday and, in the early days they were all rushing up to say hello and tell me all that they have been doing. Jump Nation puts a spring into Izzy’s party Although traditional birthday parties always go down a treat, my gang have have come to expect something more as I, perhaps stupidly, aim for a completely different party experience each year. But when you have three children, looking for a fresh idea can soon get tricky! The problem was solved this year by Jump Nation, the new trampoline park in Trafford. We took 10 kids along for Izzy’s 6th birthday to test out this new venue. The park is simple but brilliant, wall to wall, and even up-the-wall trampolines. The kids had an amazing time bouncing their way around the room and launching themselves into the foam pit. After a full hour of exercise they were red faced and ready to eat. I have never seen plates of pizza & chips and ice cream sundaes disappear so quickly! Party guests share the use of the park with other visitors but can have exclusive use of the party room to eat, chat, play etc. Numbers on the park are carefully monitored so there aren’t too many bodies on there and staff are bouncing too to make sure everyone is ok and sticking to safe play. If you are taking any younger guests there is a designated under 5’s zone with some additional obstacles to keep them amused. Feedback from the kids was a definite thumbs up. On trend with a green party
The sky has been the limit for kids’ parties in recent years – some parents spend thousands on making sure their child’s birthday treat goes with a swing. But the latest trend is to spend less and to be more environmentallyfriendly. Joanna Moorhead reports. After two decades of organising birthday parties for my four children, one truth is crystal clear to me: spending a lot doesn’t guarantee a successful bash. On the contrary, you can host a brilliant party that goes down in the history of your child’s friendship group for a reasonably small amount of money. The fact is, there are only two big things that matter when it comes to your party going well: planning, and luck. Planning means thinking ahead, having a timetable (even a rough one, in your head; better still a written-down one, in your notebook or on your iPad). Luck means the sun shines, no-one scrapes their knee, the candles light when you strike the matches and the camera doesn’t stop working as you’re poised for the essential, round-the-cake shot. Given that most of us have realised that spending doesn’t a good party make (though a bit of outlay is inevitable, and it’s crucial to spend wisely), many parents have also got to thinking that it’s a shame so many parties involve so much waste. We put too much food out on the table; too much gets messy
and left and ends up being thrown in the bin. And, given that we’re all trying to be more environmentally-friendly, parties seem like a good (and reasonably easy) place to start. Here are our top tips on how to have a party that goes with a swing – and is green… • Don’t overdo the food. Don’t pile too much on the table; have more in the fridge or on standby to whip out if needed • Don’t use paper plates – it’s easy to scrape them quickly and chuck them in the dishwasher • Buy big packets of e.g. biscuits, crisps etc. Not only does that mean less waste, it’s also cheaper – and many of the ‘healthier’ brands of crisps only come in big packets • Shop-bought cakes are stuffed with sugar, so make your own: and if you don’t make cakes, try to find a local, home-based cake maker who will do one for you. • We’re great fans of story tellers and magicians at Families and have had absolutely wonderful parties being entertained by some of our local professionals. .. sometimes it is just so worth it! Can 3 hours change someone’s life? By Helen Howe
Just over two years ago, with my own children all at school, I started volunteering with Home-Start. It has been an incredible experience for me and one that I can truly recommend to people from all walks of life. It’s an amazing charity which provides practical and emotional support for families with children under the age of 5. Home-Start supports parents who are struggling with all kinds of situations: post-natal illness, loneliness, disability, bereavement, isolation, health issues, single parenthood, financial issues, behaviour issues, safeguarding issues or just exhaustion from having to cope with several young children. This certainly resonated with me when I came across them – my husband was diagnosed with cancer when I was pregnant with our third child. With two children already, aged just 2 and 1, I personally don’t know how I would have coped without amazing support from friends and relatives – but how would someone without that support keep going?
Winter warmers Families honorary team member Lily Keep (8) tries some new winter kit. Mum Jayne reports: As the cold weather starts to draw in it’s time to reach for thicker, warmer coats so the outdoor fun doesn’t need to stop. If you’re playing out in the Winter the last thing you want is cold wet feet. We put some fab boots by Sorel to the test to see if they could stand up to Lily’s very outdoor lifestyle. As a volunteer, I received in-depth training to equip me for my role – every situation was covered and volunteer safety is an absolute priority. As a volunteer, you visit families in their own home, giving practical and emotional support. My support roles have involved all kinds of things – helping mum get out and about, dealing with stressful environments, giving support with behavioural issues, looking after siblings during hospital appointments and just being there to listen. For most families, a visit from their Home-Start helper is the highlight of their week – a chance to get some support on an emotional and practical level – a few hours when they can relax a little, knowing help is at hand. But the rewards are not just for the families. I have gained so much from being a volunteer – the pleasure in getting to know these families and the knowledge that your time has made a difference to their week – there’s nothing like the satisfaction of being greeted by a hug from a grinning 2 year old! Three hours a week in term time. That was my commitment to them. Not a lot of time, but what a difference it can make to someone’s life. Knutsford based optometrist Wendy Diddams explains the importance of regular eye checks. Children learn through their eyes more than any other sense, yet we spend more time checking their teeth! Vision develops from birth to around age 8, and to develop their full eyesight potential children must see clearly during this critical period – treatment for a lazy eye for instance may not work so well after this age, and can affect their future career and sporting opportunities. Eye checks are fun and free for all children
up to age 16 on the NHS, so don’t let your child miss out! I chose to specialise in Children’s vision because it means I can make a real difference to a child’s chances in life, and seeing lots of young patients makes my job so much more fun! I regularly see babies and children from as young 3 months, and try to make the experience fun not scary. It seems to work as I am often told by parents how much children love coming for their eye test! In my opinion all children should have an eye examination by the age of 3 to make sure there’s time to correct any problems well before school. We have many different tests, 3D pictures and funny glasses to wear, but much of the examination relies on special techniques that make it possible to even test babies. Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared and have bought all your presents already, there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves. But what about the small, local, independent retailers? The businesses which are owned and run by local residents, often parents who are trying support their own families. Small businesses easily get ‘lost’ in the hubbub of Christmas, when really it’s a time of the year when we should be using them just as much, if not more, than usual. Yes, the large supermarkets and big online retailers can offer price savings, because they are big and they have bulk-buying power. But they don’t offer low prices to save you money, they offer them to make more profit for themselves, by offering loss leaders, or by negotiating lower prices from their suppliers, who then haggle with the manufacturers, who end up making smaller profits themselves,
and sometimes even selling at a loss. But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? These are the things that small businesses generally excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience. You may not get the lowest prices, but you do get excellent value for money. Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your local economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and on and on. Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday 6 December.

Local businesses are also often more willing than larger chains are to support local causes that have more meaning to them, and the area in which they live and work.
One Stop Shopping at Christmas Card Shop Christmas shoppers across Cheshire can take advantage of the wide range of charity Christmas cards and the eclectic and quirky selection of gifts and stocking fillers in the annual pop-up Christmas card shops. With cards from up to fifty local and national charities and a wide choice of gifts such as leather gloves, fashion scarves, toys, stocking fillers and family games, shoppers can save time and stress by buying from one of the six shops run by the Combined Charities Christmas Shops Association. Every penny spent on the cards goes back to the participating charities, while purchases of gifts help the organization fund all the costs incurred, such as room rental, insurances, bank charges, and publicity. Participating charities include St Ann’s Hospice, The Christie, Independent Age, Wilmslow Wells, and NSPCC. Cards supporting the British Heart Foundation, UNICEF and RNLI are also available for purchase. The shops are open until early December at the Wilmslow, Altrincham, Macclesfield, Sale and Hale Libraries, and also at Curzon Cinema, Knutsford. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… Opening the advent calendar and counting down the days until Christmas is always exciting for little ones, but for us parents having to either try and refuse chocolate before school, or defuse the arguments over whose turn it is today – or both! – it can be less than fun. So why not forgo the chocolate this year, and make a Christmas activity advent calendar instead? Write a list of different Christmasthemed or special activities that you can enjoy as a family, and put one activity in each day of the advent calendar. You can make them as simple or as elaborate as you like – whatever works for you! If your children are usually tired after school try and keep the weekday activities quieter, then you can enjoy the more active ones at the weekend.

Joseph plays Jack’s younger brother, Silly Simon. Steve Nallon is probably best known for his legendary impersonations of Margaret Thatcher and other political figures in the 1980s satirical TV show Spitting Image. He has since gone on to work as an actor and voice artist, developing a repertoire that ranges from Julie Andrews to all the characters of Harry Potter. In Jack and the Beanstalk he appears as Dame Trott, Jack’s lovable but hopeless mum who is forced to sell the family cow when she and her two sons fall on hard times. Britain’s Got Talent comes to Manchester The nation’s favourite talent show, Britain’s Got Talent is back on the road once again scouring the length and breadth of the country with its biggest-ever open audition tour visiting a total of eleven cities across the UK and Ireland. The show will be heading to Manchester from Sunday 7 – Tuesday 9 December to uncover some of the best talent around, looking for wonderful, weird and astounding acts for next year’s series. Aspiring stars can attend auditions between 11am and 6pm at Manchester Central Convention Complex (M2 3GX). This year’s winners musical theatre boy band Collabro, who were crowned in front of an audience of 13million viewers at home, have gone on to amazing success having secured a No.1 hit with their debut album Stars. The band will also be touring next year alongside fellow 2014 finalist Lucy Kay, who is has just released her debut album Fantasia.

Other success stories from this series include musical duo Bars & Melody whose single, Hopeful reached number 5 in the chart in July, and swing band Jack Pack, who have recently signed a deal to release their debut album in 2015.
