Capturing the Smiles

Having trouble photographing your kids at play? Tracy Carncross from Carncross Photography, the London based photographer who took our cover image for this issue, shares with us a few helpful tips for taking amazing shots of your own.

Use A Fast Shutter Speed If you’re a parent, I don’t need to tell you that kids move fast! When photographing your child, use the fastest shutter speed you can. With a faster shutter speed, you will be able to grab that moment without their face becoming an unrecognisable blur. Separate Your Child from the Background An easy trick for any Mum or Dad is to photograph your child farther away from the background then they are to you. When you place yourself closer to your child, you are able to give the photo more dimension. By doing this you create whats called depth of field, and your eyes will naturally draw to your children in the photo, making them the main subject. Let them play! Our kids tend to feed off of our emotions. If you are stressed, they in turn, become and act stressed as well. The more relaxed your kids are the more likely you are to get an honest expression. So let them play and have fun! You can even let them get a little dirty. They will be happy, and the photographs will tell the truth! Get in close... I love to get close up shots of children. There is just something innocent and telling when you look into those big bright eyes. Its almost as if you are looking through a window all the way to their hearts! ...Or further back! By taking photos from far away, you get to see them in contex of the environment. These kinds of photographs can really bring back memories and stir the emotions of the day when viewed in the years to come. Happy Snapping! Creating LASTING Family Memories

By Alex Gregory

What are the childhood experiences you remember? For me, it’s the things I did outside with my family and, interestingly, they weren’t always long or complicated activities. I remember digging a really deep hole in the garden with dad, so deep I could hide inside it. I remember the day when we crossed the fields to the stream not far from home and ate an apple while sitting on a branch overhanging the water. Getting outdoors is beneficial for adults as well as children. It’s something that’s available to everybody, it’s free, it’s healthy, it’s fun and, most importantly, it has the potential to create wonderful lasting memories. So what can you do together that will create lasting memories?

Sunrise and Sunset Moments There’s nothing more rewarding or simple. You’ll need to find a suitable location, at the top of a hill, or anywhere from where you can clearly see the sun rising or falling. If your children are anything like mine they will run about, climb trees or moan about being cold. That’s fine, don’t get frustrated, it’s all part of the experience. The greatest gift you will ever receive will arrive in 20 years’ time when one of them turns to you and says “Remember that time you woke me up before school and we climbed the hill to watch the sunrise. That was amazing!” Cooking over a Fire We often cook dinner outside in the garden. The kids get involved, cutting up the vegetables, mixing in ingredients and turning food. It’s fun and they get very engrossed.

4 Families west London

Roughly chopped veg in a foil parcel with a spot of olive oil, chicken or sausages on a metal grate or sweet potatoes wrapped in foil and buried in the embers are great options. They all cook quickly and easily, taste delicious and can be eaten whilst sitting around the fire together!

Make a Bird Feeder Turn a plastic bottle upside down, unscrew the lid and push it through a small plastic saucer. Fill the bottle with birdseed, screw the cap back on to hold the saucer in place and cut some holes in the bottle near the saucer to allow the seed to drop out. Hung from a tree this is a perfect, recycled bird feeder that is sure to attract a whole host of different birds wherever you live. This practical activity will be so rewarding for your child and the results can be seen immediately.

Build a Hedgehog House If you discover a hedgehog in your garden or nearby, then why not build a hedgehog house together? This can be a complicated palace or just an upturned wooden box, weatherproof and hidden in the corner of the garden. However you decide to do it, I promise you when your child discovers a hedgehog has moved into the house they made, their pleasure, pride and excitement will be long enduring. Fishing by Hand The underwater world has certainly grabbed my children’s imaginations and they now love nothing more than to be knee deep in a stream investigating the depths. In British rivers we

have these wonderful little camouflaged fish called Bullheads. They hide under rocks in fast flowing streams, sometimes living their whole lives under the same rock. With a little patience and guile, it’s possible to catch these little fish for a few moments using just your hands. The excitement of a first catch is unforgettable. Build a Bridge I spent many happy days making a bridge over my grandparent’s pond. I’ve done it with my kids since and they loved it too. Push two sticks firmly into the ground and cross them over to form an X. Repeat this a little further away, then lay more sticks across the X’s. Do this across a river, stream or pond, or even across your garden creating a walkway just above the water or ground. It’s simple and great fun.

July-August 2018

Sleep in a Hammock As long as there are two trees to which the hammock can be fastened, then you can have a wonderful night out under the stars. You can easily tie a rope directly overhead and lay a tarpaulin over the top to keep the rain off, creating an exciting, den-like feel. There’s nothing to beat drifting off to sleep outdoors while gently swinging in the breeze! Alex Gregory (MBE) is the only person to hold a World record in both Olympic Rowing and Ocean Rowing. He is also the author of Dadventures, a new book (published by HarperNonFiction on 31 May). Alex was motivated to write Dadventures during the 2017 Polar Row expedition when he realised that his children didn't care about him being a brave explorer; all they wanted was him to share small adventures with them closer to home.

Have kids, WILL travel! We all look forward to our annual summer holiday but sometimes it doesn’t always go to plan. The kids get travel sick, you forget (or lose!) their favourite soft toy, and you nearly miss your flight. Culminating in a massive argument before you are even on the plane (I may, or may not be speaking from experience here). I’ve asked Families readers from across the country for their top tips on how to move from frazzled to fun when you travel with children.

Check, and Check Again Make sure everyone's passport is valid, and, for travel further afield, not about to expire. Some countries like Mexico, require at least six months on your passport before it expires. Also check flight times and bag restrictions. We’ve all seen stressed out passengers in the check-in queue trying to reduce the contents of their suitcase at the airport. Don’t be one of them!

Pack with Precision Make sure you have a packing plan. While it seems a romantic notion to sling a few things in a bag and jump on a plane, those days are long gone. If you are taking hold luggage make sure you mix up the adult and kids clothes between two suitcases, to make sure you all have something to wear if one bag gets lost. Anne, mum of two girls, says, “Put swimwear for the whole family in your hand luggage in case all your bags get lost. If you can all go for a swim or to the beach on arrival, lost luggage won’t seem so bad!” Bring Food You can never have too many snacks. Most short-haul flights don’t provide food anymore, so you have to buy sandwiches and snacks, which are extortionately expensive. Plus, by the time the food trolley gets to you, the food has often run out, and the kids don’t want to eat it anyway! Marissa says, “For early starts, I chuck a load of cereal in small Tupperware containers so they can munch on them in the car or on the flight.”

Make it Fun Children love experiencing different modes of transport and being in new places. Sarah, mum to Mae, says, “We make it into an adventure! We talk to Mae about our journey a week or so in advance, so she’s enthused about it. Yves does rocket sound effects when the plane takes off or if there’s turbulence, so Mae thinks it’s all part of the same exciting adventure!” Judy says, "Involve them in the process, where to go, what to see, what to take. Get them to pack their own bag and agree on what to take for the flight to entertain and sustain them.”

Pack Surprises Break up a long journey with some fun toys to unwrap. “Go to a pound shop. Buy loads of small toys. Wrap them up and bring one out every hour! I’ve done lots of long-haul flights because we lived out in Singapore when mine were smaller” says Amanda, “and this works a treat."

Don’t Forget their Favourite Toy Most children have a blanket or toy they can’t sleep without. Make sure you, “keep their loved blanket/ toy out of the hold in case the luggage goes missing. We had luckily put my son’s beloved Stripey in my bag. Otherwise, my son wouldn’t have gone to sleep for the whole holiday” says Marissa.

Games are Good Top Trumps, Story Dice and sticker books are always winners. Mark says, “There are lots of travel games out there like Connect 4, Chess and Battleships, which we’ve found useful." Don’t forget external chargers for gadgets when it’s time to get out the iPad or Kindle.

Bring a Sling “Make sure you have a sling with you when you are flying if you have a baby. You won’t always have the pram until you pick up your luggage. Bumbags are good as compact nappy changing bags as the toilets are so small on planes and it’s easy to get things out when trying to change a nappy," says mum of two, Alison. "If you are flying you can also do an order at Boots and pick it up at the airport, especially for things like baby milk.” says Emma. Bring Spare Clothes These are “a must” if you have young children. Christine says, "Don’t forget spare clothes in your hand luggage for long-haul flights as you never know when you’ll be delayed or get a surprise stopover, (pack for at least a day, plus baby food). My husband (for once) praised my over-packing when we were delayed in Dubai on our way to Oz for 48 hours with a baby and only our hand luggage!”

Be Patient and Enjoy It As parents we can feel disappointed when the dream trip to Disney in Florida or sightseeing with the kids in Paris doesn’t go to plan. Jackie says being realistic helps, “Think about your mindset as a parent before you travel practising patience and going with the flow is a good idea. Also, lower your expectations of your children’s behaviour as they might be tired or feel different due to the journey. In my experience this creates a more harmonious trip.” Holidays are a great way to relax, unwind and bond with your family, just enjoy the bumps in the road too!

Avoiding Brain Drain during the Summer Holidays We all know that our children need a break during the summer, so they come back to school refreshed and ready to learn. However, research consistently shows that children can lose up to a third of what they have learned during the holidays. Here are eight great ideas to keep young brains active during the long break: Write a Summer Bucket List

Get the kids to write a list of things they want to do during the holidays. They can create a scrapbook or document it on a computer or tablet. Get them to research where the places are and the cost of visiting. Give them extra credit for finding free activities or keeping the trip under £20. You can also get them involved in household budgeting, shopping and cooking too. Read for Pleasure Remind them about the wonder of books. Being told what to read at school can make it less enjoyable, so let them choose what they want to read. Oxfam has dedicated bookshops at which you can pick up teen favourites and kids books for as little as £1. You can also sign up

your children for the Summer Reading challenge at the local library. This year’s theme is Mischief Makers, inspired by the classic comic, The Beano.

Get Outside Being outdoors in new environments will keep everyone happy as well as firing up brain neurons! A study by the University of Rochester has found that spending time outdoors not only makes you happier, it also leads to an increased sense of vitality. Being in nature can also calm the mind, boost creativity and improve focus and attention.

Take a Class Summer holiday workshops and camps can teach your children some new skills, which will also help their brains stay active. Circus skills, kayaking, and coding are all interesting options. (See our Summer Workshops feature on page 13).

Create Art Remember the holidays are supposed to be fun, so get the kids creating some fun art in the garden or kitchen. This will enhance their creativity and motor skills. Leysa Henderson, education specialist and author of Lost Lives says, “We need to

encourage creativity; it could be in the form of music, movement, art or cooking. Computer games keep us passive. I'm seeing more and more passive learners in schools as teachers feel under pressure to deliver an unrealistic curriculum. Give children a chance to get it wrong as it teaches resilience to push through challenges.”

Avoid Gadgets There are some great viral posts about this on social media, in which parents change the WiFi password at home and say to their kids they will only get it back if they tidy their rooms, read a book or go outside! You can set your own rules with this one. Most kids need an Xbox or mobile phone detox, so just set some limits on screen time and let them decide when they get to use their allocation.

Travel You’ll be relieved to know that travel does broaden the mind. Being on holiday helps families use their brains differently. According to new research, it can trigger systems in the limbic part of the brain PLAY and SEEKING (Panksepp 2016). Play is

July-August 2018

activated when you mess around in the sea or build sandcastles. Seeking is activated when you explore and find a new rock pool to investigate or restaurant for a meal. Professor Jaak Panksepp, a world-leading neuroscientist at Washington State University, has shown that being on a family holiday can activate these systems in both adult and children’s brains. This then triggers feel-good neuro chemicals like opioids, oxytocin, and dopamine. These make parents and children feel happier and less stressed and allow them to re-connect emotionally.

Mindset Matters Teach your children resilience and the growth mindset - for example, they aren’t good at something ‘yet.’ The fixed mindset is the belief that they can’t change or develop new or different skills, and are born clever or ‘arty’. The summer is the perfect time for them to try new things or develop existing skills and understand that you can become good at something if you practice. Children who have a growth mindset are much more likely to try a new challenge.

Helping your child avoid the language word gap An Oxford University Press (OUP) report published in April revealed that both primary and secondary schools teachers are seeing an increasing number of children with a limited vocabulary - a word gap.

Why the Word Gap Matters: Oxford Language Report found that without enough words a child will not only find it difficult to understand instructions at school, but also to play and communicate with others. Over 1,300 teachers surveyed reported that the word gap is not only affecting children’s achievements at school but also that it can have a damaging impact on self-esteem and a child’s ability to make friends.

In the report, OUP asked leading educational experts and teachers to offer their thoughts on the word gap and to share practical ideas on building children’s vocabulary and sparking their interest in learning new words. Here are just a few:

Not just reading but being read to In the OUP survey, 93% of primary school teachers said that a root cause of the word gap is that children aren’t spending enough time reading for pleasure. Reading is an important way for children to learn vocabulary as they are more likely to come across new words in books than they will in spoken language. Encourage your child by reading aloud and sharing picture books, traditional tales, or non-fiction books when they are young. Help them read as widely as possible as they develop their own reading skills. If you are looking for inspiration, you can find booklists for all ages/interests at: www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home

There are multiple benefits to reading aloud to your child, even when they are able read fluently.

familiesonline.co.uk

By Harriet Bayley

In this way your child experiences books that they may not be able to read on their own yet and is exposed to new words that they probably wouldn’t find in their own reading. For a bit of variety, try listening to audiobooks together great for long car journeys! Talk about books - ask your child what they liked or didn’t like about a story. What was their favourite bit? How do they think a character felt at a certain point? You can even try asking them to re-tell the story using their own words.

Talk, Talk, Talk! It goes without saying that parents talk to their children all the time. But research with very young children shows that if we use richer language, a child’s vocabulary can increase dramatically1 (e.g. instead of ‘Pick that up and bring it over here,’ say ‘Walk slowly to kitchen, pick up the fork carefully and return it to me’). Name and describe objects rather than falling back on pronouns (like ‘this’ and ‘that’). Try using alternative words for the same thing - instead of saying ‘It’s hot’, say ‘It’s scorching’ or ‘It’s blistering.’ Have Fun with Words Create an excitement around discovering and talking about new words together. Tell your child that it’s fine not to know what a word means - we are all learning new words all the time. When your child comes across a new word in a book encourage them to talk to you about what the word might mean. Encourage them to use the other words and sentences around it to try to work out the meaning. In the report, Why Closing the Word Gap Matters, teacher Janine Wooldridge suggests that older children reading on their own could be encouraged to write unknown words on a card

bookmark for you to discuss and look up in a dictionary together later. Talk about other ways you could use the new word - give them some examples of sentences using that word and encourage them to think of their own sentences.

You can find fun word activities and language games at: www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home

Pick up the Dictionary It’s helpful if your child has access to a dictionary and a thesaurus at the right level for them, written in language they can understand. A dictionary and thesaurus at home and at school are vital tools for developing and enriching children’s language and helping to improve their spelling. To choose the best dictionary or thesaurus for your child and help them with basic dictionary skills, you can visit the dictionary

Check for Understanding In the OUP report, educational psychologist Jean Gross (CBE) explains that she assessed children of all ages and abilities using a test that asked them to say what “on purpose” meant. Very few could do this, despite often hearing “You did that on purpose” at home and at school. Jean suggests that we should never assume that children know the meaning of even simple words. Make sure you check for understanding. To read the full report, visit: www.oxford.ly/wordgap 1 David

Preparing your child for School... If your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure!

Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips. Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources.

Communication and Language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and selfconfidence. Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding 8 Families west London

vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings throughout the day and develop a positive ethos around the importance of communicating and expressing feelings, of any kind. This will have multiple benefits (including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future.

Sharing and Interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, modelling language and behaviour which gives them strategies and words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future.

Respect for Behavioural Boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention Keeping hands/feet to themselves Sharing and taking turns Looking after things Tidying away Being kind to others You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others.

Physical (Gross and Fine Motor Skills) All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting. Exploring and Investigating Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about how to do something. Make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative,

July-August 2018

imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/toys). See what he or she does with it. In the latter stages of his or her ‘creation’ you may wish to step in to play too, but allow your child to initiate the direction of the play and conversation.

All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. Enjoy and treasure these precious last few months with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life. 5 Summer Holiday activities to boost your family’s Children work very hard during the school year and rightly deserve some time off to enjoy themselves. The summer holidays are a great time to refresh and recharge. With a careful bit of planning, they also provide a brilliant opportunity for children to develop key habits that will help them thrive when they go back to school in the autumn.

Remember to allow down time and unstructured play-time to feature as often as possible. It is actually good for your child to be bored! During the school year, your child’s days are filled with school work, activities, sports and clubs, leaving very little time for them (or us) to even think about what they WANT to be doing. Sometimes our children need to feel bored to come up with creative ways of spending their time. Holidays are a great time to undertake family activities like cycling, walking or even learning a new board game, but they can also include some powerful and simple activities that will stimulate the brains of all family members and help each one to get in touch with their inner self.

Here are my top 5 strategies for boosting you and your child’s physical and mental wellbeing this summer: Practice Self-Care Teaching our children the important practice of self-care is vital for their development and a great building block for their adult life. It’s great to start during the holidays when they are less governed by a strict timetable. Allow your child to tell you when they need to rest or when they want to read; offer them a bath in the middle of the day if they feel

they would like to relax. These things help connect us to our gut-feelings, which are usually overridden by our schedule and to-do list. Learn to give your body and mind what it needs as often as possible. Get Talking A weekly family meeting offers many benefits. Set a time and arrange a place for your family to

gather. No phones or other gadgets allowed. No television. You can either set a topic that you would like to discuss (like the next family holiday or even a rewards chart you want to get started) or allow anything to come up. This practice is about listening and being listened to. You could start by asking each person to tell the rest of the family how their week has been so far. Practice listening

and teach your child not to interrupt. Being listened to without the usual daily interruptions is a very powerful experience for adults and children alike.

Discuss Goals With hopefully a little more time at hand and longer summer evenings to be enjoyed, it can be lovely to talk with your child about their goals and dreams. Everyday life often leaves us with too little time to speak about anything that isn’t entirely necessary. Allow your child to dream! Then set a realistic goal which your child can achieve over the holidays. It can be as little or big as appropriate. From drawing a picture for each family member to learning a new skill, like roller blading. Setting a goal, working towards it and achieving it is an empowering and positive experience. You can always remind your child about how successfully he or she achieved this goal later on during the school year if things are tough. Explore Cultivate curiosity. Why does our brain ‘grow up’ and stop being

curious and explorative when we become an adult? Explore more, see the world with big, wide, open eyes. Maybe go for a walk in your local neighbourhood and walk down streets that you have not been down before. Your child can take a packed-lunch and you can make it into a real adventure. Or print off a map and ask your child to lead you to a certain destination. Or maybe watch a YouTube video about weird and wonderful animals together. Something that takes you out of your every day experience will offer you and your child a fun way to connect.

Try Something New Discuss with your child what you could try out that is new to you both. Pick something age and budget-appropriate. It doesn’t need to be a bungee-jump! You could order some clay and try making a vase; cook a new healthy recipe, which your child picks out of a magazine; or head to your nearest car boot sale and sell some old toys. Have a happy summer!

18 things to do with your under 5’s this Summer

When term time classes and drop in activities for under 5’s shut up shop for the summer holidays, you may be left feeling as if the only entertainment options available are leisure attractions which can be expensive and are sometimes not age-appropriate. So, here’s the lowdown on alternative fun for your toddlers and pre-schoolers during this time. By Vanessa Christie

Getting Back to Nature

Mini Beast Mayhem A child’s fascination with bugs can be fascinating to watch. Give them a pot and a little shovel and set them to work exploring under pots, logs, loose soil and leaves. Just maybe don’t do what I did and let the ‘bug hotel’ come inside. Ewww. Flower Power All you need is a jam jar (or something with a lid), flower petals and any other scented (non-dog-poo) outdoor offerings, a little water and a mixing stick. Hey presto, you have a bespoke smelly perfume, potion or concoction! Your child can even make their own label to stick on. Pimp Up Your Walk If going out for another walk has your child digging their heels in, try giving it a new twist. Prepare a piece of paper with a circle, triangle, rectangle and square drawn down one side and track objects that are these shapes along the way eg fence posts, road signs, wheels, swings etc. You can do a similar thing with textures, for example, rough, smooth, tickly, silky etc. Fruit Picking A trip to a Pick Your Own will keep their bellies occupied and give you plenty of healthy goodies to take

home for fruity treats (see 12), and all for next to nothing on the spending front. The Woodland Trust Check out: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk for loads of free, downloadable activity sheets that you can use any time you are outside. National Trust This may not immediately spring to mind for this young age group but there are plenty of very child-friendly gardens and outdoor spaces that are perfect for little ones to enjoy running around. Look up: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ lists/our-top-gardens-for-children Keeping Cool Water pistol targets: Fill up the pistols, line up some empty cans or paper cups and fire away. For added fun, keep a score card. Beach Life Have buckets and spades at the ready and head beach-side for rockpooling and castle building. Inland lakes and urban areas often have man-made “beach” areas and activities going on over the summer, so check your local websites for information.

Sprinklers Failing the beach and assuming it’s not dry enough for a hose-pipe ban, water sprinkler action can’t fail to cool off the steamiest of tempers and meltdowns. Bath If it’s Just. Too. Hot. retreat inside to the relative cool of the bathroom, run a tepid bath and pile your young ones in.

Rainy Days at Home

Kitchen Chaos Keep little hands busy and titillate taste buds by making fruit kebabs, juicy lollies and berry crumbles. If your children like rainbows, they can design their very own fruit rainbow on a plate for pudding. Washing Up Get an enthusiastic toddler together with a washing up brush and they can be (a little) more useful than you think. This activity can also keep them blissfully happy for ages! So as long as everything in the bowl is kid-friendly, let them wash away! Vegetable Paint Printing Give life to the stubby bits of veg lurking in the bottom of the fridge. Turn them into paint stamps before dumping them in the bin, compost or food waste.

Indoor Dens and Picnics Who said you have to be outside to build a den or have a picnic? Any combination of chairs, bed, tables, sofa, indoor clothes dryer plus an old sheet or blanket, the perfect hidey hole for all manner of adventures. Ring your friends If you are feeling stuck at home and all at sea, the chances are there will be a friend nearby in exactly the same position. Never hesitate to pick up the phone and join forces. They will be as glad as you that you did.

Deal Hunting

Your Local Council Once you’ve exhausted the options in the What’s On section of this magazine, look at your local council website to find out about free or discounted holiday sessions at local leisure centres, libraries, theatres and other venues. Kids Eat Free

Lots of restaurants help families

out in the holidays and drum up

their own business, so it is always worth having a shop around for good deals.

Culture Kids

Plenty of museums are free to enter, or at least offer good

holiday discounts and have lots of

interactive entertainment to keep

little brains engaged. Failing that,

at least they are a cool on a warm day and dry if it’s raining!
