School-menu app is a success! Earlier this year, City Catering Southampton launched a brand new school menu app: Lunchero. The app has already been downloaded by hundreds of families across Southampton, giving parents and pupils a user-friendly way to view the full term’s menu for their individual school, day by day. “Feedback from users is fantastic,” said Rachel Hall, Deputy CEO. “This is the first app we’ve developed as a company, and we’re delighted at the uptake, with thousands of screen views since launch. “Families with picky eaters are finding the app particularly useful,” continues Rachel. “This comment sums it up: ‘Love the new food app, it has really helped with my children’s meal choices at school. My son is a fussy eater, being able to sit with him and quickly look at a visual of the next day’s meals has helped him so much in making his own choices for dinner.’” The latest Lunchero release now shows school holidays and INSET days, to help parents plan ahead. Discussions are also underway about a secondaryschool menu app, potentially incorporating a nutrition-based game to inform good food choices. Maths Club by Post There is a new way to help your child with Maths. Gemma from Southampton talks about her first experiences of ‘Maths Club by Post’ – ‘When the boys got their Maths pack they were like “Mummy! We’ve got post!” Very excited when they opened it. Joshy started doing it straight away. Olly is not very confident at Maths and was so excited when he got it right! They loved it!
Rebecca’s Holiday club is based at Scantabout Primary School in Chandlers Ford runs various fun workshops for children ages 4 - 11 years. The clubs runs for the first full three weeks of the summer holiday’s, October, February and May half terms and one week at Easter. Staff are Level 3 qualified or in the process of qualifying. Choosing the right school shoes By Caroline French, W J French and Sons Children spend the majority of the day at school and in school shoes and whilst it may seem expensive investing in a fitted pair, it is really important for your child’s foot health. A child’s foot has not fully developed until they are 18 years old and badly fitting shoes can cause foot problems in later life.
New multi-million pound theatre development boosts creative arts at KES King Edward VI School, Southampton is proud of its vibrant and exciting Creative Arts Faculty. Large numbers of students perform and participate in a range of musical, dramatic and artistic activities to an exceptionally high standard culminating in a biennial Arts Festival. Music is a very popular subject with many pupils taking GCSE and A Level, achieving outstanding grades. If your child is hard on their shoes, choose thicker soles and one with a toe bumper. Try on a variety of brands to see which suits your child’s foot the best. Different brands can have a noticeable effect on how your child walks. Also try and choose a rounder shaped toe that does not taper off too quickly, to allow for ultimate growing room. You should have leather or breathable textile linings to help keep feet dry. Children’s feet sweat a lot. A bad fit can negate all the benefits of a good shoe. As each style can fit differently (like clothes), an accurate fit and correct support can only be certain when the foot is in the shoe and checked by an experienced fitter. How Long Should a School Shoe Last? We all wear shoes very differently. School shoes no matter how well constructed were never designed to be the brake for the bike or scooter or replace football boots. Whilst we all would like to see a pair of school shoes last a year in reality this is not the case. Even if the shoe remains in good condition, it is highly unlikely that a child’s foot will stay the same size and depth for a whole year. Top tip - Don’t leave the shoe shopping till the last minute! You will get a better choice of styles and sizes and avoid the queues if you come in early in the summer. If your child is over the age of 5 it is unlikely that they will grow in the last few weeks before school starts. Colourful, characterful works by the muchloved children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler will be on display at Mottisfont, over the summer holidays from 15 July – 3 September. Connecting families with the countryside this summer Owlets club is to provide time and space once a month for parents to step back from their busy lives, to reflect and interact with the world at nature’s pace, bringing together a fun, friendly, caring group of parents who enjoy the activities and the social aspect as much as their children. Fruity sticks
Great for a lunchbox treat, these colourful snacks will soon disappear!
Healthy Banana Granola Bars
These tasty bars are full of protein thanks to the hidden gems; quinoa and chia seeds.
You will need 120g oats 2 mashed bananas 60g quinoa Âź tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp chia seeds
½ tsp vanilla extract 30g chopped almonds 30g chopped pecans 40g dried cranberries 50g butter or margarine 2 tbsp honey
Children who are un der four should not be offered who le grapes because of the danger of choking.
You will need 3 Thin plastic straws Mixture of fruit such as grapes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, pineapple, banana, apple Lemon or lime juice How to make: 1. Cut the larger fruit into squares and squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them to prevent them from going brown 2. Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time - make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special.

Heat the oven to 350F degrees / 180C / Gas 4. Grease and line a baking tray roughly 20cm square. Mix together the quinoa, chia seeds, salt and cinnamon with the oats in a large bowl. Add the mashed banana and vanilla and then the nuts and dried fruit. In a small saucepan, melt the butter or margarine over a low heat and add the honey. When melted, fold in to the granola mixture. Pour into the pan and press it down until it is level. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cut into fingers while still warm and leave to cool completely.

Snowy Strawberries
This one is super easy and great to get the kids helping in the kitchen. Ideal for summer snacks, they can be kept in the freezer and brought out after a hot day at school.
How to make: 1. Wash the strawberries and trim the stalks and leaves off each one. 2. Put some of the Greek yoghurt in a bowl and roll each strawberry in the yoghurt. Lay them on a flat baking tray. 3. When you have covered all the fruit with the yoghurt, place the tray in the freezer on an empty shelf and leave to freeze overnight.You can then take them off the tray and store them in freezer bags until needed.

Usually filled with tofu, herbs and noodles, they are a great snack and if you can find the rice paper wrappers in a local oriental food supplier, you can not only make those but also these amazing fruity rolls, perfect for lunch boxes.

Take the fruit you are going to use, wash and peel if necessary, then cut into very small, cubes. Drizzle with lime juice over the fruit to prevent browning and stir well to combine the fruits together. Add a few small or torn mint leaves if your child likes them. Place a small pile of the fruit at the centre of a rice paper wrapper. Roll one side in, then the two ends and finally roll it up. Lay it on the open side to stop it falling open.
