Classical music concerts for tots

Low take-up of free childcare

Remember the days before you had little ones (a bit hazy, I know), when you would skip out of the house and soak up the many cultural delights that Birmingham had to offer? For many parents of young children, cultured nights out are rare and finding suitable childcare can be stressful. Acclaimed concert series Bach to Baby warmly welcomes parents with young children to live classical concerts featuring artists from the UK’s top orchestras in inspiring locations. So, you see, culture doesn’t have to stop when you start a family after all! CONCERT DATES: Holy Trinity Parish Church, Sutton Coldfield, B72 1TF Friday 10 May; Saturdays 22 June, 27 July and 24 August: 11am Solihull Methodist Church, B91 1LG Saturdays 18 May, 15 June, 20 July and 10 August: 11am Friends Meeting House, Bournville, B30 1JT Wednesdays 29 May and 21 August: 11am

Government figures show that far fewer families than expected are using the tax-free childcare offer. According to figures released by HMRC, just 91,000 parents accessed the offer by December 2018, far below the 415,000 the government had budgeted for. This number represents under 5% of the 2 million families the government estimated would be eligible for the scheme when it was first launched. The tax-free childcare scheme is a replacement for the previous childcare voucher system, which closed to new entrants from October 2018. Ongoing technical difficulties, the complexity of the system and low awareness have been attributed as causes for the poor response by families. The government has said it is running a national communications campaign to raise awareness and encourage more parents to apply.

2 Steps to 11+ Success with KSOL Is your child due to sit their 11+ entrance exam this September? Family life can be incredibly busy. With various family/educational commitments, KSOL understands how extra study often presents a challenge. Ensure your child is prepared! KSOL’s expert 11plus tutors have a personalised 3 month course to help. Families benefit from: • Direct support from a dedicated KSOL tutor

Walk to school week 2019 Thousands of children across the UK will celebrate the benefits of walking during national Walk to School Week from 20 to 24 May.

• Daily personalised tests (Mon-Fri) • Highlights weaker areas – providing immediate focus Call 0121 733 6558 or visit www.ksol.co.uk to find out about KSOL’s exclusive “2 Steps to Success” offer, including the 3 month 11plus revision course + one 11plus mock exam: Only £244 + course set-up fee, saving you £20!

Families will be encouraged to walk to school for the whole week to see the big differences that come from small steps: from healthier and happier children, to fewer cars outside the school gates. Walking to school is an easy way for children to fit more activity into their day whilst also helping them to develop vital road safety skills. As awareness grows of the dangers of air pollution on our health, walking to school is a positive action people can take to help clean up our air. Special Walk to School Week classroom packs are available for school pupils containing wallcharts, stickers, diaries and fun walking journey activities. www.livingstreets.org.uk/wtsw

Learning life-saving skills to become compulsory Beginning in 2020, all state schools in England will be required to teach “life-saving skills” under new plans for health education announced by the Government. According to draft guidelines released by the Department of Education, primary school children are set to learn basic first aid, as well as steps they can take to protect and support the health and wellbeing of others, including calling emergency services. Children age 5 years will learn basic first aid and children as young as 11 years will be shown CPR at school. "Learning the basic skills of first aid and techniques like CPR will give young people the confidence to know that they can step in to help someone else in need and in the most extreme cases - it could potentially save a life” announced Education Secretary, Damian Hinds. www.gov.uk/government/news

How to encourage a love of music in your child By Jon Flinn Listen to stories of the successful young musicians of today, such as Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Adrianna ForbesDorant, and they will tell you that they got involved with classical music, in large part, because they were exposed to it from an early age. So how do you as parents or parents-to-be nurture your child’s relationship with music? Parental support for your child’s musical development is underpinned by two simple but vital principles: positive

relationships and enabling environments. Creating enabling environments is about making sure that your child – whatever age – has access to appropriate stimulating resources. There are dozens of great tips on the website www.earlyeducation.org.uk – everything from copying children’s vocalisations to show that you hear and value them to using recording devices and creating ‘treasure baskets’ with items that the youngest babies can shake, scrunch or tap. Bach to Baby concerts and Groovy Little Movers classes

provide great opportunities to expose young children to music. As children get older organisations like ABRSM, The Strings Club and Kimichi School support children in developing their musical skills, but nothing is more important to a child’s musical development than parental support.

How extra-curricular activities boost learning Taking part in extracurricular activities after school can have a positive impact on children academically and socially. Claire Winter explores how. Learning something outside of the classroom can give children a sense of wonder about the world, and more time to explore their wider interests. Extra-curricular activities are also useful for broadening their academic and social lives. Fiona Todd, Executive Head teacher from The Rural Church Schools Academy Trust (www.rcsat.cheshire.sch.uk) explains that with a much narrower curriculum than in years gone by, children need to do extra-curricular activities to experience a wide range of disciplines and to develop socially. “Pupils who focus entirely on their studies do so often at the expense of their development as social beings. Rather than distracting pupils from their learning, extracurricular activities complement study and help to develop key skills that will support them in their future.” Lots of studies have shown that extra-curricular activities can boost academic performance in children. They

also have better organisational and time management skills because they have to balance their hobbies and school work. Being part of a team or an after-school activity can also be a great boost to their selfesteem. Teamwork and being part of a group, like a Brownie pack, also helps children understand about loyalty and showing up for other people. Stepping away from the curriculum also means your child will enjoy their academic work more because they have had a break and can look at it with fresh eyes. Joel Sadler, engineer and founder of Piper (www.playpiper.com), the award-winning STEM DIY Computer Kit, is passionate about giving kids time to explore and make things. “Think back to your early childhood and visualise the learning moments you cherished most. Do you see a dusty chalkboard with math equations? Or do you see that thing you did or built that made you feel proud? Joel says what he learned outside of school shaped what he did as an adult. “I don’t remember the equations - but I do remember being creative with my hands with LEGO blocks, making mischief with DIY potato canons, and trying

to hack bootleg floppy disk video games to run on my family DOS computer.” He points out: “History also highlights extra-curricular activities as a secret sauce to unlocking creativity successful innovators all have stories about key learning moments as kids that got them on a path of creating technology. Those epiphanies typically happen far away from the classroom. A young Bill Gates was busy taking apart his family piano (and not putting it back together), teenage Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak hacked DIY electronic kits together to prank their friends and make free phone calls. The seeds of learning and innovation may be planted in the classroom - but they grow and blossom in your free time.” Extra-curricular activities also equip children with skills they need later in life. Doing something like leading a scout group or learning first aid to help others encourages responsibility and shows children how to look after others. External clubs and classes also provide important social opportunities. Making friends outside of school means exposure to new and different people and the opportunity to learn about different individuals, cultures and lives.

THE rules for becoming a happy, healthy pre-teen By Dr Andy Cope If you’ve got a child between 6 and 12, save these rules and read them as a bedtime story – over and over again!

RULE 4

Explain that the rules are not to be questioned: they’re like gravity. You don’t need to understand them. They just work.

RULE 5

RULE 1 You will receive a body and a colour They’re yours for life, so accept them. Look after your body by eating good food (most of the time) and sleeping well (always). Exercise every day. It’s the only body you’ll ever have. Revel in whatever colour you are. Unless you’re green in which case, wrong planet dude!

Be kind Always. It’s a happiness superpower and it’s free. Be a good friend. To yourself. Here’s a new word for you: ‘sonder’– it means that everyone [and I mean EVERYONE] has the same insecure thoughts as you do. Everyone [and I mean EVERYONE] is riddled with self-doubt. Everyone [and I mean EVERYONE] has a nagging inner voice that keeps telling them they’re a bit of an idiot. Notice the inner critic and start to challenge it.

RULE 6

RULE 2

Praise yourself

Love is all around

Notice when things go well. Recognise when you’ve achieved something positive. Pat yourself on the back.

The world is full of lovely people but there are a few ‘haters’, who make a lot of noise. Social media makes it easier than ever to spread bad stuff. If someone says something nasty take a step back and think it through. Yes, it’ll hurt. But is it really that bad? Being hated by a hater? It’s what they do. They do it to loads of people. They do it because, deep down, they actually hate themselves. Rise above it. Stay nice. Yes, even to the haters. It’s hard but they actually need to be loved!

RULE 3 You are made of actual magic You possess what’s called ‘ordinary magic.’ It’s your in-built ability to be superresilient. Ordinary magic isn’t about forcing yourself to be positive or pretending the negative isn’t there. It’s about allowing yourself to be upset, and bouncing back stronger. We all possess this magic, otherwise known as ‘time.’ Time magically changes things. Eventually.

RULE 7 Listen to the right people Criticism and harsh words can really sting. And there are plenty of people who stand on the edges of life, throwing negativity around. When it happens to you (which it will), rise above it. The trick is to ignore the criticism, unless it’s delivered by someone you truly respect and care for. And who cares for you too. In which case the criticism will be well intended.

RULE 8 Life is a rollercoaster There are highs and lows. When you’re up, your friends know who you are. When you’re down, you know who your friends are. That’s how it works. Just because one person doesn’t seem to care for you, doesn’t mean you should forget about everyone else who does.

My research has uncovered an amazing statistic, something the media fails to report. The biggest killer in the UK, bigger than road accidents, cancer, heart attacks, falling off ladders and tripping over squirrels is ‘Not breathing’. It’s literally the biggest cause of death across the world. It’s a scandal. So breathe. And keep breathing. It’s quite important. My advice: Spend 3 minutes breathing well, 5 times a day.

works, but it’s embarrassing if your mum comes in). Close your eyes. It’s quick and easy, just three good, long breaths. Big slow breath in. First, breathe out while you consider how you feel right now. Big slow breath in again. Second out-breath is gratitude, what have you got to be grateful for right now? Big slow breath in again. And your 3rd breath out is how do you want to feel? Consider and choose an attitude that will work for you going forward. BOOM! You’re back in the game.

RULE 10 You will forget all these rules at birth This last rule is a real pain! You literally forget that love is all around. You actually forget how to breathe properly. Luckily, you have a fabulous family. If someone has taken time to cut out these rules and read them to you, they love you. LOADS! Dr Andy Cope is a positive psychologist and bestselling author. How to help your child make friends... Linda Blair’s top tips for parents 55% of parents say they are anxious about making new adult friends and it’s therefore not surprising that some children are also not sure how to go about this. It’s useful to help them understand that the easiest way to make a friend is to BE a friend. Psychologist Linda Blair has some useful tips for children and parents.

borrow a book. Stress that it’s important not to be negative about the game or try to change it and if the others don’t want them to join in right then, to try again another day.

LINDA BLAIR’S TIPS FOR PARENTS ARE: Do as I do

If you think another child isn’t sure about whether to join in with what you’re doing, invite them to do just that. Everyone likes to feel included.

During the early years, parents are their child’s best role models. Try to show your children how to make friends by setting a good example - giving the people around you your full attention and listening fully whenever your child, your partner or other key people around you want to tell you something. Show you’re concerned about how other people are feeling and thank others when they do things you appreciate.

Sharing is caring

Read stories about sharing and making friends

When you’re with your friends, offer to share your toys, so you can all play together.

Talk about them afterwards. Start reading these stories as early as possible, even before you think your child can understand them! Whenever you see an opportunity, ask your child how a character could be feeling - and ask how they know.

TIPS FOR CHILDREN Offer to help

Taking turns Make sure everyone you’re with gets to have a turn at whatever you’re all doing. They’ll know that you are a kind person.

Let’s pretend Knowing how other people are feeling will help you understand what makes them tick. If your school has a drama club, join it, and ask to be in the school play too, so you can learn how different characters feel and behave. At home, ask your family to play ‘let’s pretend’ games with you.

Make a head start Before your child starts a new school year, ďŹ nd out if you can who else will be in their class. Then invite one of those children over to play with your child during the summer holidays. That way, once school starts, your child already has a friend from the start of term. This in turn will reduce their anxiety when they go into class on that ďŹ rst day. www.lindablair.co.uk

As a parent, you can help your child to make new friends. FamiliesÂŽ Magazine suggests:

Starting a conversation Some children may want a parent’s help to start a conversation. Working with your child to think of a few things they can say like “I like your lunch box’ or “What games do you like? can help your child feel more comfortable about starting to talk to a potential new friend.

Joining in Encourage your child to watch what other children are playing and think about what they can do to ďŹ t in. Suggest they try joining the game by doing something that’s relevant to it. E.g. if children are playing at running a library, volunteer to be somebody who wants to

Norfolk House School inspires pupils to get active As part of the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Norfolk House School was thrilled to welcome BUCS Silver Medallist, Amy Hillyard through the charity Inspired Through Sport. The children enjoyed hearing all about Amy’s sporting journey, allowing them to understand the hard work and dedication needed in order to achieve their goals. Amy prepared some training and exercises, encouraging pupils of all sporting abilities to challenge themselves and to keep going! Why is sport so important? Norfolk House School believes in educating the whole child. A healthy diet and an active lifestyle will bring good results in the children’s lifestyle, minds and bodies. When children are physically fit, they will achieve more academically. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to complement the excellent teaching that is happening in the classroom every day. The children can choose between tag rugby, netball, football, gymnastics and cricket. Alternatively, they can exercise their brains with Chess, Mad Science, Coding, Construction or First Aid Clubs.

The future is bright... Kimichi School is undergoing exciting new developments and expansions. They have recently added a sixth form as well as continuing to provide a unique space for learners who need to take GCSE exams at their own pace. Indeed, it is becoming increasingly clear that a disproportionate level of pressure is placed on young people to take these exams as early as possible which can be detrimental to their overall mental health and development. By prioritising the needs of the individual Kimichi School creates an environment to allow their students to flourish and drive towards becoming the best version of themselves. As Kimichi School enters its sixth year this September the staff look forward to ushering in many initiatives in their inimitable and awardwinning way. Why not go along and find out more? Break time is important for learning School break times can contribute just as greatly as formal lessons to the quality of pupils’ education, according to experts. A typical break pattern for both primary and secondary schools is 15 minutes in the morning, followed by a lunch break of up to 60 minutes.

Climate change education programme coming to the UK Teachers across the country have the opportunity to become the first climate change teachers accredited by the UN. This one of a kind climate change education programme will use innovative learning technology so teachers can learn at home or on the go. The aim is to make sure teachers can help protect the climate by educating their students with the latest data and information on climate change, sustainability, and the green economy. Education provider YPO sponsors this FREE, global education programme. All you have to do is sign up to Harwood Education’s UN CC: Learn Teacher Academy.

However, a recent report on education systems across the world from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) highlighted many countries where longer breaks are the norm and suggests that breaks in formal instruction play a vital role in allowing pupils to play, rest and interact with their peers.

The course, which takes just 8 hours to complete explores the science that supports the existence and effects of Climate Change on children, cities, human health, and gender.

The benefits are not just a refreshed pupil, but the results of play in further developing cognitive, emotional and social skills allows these attributes to be used in the classroom to improve learning.

Demystifying phonics By Andrew Campbell

Parents play a very important role in helping children learn to read. But teaching methods have changed since most parents were at school and if you want to assist your children, it’s important to understand how they are taught. What is phonics? Phonics is used in all schools in the UK as the main first method for children to learn to read and write. It is all about sounds. There are 44 sounds in English, which are put together to form words. These small units of sound are called ‘phonemes.’ Some sounds are represented by one letter, like ‘t’, and some by two or more, like ‘ck’ in truck and ‘air’ in chair. The letter, or the combination of letters are called ‘graphemes.’ Children are taught the sounds first, then how to match them to letter(s), and finally how to use the letter(s) and sounds to read and spell.

How is phonics taught? The most widely used approach in UK schools is called ‘synthetic phonics’ in which the phonemes (sounds) associated with particular graphemes (letter or letters) are pronounced in isolation and blended together (synthesised). The 44 phonemes, and the way they are written down, are taught individually.

The first sounds to be taught are usually s, a, t, p, i, n. This is because once children know each of those letter sounds, they can then be arranged into a variety of different words (eg: sat, tip, pin, nip, tan, tin, sip). In a phonics lesson, a teacher will introduce a new sound and its letter or letters, spelling them out. Then, they will use the sound in a word, clearly pronouncing the sound. Pupils will practise repeating this sound back to the teacher; the children may also do an action to help them remember. The teacher will also show pupils how to ‘blend’ or sound out words, using the new sound. For example, the word 'lock' when spoken has three sounds. Children are taught to say the sounds separately then blend them together: 'l-o-ck', 'lock.' Once children are aware of the sounds of English and how spoken words are built from these sounds, they can learn the ways each sound is usually written, as a letter, or group of letters. They can then apply this knowledge to help break down written words and read them one sound at a time. Then blend these sounds together into the full spoken word.

How can you help?

11+ VERBAL REASONING VOCABULARY FLASH CARDS Expand your child’s antonym and synonym knowledge and achieve a higher 11+ score A comprehensive vocabulary resource with child-friendly definitions and a list of synonyms www.vocabularyflashcards.co.uk 16 Families Birmingham, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield

sounds to the letters. Say a word and ask your child to break it down into its individual sounds. For example big, b i g. When reading to your child, practise by encouraging them to point to each letter and say the sound out loud. Then your child can read these words by blending the separate sounds together.

What makes phonics tricky? The English language is a bit more complicated than most languages. Having been invaded so many times throughout its history, it is a rich mixture of languages. For instance the word ‘fern’ comes from the Anglo-Saxons and the first sound is spelt ‘f’. Whereas the word ‘phone’ comes from Greek and the same sound is spelt ‘ph’. Tricky words need to be learnt by sight, rather than sound.

Helpful resources There are a large number of apps available including Jolly Phonics and Teach Your Monster to Read. The BBC Skillwise Phonics Tool allows you to hear sounds of English in five different accents and discover the correspondence between sounds and letters.

Sounding out words is at the heart of phonics and helping your child with this at home is simple. Try introducing sounds one at a time. Phoneme cards are useful (downloadable, printable resources can be found at www.phonicsplay.co.uk). Show a letter card to your child and say the sound. Ask your child to say it as well. This will help build a link between the letter and its sound. You can go on to help your child blend the sounds by saying each of the sounds in the word and then pushing them together to say the word. Using the sounds to write is achieved by helping your child to work out the individual sounds in a word and matching these

School Holiday Camps

@familiesbirm

The benefits of school holiday camps and workshops By Andrew Campbell Here are some of the many benefits of enrolling your child into a school holiday camp: Physical activity Much of a child’s time at school is spent sitting behind a desk so spending the day running around, swimming, dancing, or playing sport gives children a great chance to get moving. Develop talents and skills At some camps, children may be given the opportunity to learn skills and take part in activities they may have not encountered before. Learning archery, performing arts or lacrosse may help children discover talents and interests they didn’t know they had. Building confidence Discovering these new talents and developing new skills will, in turn, help children to grow in confidence and selfesteem.

Learning social skills

Offering role models

Engaging with children from different schools, different areas and ultimately different backgrounds, is a great way to build social skills and to make new friends.

Often the instructors on summer camps provide a rare opportunity for a child to interact with an adult who is not part of the family unit or teacher. Their leader should be trained to care for them, offer them support and advice when needed, and always be there for them throughout their attendance.

Developing independence Sometimes giving children the freedom to make decisions and plan their own time is a fantastic way for them to learn to be independent. Leaving technology behind As fantastic as it is that we live in a world filled with TVs, mobile phones, lap tops and other devices, it is always great to encourage children to get outside for a good old-fashioned kick about and run around. Enjoying the outdoors Climbing trees, changing a bike wheel, or building an outdoor camp can help ensure your child does not miss out on the learning benefits to be gained from the great outdoors and enjoy adventures they would not otherwise experience.
