Showkids Musical Theatre classes in Cathcart have an ace up their sleeve. Principal and founder Miriam Elwell-Sutton discovered her love of musical theatre as a child in Glasgow and perfected it on stage in London’s West End in shows such as Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You and Chicago. “Having worked in the industry for years I almost always know someone in a touring show and so have been able to organise for someone in the cast to come and teach the kids a bit of the show regularly.” As well as singing, dance and drama classes for primary aged children through the school terms, Miriam organises a Summer School. This year it runs from 30th July - 3rd August and is based on the Lion King. The charity, staffed by volunteers, has offered bereavement support to people throughout Scotland since 1959.” Modern Studies teacher and leader of the initiative within the school, Miss Clare Cully, said “I am delighted that £3000 was granted to Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland. The judges and audience were extremely impressed with the creative and emotional presentation from the winning team. We are very proud of the hard work and enthusiasm they – and all the pupils involved – displayed throughout the process.” The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative is an international programme that has positively engaged over 135,000 secondary school students across Scotland and awarded over £2 million pounds to small, local, social service charities.
Pupils win £3000 for bereavement charity
Voices in the Middle
S3 pupils at Morrison’s Academy were awarded the cheque from the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative as part of the school’s Civics programme. Participating in the scheme for the first time this year, the pupils were challenged to create a persuasive presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle an issue they are passionate about. Working in teams, each group researched local social issues to choose their charity and create an engaging case for the YPI funding. The winning group created a powerful and compelling case for bereavement counselling charity Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland. The charity, staffed by volunteers, has offered bereavement support to people throughout Scotland since 1959.
Sadly, 1 in 3 children in UK will see their parents split up before they reach their 16th birthday. Voices in the Middle is a charity that is raising awareness of the impact of divorce and separation on young people in the UK. This includes providing a place for young people to find help and ways to share their voice, without being put in the middle of any arguments. At the centre of this support, a new digital platform has been launched, www.voicesinthemiddle.com, a dedicated place where young people can find help and support, voice their views and share their experiences, read helpful content and connect with discussion boards, helplines and local services. It is a collaboration between young people, the family law and mediation sector and The Family Initiative charity.

Sharing and Interaction
The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, modelling language and behaviour which gives them strategies and words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future.
Respect for Behavioural Boundaries
At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: • Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention • Keeping hands/feet to themselves • Sharing and taking turns • Looking after things • Tidying away • Being kind to others You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others.
Preparing Your Child for School
I
f your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure! Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips.
Independence
The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources.
Communication and Language
Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence. Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings throughout the day and develop a positive ethos around the importance of communicating and expressing feelings, of any kind. This will have multiple benefits (including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future.
Physical (Gross and Fine Motor Skills)
All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting.
Exploring and Investigating
Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about how to do something. Make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative, imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/ toys). See what he or she does with it. In the latter stages of his or her ‘creation’ you may wish to step in to play too, but allow your child to initiate the direction of the play and conversation. All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. Enjoy and treasure these precious last few weeks with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life. Fun Things To Do This Summer! 1. Set some goals
Talk about new things you’d like to learn, then discuss how to break it down into achievable steps and set a realistic goal. It could be anything, from juggling, roller skating, cooking or plaiting hair. Get the kids to write their “summer bucket list”, which they can create a scrapbook for, or document on a computer or tablet. Get them to research where the places they want to go are and the cost of visiting. Give them extra credit for finding free activities or keeping the trip within a certain budget.
2. Explore your town
Go for a walk in your local neighbourhood and walk down streets that you have not been down before. Your child can take a packed lunch and you can make it into a real adventure. For younger children, prepare a piece of paper with a circle, triangle, rectangle and square drawn down one side and track objects that are these shapes along the way, e.g. fence posts, road signs, wheels, swings etc. You can do a similar thing with textures, for example, rough, smooth, tickly, silky and so on. For older children print off a map and ask your child to lead you to a certain destination.
3. Get creative
5. Bug Hunt
A child’s fascination with bugs can be an adventure. Give them a pot and a little shovel and set them to work exploring under pots, logs, loose soil and leaves. Just remember to set the new-found friends free at the end.
6. Water Pistol Targets
Fill up some water pistols, line up some empty cans or paper cups and fire away. For added fun, keep a score card.
7. Washing Up
Get an enthusiastic toddler together with a washing up brush and they can be (a little) more useful than you think. This activity can also keep them blissfully happy for ages! As as long as everything in the bowl is kid-friendly, let them wash away!
8. Make an indoor den
Any combination of chairs, bed, tables, sofa, indoor clothes dryer plus an old sheet or blanket, the perfect hidey hole for all manner of adventures.
9. Your Local Council
Order some clay and try making a vase
4. Make a Buck
Head to your nearest car boot sale and sell some old toys.

10. Culture Kids
Plenty of museums are free to enter and have lots of interactive entertainment to keep little brains engaged. Failing that, at least they are a cool on a warm day and dry if it’s raining!
11. Sporting Events
Glasgow (together with Berlin) is hosting the inaugural European Championships (www.glasgow2018.com/championships) this August, an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports including the existing European Championships for Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon. There are sure to be some opportunities to get outside and watch some of these things on the big screen around the city or enjoy a home-based family viewing opportunity.
12. Take Older Kids on a Road Trip
Head to the Scottish border and visit Hadrian’s Wall. Built by the Romans in 122AD to keep the Scots out after they invaded Britain, this amazing stone wall once stretched nearly 80 miles from coast to coast. It’s now part of a 150-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the UK’s most spectacular Roman monuments. 13. Make a Play in a Day
Dig out the dressing up and create a play or a Britain’s Got Talentstyle show.
14. Have a Kitchen Disco
Get the children to choose a playlist on Spotify, or from your music collection and have a kitchen dance-off. You could also get glow sticks and neon face paint and turn it into a glow party.
15. Create a Smoothie
Buy some yummy fresh fruit and get your children to design fruit smoothies. They could come up with a name for their new concoctions and design some packaging for them too.

16. Take a Class
Summer holiday workshops and camps can teach your children some new skills, which will also help their brains stay active. Circus skills, kayaking, and coding are all interesting options. Why not try Showkids’ Lion King themed summer school 30-7-3/8 in Cathcart (www.showkidsglasgow.com) or introductory Kayak lessons at Pinkston, which are the ideal way to find out if it's something you'd like to try more of (www.pinkston.co.uk).
17. Explore Books
Being told what to read at school can make it less enjoyable, so let them choose what they want to read. You can also sign up your children for the Summer Reading challenge at the local library. This year’s theme is Mischief Makers, inspired by the classic comic, The Beano. Visit the interactive space at The National Library of Scotland at Kelvin Hall to explore films, maps, books and manuscripts in digital format. Visitors will also have access to 100 years of Scottish life on film and video from the Moving Image Archive. There is always something to enjoy at the award-winning space with regular free events and talks.

18. Climb a hill
This can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are. (We are spoilt for choice in beautiful Scotland www.walkhighlands.co.uk). A popular starter hill is Connick Hill at Balmaha, a short, steep 4km walk taking about 3hrs. Enjoy helping one another to make the climb: your reward is the view from the top, and the picnic lunch you have up there!
19. Visit the dinosaurs
The Glasgow Fort has giant animatronic dinosaurs on display all summer, as well as dinosaur themed activities on every day between 12 and 4pm. Your little dino lovers will be thrilled!
20. Start a collection
Your collection can be anything – football cards, postcards, photographs or fun things you’ve been up to, perhaps pebbles from beaches you’ve been to. You can collect experiences as well as items: keep a book where you short review every film you watch, every book you read, or a description of every day you have. Collections aren’t about what they are, they’re about learning to organise your thoughts in a coherent and logical way.
21. Take public transport
You may be inured to the ways of the daily commute, but children love buses and trains. Kids under 5 travel free on the subway, and under 16s pay just £1.45 for an all-day ticket!
22. Sleep outdoors
Nothing says Summer like the chance to kip outside. If you can, find a campsite where you can go for a few days, but if you can’t do that just put up a tent in the back garden. No tent? Just borrow one. You’ll be amazed at the amount of fun kids can have with a few torches under canvas. Make sure they have lots of snacks – and don’t forget the singsongs!
23. Put your feet up
Drop your kids off for a couple of hours at The Language Hub in Partick while you go for a well-earned break at one of the many fab coffee shops which have sprouted up in the area over the last couple of year. Between the 09.07.-10.08.18 The Hub will be running morning and afternoon sessions for adults and children to enjoy, and not just language learning related. 24. Try Geocaching
It’s like a big treasure hunt. Use the GPS on your phone to locate caches. The idea is to take something with you to put in the geochache as your contribution. In return, you get to keep what was left in the geocache by the last person when you find it. It’s a great way to get the family out for a walk.
25. Visit the Zoo
Edinburgh Zoo is packed with a variety of fun and un-Zoo-usual things for you to do this summer. Home to over 1,000 rare and endangered animals from the smallest dwarf chameleon, to the beautiful Sumatran tiger enclosure, there is so much to discover and explore. Why not visit some of the animal walkthroughs bringing you closer than ever before to monkey’s, lemurs, wallaby’s and pelicans. Attend a range of talks from the expert keepers of Edinburgh Zoo, learning fun and interesting facts about the Zoo inhabitants, take part in animal handling sessions and watch on at the world famous penguin parade. Visit the UK’s only giant pandas, koalas and Sir Nils, the world’s only knighted penguin. Or why not see if you can spot the new arrivals? Bring your little ones to see ours such as the Kangaroo Joey, rare rock hopper chicks or adorable Binturong kits! Coping with a ‘Tweenager’

ou’re at home, and suddenly your child starts eye-rolling, and saying ‘so what.’ You’ve guessed it….you’re child is becoming a ‘tweenager.’ As it will probably feel like just 5 minutes since they started school, this can come as a shock. The truth is though that children are becoming teenagers at younger and younger ages - as young as age 10 for some girls with the onset of early adolescence. So what do you need to know about your child’s impending entry into teenagehood? I think the best advice I have been given about raising a teen is that your role is to give them the skills they need to become a successful adult. You are not there to save them from failure or be their best friend.
Understanding your teen
Remember you teenager’s body is changing rapidly, as hormones shift and surge; the brain and emotions are on a permanent rollercoaster. Boys have to manage large surges of testosterone and girls have to cope with the mood swings that arrive along with oestrogen. At the same time, they are figuring out how to make decisions independently and how they want to live in the world. According to Edward Anthony, a mental health educator from Mental Well Being in Schools (www.mentalwellbeinginschools. org) the biggest problem teenagers face is misunderstanding the meaning of mental health. “They need to be able to access resilience, happiness, contentment, high performance, and peace of mind. When these qualities are in a teenager’s life, any other problems they face - anxiety, peer pressure, bullying, academic stress, social media pressures - are easier to navigate.” Parenting expert Judy Bartkowiak from NLP Kids (www.nlpkids. com) jokingly says the biggest problem young people face,“is often their parents!” Seriously though, it’s much easier for children to take responsibility for packing the right books in their bags, getting to where they need to be and doing their homework on time when parents gradually hand over the responsibility for this during primary school. By doing everything for them, running into school with forgotten items and supervising homework, they effectively tell their kids ‘you need me, without me you’d be useless.’ Parents need to teach children how to look after themselves and become more resilient.”

How Can Parents Help their Teens?
Edward and his team at Wellbeing in Schools are changing young people’s understanding of the impact of their thoughts. They remind them that thoughts are passing energy and that when their thinking is settled, they will be happier. “Mental illness is the result of chronic mental stress. Humans experience chronic mental stress when they actively engage their ability to think. Generally speaking, when we actively use our ability to think to manage the tasks in our day, manage our feelings and behaviour, analyse who we are and our beliefs, ideas and expectations, we create chaos in our minds. A high level of thought creates a very low state of mind. In a low state of mind, it is impossible for a human being to be resilient, happy, innovative, loving or comfortable in their own skin.” Edward says we can help our tweenagers by learning how state of mind can impact a relationship. “When people are experiencing a kind, open, loving and non-judgemental feeling, they can connect easily to others. From that feeling, we make better decisions, enjoy relaxed and loving relationships, can have difficult conversations with a feeling of ease and openness, and we see more clearly that any kind of negativity or bad behaviour in another person is simply a product of a poor state of mind and bad feeling. This enables us to not take things personally and completely transforms parent/child relationships.”
Top Tip for Parents
Model the behaviour you want to see in your child. Judy says, “If you want them to moderate their screen time, limit yours. If you want them to listen, hear what they have to say. If you want them to eat well, buy healthy food and cook healthy meals. They can’t eat biscuits and crisps if you don’t buy them, the same goes for sugary drinks.” Judy also says to remember to believe in yourself. “You’ve done a great job bringing them up and getting them through primary school. Trust that this will stand them in good stead for secondary school. They’ll make mistakes, it’s how we learn, and we build self-esteem through getting that learning from the occasional failure. Be able to laugh about it, cuddle them and let them know you love them.” One of the psychological goals of the teen years is to become independent from adults and to develop your own personality and place in society. Letting go of your teen might be a bumpy ride but if you do it with love and a sense of humour, you should make it through.

Ned’s parents have split up, and split the house, ď€ƒď€‚ď€‚ because they can’t afford to rent another house for Ned’s dad. The walls are driving Ned crazy, but then he discovers he can “boggleâ€? through them, to the other side. All his eavesdropping means he finds out what other people are saying about him, and he doesn’t like what he hears. This was quite a hard book to read. Ned seems angry all the time, and he thinks he’s great. Because he is telling the story, I thought he was ok until I heard what other people had to say about him. It was a really interesting way to find out about a character, and I recommend this book to older readers who like stories about complicated people rather than complicated stories.
