Playhaven Out of School Care

Volunteers needed to support local families Home-Start Stirling supports local families who have at least one child under the age of five years who are experiencing stress or difficulties in their life. Volunteers help families by visiting on a weekly basis. That help may be in the form of a listening ear, advice on dealing with the children, or a bit of practical help.Volunteers don’t need to have any specialist skills or qualifications, just have some kind of parenting experience and a spare 2-3 hours a week. All new potential volunteers are asked to complete a training course and they will receive ongoing support and training. Howdy. Falkirk Operatic Society invites you to their 2017 production of Oklahoma! from the 18th to the 22nd April at Falkirk Town Hall. Little Pony Wishes Off the Page, May 4th-15th Stirling libraries ‘Off the Page’ book festival will be returning in May from 4th to 15th. This year there will be events with Chae Strathie, James Campbell, Ross Collins, and Alex Scarrow as well as a special Comics day at the Tolbooth. Little Pony Wishes is a new venture by Linn Rooney who is a mum of 5, has MS and has found a way to keep doing the things she has always loved and been passionate about in life. Linn owns little miniature American horses and in January set up her own business doing events and parties, dressing the horses up and pampering them giving people the chance to enjoy them too. The horses are very mobile, being so small they can go anywhere and Linn is able to offer lots of different event/party packages to suit the needs and budgets of her customers. Hippodrome Silent Film Festival This year’s Hippodrome Silent Film Festival runs from 22-26 March at the Hippodrome Cinema in Bo’ness. Parenting pet hates

I would have to admit the new craze of bottle flipping is really annoying!

We have recently moved from Stirling to Dunblane. The schools are brilliant and within walking distance. The revamped 3g football pitch at Dunblane High School is literally our new back garden, Callum is more on the field than at home, it is great to see it being so well utilised by the community! Dunblane is great for teenagers to meet up at one of the many small café’s or go for a cycle. Easy access into Bridge of Allan, Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh by train for concerts, cinema or shopping. Dunblane is a warm, welcoming and friendly place with a real village feel… a narrow, cobbled high street lined with good pubs to little gift boutiques, a beautiful cathedral, churches, museum and great parks!

North for a walk or cycle and explore new places! Every time, without fail, our picnic has ended up being a ‘car’ picnic because of the rain! We love the Lochs and beaches even though the sand is cold! Loch Katrine is one of our favourite and most beautiful places!

My son loves playing football and trains with the Dunblane Soccer Club with fantastic coaches at Dunblane High School. My daughter loves all her sports and trains with the Stirling Triathlon Club at various venues including Stirling University, The Peak and Kings Park, also run by amazing coaches.

I usually teach over the weekends so on the rare occasion that we have a full day together, we love to get in the car with a packed lunch and just drive somewhere up

Favourite child friendly restaurant

Our kids are old enough to sit and talk (or play games on their devices) to keep themselves occupied, so our ‘play area’ days are over! Although if we just want to go out for a drink, the Birds and Bees in Stirling is family friendly. India Gate is always a favourite! For a special occasion, Vecchia Bologna in Bridge of Allan is great! We enjoy the comedy nights at Kilted Kangaroo, or a play or film at Macrobert Arts Centre or Tolbooth. A walk to the Riverside or Tappit Hen for a few drinks or even a night out in Glasgow or Edinburgh is good!

Best planet saving tip

Being South African, I still love a good steak but Neil and the kids are vegetarian so we cook mainly vegetarian meals, our contribution to giving the planet a helping hand. I heard that eating less red meat would be a better way for people to cut carbon emissions than giving up their cars.

There’s always something memorable about family days out in the great outdoorsand when it comes to finding spaces for adventure – they don’t come on a much grander scale than The Great Trossachs Forest! At its heart is one of the most popular destinations when it comes to finding a place to let children go exploring – Loch Katrine. Loch Katrine is the starting point for so many different experiences – from walking by the loch shore, through to family cycling expeditions, and of course the opportunity to enjoy a sail on the legendary steamship Sir Walter Scott (or the modern cruiser Lady of the Lake). This really is the best way to enjoy the stunning scenery which was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago, and to discover the story of how the loch itself has supplied Glasgow’s tap water since the middle of the 19th century. Look out for ospreys and otters, and see if you can spot the wild goats on the shore during your cruise! Sailings depart from Trossachs Pier, which is easy to reach from all across Central Scotland, and where visitor facilities include The Brenachoile Café Bar and Restaurant. Celebrate the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 at Stirling’s famous landmark. The year got off to an exciting start with the announcement of the Scotland’s Heroines shortlist, which offers an excellent opportunity for kids (and adults) to learn more about the important role women have played in Scotland’s story. Don’t miss your chance to see the special display and to place your vote for the woman you would like to see permanently commemorated before voting closes on Friday 31st March. During April costumed actors will take visitors back to one of the most dramatic periods in Scottish history during performances of family favourites Tales from the Battlefield and Scotland’s National Hero each weekend, with additional performances on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Falkirk’s annual Pirates & Princesses Parade

The much loved Pirates and Princesses parade is back in town on Saturday 22nd April. On-street Pirate capers, facepainting, story-telling, arts & crafts, and much more from 12noon, featuring a town centre market from 11 – 4pm. Captain Barbarossa and the crew will be meeting hopeful crew members on the High Street from 1.30pm. The parade leaves the bandstand area at 3.30pm. All Pirates and Princesses, young and old, are invited to dress up, bring flags or banners and enjoy the fun. Prizes for all! Also ……Join the Pirate Treasure Hunt in Falkirk Town Centre commencing at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. This Easter Macrobert has a selection of fun and creative workshops to keep wee ones (age 5 and under), children (P4 to P7) and young people (S1+), entertained over the school holidays. Make this Easter even more fun for the kids with these simple to make Easter crafts; perfect for adults and children alike!

Easter egg-bunny

Use this simple step by step guide to make a super cute Easter egg bunny with your little munchkins… What you will need: • 1 hard-boiled egg • Yellow and white felt • PVA glue • Felt tip pens Step 1 Begin your craft by taking a freshly cooked and cooled hard-boiled egg. Step 2 Cut shapes for the bunny’s feet and hands out of the yellow felt; then cut larger ear shapes out of yellow felt and smaller ones from the white. Step 3 Stick the felt feet onto the base of the egg, making sure the egg can stand upright on them. Step 4 Stick the white ears onto the yellow. Once they have dried a little, stick them on to the rear of where the face will be. Step 5 Finally, draw a rabbit’s face on the front of the egg with the pens and decorate with patterns as your child likes. You could even stick a cute little bow on the top of the eggs by their ears, if you’re feeling really creative!

Easter bunny ears

Make sure your kids get into the Easter spirit with this simple to make homemade bunny ears. What you will need: • White cardboard • Scissors • Grey and pink paint • PVA glue • An Alice band Step 1 Get the kids to paint two sheets of white cardboard grey and then another two sheets pink. Step 2 Using child-safe scissors help them to cut out larger ear shapes from the grey cardboard and then slightly smaller ear shapes from the pink cardboard. Step 3 Using glue stick the smaller pink shapes onto the larger grey ears. Step 4 Finally, attach the shapes to the Alice band with the glue and leave to dry. t seems like only yesterday when you wouldn’t even go for a shower without taking your baby with you and, now, in the blink of an eye, the big day has dawned. Separation can be a very difficult emotion for you and your child, bringing both positive and negative feelings of guilt, relief, lack of control and nerves. So, what steps can you take to ensure the transition from home to nursery is as smooth and stressfree as possible for all concerned? Get comfy Being comfortable with the nursery or playgroup staff and its surroundings, prior to starting, is key to a more successful settling-in process. There will be plenty of opportunities to visit the nursery or playgroup which will help both parents and children familiarise themselves with the staff who will eventually be looking after their child and allow any issues to be discussed.

Prior to starting nursery or playgroup having opportunities to take your baby to local parent and toddler groups or baby classes can help build confidence, social and cognitive skills and provide a good opportunity for your child to get used to being with lots of other children. You may also make friends with fellow parents which all helps to make you feel more comfortable.

It is paramount that each child is treated as an individual and vital that each keyworker (that is the member of staff assigned to look after your child) only has a small number of children under their care so that individual requirements and needs can be met. Equally, it allows us to form a good relationship with the parents and encourage regular communication so any areas of concern can be addressed.

Talk through what will happen

Whether your child rushes in without a backward glance or throw themselves sobbing on the floor, be strong, be encouraging and, giving a clear message that you will be back soon, leave the room. Then go and do something for yourself!

Your child’s personality, their ability to handle change, and previous experience of being left alone with friends or family will affect how well your child handles separation. Start preparing for the big day in plenty of time by talking through what will happen at nursery or reading books designed to deal with first-day nerves.

1. Plan in a few short visits to the nursery/playgroup staying with your child, then leave them for short periods, building up their trust that you’ll always return. Visits to the nursery prior to their first day will enable you both to establish a positive relationship and get to know the staff and your key worker. 2. Whilst many children will first experience nursery when they are babies or toddlers, if they are a bit older, talk to them about the nursery/playgroup in a positive way, mentioning all the positive things they will get to do. There are some lovely books like ‘My First Day at Nursery’ by Becky Edwards and Anthony Flintoft and ‘Maisy Goes to Playschool’ by Lucy Cousins. 3. Communication is key to a good childcare experience for you and your child, so don’t be afraid to ask the nursery for feedback or discuss anything you want to. No question is ever a silly question as it is important that you feel comfortable with the care your child is receiving. 4. Talk to the nursery/playgroup if you are at a particular stage with your child be that weaning, toilet training etc. They will always be happy to help and have years of experience. 5. If nursery or playgroup is the first time your child has experienced significant periods of separation from you, maybe help this by arranging times with relatives or friends where your child can gradually get used to time spent away from you and feel comfortable with other people. 6. Pass on as much information as you can to the nursery about your child’s personality, likes and dislikes. Information is helpful to your child’s key worker and can help them settle your child in initially and then introduce your child to new experiences. 7. Try not to get too anxious about leaving your child or prolong the goodbyes. It can be difficult to leave while your child is crying but the nursery/playgroup will have plenty of strategies to distract your child and the staff will be happy for you to phone later on to check how your child is settling in. 8. As you return to work, rest assured that your precious little one is being well cared for and make the most of this stage of your family life.
