Recyke-a-bike’s new community café We’ve opened a community café alongside our bike shop in Causewayhead. It’s been quite a journey and the whole team got involved. The benches, counter and partition were built by our volunteers, placements and modern apprentices as part of a wood up-cycling course, they look fantastic! We must also thank local businesses and people who donated furniture and appliances - as usual we like to re-use and recycle and the community supported us. We now have a comfy, welcoming space serving home baking, light lunches and snacks and a full-time placement with training. We just hosted our first children’s birthday party combining cycling activities with lunch in the café. The café can be used out of hours as a venue and currently we have two groups using it quite regularly – undoubtedly we hope to generate income from our café but we also want it to be of use to the local community. Lights of love
Beauty and the Beast
A Christmas memorial service for families who have experienced the trauma of losing a baby is being held in Stirling. The service will take place in St Mary’s Church, Upper Bridge Street, FK8 1ES on Friday 8th December at 7.30pm. The Lights of Love event is being organised by Forth Valley Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity) and provides parents the opportunity to come together and acknowledge the lives of their babies at this difficult time of year. The Scottish Cot Death Trust will also be taking part in the service. The service consists of traditional carols, inspiring readings and beautiful music and there will also be an opportunity for people to light a candle in memory of their child. Everyone is welcome to attend and no booking is necessary.
This year’s pantomime from Howden Park Centre is once again packed full of songs, jokes and winter fun for all the family! Long, long ago, in a large ominous looking castle in West Lothian, a selfie-stick obsessed and arrogant Prince called Sebastian was cursed to live for all eternity as a Beast for refusing to marry the evil, yet exceedingly glamorous Witch, Veronica Venomossima. Can Sebastian break the curse by finding someone that can love him for who he really is…? Beauty and the Beast is on from Monday 11th to Thursday 28th December at Howden Park Centre in Livingston. Send a message that makes a difference this Christmas Pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research has taken an innovative approach to their range of Christmas cards this year, signing up supporter and artist, Caroline Copland, to design a new card for 2017. Caroline, who sadly lost her mother Janet to a brain tumour three years ago, was inspired by the Christmas Hope Trees which decorate the charity’s Research Centres of Excellence across the UK each year. The Hope Tree cards will join other festive favourites in the charity’s range. All cards are priced at £4 per pack of ten, with at least 60% of the proceeds going towards supporting vital brain tumour research. Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK focused on funding sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours, which kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. 10 Things to Do With Your Family This Christmas By Claire Winter
Every day we get closer to Christmas the children (and adults) get a little bit more excited. Here are some great ideas to get in the festive mood with the whole family. 1. It wouldn’t be Christmas without a Panto. Oh no it wouldn’t! Many families make it a tradition to watch a festive show, and we have some great local family Panto’s. Chick Whittington is on at Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, Peter Pan at FTH Theatre in Falkirk and Beauty and the Beast is on at Howden Park in Livingston. 2. Make your own Christmas tree decorations. There are loads of salt dough recipes on the internet and with a few Christmas cookie cutters, some paint and glitter your kids can make lovely decorations for the tree or to give to grandparents. 3. Bake with the kids. Make festive gingerbread men with the children. The smell of baking, ginger and cinnamon immediately evokes the scent of Christmas.You could also be ambitious and bake biscuits to construct a gingerbread house too. Don’t worry you can also cheat and buy a ‘Bake Your Own’ ginger bread house kit at Toy Hub. 4. Make reindeer food. Generate excitement about the arrival of Father Christmas and his reindeer by making a special food for Rudolf and friends. You can pre-make it and have it ready to sprinkle on the lawn or hallway on Christmas Eve, so Santa and his friends
know where to go! Mix oats with edible glitter (don’t use normal glitter as it could be harmful to animals) and cake sprinkles and then pop the mixture in a suitable bag. You can also get the kids to design their own festive labels and give the bags to family and friends at school. 5. Visit a Christmas market. There are some great local art and craft fairs at this time of year from the Art ‘n’ Mart Christmas markets in Dunblane Victoria Halls to local craft fairs at many local schools and community centres. Check out the shop at Callendar House for that special gift. 6. Sledging/Tubing. If we by any chance get some snow this Christmas then sledging with the kids is great fun - if not head to Polmonthill Ski slope just outside Polmont and Firpark in Tillicoultry for some tubing- the best fun ever!! 7. Deck the Halls. Put on some Christmas songs (we still love the That’s what I call Christmas Music!) and decorate the house as a family. Get all the decorations out and have fun making your home all Christmassy. Collect some greenery from the garden or whilst you are on a walk. The traditional holly and ivy looks great draped over a mantelpiece or around a doorframe.You could also get the kids to make their own decorations - card, glue and glitter is all you need!
8. Go and see the Christmas lights. This is a great way to get into the festive spirit without having to spend a fortune. Around the end of November, beginning of December our towns will all be lit up with the annual Christmas lights. There will be specific events in Stirling, Falkirk, Bo’ness Grangemouth, Dunblane and Stenhousemuir to switch on the lights with free entertainment but if this is too crowded then pop along any evening and wander down the street with the kids looking at the lights and festive shop windows. 9. Watch a Christmas film. Snuggling up with a hot cocoa and watching a festive classic can be just what the doctor ordered after a hectic day of Christmas shopping. It’s A Wonderful Life, Elf, The Polar Express and The Snowman and The Snowdog are just some of the films people love to watch. Or you can pop along to The Bo’ness Hippodrome and Macrobert Arts Centre which are all showing festive films this year as well as The Nutcracker. 10. Help others. Find out what your local food bank needs at Christmas time. Maybe they are collecting stocking fillers for children or need extra festive food. Start Up Stirling are always looking for donations. Get your children to think of someone locally who might like a visit or some extra help during the Christmas period.

Many families have enjoyed playing Monopoly over the decades and I am sure most of us will have a few unique family rules which we all remember. So it’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your kids and play this iconic game but with a great local theme. The Stirling Monopoly game is jam packed with Stirling’s most iconic landmarks from Stirling Castle and The Wallace Monument who are in the traditional Mayfair and Park Lane positions) to the Smith Gallery, Stirling University and The Tolbooth. There are also some of our favourite places to go such Blairmains Coffee Bothy and of course the Toy Hub in Bridge of Allan and Dunblane.

Dunblane will once again hold its family friendly Christmas Markets in the Victoria Hall, Dunblane on Sunday 5th November and Sunday 3rd December. Alloa Town Centre BID brings Christmas to Alloa. Come along to the Speirs Centre and see Santa in his grotto on Saturday 25th November, 2nd, 9th and 16th December (11-4pm, £5 per child.) I am a peripatetic nursery teacher, supporting 5 nurseries over Stirling and Clackmannanshire; Little Stars (Stirling & Alloa), Kidz World, Flying Start and Dollar Nursery School.
Why do you like living where you do We have recently moved to the Kings Park area of Stirling after 5 years of living in Doune. It is so wonderful being able to walk into town and there is still so much of the lovely green space that we had enjoyed previously. Although we have only been here for one month, we have already met lots of friendly families with young children and our two golden retrievers are having a great time exploring the parks. Favourite shop ‘Doune Time’ on Doune Main Street is a lovely wee shop where you can pick up gorgeous gifts or pieces for your home. It has a lovely selection and is fantastic value for money. Good Green Fun in Springkerse is also a great place to pop into every so often and see if you can pick up a bargain second hand toy. Favourite park The beautiful Ailie’s Garden behind the Smith Art Gallery is a hidden gem. It is a peaceful, magical spot and a great place to have a mini explore. Favourite day out On a dry day, a trip in the car up to Loch Lubnaig is always a favourite; it is not far and such a beautiful part of the world. If yucky weather, the McLaren Centre in Callander have just re-vamped their soft play and is a good place to let off steam for little people (and sells yummy cake for big people too).
Favourite child friendly restaurant A friend had recently recommended going to the ‘Hide-away Café’ in Bridge of Allan; I had passed by it a few times but never really heard much about it. I was really impressed! The service was wonderful, food was delicious and décor really vintage/quirky. Favourite night out without the kids Anywhere! I adore being a mummy, but a wee night to the cinema or a bite to eat with hubby or friends is always a treat (and helps keep me balanced/sane). Best planet saving tip Work in a nursery! Children can bring a second life to just about any piece of house hold waste. From junk modelling with cereal boxes to sauce jars used for paint pots; I recently took our old pans to the nursery to inspire some imaginary play in the mud kitchen. No parent should be without Bit of a tricky one; I have a bit of a ‘Mary Poppins handbag’ (just a nice way of saying I accumulate all sorts of nonsense). So, I can usually find something to entertain our wee ones if stuck in a queue or waiting at the doctor’s surgery. An imagination is also essential; our older two love making up songs and listening to funny stories, again and again. (and handwipes!) Parenting pet hates No judgement! I am a working mum of three under five, so have probably fallen into all the ‘pet hate’ categories at one point! Favourite family holiday spot We have been going to the Isle of Arran for over ten years and would highly recommend it as a family friendly holiday
spot. It is not too long a drive to the port and even the ferry journey is always an adventure in itself. Most loved children’s book Difficult to pick just one! We have recently read ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt, which was quite funny and a nice way to learn about colour. ‘The Paper Dolls’ by Julia Donaldson is always a strong favourite too! Best children DVD or tele programme Not a day goes by without a request for an episode of Paw Patrol. Most played with toys Loose part play! Whether it’s little Paw Patrol figures or various twigs/stones collected during a walk, our children are obsessed with ‘bits’; lining them up, putting them in handbags, filling up cupcake cases, etc. The tidy house vs supporting play battle continues!
