The golden age of silent cinema returns to Bo’ness in March (Wednesday 22nd-Sunday 26th), with events for audiences of all ages. The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema (or HippFest as it is affectionately known) offers classic comedy by the likes of Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton, alongside workshops, competitions and family fun, including its hugely popular Jeely Jar event (which gives you 2-for-1 entry if you bring a clean jam jar with you). The full 2017 programme is announced at the beginning of February (see www.hippfest.co.uk for details), but last year’s family highlights included the first ever film version of JM Barrie’s Peter Pan, with a brand new score, and a film screening on the platform at Bo’ness Station. Play Scotland is the National organisation for Play, committed to ensuring that all children have a wide range of opportunities to Play. Boredom Busters is a brand new, fun app for 8-12 year olds, designed to get children actively playing more in a variety of different ways. The app is packed full of inspirational ideas for ways to play in and around the home and allows children to share their play ideas with others. The app helps parents promote healthy, active play via an intuitive online environment.The fully moderated online space created by the app is designed to empower parents to encourage their children to use the app with confidence. Support Start Up Stirling in 2017 In December, over 200 families in Stirlingshire who would otherwise have gone without, were able to enjoy Christmas dinner as a result of our ‘Feed a Family’ appeal. Sincere thanks to everyone who supported this so generously and who enabled us to provide for those in need of emergency support from our food banks. It went a long way to easing the decision for those having to choose between heating or eating.We all know the difference having a healthy diet makes and so we want to continue providing those in financial crisis and attending our food banks throughout 2017 with fresh healthy foods. With each £100 raised, we can provide fresh fruit, veg, meat and dairy products for 25 families. Dyslexia programme changing lives It is estimated that around 10% of the population suffers from some form of dyslexia or similar processing difficulty. This affects how the brain processes language and, in addition to hindering academic progress, also impacts self esteem and confidence. Effective teaching goes a long way in helping people with dyslexia, however in Stirling there is also the unique Cellfield programme which can be life changing. Cellfield is a multi sensory computer based programme which develops and strengthens areas in the brain used for language processing. This can lead to average gains of 2 years in reading age and clients also experience positive outcomes leading to improved confidence and self esteem. Resolve to look after your eye health in 2017 Most people enter a new year with good intentions: improving our health is a popular one. Having an eye test is not usually something people think could help with that. You may have good sight and not need glasses but the eye test is about so much more than that. Our optometrist, Mary Docherty, can examine different parts of your eye to see how your general health is doing. In children, she can potentially identify problems that may be causing them to struggle with their school work. Families Central Scotland’s Top tips on how to have a stress free kid’s party

Parties are an important rite of passage for kids, it makes them feel special, and it’s a great way to have all their friends over for a play. It’s also a good excuse to have special outings and treats that you wouldn’t normally do but can on their birthday. So we know there is no such thing as a totally stress free kids party but we can try and make life a bit easier on ourselves at the same time as keeping the party fun and exciting. Here are some of our top tips.

1. Special date

Don’t choose the actual date of your child’s birthday to have the party on; you want to be able to enjoy them all to yourself on that day. Experience tells us that parents pile even more expectations on themselves when the party is arranged for the big day.

2. Keep it in perspective

Don’t be tempted to go large. Too many children can equate to complete chaos. If you are having the party at home then keep the numbers manageable. If you are hiring a hall then you can have more children and if you are asking a party entertainer then get their advice about what numbers they think will work.

7. Hide the presents

Take gifts your child is given discretely to one side and allow them to open them after everyone has gone. With smaller children, it can be very overwhelming and is often nice to save some presents for the following days.

8. Snap it

Ask a friend or family member who is at the party to use a camera or phone and capture snaps and videos for you.

9. Keep the food simple

Most children are too excited to have a big appetite and remember that some children might be vegetarian or have

a food intolerance. Lots of food options can be a bit overwhelming for kids so we tend to just have a few options (pizza or sausage rolls) and then some crisps and grapes and limit the sweets so there is room for cake and no one ends up with a sore tummy!!

10. Be prepared

Have the matches close to hand for when the time comes to sing happy birthday. Have the music ready so you only have to hit play; one CD of kiddie music is all you’ll need. Also having a few batteries handy is a good idea just in case!

how to beat the January blues O nce the excitement of Christmas is over and gone, it can often feel like a real struggle for the whole family to keep things fresh and lively at the beginning of a new year. However, there are so many opportunities for you to do things together as a family - both indoors and out - that you’ll soon banish the January blues! Here are a few ideas to keep in mind…

A family read-in

When it’s blowing a gale outside, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than snuggled up with a good book. For younger children you can encourage them to act out the story and show off your full range of funny faces and voices. For older children, take the opportunity to discuss what they’re reading in some depth - talk about plot and characters and why they enjoy a particular type of book. Who knows, you may even inspire them to try writing their own story!

Family Bake-Off

Who doesn’t love the Great British Bake Off? Those grey January days offer the perfect opportunity to get into the kitchen and bake up a storm. Let younger children indulge in some messy play with their own bowl of cake mix or a piece of pastry don’t get stressed about the mess but enjoy a real opportunity to spend some creative time together in the kitchen. For older children, encourage some healthy competition by going ‘full Bake Off ’ and seeing who can produce the best cookies or cupcakes.

Get creative in the garden

Outdoor crafts are a wonderful way to liven up the garden for pennies, using materials you can find outdoors or simply lying around the house. It’s amazing how ice, berries and watercolours or food colourings can transform tap water into

beautiful ice baubles to decorate the garden when set in interesting moulds. Or spread peanut butter all over the outside of an empty toilet roll holder or that piece of over crunchy toast, then roll in birdseed to create an instant feeder that the kids can hang near the kitchen or living room window. Add a bird book and they can pass a few hours identifying and logging the birds that come to visit. Just make sure they wrap up warm!

Of course, snow in January isn’t guaranteed, but if it does snow you have the ideal excuse to wrap up warm and organise snowman building contests and a monster snowball fight. Kids of all ages love playing in the snow, but have you ever played tug of war? Or tried snowball dodgeball? Once that snowman is built, try frisbeeing a hat onto his head or play a game of pin the nose on the snowman using a carrot. And everyone can join in a simple game of tag, made a little more interesting if you’re only allowed to use the footprints of the other players!

Create rock pets

The best way to blow away the cobwebs during January is to take the family for a long winter walk. It’s great exercise, but it’s even more fun if you make your walk an excuse to collect items for some winter crafting.

Find a talking stick

can only talk when holding the stick - so, for larger families, this could be an ideal way for your kids to create something that will ensure they’re heard.

Another interesting find on your walk might be a stick that transforms, with the help of some beads, feather, paint and markers into a wish stick for younger children or a talking stick for the older members of your tribe. Talking sticks have a long history in tribal cultures as a way of allowing everyone to have their say - you

On a clear night, there’s nothing better than wrapping up warm and heading outside to stargaze. Download an app and see how many constellations you can find and identify.Younger children will enjoy spotting stars and older ones can test their astronomical knowledge.

Have a tech-free day

Be brave and ban iPads, smartphones and games consoles for the day. Instead put out a pile of blank paper, pens and craft materials and see what your children can create. Boredom can be the best motivator for creativity.

Revive the art of den building

For younger children, provide blankets, boxes and furniture indoors while encourage older children to get outdoors and get den building in the garden or the woods. Find out who’s the Bear Grylls of the family and who can create the best fantasy castle/spaceship/dragon’s belly. Den building is for everyone, so get involved! Why do you like living where you do We love living in Dunblane. We moved here from Edinburgh 2 and half years ago and were instantly struck on how friendly everyone is here and how brilliant it is for kids.

Parenting pet hates Snotty noses! It is the season for runny noses but I do hate to see dried snot around a wee nose. It is so sore on their skin.

Favourite shop There are so many in Dunblane but Toy Hub has to be one of my favourites - you can always find a last minute birthday present here and they have an excellent range for all ages. My kids love it too for obvious reasons! Favourite park Braemar Park in Dunblane is our favourite. It has the most amazing views right across Dunblane and the countryside as it is at one of the highest points in the town and only 5 minutes from our house. Favourite children’s club/class Apart from Turtle Tots (!) Emily loves her gymnastics at Auchterarder Gymnatics Club and Callum loves Rugby Tots. Favourite day out We love a wee drive to Aberfoyle and a visit to the Lodge Forest Visitor Centre. A walk down to the waterfall is a great kids friendly walk through beautiful forest. Favourite night out without the kids. A lovely meal with some wine and a lie in the next day !!

No parent should be without It’s been said many times but how did I ever live without baby wipes in my life. I actually think that nobody should be without them, never mind parents!! However, saying that, we were going through too many of them and they are not very environmentally friendly so we did change to using a facecloth at meal times at home! Much better and warmer for faces in the morning!!

Favourite family holiday spot Tighnabruaich on Argylls Secret Coast. My husband has been going there since he was young and it is one of the most beautiful places, I think, on earth. Most loved children’s book Definitely Elmer by David McKee. We struggle to get the kids to read any other story at bedtime! Best children DVD or tele programme Go Jetters is a favourite just now - it is quite educational, I have learnt quite a few “funky facts” from watching !!! Most played with toys Toot Toot cars are definitely the favourite, even for Emily, though she is more into princess’s now. Jigsaws and board games are getting more popular - in fact a very cheap Peppa pig snakes and ladders game is never put away, it is played that much! Biggest waste of money As much as I love it, a teepee that Emily got for her 3rd birthday. It is lovely but she is more happy making dens behind the sofa or with blankets and chairs!

Most successful recipe/food Bolognese sauce always gets the plates clean at dinner time. It is so versatile and you can pack tons of veggies into it! “Mini trees” (broccoli) always gets eaten too, the kids absolutely love it! Any other comment I would just like to mention the Dunblane Centre too. It is the most incredible place to have on our doorstep and I am constantly amazed at how diverse their offerings are. From preschool gymnastics, art classes, choirs and fitness classes to 80’s and 90’s disco nights out and musicals, the list goes on. Even just for a coffee and a chat with friends while your wee one plays with the toys, it is an incredible facility to have for the community. Big Garden Birdwatch 2017 Last year over half a million people took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, spotting more than 8.5 million birds across the UK, and the organisers are hoping this year’s watch will be a record-breaking event. This year’s survey takes part on 30th and 31st January. To take part, simply spend one hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time. The morning is the best time to look, when the birds are out and about feeding after a cold winter night. Not sure what type of bird you are spotting in your garden? Don’t worry, the website has a handy interactive identifier and can help you spot what species of birds you have in your garden. There is also a special pack for schools wishing to take part.
