Bigger veg portions encourage kids to eat more
A new study by US researchers found that adding more veggies to their plates resulted in children consuming more vegetables at a meal. The researchers found that when they doubled the amount of corn and broccoli served at a meal the children ate 68% more of the veggies. Serving fruit and vegetable side dishes alongside a meal was found to be slightly less effective. Co-author Barbara Rolls says the findings offer parents and schools an easy strategy for encouraging healthy eating and stresses that half of the food on a child’s plate should be fruit and vegetables. If you find this method increases waste, just replace some of the more filling food on the place with even more vegetable produce, she suggests. More at www.sciencedaily.com/releases

Zebra moray eels are a fascinating species most notable for their remarkable two sets of jaws. The breed is also known for being able to tie themselves in a knot to ensure they get a good grip on their food. PRESSURISING PICKY EATERS DOESN’T WORK
While picky eating is part of the norm for developing toddlers, when it extends into the school years, it takes a toll on all involved. New research from Australian universities has found that a range of factors contributed to a child’s likelihood of being a fussy eater. The study found that pressuring a child to eat, offering rewards for eating and very strict parenting all negatively influenced fussy eaters. Whereas a more relaxed parenting style, eating together as a family and involving a child in the preparation of food all reduced the likelihood of fussy eating. Lead researcher Laine Chilman said ‘Eating together as a family, with siblings and having a single meal at a regular time all helped reduce food fussiness. As did getting the fussy child involved in the meal, either by helping to choose the menu, or helping to prepare the meal.’ More at www.sciencedaily.com/releases

Plastic-free Red Nose Day!

Red Nose Day 2022 will return on Friday 18th March and will feature a collection of the “wildest bunch” of character noses yet. There will be eight characters to track down, including the colourful Cam the chameleon. All Noses will be 100% plastic-free, making them green as well as red. Red Nose Day is a campaign created by Comic Relief to help raise awareness of and put an end to child poverty. SCHOOL TESTS DON’T AFFECT WELLBEING
Primary school tests do not seem to have a significant effect on the wellbeing and happiness of children, a study has found. Research conducted by University College London suggested that there was little difference in levels of wellbeing and happiness reported by children, regardless of whether they took Key Stage two tests or not. Children in Year 6 in England who took SATs tests did not experience any significant change in how they felt about themselves, their family lives and their school in the weeks surrounding the tests, the study discovered. Researchers say that there does not seem to be sufficient evidence to support getting rid of SATs tests ‘on wellbeing grounds,’ in spite of calls from both parents and teachers to scrap the compulsory assessments. The research also found there was no evidence to show that pupils who were happier or more self-confident in the build-up to the tests achieved higher scores. More at www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events
Sibling bullying and mental health
Bullying by a brother or sister in childhood can have lasting effects, threatening mental health in the teen years, new research suggests. Researchers from University of York analysed data from around 17,000 youngsters in the UK from ages 11 to 17, looking at whether they had been picked on by a brother or sister. Bullying was defined as hurting a sibling on purpose emotionally or physically, such as fighting and name calling. The study found children bullied between ages 11 and 14 were more likely to have mental health issues by age 17. Data showed they were almost twice as likely to be introverted, compared to children who had good relationships with their siblings. It also found children who picked on their siblings were just as likely to suffer as their victims, which scientists said was ‘of particular note.’ More at www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events

New law to protect breastfeeding mothers
Taking photos of breastfeeding mothers in public without their consent is to be made a crime in England and Wales. Campaigners have welcomed the law-changing decision. Julia Cooper from Manchester began the campaign to make taking pictures of breastfeeding mothers illegal after her own experience in a local park last April. ‘I sat down to breastfeed my daughter and I noticed a man on another bench staring at us,’ she said, ‘he got out his digital camera, attached a zoom lens, and started photographing us. I just felt that it was so wrong that we had been violated in this way and there was nothing the police could do to help,’ she added. ‘This change in the law will provide the reassurance that mothers can breastfeed in public without strangers freely photographing and filming as they wish.’ familiesonline.co.uk

Nurturing emotional intelligence through play by Dr Anne Lane When my daughter was in her first year at nursery her favourite game was pretending to say goodbye to me. ‘Bye Mama, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later.’ ‘Oh no! You’re not going...’ I’d say after her, ‘I don’t want you to go!’ The more I sighed ‘Don’t go,’ the more she’d giggle and run off. Thus reassured, we were ready for our day. These little moments of play helped my daughter process her separation from me at nursery from a space of safety and connection. For a child, life can be full of emotional demands; from the strains of separation from you, to new friendships, periods of uncertainty and family changes. As a parent and psychologist, one of the most effective and fun ways I have found to help children navigate experiences and the difficult emotions that come with these is through this process of play. Simple, giggly, repetitive play helps children develop a resilience and familiarity with situations which can dispel tension and anxiety. SO HOW DOES PLAY WORK? Play is serious work for your child. The process of role-playing real scenarios allows them to reflect on their reactions and beliefs about a situation. They can steady their emotions and become more nuanced and agile in their reactions. The most important aspect of play is that it feels safe. In the real world, things are unpredictable. People can be abrupt and cross and make your child feel vulnerable and uncertain. But in the world of play, they get to switch things around and feel empowered. They can explore and try different things. The play scenario can be ridiculous, funny and amusing and tense and tight emotions soften and ease. Against this background of safety and security, your child can become more comfortable making suggestions and changing things, allowing their understanding of situations to develop. They’re the boss, they call the shots and decide how a situation goes. From this place of safety, they revisit difficult experiences without feeling vulnerable or uncertain. In role playing and playing out different scenarios with them, your child comes to know you as someone who can understand and relate to their experience. They feel steady and secure. TOP TIPS FOR PLAYING When you play with your child, focus less on conversation and more on acting things out familiesonline.co.uk
and exploring. This focus away from language allows your child to relax and connect. Follow the laughter. When your child is laughing they are releasing fear and tension, enveloped in happiness with you. Silliness, smiles and laughter are great indicators that play is working. Let your child take the lead. If you can, get down to their level. Prioritise your child feeling in control. If your child seems uncertain or pulls back then slow down, change things around. Let them be the boss. Be careful with tickling. Although a lot of children love tickling, the feeling of being tickled can be overwhelming and intense. Instead prioritise play which creates real engagement and collaboration, as well as laughter. Play doesn’t have to be big, take long or be over-planned. Make it spontaneous and funny. Some of my children’s favourite games can involve me simply looking surprised or pretending to sleep on the sofa! Dr Anne Lane is a clinical psychologist and author. USING PLAY TO WORK THROUGH DIFFICULT EMOTIONS ROLE REVERSALS ARE A FANTASTIC WAY TO HELP CHILDREN FEEL SAFE AND MORE IN CONTROL AROUND AN AREA OF ANXIETY. You might role play being worried about something (for example, a teddy bear or a falling leaf). Your child gets to reflect on what it feels like to be anxious and to calm you. EASING RESISTANCE OR STRUGGLE: does your child become frustrated and resistant even around small things like brushing teeth or dressing? Playing in a way that brings on giggles melts away these tired, stuck emotions. I’ve often pretended to scrub the floor and a child’s legs etc with the toothbrush. When they start giggling and the mood softens, you can say: ‘Here you go, let’s get those teeth brushed.’ PLAY CAN ALSO HELP YOUR CHILD NOTICE AND REFLECT ON A BEHAVIOUR. If your child is being mean to another, play ‘shaking out the meanies.’ The behaviour gets named but without shaming a child, tension shifts and a more collaborative, open way of relating replaces the power play.

Learning the Times Tables – Tips & Tricks In 2020, it became compulsory for all Year 4 students to undergo a new times table test and this is likely to put additional pressure on parents to help their children get to grips with their times tables. Children’s inability to instantly recall times tables and manage simple multiplication is a recurring theme of mathematics teaching reported by teachers in primary schools. These skills need to be embedded by Year 4 in order to prepare for the maths teaching for the next two years. At secondary school, lack of basic numeracy, including not knowing their multiplication tables really well, can lead to an inability to grasp new concepts and really slow children’s mathematical progress. While it may seem tedious to practise times tables with your child,by ensuring your child is confident with times tables you will be equipping them with essential tools for success in maths.
Getting Familiar with Multiplication Concepts
The first step with multiplication is to make sure your child understands what multiplication really means. In other words, they need to understand that 4 x 3 is the same as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 and be confident with such number sequences.
The Rule of Commutativity
Show your child that each answer repeats, so, technically, they only have to learn half of the tables. In other words, 4 x 5 is the same as 5 x 4. The rule of commutativity helps them understand that they know more than they might think.
the answers to the 8 times table are double the answers to the 4 times table. For example, 5 × 8 = 40 is the same as 5 × 4 × 2. Learning the 11 times table is actually easy up to the number 9. It is simply doubling the appearance of the number you wish to multiply by. For example, 2 x 11 = 22, 3 x 11 = 33, 4 x 11 = 44 and so on.
Point Out Patterns
It doesn’t all have to be memorised by rote. There are clues and helpful hints that can be learned. For example 2x is just doubling the number. This is the same as adding the number to itself: 2x2=4, 2x3=6, 2x4=8 etc. So the pattern is 2, 4,6, 8 etc. And once these are remembered then the rule of commutatavity above means they also know 3x2, 4x2 etc. 9× has a pattern too: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90. Notice how the tens (first digits in every number) go up by one and the units (second digits) go down. All the multiples of ten end in zero. All the multiples of 5 end in either 5 or 0 and are half as large as the multiples of ten. (10x5=50 which is half of 10 x 10 = 100). Any number x 0 is always 0. No matter what. The answers to the 4 times table are double the answers to the 2 times table. For example, 3 × 4 = 12 is the same as 3 × 2 × 2. Likewise,

4 times tables: Double the number you are multiplying, then double it again! It is simply a matter of doubling the number, then doubling the answer. For example, 4 x 5 is 5 + 5 = 10 and then 10 + 10 = 20. 4 x 5 is 20. 12 times table is 10x plus 2x. For example: 10 x 4 = 40, then add 2 x 4 = 8
Drilling
Some drilling is inevitable. Drilling should be done once the child is familiar with their tables or at least a set of numbers. Drilling should be started in order and once you feel they are getting there you can mix it all up. They may hesitate at the beginning but the more you drill the more the times tables will be embedded into their memories.

Teach the Tricks
The great thing with times tables is that there are many tricks that can help your child memorise them more easily. Let’s take a look at a couple of tricks: 2 times tables: Double it! Two times a number simply means add the number twice. 6 x 2 is actually 6 + 6 and 8 x 2 is the same as 8 + 8.
Some children like to learn by rote; for others it doesn’t work at all. To support their learning, work out what will make times tables stick in your child’s mind, whether that’s singing them, putting them into practice with puzzles, playing games with them or writing them out. Good luck! If you want some extra help with teaching your children then there are many different tutors out there and some specialise in Maths such as Mathnasium.
