Makeover for Merstham
The Portland Drive area of Merstham is set for a makeover in a multi-million pound regeneration scheme that will provide new shops, community facilities and homes. The site of the Iron Horse pub will house a Morrisons ‘M Local’ convenience store as well as three other shops, with ten shared equity flats built above. A new, purpose-built community centre will be built on the ‘Triangle’ at the junction of Portland Drive and Bletchingley Road.With a new library, youth skills centre, training rooms, a café, public IT resources and drop-in advice facilities, the centre will give easier access to local services. Bike to school! Reigate Parish, St John’s Primary and Langshott Infant schools received Sustrans Awards for increasing regular cycling levels amongst the children as part of the ‘Bike It’ project. Reigate Parish began the Bike It project last year, with cycle training for the whole school. Their cycling levels more than doubled, from 11% to 25% in a year – and the percentage of pupils who say they are regularly driven to school dropped from just under half to 34%.

New vision for Leatherhead
Calling all budding archaeologists
Leatherhead will benefit from funding (2015/2016) via a government ‘Growth Deal’ initiative, with plans submitted by the ‘Coast to Capital’ Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to revitalize the town in partnership with local residents and businesses.
‘Discovering Tutankhamun’ is the new exhibition at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum - a wonderful introduction to the excitement of early 20th century archaeology in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. Unearthing the tomb, which dates from about 1322BC, brought huge excitement. The discovery caused a sensation as photographer Harry Burton’s images appeared around the world. Tut-mania had begun!
Further government funding to take the plans forward is expected in the future. Surrey is also eligible for other funding – to support sustainable transport amongst other things – via the Coast to Capital LEP. A total of £2billion has been allocated by the government for 39 LEPs for 2015/2016.
Tutankhamun
The exhibition started 24 July and runs until 2 November. It brings many previously unseen photographs, paintings and diary writings from the time of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, the young Egyptian Pharoah, in 1922. The exhibits demonstrate the importance of good archaeology and the attention to detail by Howard Carter and Lord Canarvon in the excavation. One astonishing revelation is that the most of the Tutankhamun excavation records, which are housed in the Griffith Institute, next to the Ashmolean, have not yet been researched. There is plenty of material for budding archeologists!
Admission to the exhibition costs ÂŁ9. For 12-17yr olds, ÂŁ4.50. Under 12s go free. Admission to the main Ashmolean Museum is free of charge. Professional maths help for children aged 5 and up This September, a new national curriculum will be taught in schools across England. However, many parents in England are totally unaware of the changes, making them be ill-prepared to help their child with their studies and support them in their development. Mole Valley scoops heritage award Mole Valley is the proud winner of the Heritage Open Days award, for its collaborative approach and well co-ordinated programme of Heritage Open Day events. Meeting Mums, Making Friends Mum Amie is a new, free to use, meet-a-mum website that matches users’ profiles for compatibility, enabling mums to make friends. First introduced to Families Surrey East readers in the May-June issue (page 3) the site went live in the summer. It uses dating-site technology to match up mums and help them find friends with similar interests and circumstances easily and quickly. Aimee Foster, co-director of Mum Amie said “66% of mums we surveyed had at times found motherhood a lonely experience and 44% said that they did not find it easy to meet other mums.“ She continued, “Almost five years on from the birth of my first child, I now have a wonderful network of mum friends. But it didn’t happen overnight. Here are a few things I learned along the way: Just Do It! You have to get out there and meet people, they won’t come to you. Busylizzy’s Family Club, Reigate launches in January 2015! Busylizzy
is a clever new approach to mum and baby groups, already established in Guildford, Farnham and Woking. It is a members’ club for families, offering great baby, active tots and fitness classes run by qualified teachers in beautiful surroundings. The classes are included in a monthly membership fee. Monthly or pay-as-you-go Busylizzy members can book classes, talks and social events online or through the mobile app. With classes 51 weeks per year and bookings that can be changed up to two hours before a class, there are no more lost sessions due to unforeseen events. The first 100 members will pay a reduced joining fee (usually £99). One month’s membership of £39.50 pays for eight classes. Redehall welcomes new Head Mrs Wright B.Ed (Hons) NPQH will be the new Head at Redehall from September. During the summer holidays Mrs Wright has prepared for the implementation of an exciting new curriculum; arranged extensive after-school activities and a holiday club. Taking place at the Birtley House Estate, Bramley, nr Guildford on Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 October from 10am to 5pm, there’s a whole host of activities for all ages, including animal attractions, children’s activities including tree climbing and a zip wire, horse and wagon rides and bug hunts. There will also be coppice craft demonstrations and wood products on sale alongside other trade stands and local produce.
Access to the reserves is free and open to all. There are meadows, woodland copses, a wetland area with ponds and small pools, an orchard, a wildflower meadow and a butterfly garden covering 26 acres in the heart of Lingfield. A network of both hard-standing and grass paths makes it suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Volunteers meet monthly to carry out a variety of tasks in order to maintain the wildlife habitats. New volunteers of all ages are always very welcome. SURREY FOOD & FARM WEEK 20-28 SEPTEMBER Every year many farms in Surrey open their gates and let the public in to see how their food is produced. Farmers arrange tours of their farms at this time of ‘harvest festival’ and it’s a unique opportunity for parents to show their children just where food comes from! The week ends with the county ploughing match and country fair in front of Loseley House near Guildford. With a lovely relaxed atmosphere, it draws crowds of around 12,000 for a fantastic country day out for the whole Family (and the dog!).
