Perfect summer visit to West Dean

Out-of-school time just gets better
The Cranbrook group of local nurseries offers all-day care for 0 to school age children across the Surrey-Sussex border. But Cranbrook Adventurers is different! It has facilities for children from 4+ years in the Horley area.
The stunning estate of West Dean near Chichester is open all summer for estate walks and visits to the newly restored sunken garden and the Victorian greenhouses. Famous for its short courses, West Dean also plays host to the Chilli Fiesta from 8-10 August, with camping available that weekend (see p.8). West Dean’s tearoom is now open for breakfasts as well as the renowned cream teas. Entry to the garden costs £8.10 for adults but children go free. Hobbledown Award Hobbledown has been named the Best Outdoor Play Venue in the South East. The adventure park and farm was given the title in the Outdoor Play Awards run by parenting site Netmums.com. Owned by Richard Farley and Nick de Candole, Hobbledown opened in 2012 and boasts a variety of adventure play equipment including towers, underground tunnels, a daring High Ropes Course, sand play zones, mazes, aerial walkways, jumping pillows and much more. Breakfast and after-school club Cranbrook Adventurers is a breakfast and after-school club for primary and junior school children in term-time. With a pick-up service from some local schools, children benefit from 1/3 acre of grass to play on, a hot meal provided by the staff and a variety of activities on offer inside and out. Children can meet new friends in a fresh environment right through to 6.30pm. Ever been stuck on an inset day? It’s not always easy for parents who plan their holidays well ahead, only to find an inset day added to the school holiday. Cranbrook works to fill those gaps and to offer creative activities, visits and sporty fun from 7.30am on Inset days and during the school holidays. Cranbrook’s summer holiday club runs from 24 July to 5 September plus any inset days. Summer reading challenge Local libraries are encouraging children to read more this summer – and will present a certificate to children who have read six or more books from the local library. This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’ which challenges children from 4-11yrs to find their way around a labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures, collecting stickers of each character along the way. Children can chat, get reading recommendations and enter competitions on the Summer Reading Challenge website. Mobile weather app for summer The Met Office can now offer hourly forecasts for the first two days of their five-day forecast – meaning you don’t need to get caught out with a sudden rainstorm at Glastonbury or a heat wave during Glyndebourne! The new Children and Families Act 2014 means that separating couples must attend mediation meetings before disputes are taken to court. A free online service is now available from the relationship research charity OnePlusOne to help separating couples work out the best arrangements for their children and to continue to parent in the best way possible, despite their break-up. ‘Splitting Up? New club to support early learning in Uganda

Elsewhere in the world many children start school without any concept of education and without the confidence they need to do well. Uganda has the second highest primary school drop-out rate in the world, with about 68% of children not making it through to the end.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) offers parents many things, from practical advice to social events. Earlier this year they devised a letter, written by employment lawyers, to help parents approach their employers to request flexible working. Birthday parties too!

Getting little ones talking The New Dad’s with signing gestures Survival Guide A news story on the BBC reported that US researchers found that toddlers who use gestures to convey meanings at 14mths have larger vocabularies on reaching school age, so they are better prepared for school. With around 85 per cent of deaf children attending a mainstream school, the country’s leading awarding body for qualifications in deaf communication, Signature, is urging families to learn British Sign Language (BSL) to ensure their children are equipped with the skills needed to communicate with deaf peers. More low-key but great-value fun for the family is the National Trust’s ‘Big Camping Weekend’, taking place on Donkey Green at Box Hill nr Dorking on Saturday, 19 July - as well as other NT properties. A BBQ is supplied for cooking and there are plenty of walks and the Natural Play area for kids. Parking is in Box Hill main car park at the top of the hill. Dogs are allowed. Camping Pods on the Norfolk Broads This is a ‘5-star’ park on the Norfolk Broads at Waveney River Centre on the Norfolk-Suffolk borders in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The core skills of agility, balance, speed and co-ordination can develop within an environment, where, unlike football, size really doesn’t matter. From age 3, children can enjoy the ‘fun with a purpose’, using smaller and lighter bats to suit their own size. Good hand-eye co-ordination is apparent even at 3 yrs but can be taught to any child. Youngsters who aim high can surprise themselves!
Parents and coaches role Enthusiasm and inspiration comes from coaches and parents alike. Coaches not only teach a skill, it is important for them to inspire and make a difference to each child. The sense of achievement witnessed when a child bowls for the first time or takes their first catch is priceless. Free lunches in schools Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced the introduction of universal free school meals for the youngest school children last September, to start in September 2014. However, with many schools needing to rebuild their kitchens, not all schools will be ready. From September 2014 all pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools in England will be eligible for free school meals. This will include academies, free schools, pupil referral units and alternative provision as well as maintained schools. My daughter’s primary school closed its kitchen to make way for better staff room facilities. That was in the 1990’s but many schools have done the same thing. The advent of free school meals for the youngest pupils should change all that – but it will be interesting to find out how our local schools are faring. Many are building new kitchens – but that will take time!
