Local News CLUB NEWS Roller skating with more space! Sunday Fun skating and Federation grade roller skating lessons will take place at Reigate College Sports Hall in Rushworth Road Reigate from Sunday, 22 September, offering more space than at the current YMCA venue in Earlswood. The Fun Skate starts at 11.30am until 12.25pm, followed by the lessons until 1.25pm.
Cleaning up our beaches Charity might begin ‘at home’ but much of our ecology starts in the sea! The Marine Conservation wants to tackle the tide of litter washed up on our shores and needs you. Dance as an extra-curricular GSCE! If your children are keen on dance of any type, a new opportunity to study Dance at GSCE level could fulfil their ambitions and give them an extra GSCE into the bargain – outside of school hours! Dance Division, an independent dance school based in Brockham, offers vocational performing arts training for students of all ages. Sick Laundry?

Just as we have got used to the economical benefits of washing clothes at lower temperature, scientists now find that supposedly ‘clean’ laundered clothes are harbouring bacteria. Whilst a move away from the high-temperature washes and harsh detergents has proved kinder to fabrics, the environment and sensitive skin, research shows potentially harmful bacteria in our laundry is not being taken care of. Items that are most likely to be contaminated with pathogens are those that come into direct contact with the body - underwear, towels, facecloths, bedlinen and nappies (Ref: Clothing, household linens, laundry and home hygiene International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH) 2011)
Leading hygiene expert, Dr Lisa Ackerley, refers to this as the ‘Sick Laundry Cycle’. She is calling for an increased awareness and has provided tips for breaking the cycle.

How to break the Sick Laundry Cycle: Dr Ackerely’s tips ¡ The higher the temperature the better the germ kill. Do at least one wash at 90°C once a month to give your machine a spring clean and make sure it’s not a reservoir of infection. ¡ When washing at lower temperatures, use a laundry disinfectant to help kill bacteria (look near the detergent shelves in your supermarket). ¡ Wash underpants and socks in a separate wash from face flannels and tea towels, especially if you are using a low-temperature wash. ¡ Don’t shut your machine door immediately after a wash. By letting it air, you help to reduce the growth of bacteria inside. ¡ Regularly clean your washing machine’s door seals and detergent drawer. ¡ Wash your hands thoroughly after handling heavily soiled laundry. If you’re washing at low temperatures without a laundry disinfectant, also wash your hands after you take the wet items from the machine.

Has she got an enhanced CRB check? Has she got her own transport? If you are going out before the kids have eaten, bathed or gone to bed, you’ll want to kow that they can cope with those activities and that your children will be happy with them. A face-to-face interview is the best way to make this judgement. Your baby sitter must be able to cope in an emergency,which means they'll need a good command of the English language. Always book her to arrive early enough to run through their bedtime routine; what they are allowed to eat; how she can contact you and when you expect to return. POSTNATAL CARE FOR MUMS Pregnancy brings with it a constant time of change with postural changes, increased weight gain and ligaments becoming more stretched in preparation for your newborn. These changes can cause discomfort including low back pain, pelvic joint pain and pain in the ribcage, shoulder girdle and neck. Persistent back pain during pregnancy is estimated to affect more than 50% of pregnant women. Migraines, heartburn and numbness in the arms and legs are also common symptoms. There is help available both before and after the birth. This article looks at postnatal therapies.
Osteopathy The spine and pelvis undergo various stresses during childbirth. Having the spine functioning well is important because the spine houses the nerves that control everything in the pelvis and surrounding area. Any physical tension in the area (even very subtle) can restrict nerves, blood flow and muscle tone, all of which can lead to problems and discomfort both before and after pregnancy. Osteopathy can help with many of these issues in a gentle and effective way by using soft tissue techniques, joint articulation and joint mobilisation in conjunction with ultrasound and electrotherapy. Advice on exercise or referral to other modalities (such as pilates) is also given. Particular attention is given to changes in physical factors such as posture, lumbar and pelvic tilts, ligament laxity and muscle imbalances that may result from pregnancy and childbirth. The benefits of post-natal Osteopathy come from restoring the natural movement and structure of the body.
Craniosacral Therapy It is important for a new mother to feel nurtured when most of her energy is given to nurturing her newborn. A postpartum CST session addresses structural issues that have arisen during pregnancy particularly realignment of spine and pelvis. It also includes looking at any new discomforts associated with carrying and care of a newborn. It is not uncommon for a woman to feel traumatised or overwhelmed especially if she has experienced a complicated birth. Postpartum CST helps to process and integrate her birth experience on both a physical and emotional level. CST for newborns can help to ease and minimise the effects of a difficult birth

During the birth process it is normal for the cranial bones to overlap each other, mould and distort in order to pass through the pelvis, however if they do not self-correct they can interfere with cranial nerve function. Common symptoms that I treat are colic, reflux, non-sleeping babies, fussy, hard-to -soothe babies, babies who seem overly sensitive, babies who favour turning their head to one side and teething babies.

These tailor-made sessions assist women with the physical changes, accommodating their growing bumps. Like hypno-birthing and other meditative techniques, Pilates allows women to take time re-connecting mind to body.

Start to swim
September is the perfect time to improve on this summer's swimming; to add some confidence, style and safety or - for the youngest ones - a good time to join a ‘learn to swim’ school and make their splash debut. Local swimming schools offer small-size classes (eg two adults to 6 children) where your child can make good progress and where teachers can respond quickly to their individual skills and needs without any competitive pressure. At what age can a parent first bring a baby to swim? Some clubs will take babies from 12 weeks if the pool is warm enough. Ask the club about immunizations required before starting. Other clubs start later – eg at 2+yrs. Is it good to start so young? Parent and Child groups can create a great experience of water for a baby. Starting young instils confidence. Do some children have a real fear of water? A fear of water is unusual and most likely stems from a bad experience. The youngest babies still have a ‘diving reflex’: they automatically hold their breath and open their eyes under water – with no fear! Any child with a fear of water can sit poolside and watch until they feel ready to join in the fun. Do swim schools work toward certificates and exams? Most do staged club or ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) certificates, not exams. The National Teaching Plan for Swimming (NTPS) provides stages for children to be competent, confident and safe in water. Does your club offer diving lessons, lifesaving or other special swimming styles? The main focus is to develop a strong stroke and stamina. Some schools do extra courses such as distance swimming, starts, breathing technique, dives, turns and lifeguard. Can you train children who seem particularly talented? Any swimmer with a strong talent and a desire to compete may be offered a tailored programme to enhance technique and / or recommended to a local swimming club. Pool Schools offer 60-minute ‘Swim fit’ sessions for noncompetitive high level swimmers. Do all primary / junior schools offer their pupils swimming classes in term time? Classes are part of the national curriculum but large numbers, short lessons and short courses mean that not every pupil will learn to swim. What are the benefits of swimming? Swimming promotes physical well being, improves cardiovascular condition, increases physical capacity and burns fat. Education Record number of scholarships at the Hawthorns The girls and boys at The Hawthorns School, Bletchingley have gained a record 49 Scholarships and Awards between them at 11+ and 13+ moving on to a huge range of senior schools. As part of the Year 8 leavers programme following their exams the children have been to the Isle of Wight for a residential sailing course, visited the Houses of Parliament, undertaken Rookie Lifeguard training and learned some Mandarin, become film makers for a day, not to mention taking part in an open-air production of The Three Musketeers in their last week at school.
Mealtime chat supports kids’ learning New research shows that children who sit down to eat dinner and talk with their family are far more confident communicators than those who don’t. The research with nearly 35,000 children and young people across the UK found that two thirds of those who talk daily with their family at meals feel confident to speak in front of a group but less than half of those who eat in silence do. Children who don’t enjoy regular talk at mealtimes are also four times more likely not to feel at all confident putting their hand up in class or working in a team. Families can play their part in giving their children a solid foundation in speaking and listening skills by taking simple steps like chatting together at mealtimes. Words for Life is a National Literacy Trust campaign targeted at parents and carers to give them the tools, resources and confidence to give their child the best possible foundation in communication, reading and writing skills. One person in six in the UK cannot read, write or communicate as well as they need, and parental input, particularly in the early years, plays a key part in how well a child’s literacy skills develop.
