ChildLine volunteers wanted NSPCC research shows that. on average, two children in every primary school classroom have suffered abuse or neglect. The majority of cases go undetected. These young children often feel alone and desperate and many have nobody to turn to. The NSPCC will launch a national appeal to support an ambitious new programme for national children’s charity ChildLine to visit every primary school in the UK by 2016, helping younger children’s understanding of abuse and how they can stay safe. TV presenter and ChildLine counsellor Anna Williamson is calling for volunteers to help the charity in Surrey. She said: “I’ve been a ChildLine counsellor for six months and think this new service will really help to raise awareness of ChildLine and let children know that they are not alone.� The service will be delivered by volunteers, with sessions approved as suitable for nine to 11-year-olds by child protection specialists. Redhill’s Memorial Park to get £1.4m makeover
Leatherhead Help Shop moves From Spring 2013, the Help Shop in Leatherhead will be based at the town’s library at The Mansion House. The move will reduce duplication and is part of a cost-saving exercise but should provide for a better service going forward. The library is just three minutes walk away and offers two disabled parking bays and two hours free parking for customers, so there are advantages to drivers to the HelpShop. As a County Council service, more information about the library can be found at surreycc.gov.uk/libraries.
Sugarlumps Café opens in Merstham
Memorial Park in Redhill town centre is to get a £1.4 million facelift to improve the park and its facilities. Plans include: · building a new café pavilion with toilets · moving the children’s play area to a more central location, next to the new café, and improving it · creating a ‘sports zone’ by updating the existing sports facilities · improving the park’s cycle route and widening paths · increasing access to the town centre · reinvigorating the sensory garden · introducing planting schemes offering greater biodiversity, such as areas of meadow Work should start in autumn 2013 and be complete by the summer of 2014.

Walking and cycling should become the norm for short journeys says the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), in new guidance published this month. Regular exercise helps achieve a healthy lifestyle; preventing up to 50% of coronary heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes, as well and protecting mental health. NICE guidelines now suggest integrating walking routes with public transport for longer journeys. Signage should give details of the distance and/or walking time between transport facilities and destinations. Local News Dunnottar School in St Lucia
New aerial adventure course for Guildford A brand new aerial adventure park is coming to Guildford’s Stoke Park, subject to final approvals - and to open in Spring 2013.
Dunottar’s charity spreads to the West Indies Ruth Hyde, former student at Dunottar School and now a consultant in Data Analytics, took a career break to do voluntary work at another school with the same name in St Lucia, West Indies. Dunnottar in St Lucia is a special needs school for eighty students with disabilities such as Downs syndrome and Autism. Ruth cooked, assisted in the classrooms, computerised student records, helped create a school website (dunnottar.lc), made booklets about the school and set up special IT software for the children. She successfully applied for a grant for playground equipment, and then project-managed the building of the playground. “I loved my time at the school,” said Ruth, “The children were always full of smiles even when times were tough. I was humbled and learnt many life lessons.”
Junior Youth Voice Leader elected Theo Down, Year 6 pupil from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Dorking, was elected the new leader of Mole Valley’s Junior Youth Voice in November’s meeting at the Council Chamber at Pippbrook, Dorking, where they meet every two months.
With over 30 separate aerial-stations the new Wild Wood Aerial Adventure will have both a high and a lowrope course, incorporating zip-wires, towers, wobbly bridges and complemented by challenging obstacles, a 15 metre descender and other physically taxing tasks for children and adults alike. Wild Wood Aerial Adventure will be located at Peacock Wood on the north side of Stoke Park opposite The Spectrum Leisure Centre. Minimal impact on trees, low carbon footprint and high safety factor have been designed into the scheme.

High Income Child Benefit charge - what you need to know A High Income Child Benefit charge will be introduced from 7 January 2013. You may be liable to this new tax charge if you, or your partner, have an individual income of more than ÂŁ50,000 and one of you gets Child Benefit or contributions towards the upkeep of a child.

This affects married and unmarried couples and it affects partners living together even if they are not both the biological parents of a child. For those earning more than ÂŁ50,000 p.a. you are expected to fill in a self-assessment tax return form each year. Child Benefit has to be declared as income.
Ask your employer to sign up to a childcare voucher scheme – see page 7 - which helps them by reducing their National Insurance bill and helps you to reduce your taxable income by sacrificing some of your salary then using it to pay for childcare for children up to the age of 15yrs (nurseries, nannies, holiday camps – check first that they accept them). Making payments to charities through GiftAid may also help reduce your net adjusted income to under the £50,000 threshold.
For every ÂŁ100 of income you or your partner have between ÂŁ50,000 and ÂŁ60,000, there is a tax charge of 1% of your total Child Benefit.
Where to get more information
The higher earner’s salary is the one that is taken into account.
Your income is based on your adjusted net income. Even if you or your partner have an income of £50,000 a year or more, you may find that the tax charge doesn’t apply. Adjusted net income is your income less any payments you make to a pension scheme, donations to charity through Gift Aid and reductions due to membership of salary sacrifice schemes such as childcare vouchers and the 'Cycle to Work' scheme. You could consider increasing payments to your pension, for example, to bring your annual adjusted net income down. For those receiving more than £60,000 net adjusted income p.a. you can opt to stop receiving Child Benefit as the tax charge would wipe out any financial gain. If you surrender your Child Benefit you won’t have to complete a tax return. Higher earners (>£50,000 p.a.) in receipt of Child Benefit should register for self-assessment with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) by 6 Oct 2013.

As mum to two children, Helen found it challenging to find the right time and place to exercise while she was pregnant. After she had given birth Helen wanted the option to keep her baby in view while she exercised. So Helen’s idea for The Fitness Room was born. She is now fully qualified, registered and insured with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP's) with an added certificate in the design of pre- and post-natal exercise prescriptions as well as in nutrition and weight management. Helen’s Personal Training studio in Reigate invites mums to bring their baby whilst they work out with Helen. Clients turn up with their baby in their car seat and they usually sleep whilst mum works out. If they do wake up, Helen has a supply of toys to keep them amused or she’s happy to give them a cuddle. Clients can work with Helen individually, or in groups of two or three.
Helen is passionate about keeping fit both during and after pregnancy and makes it her aim to help mums reach their goals, be it weight loss, getting fitter, toning up or simply to start feeling good about themselves again. Animal Days Out
BOJNBM!EBZT!PVU We may be in for a cold winter, but if the kids are well dressed up you can have a great day out at animal farms and zoos, with a wide range of animals, large and small to see and sometimes hold. Nursery Education
Is a nursery the right choice for you? Studies show that attending nursery can increase a child's confidence, because it involves mixing with adults and children from outside the family group. It gives children social skills and experience from an early age of an environment outside the home. The nursery 'key worker' scheme, under which each child is allocated a special member of staff with whom they can bond, helps provide security. Healthy food and menus are another big plus of nursery provision. Staff are trained in what young children can do and when, so play and learning opportunities will be targetted appropriately. Nurseries work best for parents who have regular working hours: it’s not easy for staff to deal with erratic patterns of collection and drop-off. Nurseries offer long working days but are not as flexible as, say, a nanny or a childminder. On the other hand, they will only very rarely be closed at short notice - so they're more reliable than one carer who may be ill or have to cope with a sudden family emergency. But if you can fit around its opening hours, if your budget stretches to the fees, and if you like the idea of a social environment and a place with plenty of activities and trained carers, a nursery could be the place for your child and for you.
Staff-to-child ratio The government is currently considering cutting staff-to-child ratios in nurseries as a way of reducing what many see as unsustainable prices - but the move is controversial, and organisations such as the Preschool Learning Alliance are warning such a change could risk children's safety and well-being. Under current regulations, there must be one staff member for every three under-twos, and one for every four children aged two and three.
How to reduce nursery costs Most nurseries provide funded places for three-to-four year olds under the government free nursery education scheme. If your child is younger, check whether your employer can offer help towards your nursery costs through the childcare voucher scheme. See page 6-7 for more information.
How to choose the right nursery Start your nursery search well ahead of the time to give you confidence about your choice. Ask other parents' views and shortlist the nurseries that might work for you. Take geography into account, eg is it on

Read the most recent Ofsted inspection report and ask whether they have any awards for excellence. Be guided by your instincts; it’s a clichÊ – but see if the children look happy. Look at the indoor and outdoor play areas: are they pleasant, bright, welcoming, and do they seem safe? Ask about meals, how the food is prepared, and what time meals are served. What kinds of snacks are provided and how often are they available? Watch the children while they're playing, and pay attention to how much they're interacting with the staff. Do staff seem relaxed, fun to be around? Do they seem interested in your child and his/her likes/dislikes and interests? Ask about organised play sessions - weekly music groups, perhaps, or storytelling. Are there trips to the library, and to the park? How are these organised, and how often do they take place? Make sure you understand what the nursery charges and exactly what the fees include (for example, do they cover meals, nappies, outings). How many weeks a year is the nursery open? How are parents involved in the nursery, and are there opportunities for parents to meet up?
Webcams Some nurseries have webcams, which allow parents to see live images of their child at play from their desk at work. Some parents welcome this idea, others say they want their child's nursery to know they trust its workers, and worry that they'll be seen as a way of spying on care workers. For parents who are nervous about leaving their child a webcam provides reassurance, so they can soon resist the temptation to watch their child at play so much that they don’t get their work done!

Nursery Education
Nursery care for very young babies Many nurseries can take babies from 0-4months and this requires parents to be especially confident in the provision. No parent takes it lightly to entrust their tiny one to the care of another.
Emotional bonding A third of mums of under-threes say that they look predominantly for ‘social and educational opportunities’ in the care that they choose. However, a recent report by WATCh (What About The Children?) is calling on Ofsted to reflect the vital role a loving attachment plays in the mental, emotional and physical health of the under-threes. Advances in neuroscience have demonstrated the importance of key relationships in early life and the impact they have on future health and happiness. As Dr Pat Spungin, Director of WATCh, said: “An infant needs the person looking after them to care about them - not just for them.� This means that the importance of emotional bonding is every bit as great as the social and educational opportunities provided by the care setting. WATCh promotes the importance of secure
attachment in the early years and the vital role that loving care plays in brain development. Carers (and parents) who pick up cues from the baby, care for their feelings as well as their physical needs, reflect to the baby their understanding of the baby’s feelings and help ‘contain’ the baby’s overwhelming feelings to make them more manageable all help make the attachment secure.

Nursery Education youngest babies demonstrates that a key person is given special responsibilities for working with a small number of children, to give them reassurance to feel safe and cared for – as well as building a relationship with the baby’s parents. This is the expectation in the ‘Every Child Matters’ document. Ofsted inspection is expected to look into this aspect of care. From Nursery to Forest School by Kate Rice Bus Stop in Bookham – bringing kids into nature and nature into kids

“The forest school course has made an amazing difference to our group; it has opened our eyes to a fantastic way of teaching children about the world around them using nature’s resources.� As a pre-school we have always been an outdoor group and made regular woodland walks throughout the year in all weathers. When Surrey Early Years offered the opportunity for practitioners to train for the level 3 Forest Schools leader’s award, I applied and was accepted after writing a short piece on how forest schools training would benefit our group. The training consists of a two-day forest first aid course followed by a week of hands-on learning in the woods. Participants learn how to light fires safely and how to teach children to use adult tools like bow saws and hand drills, as well as den building. It’s a fantastic week; so much to learn! There is then a year profile building as you learn and practise new skills with the children and your team. Lots of help is available from the tutors. The highlight of the training is a two-night residential in the woods, where you sleep outdoors under a den built by yourself. An extract from my forest school diary November 2012: "Children arrive at Bus Stop for the morning session, within 30 minutes 18 children are dressed warmly, been to the toilet, safety jackets on and going out bag packed. Children choose their own walking partners and compete for the honour of walking with the leader. Walking line assembled, we’re off to the woods, stopping at the Polesden Lacey site map to plot
our route. We walk together in pairs through the public areas remembering to keep our partners safe and voices low. Off across the lawn to Admiral’s Walk and through the trees to Nursery Field. They race to reach the bottom gate first, only stopping to help each other up with whoops of delight. Through the gate, then kicking the leaves, squelching in the mud, stopping to climb trees and collect sticks for the fire . Our forest school site is in the heart of Free Hold woods where the trees have been coppiced and sticks and logs are plenty. Everyone arrives at the ‘fire square’ for our woodland welcome and then off to build wigwams and investigate rabbit holes. Kettle boiled on the open fire, hot chocolate ready, hungry den builders sit down for a snack. Then it’s time to wander back taking the long path over the stone bridge, up to Theatre lawn and back through visitor reception. There is just enough time to stop and check our route on the map to see where we have been. No tears, no moans - just wet, muddy, happy children and adults walking back for lunch. All this in just one morning. Autumn is so beautiful when you have the opportunity to walk on a carpet of golden brown beech leaves that lay stretched out before you with tall leafless tree trunks reaching up to the sky."

School choice for separated parents If you have children, you may already know how stressful it can be ensuring they win a place at the school you think suits them best. But what if you’ve recently separated and your partner does not agree with your choice? Having spoken to friends, scoured the league tables and visited several schools, you may be convinced School A is best. But then your former partner announces they’re equally convinced School B is a better choice. Specialist family lawyer Angela Moores confirms that, in the eyes of the law, all parents have a responsibility for their children’s welfare. “It doesn’t matter if you’re still married or not,� she said. “Parental responsibility remains and that means major decisions in a child’s life – including which school they attend – have to be made jointly.�
If parents are unable to agree upon a school, mediation can be a costeffective option because only one or two meetings may be needed to help them find a solution. A solicitor may be trained in mediation or work with a mediator, or you can find your local mediation service via NFM – National Family Mediation. If that is unsuccessful or unsuitable, one of the parents can apply for a Specific Issue Order under the Children Act 1989, for a court to resolve the dispute. A Specific Issue Order can address many disagreements between parents, such as whether their children should be christened or if they should undergo a certain medical procedure. The court makes a decision in the best interests of the child and, although both parents give their views, neither is given rights over the other.

What sort of holiday do you want? It’s always worth giving some thought to how you’d like to spend two weeks with your family. The children’s ages are likely to shape your plans: toddler heaven may not be the same as for the pre-teenage! It’s important to do your research into the wider area, too, so you know the scope for days out, rainy days and sunnier ones. But don’t over-plan. Try some of these ideas… Stay in a Mongolian yurt at Cwm Tawel. These large structures are lined with thick felt and have a waterproof canvas plus an extra cover – and sleep up to 5 people. For a super-active day, try canyoning with Adventure Britain in the rivers and waterfalls around Ystradfellte on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons! Slide down rapids, float down fastflowing chutes and waves, jump off 20ft waterfalls… Buoyancy aids, wet suit and helmet are provided. And treat yourself to a stop-off at Blaenarvon’s Big Pit: National Mining Museum, its heritage railway and the relics of its industrial past. As well as the countryside activities, the Heritage Centre will give you a glimpse of the industrial history that Blaenarvon owes to the Iron and Coal industries.
