Volunteer Cave Guides needed! Dorking’s famous South Street Caves are about to re-open and Dorking Museum is looking for volunteers to become a Cave Tour Guide. You will be given training covering the geology, history and social myths and legends of the caves. You will also be first-aid trained. The 40-minute tours run from May to October. Guides will be on a rota, so attendance can be on an ad hoc basis as convenient. No previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm! In fact, if the 83,000 tonnes of food thrown away in Surrey each year was collected from caddies, it would generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes for a year, and fertilise enough wheat to bake 16 million loaves of bread. The food waste is then transformed into green energy and fertiliser by anaerobic digestion. If food waste is thrown out with general waste it’s not only bad for the environment, it also costs Surrey taxpayers millions in waste disposal charges every year. SmarterInvestment is based on the same technology, much of which has never been readily available to consumers before. Business is booming for home births New guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have confirmed that homebirths and midwife-led centres are ‘best for many mothers’. The College of Midwives is calling for more midwife-led units to be set up across the country so that all mothers-to-be can have the choice of a midwife-led or home birth. Many women are turning to independent midwives to get the birth and continuity of care they want, either at hospital or at home, and hiring a fully qualified midwife who works outside of the NHS to oversee everything. Shared Parental Leave – starts April 5th! Shared Parental Leave will enable eligible mothers, fathers, partners and adopters to choose how to share time off work after their child is born or placed for adoption. This could mean that the mother or adopter shares some of the leave with her partner, perhaps returning to work for part of the time and then resuming leave at a later date. The regulations came into force on 1 December 2014. The options to use the new Shared Parental Leave rights will apply for eligible employed parents where a baby is due to be born on or after 5th April 2015, or for children who are placed for adoption on or after that date. What is Specific Language Impairment (SLI)? Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a diagnostic medical term that includes a range of speech and language disabilities. Children with SLI have enormous difficulty talking, pronouncing words and sometimes understanding language. Since taking over the reins last September as Head of Downsend School Pre-Prep Epsom, Sarah Bradley has created a woodland and nature school and is developing a woodland garden. As an experienced Headteacher, she has noticed that as the children have spent time outside measuring rainfall, sorting leaves by colour and shape and harvesting pumpkin seeds from their summer crop, their language and vocabulary has grown and their imagination has developed. Bluebell Walks Look out for the delicate heads of English bluebells emerging in copses, clearings and under the canopies of trees in April. More than half the world’s bluebells are here, in the UK. Found especially in ancient and natural woodland, The National Trust has a wide range of bluebell woods. You will find carpets of bluebells at: Standen and Sheffield Park in Sussex; Emmetts Garden and Sissinghurst in Kent. In Surrey, the best known bluebell walks are at Hatchlands Park and Winkworth Arboretum, also at Limpsfield Common and Gatton Park. I’ve seen the bluebells coming up already on Ranmore Common next to Polesden Lacey – but you may have to explore the woods to find them!
