As you can see from the Cowpie and the Blindley Heath Country Shows below, the Show season has (nearly) arrived. Before that we’ve got all the fun of Easter, with those lovely egg hunts (see page 10). Easter school holidays take us almost to the end of April, making this a great time to take a short break (see page 11). And with the Royal Wedding on 29 April giving us another Bank Holiday and a very long weekend, April really is the ‘holiday month’. Our Holiday Camps and Courses pages are growing like Topsy (pages 22-23). As for March? Many of the great places to visit start their seasons now and with the clocks going forward on 27 March it feels as if there is more time for having fun. Don’t let anyone forget that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, 3 April. I’ll be making the peppermint creams recipe on page 5, courtesy of Cookies Kitchen. Have fun this spring! Dorking Craft Fair Launched With more people starting their own small businesses designing and creating products, craft fairs provide a place to meet the public and showcase their product. At the same time people can source local, handmade goods not available elsewhere and often at very competitive prices. Kirstin Wood set up the Reigate Craft and Gift Fair just over a year ago in Somers (scout) Hall near the Red Cross pub in Reigate. It runs on the first Saturday of the month, 10am-4pm, with free admission and Reigate Cakes providing a welcome stop for coffee. Kirstin’s second fair is a new venture in Dorking, the Dorking Craft & Gift Fair, held in Dorking Halls on the third Sunday of each month, 9.30am till 4.30pm. DORKING CHARITY HELPS CHILDREN OF DARFUR Kids for Kids was founded 10 years ago by Patricia Parker MBE to help bring water and food to children in Darfur, Sudan. After the drought of the last 12 months every child in every village is malnourished, meaning the risk of fatal chest infections is ever-present. Patricia, who is based in Dorking, is hoping that local schools and churches might help by adopting KIDS FOR KIDS as their charity.
SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT TO DARFUR “We began by digging handpumps,” said Patricia, “and lending families 6 goats for 2 years. This simple loan has a dramatic effect on the health of the children because they have milk every day. Our goats provide mothers with a livelihood, which enables them to take control of their own lives. New Merebank Playground Opens The brand new play areas at Merebank Recreation Ground in Beare Green opened in February, with an official launch taking place in March. The new facilities, which feature an aerial runway and a tower with a tube slide, are designed for local children under 14.
Breath of Life, April 2011 Every year up to 150,000 people in England and Wales die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. Learn to save a life. St John Ambulance is holding its annual Breath of Life first aid training day in Surrey for the public on April 2, 10am-3pm. The 30-minute free drop-in training sessions will be held across Surrey – including Caterham, Dorking, Epsom, Horley, Leatherhead and Reigate. Learn how to assess casualties; put them in the recovery position; clear their airway and administer chest compressions and the breath of life.

Local News Channel Surrey challenges stereotype of young people Channel Surrey is a new online television channel, launched to challenge negative stereotypes of young people. It came about as a response to research from Surrey’s youth development service, which indicated that two-thirds of adults surveyed thought young people were primarily responsible for anti-social behaviour. In fact police statistics tell a different story; the vast majority of arrests and cautions for antisocial behaviour involve adults, not children and young people. Channel Surrey has recruited a team of volunteer reporters - both older and younger - to present community news reports online on a range of subjects, including young people teaching older people about new technology, raising funds for Cambodian orphans, exploring musical and artistic talents, caring for the environment and turning graffiti into art. £3.4m Donyngs Leisure Centre Refurb Starts A major refurbishment of Donyngs Recreation Centre in Redhill costing £3.4 million is now underway. The work will include an enlarged air conditioned gym, opening in the spring, a ‘Kids Gym’ for 11 to 16 year olds, a purpose built children’s play facility, an enlarged dance/ fitness studio, a range of new treatment rooms and
A new soft play area will replace the old gym to provide a safe, exciting and challenging environment for children under seven years old. Councillor Adam De Save, Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “The new children’s gym and soft play facility will make Donyngs a centre the whole family can use and enjoy. We hope the new Kids Gym will encourage those young people who are less interested in traditional sports to get active.”
Arts Alive Festival Grows and Grows Figures just in from last year’s Arts Alive! Festival in the Mole Valley show that 120 events organised by local arts groups and artists had wide appeal: over 18,000 people attended one or more events.

A TREAT FOR MOTHER’S DAY! SUNDAY APRIL 3RD Cookies’ Mother’s Day Surprise Peppermint Sweeties Makes about 20. Takes about 20 minutes plus setting time. No cooking required.
Ingredients: 225g sifted icing sugar, ½ egg white, mixed from dried egg white, ¼ -½ tsp peppermint flavouring (depending on brand/strength), 1½ tsp lemon juice, a few drops of water, food colouring – red or green if you want really traditional peppermints , small heart shaped cutters
Method: Place the sifted icing into a large bowl and make a hole in the centre with a spoon. Mix the egg white, peppermint and lemon juice together and pour into the large bowl. Mix together with a blunt knife and then use your hands to make a smooth dough. Add a few very small drops (try one drop and check colour then add more for deeper colour) of the food colouring to the dough, using your fingers to combine it. Add a little more sifted icing sugar if it is a little sticky. Sprinkle icing sugar on to a clean surface and use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to about ½ cm thickness. Use the heart cutters to cut out hearts and transfer them to a baking sheet with a pallet/blunt knife. Leave the peppermints in a cool place to set. They make a lovely present, placed inside a gift box with a bed of tissue paper. Don’t forget the card too! Thanks to Maxine Pancaldi of Cookies Kitchen for this simple Mother’s Day idea. The NCT now offers a Postnatal Line, staffed by qualified NCT Postnatal Leaders who offer support and information to new parents. They are skilled in providing a listening ear as well as support and information on concerns from baby routines to body image after birth. The helpline number is 0300 330 0773, open 9am – 1pm Monday – Friday. Calls are charged at local rates.
Ante-natal education – Fair deal or raw deal for future parents? In spite of new Government vision for maternity services, many primary care trusts have reduced the number and length of NHS ante-natal classes, ignoring significant international research regarding the benefits of teaching emotional support techniques to parents-to-be. This has created a postcode lottery in antenatal education which looks set to continue. The good news is that Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS trust (www.surreyandsussex.nhs.uk/) still offers a day’s session for each expectant mum, often based in local children’s centres. All expectant mums are invited to these classes. The classes provide lots of very practical advice about the process of birth and about the hospital experience. NCT classes are also available to mums and local classes can easily be found either via the website (www.nct.org.uk) or by calling the Parent Services Advisors for our local area: Alison Tierney for Caterham and Oxted, on 0844 243 6915 and Claire Brooke-Wilson for Leatherhead, Dorking, Reigate, Redhill and Horley on 0844 243 6916. Other ante-natal classes are available, too, offering simple tools and techniques that can be self taught to help prepare parents-to-be emotionally as well as physically for the birth ahead. A technique that is growing in popularity is hypnotherapy, reported to help in a number of ways including decreasing pain during labour, overcoming fears, relaxing during pregnancy and generally helping parents-to-be to prepare fully for the forthcoming birth. Research indicates that this preparation can lead to fewer epidurals and Caesarian births. Natal Hypnotherapy was founded in 2001 by Clinical Hypnotherapist and doula, Maggie Howell (d. Hyp. C. Babies and Toddlers Periods and pregnancy matters - with Maya abdominal massage Abdominal massage is a traditional treatment developed by Rosita Arvigo from the ancient Maya massage techniques of Central America. The massage helps eliminate a wide range of digestive problems and medical conditions. It has been used with particular success for problems associated with women’s reproductive organs. This abdominal massage treats the reproductive and digestive systems by applying external pressure to internal organs, using only the practitioner’s hands. This guides and helps reposition the organs, improving blood flow to the lower and upper abdomen. The muscles of the stomach and diaphragm can become overly tight due to anxiety, worry and fear. This affects breathing and constricts the blood vessels and nerves that give the digestive organs their vitality. When these areas are tight and blocked not only is blood restricted to the digestive organs but it limits our capacity to let go of tension. The massage will alleviate this discomfort, with positive effects on the digestion. And by working on the upper abdomen and solar plexus we also facilitate emotional release.
Helping the fertility process using Arvigo techniques To have painless and positive healthy cycles the uterus needs to be in its normal position, with a good flow of blood and our hormones in balance. The uterus is held in place by ligaments that allow it to double in size during menstruation and expand much more during pregnancy. These ligaments can become over-stretched for a variety of reasons, allowing the uterus to twist, fold, tilt or become badly positioned. When a uterus is out of position the blood and lymph flow to the pelvic area is affected. For example if the uterus is folded, the blood and uterine lining are unable to expel completely during menstruation so causing discomfort. Self Care An important part of this work is taught as self care. The practitioner will teach the client a simple massage to be carried out each day taking about 10 minutes. Through the regular repetition of the massage ligaments are able to heal and support the uterus. Through the massage the client is taking responsibility for her own health and nurturing herself at a fundamental level to complete the healing process. Abdominal massage is a soothing experience. The sun can pay your electricity bills! Since April 2010 a government scheme to encourage
solar panel installation means that families can actually make money from producing electricity from solar panels!
Solar panels have been popping up on UK roofs for the last 30 years. Environmentally conscious people, aware of the need to stop using fossil fuels (ie coal), have been keen to use this free, alternative source of electricity. There have even been grants to cover a portion of the installation costs. The phrase ‘microgeneration of electricity’ refers to electricity produced on your own roof top. The good news is that for every unit of electricity you make from your solar panels, the government will currently pay you 41.3p. What’s more, this is paid to you even when you use the electricity at home! The introduction of the ‘feed-in tariff’ in April 2010 has made this green technology a profitable investment. This unit rate of 41.3p will be paid for a guaranteed period of twenty-five years from installation and is index-linked to inflation. But these rates won’t last for ever: they are due to fall for installations completed after March 2012.
COSTS AND BENEFITS An average household typically uses about 3,300 kWh (units) a year. At 13p per unit this costs £429. A typical installation for a family house costs around £9,000 and will provide approximately 2,000 units (or kWh) of electricity each year, giving you an income of over £800 plus about £200 savings on your electricity bill. Larger systems provide even greater returns due to the efficiencies of scale. The feed-in tariff is a tax-free payment. Furthermore the value of the property is likely to increase because of the built-in income stream.
How do I find a good supplier? The best way to find a reliable company to install your panels is by visiting the website of the organisation that certifies microgeneration suppliers at www. microgenerationcertifcation.org and click on the ‘Consumer’ button. Put in your postcode to find your local companies. All these certified companies can use the initials MCS after their name. What happens next? An initial meeting normally takes about one hour to discuss all the homeowner’s queries and to measure and assess the intended location for the panels. From the quotation to the installation can be as little as three weeks. The installation process is relatively simple, with the majority of the work being done on the roof and in the loft space. A team of specialist engineers can complete a typical installation in one day. One cable is run from the ‘inverter’ (which converts the electricity to the normal domestic supply of 230v) in the loft to the main consumer unit (fuse box) work within the property.

SOLAR MYTH BUSTERS • Solar panels do not require a due south facing roof to generate power. A west-facing roof can generate 80% of the power of a due south-facing roof. • The panels will generate power all year-round, including overcast winter days. Obviously the system will be most productive during periods of bright sunshine. • The installation of a roof-mounted photovoltaic system does not normally require planning permission for domestic properties. The exceptions to this are for listed properties, national parks, etc. • Landlords can receive the feed-in tariff from installations on rental properties.

Families 2011 Census to count babies and preschool children Babies born this March will hold the honour of being among the youngest people added to the 2011 Census. These census statistics help calculate future needs for services - from schools and hospitals to supplies such as having enough nappies in your local supermarket! It’s important to make sure all babies and preschool children are included on your questionnaire, so the services the need are built to help them. The census is a once-a-decade event, run by the Office for National Statistics. It affects everyone in England and Wales. In March 2011 a white envelope with a purple C emblazoned on it will drop through your letterbox. Inside will be a questionnaire which can be completed online (through the census website www. census.gov.uk), or on paper. Census statistics are used as the cornerstone for planning our communities. Mothers and babies in hospital on census day, March 27th, should be included on the questionnaire where they usually live (or will usually live in the baby’s case), not at the hospital. So, Dad will have to remember to include them!

Childcare Vouchers Childcare Vouchers are a great employee benefit yet many businesses haven’t found the time to get a scheme in place. With the Government planning to reduce the level of tax relief on Childcare Vouchers for higher and additional rate tax-payers who sign up after 6th April 2011, now is the perfect time for employers to register with one of the schemes. By doing this they can beat the April deadline and be eligible for this year’s savings of £1,196 into the next tax year and beyond. If you sign up to a scheme on or after 6 April you will see your potential tax and NI savings drop to just over £600 a year. For parents, check if your employer runs the scheme. A higher (40%) or additional (50%) rate tax-payer joining a Childcare Voucher scheme would only receive income tax relief at the same rate as a basic (20%) rate tax-payer if joining after April 6th. One Space, www.onespace.org.uk , the popular social networking site for single parents from Single Parent Action Network (SPAN), has recently launched a series of free online learning and self-development courses to help single parents build self esteem and move forward in their lives. Self Development is unavailable to most single parents owing to lack of time and money. One Space is taking free interactive online learning and self-development courses directly into the homes of single parents across the country. Available 24 hours a day, the courses are fun and easy to follow and tailored to allow parents to fit self-development around family commitments, working at their own pace. The free online courses build self-esteem and improve the key skills necessary for success in today’s challenging labour market. Modules include: ‘Life Coaching’, to build self-esteem, ‘Dealing with Stress’ and ‘Assertiveness’ Another module,‘Ways to Work’ shows single parents how to improve their employability and create a compelling CV. Mini-meditation sessions for tinies at St Teresa’s
Moor House School is a specialist, co-educational school for students aged 7-16 yrs with speech and language impairments. Organised by Surrey County Council and partners, the School Games will be starting on 15 March and involve up to 4,000 children competing in over 30 events, providing an opportunity for young people from across the county to compete in a range of Olympic and nonOlympic sports. While most of the events are at secondary level, Year 5 & 6 will compete in finals such as Athletics, Netball and Cricket. The School Games will bring together all the Surrey County finals into one programme that is set to raise the quality and profile of sporting competitions in Surrey. This will also ensure that Surrey school kids are well placed to compete for national titles in 2012 at the National School Games. The other big event to encourage participation in sport is the P&G Surrey Youth Games, taking place in Guilford 18-19 June. The games give young people aged 7 - 15 the opportunity to take part in free coaching sessions led by the best coaches in the borough. For more information visit www.surrey2012.info
Education Carbon Detectives save waste in schools Over 6000 primary and secondary schools are currently registered with the Carbon Detectives programme, a Europe-wide project operated in the UK by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The programme is designed for 8-14 yr olds and aims to engage pupils and teachers in activities that can not only help schools become more sustainable and lower their carbon footprint, but also assist with the delivery of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within the curriculum. If you think your pupils have what it takes to be Carbon Detectives then simply register at www.carbondetectiveseurope.org. Singing and spelling fun at the Hawthorns The first ever Hawthorns Spelling Bee took place recently at The Hawthorns School, Bletchingley. Entrants were in the Junior (Years 5 & 6) or Senior (Years 7 & 8) sections. The finalists had to spell aloud a range of words selected from a prescribed list given to them a few days in advance of the final. Guy Appleby won a close battle in the Junior section just pipping Aaron Gilchrist to the title by spelling ‘hieroglyphic’ correctly. In the Senior section, Jonathan Pollard defeated Oscar McNab in ‘sudden death’by spelling ‘psychology’correctly. Congratulations also to Opal Weaver, Beth Challis and Olivia Chesser, all aged 12 years, of The Hawthorns School. They have been selected for the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain after preparing their aural and sight singing and a piece for performance at the London audition.
Another ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED report at Downsend School Ashtead Lodge, one of Downsend School’s three Nursery and Pre-Preparatory Departments has just received ‘Outstanding’ in every single category following an Ofsted inspection at the end of last term. This latest inspection noted that the Lodge had ‘maintained its high quality provision since the last inspection’ (2007), also rated ‘Outstanding’, and focused principally on the quality of education provided by the school; its provision for the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development; the arrangements for safeguarding pupils and the improvements the school has made since its last inspection.
