A VISION FOR THE FUTU rE

Dr Kingsley Marshall: Moving film forward

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the future of filmmaking – a challenge and opportunity that fascinates Dr Kingsley Marshall, Head of the School of Film & Television at Falmouth University. He has led groundbreaking research into AI tools for screen creatives, working with Oxford AI company Charismatic and UK partners including Channel 4 and Aardman. Kingsley is also developing a documentary, NEVERMADE, which uses the very technology he’s exploring. “The biggest challenge lies where tech meets creativity,” he explains. “These tools offer new possibilities, but, like every wave of innovation, it’s how filmmakers apply them that will shape their impact.

“Filmmaking is thriving across drama, documentary, animation and experimental work,” he adds. “Emerging tech offers us new ways to tell and make stories and reach audiences. Falmouth is at the cutting edge of established and emerging screen media. As a student at Falmouth, you’ll be hands-on from day one, working alongside expert staff and our industry collaborators to develop your voice and skills – from celluloid to digital technologies and beyond.

“AI is just a tool, like a camera, microphones, a dubbing stage or the software we use for editing and visual effects,” Kingsley adds. “Filmmaking comes down to hard work and imagination, realising great stories through collaborating with others who are skilled in their craft. At Falmouth, our studios are buzzing with creativity – students, staff, grads, production companies and international partners all working together. We’re here to help students find their voice and give them the tools and confidence to use it.”

AHEAD OF THE GaME

Dr Daniel Zhang:

Games tech for the common good

The world of games and computing is evolving at an extraordinary pace, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning. “We’re seeing game narratives reshaped by large language models and ever more dynamic and immersive environments created with procedural content generation,” says Dr Daniel Zhang, a senior lecturer in AI and ML. “Augmented, virtual and extended realities are further pushing the boundaries of player engagement through gesture and voice control. The possibilities are limitless.”

Exciting times, but what makes Falmouth University a leader in game development education and industry collaboration? Daniel explains: “We integrate the latest innovations into our curriculum and research but also foster real-world applications. As a student here, you’ll gain hands-on experience in game design and development, working with AI-driven tools and exploring the application of the latest machine learning models in real-time human identification, object detection, goal-oriented navigation, reinforcement learning and chatbot personality injection. These fast-evolving fields present both opportunities and challenges, but we equip students with the skills, knowledge and ethical awareness to navigate this dynamic landscape.

“While gaming is often seen as entertainment, it also holds powerful potential for social impact,” says Daniel. “We champion the development of serious games – tools that support education, healthcare and social awareness. Our students are creating interactive experiences that tackle issues like mental health and wellbeing, proving that games can be a force for good. At Falmouth, we’re committed to leading these innovations, opening new paths for creativity and problem-solving.”

EMBRACING I n NOVATION

Dr Natalie Semley: A new era for experience design

“We’re only limited by our imagination – and that’s exciting when you’re based at a creative institution such as Falmouth,” says Dr Natalie Semley of the potential for technological development within tourism and experience design. “The University is embracing a host of emerging innovations. We’re well placed to harness creativity and seek sustainable solutions to local, regional and global issues.”

Natalie, a senior lecturer in sustainable tourism, festival and creative events management, utilised GPS-led technology to enable a data-driven evaluation – the first of its kind in Cornwall – to determine the value of digital storytelling to the coastal town of Newquay. She has also been inspired by projects using haptic technology to enhance live music experiences for d/Deaf, disabled and neurodiverse audiences – an initiative based in the University’s business school. “We’re focused on designing inclusive, meaningful experiences,” she explains. “Through partnerships with community organisations, tech developers and entrepreneurs, we’re actively researching solutions that drive positive change.

“Developments such as AI-powered holograms can take our experiences to a new level, through storytelling and cultural immersion, as well as streamlining operations and overcoming industry issues such as labour supply,” she adds. “Then there are products that influence customers ergonomically – ‘super apps’ that do everything, such as booking and organising, based on our behaviour. There are concerns about potential impact with every new innovation, but that’s what makes it so interesting. The only constant is change, so we roll with the challenges, ask wicked questions and discuss concerns to fine-tune our actions and ideas.”

REFRAMING CREATiVITY

Professor

Expanding horizons in art

Technology is changing the way audiences see and engage with creative work, through AI-generated art, immersive installations and extended reality environments. Researchers at Falmouth are using the University’s pioneering Centre for Blended Realities to explore the evolving relationship between digital tools and creative expression. According to Professor Lee Miller, Head of Postgraduate Research, we’re at a point of transformation. How can artists navigate the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead?

“This is a moment to question, design and reimagine the future of creative work,” says Lee. “These emerging technologies are more than mere tools or utilities; they raise new issues about authorship, presence and participation. Students have the power to shape how technology is used and understood, influencing the direction of the creative industries. At Falmouth, we’re agile and bold; we approach new technologies as creative provocations, with both staff and students actively exploring their potential and limits.”

Although technology is advancing rapidly, Lee emphasises that the essence of creative practice is to maintain curiosity, seek exciting collaborations and above all offer critique. “As a university, we support experimentation, especially in areas where traditional craft, digital innovation and critical thinking can intersect,” he says. “We’ll encourage you to explore how technology might extend your practice and give you the tools to reflect critically on its impact. Many of the most compelling developments today come from artists and makers who begin with traditional techniques and bring them into dialogue with new tools or contexts.”

INVEST IN YOUR FU tURE

If you’re curious about your chosen field, keen to realise your career potential and eager to stretch yourself academically and creatively, there are many reasons why postgraduate taught study could be for you.

Accelerated progress

A relevant master’s degree may give you a significant advantage over candidates with a bachelor’s (BA or BSc) degree, whether you’re looking for a new job or aiming for promotion. Alongside enhanced skills and expertise, postgraduate taught study will equip you with a soughtafter range of abilities and indicates that you’re motivated, focused and able to work independently.

The confidence you’ll gain from completing a master’s degree could be especially useful if you’re returning to work after a career break or aiming for a more senior role. As an international student, a qualification at this level is an endorsement of your capabilities.

A new career path

Are you keen to change direction within your industry – or dreaming of a different career entirely but don’t know where to start? A master’s degree can unlock exciting possibilities, enabling you to redefine your future in a new area and providing you with technical skills and insight that can be applied directly in the workplace.

While the obvious route into higher education is to follow your specialism, another option is to enhance your existing qualification by pursuing a new or unrelated subject at postgraduate level. Combining certain subjects – following a Fine Art BA(Hons) with a Film & Television MA, for example, or bolting master’s-level business skills onto a creative bachelor's degree – can open up a world of opportunities.

Professional accreditation

Studying a master’s degree that’s recognised and accredited by a professional body can bring additional benefits, providing a vital head start or enhanced prospects in a competitive industry. Look out for our courses offering industry accreditation.

Advanced knowledge

Perhaps you’re looking to gain specialist skills, building on an existing knowledge base and deepening your understanding to stand out in your sector. At postgraduate level you’ll delve deeper, as you engage with complex topics and apply theoretical learning and innovative approaches to tackle problems. With support from professional staff and supervisors, postgraduate taught study could set you on the road to becoming an expert in your own right.

DEGREE OPTIONS E xPLAINED MASTER’S

Recognised by employers worldwide, a master’s degree – also known as a postgraduate taught degree – can give you an edge over other candidates in your chosen career. A qualification at this level demonstrates that you’re self-motivated, able to commit to creating an advanced body of work and have a deeper understanding of your discipline. It’s also a stepping stone towards a research degree if you’re interested in pursuing a career in academia.

PGDIP

A PGDip (postgraduate diploma) is a shorter postgraduate taught degree option that includes challenging master’s-level content but without the dissertation or major project. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a flexible course that offers career progression while juggling other commitments, such as work or family. Most online courses at Falmouth are available as a PGDip as well as a master’s.

Our A-Z of master’s degrees and PGDips begins on page 22.

RESEARCH

A research degree, such as a PhD or an MPhil, is an advanced postgraduate research study programme that gives you an opportunity to explore a topic of your choice. It allows you to conduct your own research and develop knowledge and expertise to help produce innovative solutions to the challenges faced by society, today and in the future.

Explore our research degree options on page 76.

Research opportunities

A postgraduate taught degree can serve as a pathway to a postgraduate research degree, which allows you to take an in-depth look at an area of specific interest – giving you the skills to dig beneath the surface of published opinion and accepted wisdom to generate knowledge in the field.

The ability to cast a critical eye and draw new conclusions is powerful and in demand. Asking the right questions, choosing methods of enquiry and sifting through facts, events and contributions all serve to sharpen creativity.

Total immersion

Would you like to learn more about a subject that has always interested you but you’ve never had time to pursue it? Through postgraduate taught study you can follow your passion among likeminded peers, whether you’re on campus or online, tapping into Falmouth’s expertise to master your field.

Extended network

By joining our collaborative community of talented thinkers, makers and researchers, you’ll be ideally positioned to share ideas, resources and contacts. Through Falmouth’s industry links and partnerships, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with and benefit from some of the UK’s most influential creative players – developing a professional network that will serve you through graduation and beyond.

Creative inspiration

Whatever stage you’re at, the chance to cultivate new ideas and approaches can boost professional development. Perhaps you’ve lost career momentum and need to extend your practice and explore new themes, skill sets and ways of working, or maybe you’d like to stay up to date with academic developments. Spending time in a stimulating, research-active community that nurtures innovation, collaboration and enterprise will keep you at the cutting edge.

kING WAI TAI

Graduate, Communication Design MA

It was while studying financial journalism that King Wai Tai discovered an interest in communicating messages beyond the means of words, using methods such as graphic elements, flow of content, icons and symbols. After exploring graphic design as a marketing administrator, he stepped back into higher education on Falmouth University’s Communication Design MA.

King Wai won an International Society of Typographic Designers award for his book Binaural and a D&AD wood pencil for the collaborative project Behind the Bank, an interactive digital billboard campaign for HSBC inspired by Chinese opera makeup. “The initial lectures and workshops helped me understand why I was interested in topics that initially seemed random,” recalls King Wai, who was encouraged to ‘deconstruct’ his personal design identity before reconstructing and reinventing the creative process. “I concluded that I liked culturally related topics, whether about politics, lifestyle or the culture itself. The awards were a huge confidence boost and an approval of my skills and ideas.

“My final major project directed me to the world of 3D graphics, combined with typography, photography and many more design routes,” he adds. “The multidisciplinary practice allowed me to tackle problems from different angles and perspectives. I’m proud to have had the opportunity to explore my creative self and be equipped with such a broad range of design capabilities.”

It was after working as a surf instructor in Thailand that Kate developed Rad Wax, an eco surf wax made with sustainably sourced plant waxes and repurposed natural byproducts. While she was aware of the huge potential of the planet-friendly, high-performance alternative, she was unsure how to successfully take the product to the international surfing market.

Falmouth University’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management MSc proved pivotal. “The course was practical, hands- on and designed to create real “It gave me clarity on strategy, direction and next steps and really helped focus the future of Rad Wax. The structured learning, mentor support and access to resources were hugely valuable.

“Returning to education can feel daunting, but the support at Falmouth was fantastic,” adds Kate, who grew up in Cornwall and was keen to study close to home where she could make local contacts and benefit from in-person coaching. “Being surrounded by other entrepreneurs and business-minded people created a genuine sense of community. RObERT COLLINSON

Graduate, Fine Art MA (Online)

“Applying to Falmouth felt like stepping into a different space to explore new dynamics, new energy,” says Robert Collinson, who enrolled on Falmouth’s Fine Art MA (Online) in 2023. “My artistic practice has always been rooted in a particular place, so the opportunity to remain physically present in Taiwan while engaging in such a deep and challenging programme was perfect.

“For me, the course was like taking a road trip with a group of wise beings through the deserts and verdant forests of the heart,” he continues. “At times, I hesitated to fully commit to making the work I knew, deep down, I needed to, yet it can feel exhilarating to stand at the edge of the abyss and step off into creative flight.” That leap became Weaving Belonging, a project spanning the UK and Taiwan. Robert explains: “I retraced my great grandad’s journey when he walked out of the deep Durham hills to Chopwell, Tyne and Wear, in search of work in the coal mines. I went with three generations of my own family, collecting and weaving wildflowers into an offering basket in honour and memory of my ancestors.

“Being an artist can mean so many different things. I feel fortunate to have been able to sit, as it were, by the fire, listening, contributing and reflecting while working out what that means for me. Falmouth really centred me in the importance of community and collaboration – something I'll continue to nourish and grow as I move forward. The work is real and can be challenging, but there's a bunch of radiant souls standing by your side.”

PhIL ROEDER

Graduate, Photography MA (Online)

“It’s never too late to begin… or begin again,” says Phil Roeder, whose interest in visual storytelling developed through working alongside photographers during a career in communications and public affairs. “It wasn’t until I was in my early forties that I moved beyond family snapshots and holiday images and began to take the medium seriously as a form of creative expression.”

After completing a bachelor’s degree in photography online through Arizona State University, doing so from his hometown Des Moines, Iowa, Phil started to explore postgraduate options. “I wanted to build on that foundation and momentum,” he says. “Falmouth’s online Photography MA stood out with its compelling combination of academic rigour, creative focus and flexibility. One of the greatest advantages was the ability to pursue postgraduate study while continuing my professional career. Beyond that, I found the level of engagement with both tutors and fellow students to be thoughtful, constructive and genuinely collaborative.

“The MA provided the space – and, crucially, the critical framework – to continue developing my work,” adds Phil, who graduated in 2025. “I’d already started Bottom of the Driftless, a study exploring the generational history of a 160-year-old homestead and its surroundings in a fascinating and often overlooked part of the American Midwest. Through ongoing feedback from tutors and peers, I was able to experiment, take risks and refine both the visual language and narrative structure of the project. My time at Falmouth has made me a more deliberate and reflective photographer; I now approach my work with greater intention and confidence, and with a clearer sense of purpose as I pursue exhibitions, publications and new projects.”

MILLSON

Graduate, Writing for Script & Screen MA (Online)

Accustomed to life in front of the camera as an accomplished film and television actor, Joseph Millson grew increasingly curious about what happens behind it. “I’ve always written, but the idea of harnessing screenwriting in a professional way was an itch I had to scratch,” he says. “I wanted to understand the bones of it, to build a scaffolding for my work and to be able to write even when not feeling ‘inspired’. I wanted to learn everything and try every tool.”

Falmouth’s renowned online Writing for Script & Screen MA caught his attention – and kickstarted his screenwriting career. “I developed my feature film Signs Of Life as my final project for the course and, nine drafts later, it became a living, breathing film with cinema release and global digital distribution,” says Joseph, who made the award-winning Lanzarote-based drama on a tiny budget just a year after graduating in 2024. “Thanks to the strength of the script, we were able to secure an extraordinary cast and crew.

“I’m now in pre production on my second feature as writer/ director and I’m busy writing several episodes of a big docu-drama for FOX nation in the USA,” he adds. “The ‘story structure’ classes on the MA helped me write my first novella, Miller Rose Roberts, which will be published later this year. I honestly loved every part of the course, but it was always the toughest sections that ended up yielding the most fruit. I wasn’t much of a student when I was younger, but postgraduate study proved to be a brilliant, edifying decision – especially later in life.”

OUR RESEaRCH CENTRES

Falmouth has four research centres, each providing a rich and supportive environment for generating and exploring new avenues of enquiry.

BLENDED REALITIES

Innovation in the arts combines with cutting-edge computer science as researchers investigate the astonishing ways in which immersive technologies are reshaping audience engagement, product design and screen practices. Our Centre for Blended Realities, boosted by a £7 million Expanding Excellence in England (E3) Research England fund award, is home to projects including GWITHA, which aims to redefine the capture and archive of performance practice, and the Varyon VR virtual theatre space.

ARTS & HEALTH

The potential of art, science, technology and entrepreneurship to contribute to the wellbeing of individuals and communities is the focus at our Centre for Arts & Health, which aims to represent the unseen and unheard – reaching into the communities frequently without voice. Projects include ATTUNE, a participatory arts-based exploration of young people’s mental health following adverse childhood experiences.

PEDAGOGY FUTURES

With the University’s wealth of experience in creative pedagogy, this research centre seeks to imagine new ways of teaching that preserve and progress the contribution of arts and humanities to society. Our Sound/Image Cinema Lab brings together our expertise in higher education teaching and research with exceptional industry connections to deliver original, exciting and award-winning professional filmmaking in Cornwall.

HERITAGE, CULTURE & SOCIETY

Our relationships with past, present and future cultural places and landscapes take centre stage at this interdisciplinary research centre. Working with the cultural sector in Cornwall and further afield across Europe, researchers are using the lens of social justice and sustainability to explore ways to ensure that the benefits of engaging with cultural heritage can be accessed, experienced and enjoyed by all.

AlAN CONTEH

“I first encountered Falmouth’s PhD programme during my Photography MA but initially dismissed it – I didn’t see myself as ‘academic’ and questioned whether photography needed formal research,” says Alan Conteh, whose PhD seeks to explore the relationship between photographic narratives and the perception of air pollution in London. “That changed during my MA project Up In Smoke, which investigated a local waste incinerator. The lack of transparency revealed how ecological threats often hide in plain sight, prompting deeper questions about photography’s role in environmental discourse.

“Falmouth has been central to my journey, from a BA in Photography to an MA and now the PhD. Previously a self-taught fashion photographer, I sought growth and found it through academic study. The shift to environmental photography was challenging but transformative, supported by Falmouth’s emphasis on experimentation and student-centred learning. I gained confidence, began leading peer groups and expanded my professional networks.

“Looking ahead, I aim to publish, exhibit and teach, especially within underrepresented communities, using photography to shape public consciousness around ecological issues. My advice? Start with a question you can’t let go of. A research degree is not only an academic process; it’s also deeply personal.”

ENTRY RE qUIREMENTS

At Falmouth, we assess every applicant on individual merit. We’re looking for students who can demonstrate enthusiasm and potential to succeed in their chosen subject, so we’ll consider a range of qualifications and relevant experience.

We welcome applications for both on-campus and online master’s degrees from those with relevant Level 6 qualifications, or relevant equivalent experience, and a demonstrable interest in their subject. Typical applicants hold an undergraduate degree of 2:2 or above. Please check our website for specific course requirements.

We’ll also welcome your application if you have formal or ‘certified’ learning (such as training courses not run by universities or colleges) and learning from work experience or self-study, termed Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). This should have been gained within the last five years and should be equivalent to the learning outcomes of our minimum entry qualifications. If you’re applying for entry with advanced standing or for exemption from specific modules or credit using experience rather than credits, there is a £200 administration fee. You’ll find more information about applying with APL by visiting: falmouth.ac.uk/study/apply/apl

If English is not your first language, you’ll need to demonstrate English language skills that are sufficiently developed for successful completion of your studies. We accept a range of recognised English language qualifications. For full details of accepted tests and required scores for postgraduate study, please visit: falmouth.ac.uk/study/international/englishlanguage-requirements

For on-campus courses, international applicants who require a Student Visa to study in the UK must take a recognised language test that is approved and vouched for by the University. Our Applicant Services team can help with any questions you may have.

For more information regarding equivalent international qualifications, please visit: falmouth.ac.uk/international/entry-requirements

Terms & Conditions

Falmouth University takes reasonable care to ensure that prospectus and course information is accurate and complete at the time it is published. Once you have accepted an offer, the information provided about your course (including its content, structure, duration, location and fees) forms part of the contractual terms between you and the University, subject only to the limited rights to make changes set out below and to your statutory rights under consumer law.

The University may make minor changes to courses where these are reasonably necessary, for example to reflect developments in the subject, feedback from students or changes required by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies. Such changes will not materially alter the nature of the course. If the University proposes to make a material change to your course, or to discontinue a course, we will inform you as soon as it is reasonably practicable to do so. Where a material change occurs, you will be given clear information about your options, which may include the right to withdraw from the contract without penalty and receive an appropriate refund; or transfer to a suitable alternative course, or complete your studies under transitional or “teach out” arrangements. Full details of the support and remedies available are set out in the University’s Student Protection Plan, available on our website.

In some limited circumstances, events beyond the University’s reasonable control may affect our ability to deliver services exactly as described. These events may include, for example, government action, serious public health emergencies or other genuine force majeure events. Where such circumstances arise, the University will take all reasonable steps to minimise disruption to students and to maintain academic standards, including by making reasonable and proportionate adjustments. If we are unable to provide a substantial part of your course as agreed, the remedies described above and in the Student Protection Plan will apply.

Some courses may be subject to final validation or approval. Where this applies, it will be made clear before you accept an offer. If approval is not granted, affected students will be informed promptly and offered appropriate alternatives or the right to withdraw with a full refund of any fees paid.

The University is required to comply with applicable UK sanctions legislation and, where necessary due

to contractual arrangements with international partners, applicable US sanctions regimes. In limited circumstances, this may affect the University’s ability to enrol or continue to teach students who are domiciled in, or otherwise subject to, relevant sanctions restrictions. If these requirements affect your application or enrolment, the University will inform you as soon as reasonably possible and explain the consequences and available options, including any rights to withdraw or receive a refund where applicable.

For students who require immigration permission to study in the UK, enrolment and continued study are subject to compliance with UK immigration law, including holding valid permission for the duration of the course where required. Where a visa or other immigration permission is necessary, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain and maintain that permission and to comply with any conditions that apply to it. The University’s ability to enrol or continue to teach a student may be affected where a student is refused immigration permission, does not hold valid permission for study or is unable to continue studying as a result of changes to their immigration status or applicable law. If immigration requirements affect your ability to start or continue your course, the University will inform you as soon as reasonably possible and explain the options available to you. Depending on the circumstances and timing, these options may include deferral, withdrawal without academic penalty or an appropriate refund in accordance with the University’s policies and your statutory rights.

Nothing in this section limits your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable consumer protection legislation; nor do they limit or exclude the University’s obligation to provide services with reasonable care and skill.
