One of the most important things we do as a Council is to advocate for the community.

Just recently I've been advocating to the Government to do something about the e-bikes travelling dangerously on our T-ways and other roads. Also we wrote to the International Eucharistic Congress Sydney and the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney to offer Fairfield Showground as a possible venue for the upcoming Papal trip. I'll keep you updated.

We have a budget of $69.2 million worth of capital works programs proposed for the coming financial year with many city-shaping projects underway or being planned.

We are working on the design of an impressive Community and Event Centre at Fairfield Showground, as well as embellishment of open space at Brenan Park, Smithfield; Longfield Park, Cabramatta and Allambie Park, Bossley Park, to mention but a few.

Other revitalisation projects will see millions of dollars on upgrades to playgrounds, sportsfields and open space ($14.6 million), roads and transport ($15.8 million), public building upgrades ($4.4 million) and new and upgraded footpaths ($2.1 million).

Our 2026-2027 Draft Operational Plan, which gives you all our works and

services planned for the next financial year is currently on exhibition on our website until 29 April.

Investing in our community 2026/2027

Residents will benefit from exciting asset improvements as well as a strong and innovative program of Council works proposed for the financial year ahead. Council will continue to deliver quality services and projects, creating jobs and valuable infrastructure that will be enjoyed by the community for years to come.

MAJOR PROJECTS UPDATE

Both sides of the culvert going under Mimosa Road at the Powhatan Park Detention Basin, which was completed in March.

Upgrades for better flood protection

We have now completed three upgrades to the City's detention basins to help better protect properties in the event of flooding.

Powhatan Park Detention Basin upgrade works in Greenfield Park have just been completed, while upgrade works at Stockdale Detention Basin in Abbotsbury were completed late last year. Fairfield Golf Course Detention Basin upgrades were completed a few years ago.

These are critical upgrades to improve measures against property damage in the event of flooding. Detention basins hold excess stormwater during heavy rain and release it

slowly into the creeks, reducing the chance of flooding downstream.

The works, jointly funded by Council and the Federal Government, will see increased water holding capacity, bringing our detention basins into line with contemporary NSW Government requirements.

At Powhatan Park we have also taken the opportunity to upgrade the sportsfield lighting, so it's bigger and brighter for evening use with taller light poles and higher intensity light.

City beautification

We are continuing to make our City an attractive place to live with a program of town centre beautification initiatives, such as public art decals for utility infrastructure, signage, more planter boxes, pavement upgrades and wall art murals.

This is all in addition to our regular schedule of grass mowing and garden maintenance, street sweeping, litter removal and planting of approximately 23,000 new trees and plants across the City.

In planning

New dog park coming soon

We are currently planning for a dedicated off-leash dog park at Brenan Park, Smithfield along with garden areas and benches and seating.

Council currently has 5 off-leash parks for dogs across the City and recently expanded the Wakeley dog park at King Park.

Playground upgrades

Local families are getting more opportunities to get out and about and active together as our playground upgrade program continues apace.

We are currently constructing a playground at Heysen Park, Abbotsbury.

The Heysen Park playground will be based on a farm theme, which is a nod to the original uses of the land around the suburb.

Playground construction will also soon start at Kinghorne Park, Bonnyrigg. This playground will have a castle theme with a drawbridge and an alligator!

In the coming year we will also be upgrading playgrounds at Chisholm Park, St Johns Park; Lalich Park, Bonnyrigg; Bold Park, Cabramatta West and Wetherill Park Reserve.

We will also be installing new outdoor fitness equipment at King Park 2 Wakeley.

AROUND OUR CITY

Closeto 15,000 revellers celebrated the Lunar New Year at Cabramatta and Canley Heights in February, enjoying family-friendly entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display in Cabramatta to see in the Year of the Horse.

Look out for ANZAC Day ceremonies and activities in our City during April.

Local senior residents performed at the Seniors Got Talent Show during the Seniors Expo at Fairfield Showground in March.

Mayor Frank Carbone presented

Lifetime Business Award in February to Sam Haifawi, owner of the Musician Avenue, Fairfield.

Congratulations to local resident Anna on her 100th birthday in February. Anna arrived in Australia after World War 2 from Poland.

Mayor Frank Carbone and Member for Fowler Dai Le attended the opening of Gidget House for new parents at Fairfield Hospital.

Mayor Frank Carbone met the Fijian Pathfinders, Cabramatta at their Clean Up Australia Day site near Fairfield Adventure Park.

Fairfield Hospital update

Tangible progress on the $550 million upgrade of Fairfield Hospital has begun with early works underway to prepare the site for future major construction activity.

Early works include earth clearing, construction of retaining walls and laying asphalt to expand the existing car park to ensure parking availability during major construction.

In late 2025, the concept design provided us with an opportunity to comment on what the new hospital building might look like, the services to be provided and how the new building would link to the existing hospital. Recently we had the chance to comment on the proposed 460-space multi-storey car park.

In 2021, Council launched a public petition backed by over 10,000 of your signatures. Our united voice secured the NSW Government’s commitment to redevelop our hospital. Council remains committed to ensuring the redevelopment meets the needs of our diverse and growing population, now and into the future.

Greening our City

Council plants tens of thousands of native plants each year. We plant many along creek lines and bushland reserves across the City to restore threatened flora and provide homes for our native animals.

We have been planting trees for decades. Check out the regeneration below, changing a barren Bonnyrigg wetland landscape into a lush green area.

Take our bus tour to visit and learn about our threatened flora and fauna and what we can do to help them to be more resilient.

Know a young person aged between 12 and 24-years who impresses you with their drive, achievements or community work?

Nominate them for a Fairfield City Mayor’s Youth Achievement Award.

The awards recognise local young people and groups that champion excellence in the sports, arts, business, humanitarian and community activism arenas.

Each year, winners and placegetters are announced in ten categories including leadership, creative arts, sports impact, start-up talent, new beginnings and more.

Nominations for the 2026 Fairfield City Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards open on 16 April. Winners will be announced at a special presentation in June.

Fairfield City Golf Course welcomes golfers of all skill levels. Our venue features an 18 hole public golf course, a driving range, and a professional shop, across a 42-hectare site.
