Fairfield City Council’s Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography

Competition is an annual celebration of creativity, inviting amateur and emerging artists and photographers living in Fairfield City to share their unique perspectives through visual storytelling.

In 2026, the competition received 352 submissions across the visual arts and photography categories. Participants embraced this year’s theme, ‘Discover Fairfield: Festivals, Food, and Family Fun!’, capturing the vibrant moments, cultural traditions, community connections and everyday experiences that make Fairfield City such a special place to live.

This publication showcases a selection of the outstanding entries submitted across the primary, secondary and adult categories. Many of these works were also featured in exhibitions at Fairfield City Council’s Administration Centre and the Whitlam Library at Cabramatta.

Thank you to everyone who entered the competition and shared their creativity with the community. Your works celebrate the diversity, spirit and character of Fairfield City, and we look forward to welcoming even more inspiring submissions in 2027.

Message from the Mayor

The 2026 Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography Competition encouraged participants to explore the theme ‘Discover Fairfield: Festivals, Food, and Family Fun!’, highlighting the people, places and experiences that bring our community together.

This year’s submissions were of an exceptionally high standard, showcasing the remarkable creativity and talent that exists throughout Fairfield City. I invite you to visit the exhibitions now displayed at Council’s Administration Centre and Whitlam Library, Cabramatta.

I hope they have inspired you to participate in next year’s competition. Congratulations to our winners and finalists, and I encourage all aspiring artists and photographers to participate in next year’s competition.

At the 2025 Cabramatta Moon Festival, the Brazilian Samba dancers closed the show. They were so beautiful and their costumes were amazing.

I am an artist who has lived in Abbotsbury for 15 years. I love to create artworks and share my life experiences through paintings.

In every brushstroke and photograph, Fairfield’s story comes to life.

Silaar Gorbthum, Adult category ‘Our Lime Tree’

In Thai cooking, lime is an essential ingredient, adding balance and freshness to many traditional dishes. The fruit from this tree has become a meaningful link to the culture my grandmother brought with her and continues to share through her cooking.

Like my family, the tree has taken root in new soil and flourished. Each lime carries memories of shared meals, family gatherings and the traditions passed down through generations.

Through this artwork, I wanted to capture my grandmother’s role in keeping our Thai heritage alive while creating a sense of home in Fairfield.

My name is Silaar and I am 21 years old. I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends as they are a big part of who I am and the inspiration behind my work. Ever since I was young, I have always been drawn to creativity, whether it is through painting, drawing or creating entertaining videos!

‘The Heart of Our Community’

My artwork portrays the Cabramatta Freedom Plaza gateway during the annual moon festival. While painting this piece, I thought about the many families who have built their lives in Cabramatta and the stories that have been carried here across generations.

Cabramatta is more than a place known for its food and festivals, its a place where cultures meet, traditions are shared, and people find a sense of belonging. The family in my painting represents those connections between generations, while the lanterns symbolise hope, celebration and the many different stories that make up the community.

Through the vibrant colours and atmosphere, I wanted to capture the feeling of walking through Cabramatta on a special evening, hearing laughter, sharing food, seeing familiar faces and feeling connected to something bigger than yourself.

I enjoy painting in my spare time and have always been interested in art. I like experimenting with different styles and techniques, and love the challenge of turning an idea into a finished piece.

‘See good in all things’

My artwork is a video animation of an elderly woman walking through Fairfield towards a bus stop. Created during a time when I felt overwhelmed by work, life, and the state of the world, it was inspired by an ordinary moment that stayed with me.

The woman’s quiet determination reflected the contrast between personal struggle and the steady rhythm of everyday life. Through this work, I explore how hope can be found in ordinary places and in the people who shape Fairfield’s community every day.

I am a Sydney-based visual artist and musician working across drawing, performance, installation, sculpture, and sound. Using paper, lino tiles, and found objects, my practice explores memory, vulnerability, labour, and lived experience through contemporary art.

‘A Festival Favourite’

Cecil Hills High School, Year 7

My artwork celebrates the joy and excitement of Fairfield festivals. The spiral potato on a stick extends out from the artwork in 3D, making it feel almost close enough to touch.

I wanted people to look at it and imagine reaching out to grab it, remembering the fun of enjoying festival food, spending time with family and friends, and making happy memories together. I chose the title ‘A Festival Favourite’ because a potato on a stick is one of the foods people look forward to at festivals. For me, it wouldn’t feel like a festival without it.

I enjoy drawing, painting and all kinds of creative activities. I am interested in cooking, gardening and playing online games. I also like printing and painting 3D models based on characters and objects from video games. In my free time, I like playing games with my friends, spending time with family, and working on creative projects.

‘Under the Sky of Festivity’

Under the Sky of Festivity uses a first-person perspective to capture a moment where I am most connected to the Cabramatta Moon Festival, reflecting family fun, community, and culture. Cool tones and textured lanterns, buildings, fireworks, and lion dancers made from tinsel and clay bring the vibrant festival atmosphere to life. Set at night, the artwork highlights the festival at its brightest, transforming ordinary streets into a lively celebration. Through this scene, I aim to show how Fairfield’s festivals strengthen connections and create lasting memories for people of all ages and backgrounds.

I am a young artist who felt inspired by Fairfield City’s rich diversity which motivated me to paint one of Council’s most beloved festival, the Cabramatta Moon Festival. Growing up within this area had allowed me to immerse myself in a range of festivals, traditions and influenced my innovative ideas towards art. I used my personal experience with our vivid community in order to create pieces that reflect shared memories, cultures and a deep sense of connection to country.

‘The Asian Culture of Cabramatta’ Fairfield High School, Year 9

My Digital Art shows the special and unique things that make Fairfield City special, including family, food and cultural festivals. The scenes that are placed in Cabramatta represents my beautiful asian culture, with the food and market scene celebrate Fairfield City’s multicultural culture.

The watercolour style creates a warm and welcoming feeling, and the slight blurs to create a memory-like feel, showing Fairfield as a place where people come together to enjoy and share traditions.

I’m a student who enjoys art and creativity. I enjoy experimenting with different styles to express ideas and tell stories. This artwork was inspired by the diversity and welcoming spirit of Fairfield City, which makes it a unique place to live and visit.

‘Pieceful Community’

My artwork depicts Fairfield’s Youth festival located at Fairfield Showground during the daytime. It’s not as exciting during the night but still quite as interesting!

There were many market and information stalls that you can see in my artwork. I was surprised to see such a diverse community, ranging from children to adults. What makes this piece special to me, is that the artwork is made from pieces of flyers and brochures I got from the festival!

I’m a student who likes painting and sketching, both traditional and digital! Sometimes I even catch myself daydreaming about what my next art piece would be. I like sketching portraits of people and still life.

My artwork shows a lively and imaginative version of Fairfield Adventure Park, inspired by the theme: “Festivals, Food & Family Fun”. I wanted to capture how Fairfield City is a place full of excitement, colour and joy for the community.

I enjoy art, including drawing, painting and more. I like to be creative in my free time as art helps express my ideas and thoughts through art. Fairfield Adventure Park inspired me to turn real-life scenery into drawings. I especially love creating scenes that are lively and full of energy.

This artwork shows me wearing glasses with reflections of the things I love about Fairfield City. In the reflections you can see family, food, festivals and fireworks. I wanted to show how Fairfield City is full of colour, fun and different cultures that make our community special.

I love drawing and being creative. I am always sketching and have lots of art books at home filled with drawings and paintings. I enjoy trying different styles of art and finding new ways to bring my ideas to life. I often take my drawings to school to show my friends. Art is one of my favourite ways to use my imagination and express myself.

This drawing is about my family and when I was 4 years old. We went here so we can have a happy day together. This is the car park in Canley Vale and is our secret spot for fireworks! I am wearing my Chinese dress and holding a lantern from the Moon Festival. Fairfield City has many fun days! I drew music coming from the park. There was music and little shops you can buy food and toys.

Fairfield City celebrates people who come from different countries. There’s lots of days to have family fun!

‘Armenian Woman’

King Park Public School, Year 5

The arched niche in the centre resembles the arches found in traditional Armenian architecture, especially medieval monasteries and churches.

The star like motifs and interlacing patterns create a sense of symbolism rather than realism. Pomegranates on the left side are especially significant in Armenian culture. They are longstanding symbols of fertility, abundance, life, and national identity. The stylised face has a contemplative, almost spiritual quality. The colour palette combines earth stone tones with reds, golds, blue and whites. These colours are common in Armenian decorative arts and illuminated manuscripts.

I’m proud to be Armenian Australian. In my painting, I wanted to show who I am and what is important to me. I painted symbols of my Armenian culture because my heritage is a big part of my life. I also included my family and community because I love being part of a caring and supportive community.

‘Happy Memories at the Farm’ Lansvale Public School, Year 3

This is a 3D sculpture made from recycled materials. It shows my family enjoying a special day at Calmsley Hill City Farm. We sat on a truck and went around the farm, enjoying seeing different animals.

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse, so I created a red horse standing at the entrance gate. It welcomes visitors to the farm and to Fairfield City. The horse represents strength, good luck, and celebration.

I love drawing, playing the piano, and being creative. At school I enjoy art and learning new things. At home, I love spending time with my family and doing fun activities together.

In my artwork I represented various cultures and people in Fairfield City through the theme ‘Festivals, Food and Family Fun’. I included a ferris wheel and large slide while also including the Nian Beast, a symbol associated with the celebration of Chinese New Year. I included food from various ethnicities and a family in the centre sitting on a blanket in a field watching fireworks surrounded by all the different cultural foods and festivities.

Place at the Table’

‘A Place at the Table’ represents Fairfield City’s rich multicultural community through a collection of cuisines from different cultures. I wanted to capture the spirit of Fairfield by celebrating the diversity, traditions, and shared experiences that bring people together.

I aimed to capture Fairfield City as a place where diversity is embraced, cultures are celebrated, and food, festivals, and family create a strong sense of connection and community—a community to call home.

I am an emerging artist based in Fairfield City, currently studying a Diploma of Visual Arts. Through my art practice, I enjoy exploring themes of culture, community, symbolism, and everyday experiences. I work across a variety of mediums and enjoy experimenting with different techniques, from painting and drawing to printmaking.

As an Armenian born in Iraq and a proud Australian citizen. Being part of the Fairfield community has exposed me to a rich mix of cultures, traditions, and experiences, which continue to influence my creative practice.

My artwork celebrates the theme “Discover Fairfield: Festivals, Food and Family Fun” by showing a lively community festival in a beautiful park.

Families of different generations enjoy spending time together, with adults holding children’s hands and an elderly mother sharing the day with her family. Children fly colourful balloons while a clown and stilt walkers add fun and excitement. Food stalls bring people together to enjoy different foods and cultures. A Ferris wheel creates a festive atmosphere and represents joy and adventure.

I am a hobbyist artist who enjoys painting, mixed media and collage. I also love crafts and knitting, skills passed down to me by my mother. I live in Bonnyrigg opposite a park where families gather and young people relax. The tall eucalyptus trees filled with singing birds create a peaceful atmosphere that nurtures my creativity and deepens my appreciation for my suburb.

I love to have seen the drastic transformation of the beating heart of Fairfield and Cabramatta CBD. I’m in my second year of studying a Bachelor of Business and have been very fortunate to re-enter the arts at the beginning of this year and have been in a program for emerging creatives in PYT Fairfield.

I work at Bossley Park Public School and have a deep passion for art. I enjoy sharing my creativity with students, lighting up their lives by encouraging them to explore and express themselves through artistic activities.

Among the many celebrations I attend throughout the year, one performance is always present: Múa Lân, commonly referred to as Lion Dancing.

During my time partaking in the sport of Lion Dancing, I realised how passionate people were about spreading the good fortune, love, and community amongst any environment. I created this piece as my token of appreciation to lion dancing and the people I met while I was learning, how it unveiled my eyes to a deeper understanding and connection with my culture.

This is about my third time entering the Capture Fairfield competition! I’ve been practicing visual arts ever since I was 7 years old and it’s grown into my special passion that I express in my free time. My favourite mediums would be oil painting, graphite pencil and digital art.

‘What We Carry’

Canley Vale High School, Year 10

My artwork explores the connection between festivals, food and family through the experience of live music. It was inspired by the Bring It On! Youth Festival that celebrates diverse cultures and creates a space where people from different backgrounds can come together.

The warm colours and energetic atmosphere reflect the sense of belonging, joy and togetherness experienced at these events. As a member of the youth media volunteer team, I wanted to capture this sense of community and show that culture is expressed not only through food, but also through music, celebration and the moments we share together.

I don’t paint very often, but I enjoy it because it helps me slow down and relax while seeing where my ideas go. I actually started this piece without the intention of joining any competition, but found out about Fairfield Capture and ended up submitting my work. Outside of painting, music is a big part of my life and I play both piano and guitar. I think that influences how I think about rhythm, movement and emotion when I’m creating art.

Through my work, I want people to feel a sense of warmth, atmosphere and connection. My name is Safaa, and I’m Pakistani, Scottish, and Aussie. I have a passion for art, especially sketching people. This artwork took me at least five hours to complete, and I’m really proud of how it turned out.

My artwork is inspired by the words displayed on the Pai Lau Gate during the annual Fairfield City Lunar New Year Festival.

In my artwork I showcase a couple sharing food in front of a crowd of people in the Pai Lau Gate.

Through my artwork, I wanted to celebrate the diversity that makes Fairfield City such a unique community. The title reflects the importance of sharing and respecting different cultures, bringing people together through festivals, food, and family fun.

‘Connecting Notes’

Connecting notes is a mixed media artwork composed of acrylic paints, markers, collage and elements of watercolour, and crayons. This piece highlights the connection through cultures that are made because of the universal language, music.

My artwork surrounds a girl in traditional Khmer attire, playing a not so traditional instrument, showing how everyone indulges in the heritage of different regions around the globe. The dragon formed from the sounds of the musicians symbolises the contribution to culture music and music festivals has. Connecting notes aim is to celebrate the defining effect music has on diversification and connectivity.

I am a 15 year old self taught artist born in Cambodia. I moved to Australia very young but I still learnt to appreciate both Cambodian and Australian culture. Although I don’t live in my home country anymore I am still connected to it through my traditional dance.
