ISSUE #08 SEPTEMBER 2017

LEADING THE WAY! When you think about it, Fairfield is small business. Small firms account for nearly half our jobs; they create the majority of new jobs; and they’re on the cutting edge of innovation, providing products and ideas for the future. Our entrepreneurs have the spirit to dream impossible dreams, take great risks, and work long hours to make their dreams come true. The fact is most successful entrepreneurs contribute a lot to society. They are the heroes of economic life. We don’t begrudge them the rewards for their hard work. Too often, entrepreneurs are forgotten heroes. We rarely hear about them. But look into the heart of Fairfield, and you’ll see them. They’re the owners of that shop down the street, the faithfuls who support our churches, schools and communities. Proof of that, is the small businesses that each year sponsor Culinary Carnivale and so many other City events, for that we are grateful. Entrepreneurs have always been leaders in Fairfield! The sponsors this year for Culinary Carnivale are: Fairfield Hotel, Fairfield Forum, Neeta City, Radio Austral, Fairfield City Champion, Elias Pharmacy, Filpure

Water Filtration Systems, St John’s Park Bowling Club and Galaxy Solutions System P/L. By working to ensure we live in a City that prioritises innovation, entrepreneurship and public safety we can create a better Fairfield for us to live and work in. Fairfield Council regards public safety as a top priority. With this in mind, the Place Team has installed more CCTV cameras throughout the City Centre, with new additions in Thomas Ware Plaza and The Crescent. People feel safer and these cameras continue to receive community support. Helen Pijaca Fairfield City Centre Co-ordinator

A Brush with

FAME What did the dentist get for an award? A little plaque. That’s not the case for Dr Peter Etcell and his Harris Street dental practice when Council honoured him with a Fairfield Lifetime Business Award. “It’s great recognition for the team. What I value most about this award is that Council acknowledges the massive contribution small business delivers for the community,” Dr Etcell said. “Our team is going to continue to work hard every day as we have for the last 33 years. “I know it’s corny but this award has put a smile on my face”. Fairfield City Council honours businesses that have stood the test of time and traded for more than 25 years and up to 50 years – and longer. To be in business for a long time proves that you are definitely doing something right. Head to www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au to see whether you are eligible for the Fairfield Lifetime Business Award. SPACE

Plonking your Goodyears, Bridgestones, Michelins or Pirellis in the Fairfield City Centre has become a lot easier with the introduction of angled parking in The Crescent. It’s trouble free to park and it’s faster and, as a result, the City Centre has more parking spaces. Mayor of Fairfield City, Frank Carbone said the spaces were a win/win for the people of Fairfield. “For businesses more parking increases foot traffic, angle parking gives potential customers better access to the stores,” he said. “The $500,000 project is a vital piece of economic infrastructure for the City. Combine that with the recent footpath upgrades; this is going to breathe new life into the City Centre.” The changes see an increase of 24 new parking spaces now available enhancing the CBD’s reputation as a multigenerational City Centre. In Australia and especially in Sydney the reliance on cars as the major form of transport remains predominate. Experts say that every on-street parking space in a thriving retail district is worth its weight in gold.

Fairfield City Chamber of Commerce President, Mr Vince Movizio said, “We welcome this excellent project; we estimate the angle parking is going to contribute to the economic growth of the City. Fairfield Council should be commended for this initiative. The Chamber of Commerce has witnessed many other councils across Sydney, which have removed on-street parking, and as a result they killed businesses. Angle parking in The Crescent is great for shoppers, great for business and great for Fairfield.” A major benefit of angled parking that has been overlooked – no more reverse parallel parking!

CHRISTINE ANU Joins our Party!

Australia’s iconic female Indigenous performer is the headline act for Culinary Carnivale. Christine Anu joins our party on Saturday 21 October from 11am to 4pm in Ware Street Fairfield.

Christine Anu makes her Culinary Carnivale debut

“I am excited to be performing at Culinary Carnivale, I have heard so much about this event. Culinary Carnivale unites culture with food and music. Can’t wait,” Christine Anu said. As part of the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Christine Anu performed her signature song “My Island Home”, which is regarded by many as the unofficial national anthem of Australia. “My Island Home holds a special place in my heart and for many Australians. Of course I will belt out Party and Sunshine on a Rainy Day, also I am looking forward to watching the Latino singers and dancers, and it’s going to be great,” she said. The Spanish and Latin American festival will see the return of Victor Valdes Y Su Mariachi and some exciting new talent, mouth-watering food and amusement rides.

2016

In its short history Culinary Carnivale has become a star attraction of Good Food Month and is a major marketing initiative for the City.

“The Fairfield Place Team understands no brand stands still. We don’t rest on our laurels, we renew and innovate each year,” said Helen Pijaca, Fairfield City Centre Co-ordinator.

“Culinary Carnivale creates a perfect atmosphere for business owners to entertain and engage customers and create a memorable shopping experience that will lead to an increase in sales and hopefully return business. The event is vital to the local economy”.

Trend data shows that Culinary Carnivale attracts visitors across the Sydney basin, ranging from all ages, demographics and incomes.

“Christine Anu is going to deliver on stage and it’s going to be a Culinary Carnivale to remember,” said Tony Walker, Fairfield Place Manager.

“The event gives our businesses an introduction to a potential new customer base. Many visitors are surprised by the diversity of our shops.
