Born in Argentina, Robert brings with him a wealth of language knowledge as he’s fluent in six languages; German, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Dutch and French. • Robert brings 25 years of experience in the automotive industry with a diverse background. Having been Commercial Director at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket Division in Argentina, he was responsible for developing markets in South America for brands such as INA, LuK and FAG. He also spent some time in Iberia, heading up Strategic Planning for Schaeffler Group in Madrid, Spain. Most recently, he was involved in business development for over 30 shareholders in 20 different countries for TEMOT International Autoparts GmbH. • Fun fact… In the 90’s Schaeffler had an exclusive distributor in Argentina whose name was Alberto Bergoglio. Vehicle Of The Month Vauxhall has always been a firm favourite with the British market and they have sold in huge numbers for decades, but there is no doubt that the Corsa is the most profitable and popular car in Vauxhall’s collection. The Corsa E has the same body as its predecessors but has had a facelift on the interior and engine side of things. The petrol engines include an 89/113bhp 1.0 litre three cylinder or a 1.4 turbo with 99bhp which they always expected to be the most popular of the range. The 1.0 litre Corsa is the best engine in the range, it has a smooth ride which is great for day to day driving, but the 113bhp version still has that power to give you a surge of power when you want to speed off. The 89bhp shouldn’t be discouraged though as it still gives plenty of oomph which will please most drivers. Strangely the 1.4 turbo is cheaper than the 1.0 litre, but it suits being in a Corsa making it fun down country roads and enabling it to pull away easily without any delay in power which is sometimes a common feature with turbocharged engines. The Corsa features a six-speed manual gearbox which makes it lighter and more accurate for driving around. The suspension has been tweaked slightly so there is the option of a sportier version, offering stiffer suspension and a lower ride, although luckily this doesn’t appear to affect the comfort too much. The normal suspension will cushion the bumps better although it will still send the odd bump and thud up into the cabin, but on a day to day basis, potholes and bumps shouldn’t be an issue to your comfort. The stiffer suspension offers a little more turn-in and less body float that the standard models seem to suffer with. The Vauxhall Corsa has always been a generous size within the varying ranges of cars and this is still the case, but the interior has had a dress up which seems to be a big improvement. The dashboard now has a glossy plastic coating, screaming quality to its previous versions as well as a 7 inch touch screen in the centre of the dash. It isn’t as fast or user-friendly as the screen in the VW Polo, but it keeps the dash free of buttons and is good enough to get through your journey. Along with all of the other mod cons you get nowadays, this car has certainly taken a dip in the style pool and it only shows that things can improve with age. Is this a good choice for a change of car? Well, it competes with other cars on price, there is a lot of equipment for the price unlike others, and depending on what trims you get it can be very cost effective. The nippy performance of the 1.4 will certainly attract some people as it will give you the speed but keep you comfortable on your trip to the shops aswell as the country roads. It potentially doesn’t beat the Ford Fiesta for handling and comfort, but it is certainly a wise choice of a car, with only minor downsides that are in no way deal-breakers for the everyday driver.

Timing chain kits are a fast-growing product within the aftermarket, which means that more and more garages are taking on work to replace timing chains due to wear or failure.
Unlike timing belts, most of which are mounted externally and a relatively easy replacement, timing chains are a far more difficult task, as they are mounted internally and being reliant on adequate lubrication. Other components within the engine must be inspected, cleaned or replaced to ensure the cause(s) of the original chain failure is addressed. Timing chains rely on lubrication and constant tension to operate correctly and sustain a full-service life. Therefore as part of the replacement process, the engine lubrication system must be inspected, oil galleries and sump pan cleaned and critical parts such as oil pumps and crankshaft bearings must be replaced if worn. Modern timing chains are much smaller in design than the chains used in engines designed in the last century. This deliberate design change is to reduce the weight of the chain along with other components to make the engine lighter and more efficient. To achieve this weight reduction, modern materials and plating technologies have been used in the production; to give the chain the strength and durability needed to operate within the highly stressed modern diesel and petrol engine. FAI partners with world class factories to produce parts for all FAI parts programmes, but to focus on timing chain kits. The two critical parts of a timing chain kit are the chain(s) and hydraulic tensioner(s). FAI ‘s timing chain factory partner supplies OE tier one and all FAI chains are produced on the same production line as OE. This means that FAI chains are produced using the same materials and tolerances that OE use. These tolerances are much lower than aftermarket factories, the result is a chain that will run quieter, smoother and longer. Every tensioner valve is checked before being assembled into the tensioner, then the tensioner is checked again to ensure 100% functionality. It is false economy to choose a “cheap� replacement part and this is particularly important for timing chain/ kit, as the small saving made will be wiped out by the commercial cost of later rectification and the emotional cost of an unhappy customer.

Engine Of The Month The Opel/Vauxhall EcoTec engines that launched in 1996 have been the preferred power plants in most Opel/ Vauxhall cars for many years. This is due to its comparatively cheap running costs and increased power with lower emissions compared to the OHV engine series it replaced. The B12XEL engine is one of the latest generations that still utilises the original platform of 4 valves per cylinder with DOHC, driven by a 130 link simplex timing chain. Although this engine is a robust engine in both 3 & 4 cylinder variants, with the prevalence of vehicles using this engine, the demand is always high. All engine parts for this EcoTec series are good items to stock with good stock turn rates and profit potential.

Two Podium Holders! Chaz Davies and Scott Redding were back at it again
As August was coming to an end, it was no easy weekend for Chaz Davies and Scott Redding who were busy fighting for victory at the Prosecco Doc Aragon Round of the WorldSBK. Amazingly for the second time in the 2020 WorldSBK season, the Aruba. it Racing – Ducati team held onto the top two podiums. Both came out with positive feelings from the free practice sessions, with Chaz Davies being the protagonist of the day with a first place in FP1 and working hard with used tires in FP2 but kept up a great pace throughout. Redding starting in 3rd and Davies in 9th once again went out to prove their places on this amazing team. In the opening six laps of the race, Davies climbed five positions and after a crash from the Kawasaki team, he started chasing Rea. Davies finally overtook him with only three laps to go, meaning he could have a go at getting past his teammate. Redding meanwhile kept building his pace and managed to overtake to first position by lap eight. He defended himself well throughout, causing his competitor Rea to make a mistake, meaning Redding and Davies were in the top two spots. Davies tried to overtake Redding but finished a mere three tenths of a second behind his teammate.

After the great 1-2 result from Race One, Davies managed another podium for the Aruba.it Team by finishing second in Race Two after fighting with Rea from the Kawasaki Team once again right until the very last lap. He gained positions on the grid thanks to the fifth place in the Superpole Race. His progression throughout the race was exciting, attacking Redding, Bautista and Van der Mark all in the space of laps 4 and 6! He kept a solid pace throughout and put the pressure onto Rea with only 4 laps to go, not quite getting to the first spot but still finishing a solid second place. Redding started from P2 thanks to the second position in the Superpole Race and he tried his very best to keep up with Rea, but his rear tire was not the same as it was in Race One, so slowly lost the gain he would have had in Race One. He managed to attack Van der Mark to get a respectable P4 as he crossed the chequered flag.
‘Unfortunately I struggled a lot since the very first laps to make the rear tire work well. I was never able to find the grip that would allow me to push with the right rhythm. In the next two days, we will have to work to understand if it was a problem with the bike or just a tire that didn’t work in the best way, also because Chaz went very fast. I find it hard to accept to win Race One and finish fourth in Race Two.’ Scott Redding Michael Rinaldi – also sponsored by FAI – also had a good weekend of racing, fighting hard to get the result of three Ducatis in the top finishing five. He ended up finishing in fifth position, also managing to get past Van der Mark just like Redding did. His pace was very similar to Reddings and he tried hard to get past him in Race Two but didn’t quite manage it. He is set to fight again with the next race in a few days time. As it stands at the moment for the overall Championship, Scott Redding is sitting in second position and Chaz Davies in fourth. Fingers crossed they can keep getting podiums throughout the rest of the season!
