»Vehicle » of the Month Peugeot 3008 Has Peugeot produced their best car ever? We’re sure those of you that were die-hard fans of the 205 GTi would probably disagree but bear with us and we’ll explain. The old 3008 certainly had its plus points however most of these were replicated by competitors’ versions and as a result, it hardly set the world on fire; practical and functional but never exciting. Now designated as an SUV as opposed to an MPV, the new version has been styled to include a high and aggressive front end, sleek contours down the side and a tailpipe on each side to the rear; albeit just for aesthetics. As a combination, it has a far greater road presence over the outgoing model, looking more at home compared to much pricier SUVs. The French brands first attempt at a mid-sized SUV has been well received, making it not only a common sight on British roads but throughout Europe; bolstered by winning the 2017 European Car of the Year. This neat styling also extends to the inside where you’re greeted with high-quality materials and all the tech you’d expect from any modern car. A perfect family car for both soaking up the speed bumps around town and equally at home cruising on the motorway, the 3008 has almost no downsides. Not many owners would describe the handling as fun but for most buyers, it offers what they need, especially when it’ll run you another 10k for something like an Alfa Stelvio. Convinced?... Well, whatever your opinion, the masses seem to be, with the 3008 is looking to generate a good portion of sales within its segment. Team Aruba Take on Phillip Island, Australia
Phillip Island was experiencing heavy rain early into Friday’s free practise but after a considerable spell in the pits, riders were greeted with some well received sun. It was clear from the start that Scott Redding meant business, taking advantage of the drying track, he pulled in the quickest time of 1’30.436. A pace he carried to the next day in the Superpole race, in which Redding came 2nd; just 0.339 of a second off race leader, Sykes. The opening race thrilled spectators with a close battle between a highly competitive leading pack, all crossing the finish line with just thousandths of a second between them. Scott started from the front row, keeping within the leading pack, the British rider took the opportunity to take the lead which he held between lap 12 – 16. On the final lap there was nothing between the top riders however, Redding exploited the power of the Panigale on the final strait, stealing third from Yamaha’s Van Der Mark. Two races and two podium places, Redding was off to a great start in WSBK. Chaz Davies struggled to find his footing in both practice sessions and Superpole, leading to a less than favourable starting place of 16th. Despite this, Chaz hammered around the first lap, passing no less than 6 riders. The Welshman made a push towards the end of the race that gave him the pace to manoeuvre in to 8th before the chequered flag. Redding had held his place within the top three for both Superpoles and Saturday’s race, which meant he again started in the front row for race two. Scott was pushed in to 4th early on but stayed close to Razgatlioglu, waiting for an inroad to take third. Lap six saw him make his move yet, it wasn’t an easy race, with Scott battling with Van Der Mark to keep hold of his position; a battle he won to see his third podium. Well done Scott! 12

“What can I say? I’ve been on the podium three times, on two occasions I finished within a tenth of a second off the winner: not bad for my first Superbike weekend. I want to thank the team for their work.
It was very important to get off to a good start and I am very satisfied with that. Maybe we still lack some speed but it would be wrong to make comparisons with Alvaro who is much lighter than me”. – Scott Redding Chaz had a much better final race, that saw him generate a pace just off that of the leading pack. He was pitted against ex-teammate Alvaro Bautista for 5th place, friend turned foe Chaz road like a champ to get the better of the Spaniard.

It was good to be able to get closer to the front group even though the starting position was very complicated… it was very important to finish in a positive way. »»Engine of the Month Mercedes 2.1 CDi OM.646 If you’ve driven a diesel Mercedes from the 2000s badged 200 or 220 CDi, then it’s highly likely to have been powered by the OM 646 series of engines. The German manufacturer applied the Euro 4 compliant powerplant to its biggest selling models, including the C & E Class. The flexible unit was tuned to produce anywhere between 87 and 168 HP, with most buyers opting for a middle ground of either the 121 or 148 HP derivatives. Serving as the first mass-production engine to replace the woeful naturally aspirated diesels of the 90s, the new 2.1 would find its way into hundreds of thousands of vehicles across the globe; until its successor in 2010.

In 2006 the turbo was swapped out along with the glow plugs, now opting for a ceramic heating element, which improved engine starting; one of the gripes from a decerning customer base. Despite the ageing applications powered by the OM 646, demand is still strong for what are fairly low stressed units, finally showing their age.
