»Vehicle » of the Month MINI R56 2007-2013 - A British Icon?
The Mini brand is ingrained in British motoring history, a heritage that stretches back to the 50s. Despite the ownership of the company falling to BMW in 2000, the design has been kept remarkably like the original, giving a retro feel like no other marque; with the Fiat 500 a close second. The introduction of the R56 model in 2007 was a big step forward in terms of refinement and interior quality. The critics at the time dubbed the R56 as ‘the MINI you can live with’ as it boasted more space for both passengers and luggage but that’s like comparing a Chihuahua to a Shih Tzu, there isn’t a lot of difference! You could forgive the measly cabin as no other brand could match the quirky charm that the MINI could and when it came to smiles-per-mile, the R56 excelled. No matter what powertrain you opted for, the Go-Kart like handling wasn’t lacking, especially if the badge on the back read Cooper S. With the old supercharged unit now replaced by a PSA derived 1.6 T, if you could afford one, it was the pick of the range. The MINI R56 isn’t to everyone’s taste, being a bit too cutesy for some and certainly won’t do as a family car but still won over a huge customer base; sold in over 70 countries. One thing is for certain, they are showing their age and need some TLC to keep them on the road for years to come. As always, FAI has you covered!

Area Sales Managers - Welcome To The World Of Video Conferencing As we all know from personal use, online video conferencing platforms have become more popular than ever, utilised by the masses to stay connected throughout this difficult time. This trend is set to continue for the foreseeable and has obvious benefits within the business world too. We’re the first to admit that we didn’t predict that our sales team would be conducting customer meetings to discuss new to range parts or our latest product lines via a digital channel within just a few short months, but now that they are, it’s extremely effective and for short meetings, free to access. The pandemic has catapulted the way in which our sales team operate forwards in time by 5 years or more. Despite the pluses that a true face to face meeting draws, the ‘new normal’ enables us to meet with vastly more clients in a day, giving you the flexibility to take the time from your busy day when it suits you best. This isn’t the end of traditional sit-down meetings but an interlude in which we can all stay connected, delivering the same levels of service as at the beginning of the year. We’ll also keep this channel of communication open as an ongoing practice as we’re sure many of our customers will appreciate the time savings it provides. The Road Ahead - Reshaping The Way We Work 2020 will go down in history as the year when the world stood still, however that world is beginning to move and is quickly heading towards 2021. So, what are our plans for the last 5 months of 2020 and how do they affect you? First and foremost, we know that the development of parts waits for no man, which is why our development team has been running throughout the year, keeping pace with the implementation of hundreds of new components. We’re now fully staffed and are proud to see the fruits of our labour, such as the new wheel bearing kits featured this month, with plenty more in the pipeline. As always, we’ll keep you posted! FAI has invested heavily in cataloguing systems and data to make sure our coverage is in line with current and future demand. New vehicle parc data will enable us to supply effectively but also guide our customers to a successful period ahead. Our aim is to review each individual account held with us so that we understand your needs and in turn give customers a tailored overview of our offering. All businesses have suffered since April yet we feel that we’re in a strong position to get back to pre Covid levels quickly, which will surely have a positive result for all those who we supply. Once again, we’d like to thank you, our customers, for your continued business. Like us, many of you have not stopped since the restrictions were put in place, therefore providing an essential service to keep keyworkers on the road. »»Sponsorship: WorldSBK Back With A Bang! - Team Aruba.it This weekend saw the long-awaited return of World Super Bike, held at a very hot track in Jerez – Spain. Scott Redding & Chaz Davies were primed for a highly competitive contest and took full advantage of the free practice sessions where both performed well, each finishing within the top group of contenders. While Spain basked in the heatwave that was pushing its way across the continent, the riders prepared for the first of the weekend’s races in extreme conditions. Despite the baking heat producing a lofty air temperature of 35C, this was to be Redding’s best outing yet. Securing pole position in the morning Superpole, the Englishman was in a strong position from the start. Race one began with Scott in 3rd having lost a little ground to Toprak & Rea, however Scott went on the attack in lap 11, passing Toprak and shortly after managing to outmanoeuvre Rea with just 5 laps remaining. His first WSBK win, Redding couldn’t have been more pleased. Finding himself in 11th at corner one, Chaz worked hard to battle his way up the leader board. He knew a podium position was a tall order but didn’t stop racing hard until the chequered flag, finishing a respectable 5th. Redding was primed for another challenge on Sunday, this time starting on the grid from 2nd place. He blasted off the line to sneak ahead of Rea on the first corner, a lead he progressed throughout the race to take the number one spot for the second day running.

“I’m very excited about this weekend. We had two wins, a pole position and a second place. It’s a great result, and for this, I want to thank the whole Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team for putting me in a position to be competitive. The feeling with the bike was great, and I was able to take a good advantage in the first laps. I am very satisfied” – Scott Redding Chaz, close on his heels, quickly caught up with Rea, who was now in 2nd. Davies quickly saw his opportunity to make a pass, giving the FAI sponsored team domination over last laps of the race. Chaz felt much happier up on the podium – where he belongs! Due to a fantastic end to the weekend’s proceedings, he’ll leave Jerez with fire in his belly for round three. “I’m very happy to be back on the podium… I want to thank my team for the great work they have done on the bike since Friday morning. Now we go to Portimao with great enthusiasm and conviction”. - Chaz Davies Michael Rinaldi, also sponsored by FAI had a brilliant weekend by laying down the quickest lap time in the second free practice session and with finishing positions of 4th in race two, he equalled his own best WSBK result. This young rider is one to watch as clearly his time in Super Bikes is building on his raw talent to produce a future winner. Watch this space!

»»Engine of the Month VW Group 1.8 TSi
The 1.8 16v TSI was built on the EA888 platform and launched in 2007. A smooth free-revving unit that would be fitted to a multitude of VW group vehicles. Updated in 2008 (gen 2) just a year after the launch of Gen 1 to fix the excessive oil consumption by replacing the pistons & rings. Even with the updates, there were still reports of excessive oil consumption by owners. Tuned to either 160 or 180 bhp, it was the petrol of choice for popular vehicles such as the Leon FR and higher spec’d Audi A3; with its big brother, the 2.0 TSi, employed for the GTI’s & VRS variants within the VW empire. The third generation is still used in current models yet the 1.8 TSi has been squeezed by the higher-powered 1.4/1.5 TSi and with improvements on the 2.0 TSi fuel consumption & emissions, the 1.8’s days are numbered. Despite its diminishing use, due to the vast amount of models that this TSi powerplant was utilised for means, there is plenty of demand for a quality repair solution.
