»»COVID-19 First of all, we hope you’re all staying safe and your workforces have remained fit and well during this challenging time. As the UK Government Minister said this week - what we are facing today, the world has not faced anything comparable since World War Two. We truly believe that if everyone followed the guidelines given to us by our respective Governments, then we will pull through this period faster and become stronger companies for it. To help maintain road transportation during these efforts, FAI will remain operational to ensure that supply is there for any demand created from vehicle servicing and repair across the world. This decision has been made solely to help keep emergency services, key workers and other essential service vehicles on the road. We are fully committed to maintaining business as usual whilst continuously monitoring official guidance from the UK Government and Public Health England. We continue to take all necessary precautions to ensure both the safety of our customers and our teams. If the government stance changes and our services no longer fall within the essential category, we will close until advised otherwise. »Vehicle » of the Month Alfa Romeo Mito 2008 - 2018
The battle of the Supermini hotted up somewhat when BMW owned Mini released the first of a new generation back in 2001. Terms like stylish and quirky had been lost from the segment in the 90’s with mainstream manufactures producing the habitual supply of boring ‘run-abouts’. It took a few more years for competing manufacturers to take the fight to the Mini but when they did, they came thick & fast; the Fiat 500, Audi A1 and DS3 leading the charge. Beauty is subjective but what seems unanimous amongst critics, is that the Alfa Romeo Mito was one of the best-looking alternatives. Fashionable & distinctive, the practical Mito could hold your shopping and four adults in relative comfort, something the Mini could never do. The Italian supermini served as a slightly left field choice, not to say that’s a bad thing, not by a long chalk. Unlike some rivals, the Mito was offered with a broad range of engine choices that served almost anyone’s needs. Petrol power came in the form of peppy turbo’d engines that deliver anywhere between 85 and 170 HP. There are diesels too, covered by the 1.3 CDTi that was shared between a raft of car builders and a more substantial 1.6. With all mitos’ being on the firm side it was the 1.4T that made the comfort trade off feel worthwhile. Holding well in corners and experiencing little body lean, the 170 HP version offered a cheaper thrill than the more serious Cooper S. The Mito was never going to outsell the Fiesta or Corsa for that matter, but the Italian flare allowed a brand that was being pushed in to the ‘niche’ bracket to be seen as a real alternative. With a production run spanning a decade there are plenty of them about in need of repair. FAI to the rescue!

New from Yenmak - Available Q2. As part of a significant rebranding exercise, Yenmak has introduced new-and-improved product packaging that you may have already noticed appearing in our deliveries. We have been sole UK distributors of the Yenmak Piston and Piston Ring range since 2010 so this year makes it our 10th year in partnership. The eye-catching and recyclable new packaging also accompanies a change in Yenmak’s product part numbering and labelling which we explain on the opposite page. As of the 25th March, we have adopted Yenmak’s new format which introduces a more complex and futureproof system. Despite the natural adjustment period, this will make it easier to understand what product is being ordered. In addition to these changes, we have continued our investments in the brand by expanding our range with 157 new part numbers which will be hitting our shelves in the coming weeks. Big End / Connecting Rod Bearing Installation Engine Bearings are carefully specified for individual applications. In a number of cases, the Big End Bearing can use common upper and lower halves, which are the same shells just in reverse to one another. However, in most modern applications the upper half needs to be a higher specification, with technology such as Start/Stop additional strain is placed on the Thrust side of the Connecting Rod.
Upper (Thrust) Rod / Piston Side Piston
The upper half is recognised as the thrust side as during the combustion cycle, it is subject to the highest load. The composition of the upper half big end bearing can vary, most widely used is LC/LCX, a heavy duty specification. The colour of the upper shell is usually a matte white/grey, usually darker than the lower shell.

The lower half big end bearing, is most commonly composed of an aluminium design, with standard overlays.

Vauxhall / Opel 1.2i A12XER / A12XEL The third generation of ‘Family O’ engines from the GM owned Opel-Vauxhall, was designed to produce better fuel economy and emissions than the outgoing Twin-Port; used throughout the 2000s. The new A Series engines, dubbed EcoFlex, powered all popular models from 2009; with the 1.2 almost solely utilised in the Corsa D (MkIII). With the arrival of the Adam in 2013, the A12XEL powered the new city car from launch but with the introduction of the 1.0T in early 2015, it made for a confusing engine line-up. The 1.2i applied to the Corsa made sense, offering a bit more confidence over the 1.0i naturally aspirated that was painfully slow. However, in the Adam, for anyone over the age of 21 – where insurance is less of an issue, the aforementioned 1.0T offered buyers more power, better fuel consumption and cheaper road tax. Mmmm, maybe it’s the old school mentality that bigger is better… Despite this, the 1.2 sold in its thousands, making it one of the most common small engines around.
