FAI Engine Bearings Historically engine bearings have been made from either Babbitt, Aluminium or Copper and Lead combined. Traditionally Babbitt/Aluminium was used for most engines and Lead/Copper for higher performance engines, these materials work perfectly fine on early engine designs. The only real issue an installer would have is to make sure that they had ordered the correct size and fitted the bearings into the right cap. This was usually an easy process as all bearings had a locating tab and/or oil feed holes which confirmed the position of the bearings, and the tab doubled up as a retainer to hold the bearing in place during operation. However modern engines have seen a significant change in tolerances being reduced and material specifications being improved. Many high-speed diesel & petrol engines, particularly with turbochargers use a polymer material coating commonly called Sputter™. This coating gives hard-wearing protection to the bearing that is normally under the highest load. In a conrod, the polymer bearings are placed in the upper position/con-rod housing and with the main bearing, they are fitted in the lower position/main bearing cap. Many new engines are fitted with con-rods that do not have the locating tab which can cause confusion if polymer bearings are required to be fitted. Polymer engine bearings for modern engines can appear to have a different surface colour. The brighter metallic finish bearing is normally fitted to the con-rod cap, whereas the polymer-coated bearing goes into the con-rod housing. This is due to the upper bearing being subjected to far higher thrust loads from the combustion process. Older generation Con-Rods usually have markings on the side or sometimes a locating pin on the face to ensure that the installer will align the rod cap the correct way round. New generation con-rods do not have this design and are termed as “Cracked” Con-rods. This production method creates a unique design between the two surfaces of the con-rod which ensures that they can only be fitted in a single position. This also creates greater housing accuracy for the bearings fitted to the con-rod. If the polymer bearings are not fitted in the correct position, which results in the standard bearing being fitted on the pressure loaded side, it will result in premature bearing wear. The standard material is not able to withstand the sustained high operating loads and will result in catastrophic con-rod and crankshaft damage. Always take care when installing engine bearings to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation. If you are unsure, please refer to the FAI technical documents for help.

T
he Civic is a name that has been around for so long and with so many generations it can be used as a yardstick to gauge peoples memories and age to boot. Spanning almost 50 years, there is usually a generation that you’ll first remember – maybe the mid-80s incarnation, the one with a huge rear window? or maybe it’s the first Civic to display the Type-R badging? The tenth generation ran for just 6 years of that half-century but brought with it a larger, more family orientated vehicle. The reason for this was Honda’s new global strategy, that for the first time, unified the Civic for all markets – No smaller European version. With a reputation for being one of the most reliable cars within the segment, the X sold over a million globally. And with over 18 million sold since its 1972 launch and the recent introduction of the eleventh version, the Civic may be around for some time! Honda almost completely reworked the suspension so it was essential that our product team be quick off the mark in producing an Aftermarket solution. The Items here are by far the most common to require maintenance and are therefore recommended for that next stock order!

he 1.25 Duratec was a product of the Sigma family of engines that were introduced to customers in the mid-1990s. Originally this was dubbed as the Zetec engine, but this was blurred somewhat by the adoption of Zetec as a trim level a few years later. The Duratec was an upgraded powerplant that was almost solely mated to the 2008 Fiesta before finally giving way to the overwhelming rise of the 1.0 EcoBoost. It was, however, fitted to one of the most popular vehicles in Europe and at times, has been the bestselling model in the region.
