F
ew models of cars have appealed to as broad of a customer base as the Fiesta! Over its 45 year history, this supermini has sold 4.5 million units in the UK alone! What’s the secret to the success of this market leader?... Now in its 7th generation, it still casts a shadow over competitors like the Vauxhall Corsa and pretty much anything from PSA. Built on a great series of chassis, the king of the superminis is a ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ vehicle, keeping both granny and boy racer happy – and everyone in between it seems. From pootling down to the shops or exploited for a bit of fun as a hot hatch, the Fiesta does it all. From the late 80s the Fiesta could be had with the all-important RS badge or later the ST, which to those in the know, signified something very different to the standard version. Agile, easy to control and mated to a suitably powerful turbo’d engine, the hot versions are a lot of fun - albeit with a rockhard ride, ouch! The 2017 model seems to have followed in the footsteps of its predecessors, ticking all the boxes for the next generation of drivers. FAI developed parts for the Mk7 as soon as it was released. The sheer numbers of Fiesta’s on the road dictates that these are parts that you’ll want to stock!

FAI Oil Control Valves The Oil Control Valve (OCV) is a vital component that regulates oil flow to each Variable Valve Timing Hub/Sprocket (VVT). The OCV can fail due to wear, contamination or corrosion. If the OCV is faulty it will cause the VVT to fail and promoting timing chain wear. To ensure long service life, It is recommended that all OCV’s are replaced when any VVT timing chain kit is being replaced. OCV001

Why the pan should be changed: • Transmission Pans are part of the service maintenance of the vehicle – Outlined by OEM schedules • Changing the fluid and pan helps extend the life of the transmission • Transmission fluid that has deteriorated with a build-up of debris can block the valve body, limiting the ability to shift between gears. • Deteriorated fluid does not serve as an effective lubricant, causing excessive heat, which speeds up the rate of wear on transmission parts which causes debris to enter the lubrication system. • FAI Pans are ideal for preventative maintenance or replacement when the gear selection is slow or lurching between changes.

Engine of the Month FIAT 1.2i 169.A4000
T
he 1.2i (169A400) is almost solely used in Fiat products, with the exception of the Ford KA which is based on the 500 and actually produced right alongside each other in Fiat’s own factory. The foundations of this powerplant go back decades but was upcycled for its application in the FIAT 500. The engine was applied to some of the Italian firms’ larger vehicles but due to its modest power output, it felt more at home in the lightweight 500, weighing in at just 900kg. The 1.2 accounted for the lion share of sales as the number of units produced meant this was often the cheaper option than one of the multi-air engines. The lacklustre nature of the 1.2 didn’t bother many buyers as most utilised it for its intended use of town & city driving. Those looking for the smallest of supermini but with performance as a priority could always opt for the pocketrocket Abarth 595. Some engines are more exciting than others and this one may be the equivalent of getting socks for your birthday but what is exciting is the demand for parts that this little engine has generated. As with all engines that have followed an evolutionary path rather than revolutionary, it will have shared parts amongst engine codes with others unique to the 169A4000. FAI Sponsored Team & Rider Go Eleven Score Points Despite Injured Rider Due to the shoulder injury, Chaz picked up in the previous round, the weekend at Donnington didn’t go as the team had hoped. Chaz soldiered on, giving his all in each of the events but always with the knowledge of his physical limitations. In true British fashion, the weekends racing was hampered by wet weather; something that no rider wants to contend with when recovering from injury. Opening with the Superpole pre-race, which would dictate riders standing for race one, the Welshman was looking confident. Chaz was achieving consecutive decreases in lap time, with the opportunity to get in on the second row but a small mistake at the penultimate corner cost him a few tenths of a second – settling for 9th overall. The sun appeared shortly before the first race which meant a quick change of tyre to slicks. The track was still a little wet in places making it a risky decision for any rider to fully exploit their bike; Chaz decided to ride with caution. The issue of a slippery circuit was compounded with the shoulder pain Chaz was experiencing, obviously exacerbated by days of riding. He was forced to slow his pace but stayed in the event, securing 11th place. The aforementioned problems facing Davies continued for Sunday’s Superpole but once again showed his determination by coming 8th, bettering his position by a small margin compared to the Saturday Superpole.
Race two was the driest stage of the weekend which gave confidence to push the Ducati V4-RS harder and achieve a superb lap time of 1.28.770. Chaz’s injury felt strangely better so with less shoulder pain this allowed him to manoeuvre past a few riders who had gotten ahead of him in the first few corners. He then set his sights on the next two contenders but unfortunately ran out of tarmac to chase them down. With all things considered, Chaz came a respectable 7th, securing a place in each of the weekend’s events and scoring some all-important points.

FAI Sponsored Team Finish R6 On High Note!
Round five was held in the Netherlands at the TT Assen circuit. Built in the 1950s, the history & popularity of the track has meant it’s often referred to as ‘The Cathedral’ of motorcycling. Leading up to race one, Chaz had some tyre issues in the Superpole that caused him to make an unexpected pit stop. Debris had damaged both tyre and swingarm which had evidently split the left wall of the rear tyre. He managed to finish the race but in 13th. Race one saw the Welsh rider initially slip to an undesirable 20th but Chaz soon found his rhythm, passing ten of his competitors and finishing 9th overall. Chaz bettered the previous day’s Superpole by coming ninth, allowing for a 3rd row start on the grid for the second race. The last event of the weekend would mark Chaz’s 200th and despite some threatening clouds, he did everyone proud. A great first corner allowed Davies to open up into the straight, passing a few riders as he did so. Later in the race, a battle ensued between Chaz and fellow Ducati riders Redding & Rinaldi. Now in fourth, a podium position was looking promising, and this may well have happened if it hadn’t been for the front tyre giving up. Chaz had to now use his skill to stop the front sliding out while keeping a pace to fend off any attackers. He pulled off a great finish of 4th and the title of 1st within Independent Team & rider. Next-up, Autodrom in the Czech Republic. Come on Chaz!!!
