Cataloguing Excellence
We at FAI are proud to announce that we are officially a Premier Data Supplier to TecDoc, this announcement continues to show the painstaking work that we at FAI do to ensure data quality and accuracy.
With additional dedicated focus placed on Cataloguing in recent years, we have recruited specialised staff to the department some 12 months ago. This has enabled us to commit a substantial amount of resource towards continually improving our digital catalogue presence both in the UK and globally. TecDoc by TecAlliance is one of the biggest international catalogue platforms available, with over 254 million product linkages and 110,000 vehicle types. For many years FAI Automotive has achieved the highest rated standard of Certified Data Supplier (CDS), and now with the inaugural release of their new Premier Data Supplier (PDS) certification, we have been one of the very few companies to receive this highly coveted award from the start. This has been no small feat, TecAlliance set the bar very high on specific product lines which requires some ingenuity to find solutions for. We have worked through millions of lines of data, to ensure we not only meet but exceed the requirements set out, with the ultimate goal of making life as easy as possible for our customers using our data. There’s a complete schedule set out for the rest of 2021 and even into 2022, with further improvements in data and features of both our own FAI eCat and the TecDoc platform. So ensure you’re signed up to stay up to date with the latest developments.

Shipping & Logistics As The Global Shipping Crisis Impacts The Aftermarket, FAI Changes Processes & Procedures.
As we move into the second half of 2021, we wanted to share with you an update in regards to the ongoing issues in the supply chain globally. This hopefully gives you a clear vision of the day to day battles we’re having to continue to deliver the production performance you require and expect from us. Currently, shipping is hugely delayed worldwide, due to port congestion, a lack of vessels and a lack of shipping containers. There’s a global plan to manufacture many more millions of shipping containers alongside increasing the fleets they sail upon.
However, this all takes time and whilst demand is so high across many sectors, we are experiencing huge shipping increases from the lows at the start of 2020 of $2500 for a large container to now an all-time high of $16,000. To make sure we have enough products in production we have enhanced our schedules by between 4-8 weeks meaning we hold more stock on site. As you read this, we are now scheduling February & March 2022 production.

The schedule is very advanced and over the last 8 weeks, we’ve been working even harder to make sure this is correct as raw material prices spike and the sourcing of steels, aluminium and other daily sourced raw materials fall into short supply.
Whilst this makes for a gloomy outlook, we must look to the positive that our sector has transitioned the pandemic a lot better than other sectors. Yes, it is extremely hard work and increases in costs are never wellreceived, whichever part of the supply chain you are in. However, these are unprecedented times, and we must all work together to succeed. Jonathan Alexander
In this period, we have seen the market increases of 20-50% on raw materials, this has a significant impact on us all and we are yet to feel the full brunt of these increases.

Vehicle of the Month CITROEN C1 2014> Tie Rod End Left & Right
W
hen the first item listed as standard equipment on Citroen’s online configurator is the Odometer, you get some idea of how basic the offering is. We’d have led with the 7-inch touchscreen (as this is the most advanced item on the car) but knowing how fast you’re going is important too! There are some benefits of not buying a technology-laden car, namely, the price tag. There aren’t many cars that can be owned new from 12.5 k and for a large group of consumers, this uncomplicated option is exactly what they’re looking for. On the whole, it’s a decent A to B car; mainly sold as a five-door for a bit of added practicality but strictly a 4-seater. Styling cues such as the slightly garish coloured dash segments point to the younger generation as Citroen’s target audience, hitting the nail on the head in terms of low insurance and maintenance costs. We can’t say we love the C1 – possibly no one can – but we admire its simplicity in a tech-driven automotive world. What we can say is that FAI stocks many C1 parts to keep those savvy buyers happy.

Engine of the Month VAG 1.6 TDI CAY...
T
he year was 2009 and diesel was king! – and the 1.6 TDi was as popular as the models it was being applied to. To a large degree it replaced its petrol counterpart, the 1.6i naturally aspirated. With the TDI in various states of tune, it was suited to small & mid-sized family cars; providing the fuel economy that diesel is famous for along with a shove of torque to keep up with motorway traffic. Both points went a long way to make up for the fact your new Polo sounded a bit agricultural. The CAY generation was fitted throughout the group for the best part of a decade and while the small TSI units have now taken their place, there are still hundreds of thousands of TDi’s still operated across Europe. This version of the 1.6 was applied to some larger, more questionable applications like the Passat, Octavia & Superb, all of which had to be driven hard to get up to speed this side of Christmas. Due to a combination of cold start thrashings, age & subsequent mileage, many are in need of a quality repair solution. WSBK - Podiums & Pitfalls It’s been a busy month not only for business but for our sponsored WorldSBK team too. The Spanish, Portuguese and Italian rounds all took place within a 4-week period which kept Rider & Team working very hard indeed. So far Go Eleven, an independent entrant & their sole rider, Chaz Davies, have had a very varied start to the championship. Near misses, crashes and podium positions have been made up from the fledgling team trying to tap into the gold that Chaz can deliver but taking some knocks in the process.
What’s happened so far?... Round 1: Aragon – Spain, played host as the opener and it brought with it some unwanted heat, to the tune of 40c! The Welsh rider pushed hard from the off in R1 having found himself starting 5th on the grid; a placing from the earlier Superpole race. The pack of riders occupying 2nd to 4th were just ahead of Chaz but he couldn’t push past before the flag came down. Fifth is what he got but the whole team felt a little cheated out of a podium place, as in terms of time, Chaz was just a few tenths of a second from 2nd place.

He achieved a better standing from the second Superpole by securing 4th. The weather had swung the other way and up until the very start of the race, the heavens had opened all over the track. Based on this the team went for a rain tyre on the front and a standard on the back; a decision that was wrong in this instance. The rain stopped and the warm track dried rapidly leading to Chaz riding an unstable bike, an issue that came all too apparent when he crashed on turn 7. Davies fighting spirit led him back into the race, now with some slicks on the wheels. His riding from this point was exemplary and even shaved an average of half a second per lap off the race leader. What could he have done if it hadn’t been for that rain tyre choice!?
Round 2: The Next round at Estoril - Portugal, was looking to be as problematic with further tyre issues causing an unsatisfactory finish of 15th in the Superpole. Chaz never lets small things like starting 15th on the grid keep him from battling to the front of the pack; something he displayed well while securing a very respectable 6th. The Portuguese track is known for tricky overtaking and the Super Pole proved this as he ran out of tarmac trying to chase down the next placing; ultimately finishing in 9th. Again, just as in race one, he bolted from the start, passing a couple of riders before setting his sights on the leading pack. This valiant effort got Chaz on the Podium for the first time this season in second place. Well done, Chaz! R3: Now in Italy, Chaz looked to carry on his pattern of holding back on the Super Pole race but making up for it in the main events. The Saturday saw him start in 10th on the grid but once race one started, he worked his way up the leader board well until he lost the front of the bike at turn 4; this time there was no restart so couldn’t complete the race. Things went from bad to worse on Sunday with a hard crash within the Super Pole which left Chaz with right shoulder pain. He was determined to give race two a go, but it soon became apparent to team & rider that it was putting too much strain on the injury. The decision to lose the battle to fight another day was taken by Davies. The next round is less than two weeks away, where Chaz will be on home turf back in the UK. We’ll be there to cheer him on at Donnington 2-4th July.
