f an Audi A3 Sportback is too long & low for you and a Q3 too big, you could be accused of being fussy! But that’s not something Audi will accuse you of; they would just say “Here’s your perfect car…an Audi Q2!”

The trade press had mixed opinions about Audi’s mini-SUV as it filled yet another niche, therefore enabling comparisons to be drawn between it and a whole host of rivals; a couple of which seemed to come from the same manufacturer.

Is it a shrunken Q3 or a high-riding A3 or something cobbled together with parts they had lying around from other cars in the range?... Well, we think it’s all of the above! The overriding factor resides in a manufacturer who pioneered the way of making quality and more importantly, highly desirable SUV’s. With the vast array of engines within the VW group along with the Q2 being modelled on the MQB platform (no surprise there!) the goal of getting more aspirational buyers behind the wheel of an SUV is Child’s play. For what still seems like a new model in the German brands’ line-up, the Q2 has now been around for five years, where numbers have been building steadily to over 50k on UK roads alone. The commonality between this and other models in the VW group is great news for our industry, allowing many components to be applied against hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Shy of Oil? The Mazda SHY 2.2D was the Japanese firms’ go-to engine to compete with the excellent offerings by the German and French manufacturers. To an extent it was exactly that, providing adequate shove while producing real-world economy in the high 40’s. The powerplant sits in most Mazda models from 2012 onwards, accounting for about half of the CX-5’s on the road. Having done some mileage over the years and most out of the care of the dealer network, some owners are experiencing the downsides of the very technology that swayed them to purchase one in the first place. In most instances when an issue is brewing, the check oil light will flicker on and off or idle rough, both symptoms often caused by fuel ingress to the oil system. This issue can be one of a few things but the main culprit is fuel release while the DPF regenerates. This gradual deterioration of lubricating properties as the oil is diluted stops the protection of some of the more vulnerable elements within the engine. This can lead to many failures as swarf builds up in the system causing bearing wear, turbo malfunction and oil pick-ups to clog. FAI has a series of components to help rebuild the SHY with more in development.

Engine of the Month 2.5 DI-D 4D56 (16V)

he 4D56 belongs to the “Astron” family of engines that first featured in the 1980 Mitsubishi Galant. The longused engine has gone through various modifications and upgrades and has found a massive following and support base in SUV & light commercial vehicle owners. The 4D56 16 Valve is the last iteration of this engine sold in Europe. It features a common rail, 16 valve, twin-cam design which made it cleaner and more efficient compared to previous generations.

By producing an average 135 BHP the unit was almost solely used in the L200 as a tool-lugging workhorse. This combination of practicality and torque gained favour with buyers, making it an appealing package for any tradesman who wanted a functional & reliable option. Those workhorses are a little tired out from trotting here & there over the years, with many needing some welldeserved TLC. They’re by no means off to the knackers yard yet, with many holding a decent resale value despite extremely high miles.
