>2018 Build it and they will come…and they did! FAI provided a warm welcome to hundreds of delegates at this year’s Automechanika held in the cavernous Messe exhibition centre, based in the heart of the city. The show, now in its 25th year, spread into hall 12 to allow for the influx of new exhibitors, flying in from 170 countries around the globe. It’s not easy getting noticed in an area the size of over 50 football pitches but investment in our largest stand to date, featuring an FAI sponsored Ducati World Super Bike, thankfully caught the eye of everyone walking by. Following our exponential growth since Automechanika 2016 we anticipated an increase in footfall on the stand. Staffed by the entire international sales force along with our directors and product specialists, we greeted existing business partners and forged new relationships, of which there were many. We appreciated the sheer amount of customers that popped along, if only to just say hello and share a drink with us. The new stand design featured large panels showcasing some of our best-selling products, including our comprehensive chain kits that were supported by a new ‘hot-of-the-press’ catalogue. Our new product brochures flew off the stand; giving easy access to our product portfolio including FAIs’ latest products - FAI engine bearings and top strut mounts.

The working day didn’t stop when the exhibition centre closed its doors of an evening. Our team could be found in local restaurants, enjoying the company of associates away from the hustle & bustle of the day. We enjoyed every moment of the weeklong event and as we start planning the next show the minute we arrive back home, why not get in touch and arrange to visit us in 2020. We’ll look forward to it!

FAI Sponsored WSBK Team: Back to Business The summer is drawing to a close and Aruba.it have sprung back in to action for the tenth round of the world-SBK championship. Portamao played host to this weekend’s bout with the twisty, Algarve based track heating up to a lofty 40 degrees. Marco Melandri set his sights on a podium position early on, clinging on to the race leader he maintained a blistering pace which resulted in a well deserved 2nd place. Chaz, still recovering from a reoccurring shoulder injury, gave a show of strength pulling from 15th to finish 4th, just missing out on a spot next to fellow team mate, Marco. Michael Rinaldi, as an independent rider, raced for both kudos amongst the ‘independents’ and a ranking alongside his seasoned peers. The young Italian again showed his potential by finishing 9th overall and second within the junior riders’ segment. The sun rose in to a bright blue sky on the Sunday, producing the hottest temperatures of the weekend. Melandri rode another solid race and crossing the finishing line in third. Chaz fought through his injury pain and defied the odds the again secure a 4th place finish. To round off a positive weekend of racing Rinaldi finished 8th overall and 1st amongst the independents.

Magny-Cours, nestled in the heart of France, provided a challenging weekend of racing for round 11 of the WSBK championship. The competition is hotting-up as the year of racing draws to a close, with two of the top spots still up for grabs. Chaz is giving his all despite the lingering issues surrounding his double collarbone injury. Race 1 saw a closely packed leading group resulting in the Welshman taking fifth but in reality he was less than two seconds off of 3rd. Marco pushed hard to improve on his 12th position start, falling in just behind his team mate in 6th having suffered some breaking issues. This was to be Michael Rinaldis last race of the season with R12 & R13 taking place outside of Europe. Forming the junior element of the team, the young Italian has showcased his skills extremely well throughout the year, getting results that are usually seen in seasoned riders. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to finish with a ‘bang’ as everyone had hoped; forced to retire in race 1 and finishing 13th in Sundays race. We’ll be seeing more from this talented rider in the near future and as a proud sponsor, we’d like to take the opportunity to say, well done Michael! Melandri had another difficult race, battling against a lack of stability in the corners and again missed out on a podium place, coming in 5th. Chaz pounded off the line, taking the lead and holding off any opponents for 12 laps. The race leaders entered in to a game of cat and mouse which finally ended with Chaz snapping up 2nd and earning some vital points. Davies will be giving his all over the remaining bouts to hold his position of 2nd in the championship standings.

All joking aside, the Golf MK7 maybe a bit of a yawn when it comes down to the styling, maybe not as exciting as the quirky Leon or not providing the feeling of luxury you get when in an Audi A3 but with 19 variants on offer, all built to a high standard, the Golf is still the epitome of the phrase “It does everything well” The Mexican made Golf Mk7, has offered that feeling of dependability not only through reputation but also through the plethora of safety kit on offer. Customers can choose to further the already 5 star NCAP winning model by opting for nifty features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and driver fatigue detection, the latter of which we’d recommend if opting for the 85 BHP BlueMotion version.

Like most new models released, it’s a little longer and wider than the car it replaced; keeping it’s foothold as the practical hatch that is a no-brainer for family buyers and when fitted with ACC (Adaptive Chassis Control), this conservative looking vehicle can rival comfort levels found only in executive saloons. All those shocks and bumps that this seventh incarnation is so famous of soaking up must go somewhere and that somewhere is the neat suspension setup shaped to the wellknown MQB chassis, the combination of which overcomes potholed back roads. This is where most customers have found the biggest maintenance costs and is thankfully an area that FAI have recognised and developed. Q. I’ve found a part that’s linked by reg but it’s not correct to what is coming off the vehicle. Why is this? Parts are linked to vehicle types and it’s these vehicle types that are then assigned to registration numbers. Sometimes, a vehicle type will cover multiple engines or may fall either side of a chassis/date/engine break. We strive to keep our catalogue up to date with this information so check the notes on the listed parts carefully to ensure that your engine code is listed or that the break information applies to the specific vehicle needing repair. On our web-cat, you can often find this by clicking the (i) icon to expand part/application data.

Q. I’m repairing an Opel/Vauxhall Z12 engine and my timing chain kit has some extra spacers/washers. What are these for? These spacers, found in our TCK4S and TCK116 kits are part of the cam sprocket. Some OE gears were produced using a sintered material with a spacer built in to them while others used a pressed steel material that did not require the spacer at all. In order to cater for all engines and to avoid the mechanic making the repair needing to try and bodge a repair, we have allowed our sprockets to be used either with or without the spacer which are supplied loose in the kit. The engine should always be repaired like-for-like so it’s possible that the spacers could be surplus to requirements in some instances.
Q. I see inlet and exhaust cams listed elsewhere for the Nissan YD25 engine but FAI just says ‘Left’ and ‘Right’. Which is which? The Nissan YD25 engine is a little bit of an oddity. Unlike the significant majority of DOHC engines that have a row of intake valves on one side and a row of exhaust valves on the opposing side, the YD25 has inlet and exhaust valves side-by-side in a mixed configuration.
This means that both cams on the YD25 are each operating intake and exhaust valves. As a result, we list them as ‘left’ and ‘right’ which is the correct terminology for them. And if there’s any doubt about which is the correct left and right, always go based on you standing at the front of the vehicle facing the engine and not the left and right from the perspective of being seated in the vehicle. Vauxhall Astra 2015> The Astra K, launched in 2015 has exceeded all expectations not only in terms of popularity but also because of its unique blend of handling ability and ride comfort that is usually an either-or in this sector; taking on models such as the Focus and Golf that until now were always seen as a cut-above. The previous generation sold like hot-cakes, a favourite with families and fleet managers alike. However, Vauxhall realised that technology offered by competitors had left their offering in the rearview mirror and took some significant steps to improve the characteristics of the new version. »»Engine of the Month BMW M57D30 3.0d It’s fair to say that the BMW straight six diesels created a bench mark that all manufacturers have tried to emulate, which to a degree they have, albeit always one or two steps behind. The smooth (for a diesel), powerful units, left customers wanting for nothing, delivering fuel figures you’d associate with a vehicle kicking out a hundred horses less and quite frankly a ridiculous amount of midrange punch, regardless of application. Any badge ending in 35d put it’s 280 bhp through either two or four wheels, producing an intoxicating driving experience and effortless pace. The M57D30 powered the most popular BMW models for over a decade which sold in droves compared to comparable petrol units that, although loved by enthusiasts, felt like someone was siphoning off fuel whilst you slept.

BMW employ some of the best engineers in the business which has resulted the M57D30 staying on top of Euro emission standards and in 2007, the rise of the term Efficient Dynamics. Tweaks in the fuelling process and various electronic aides which reduced power loss whilst on the move gave birth to a breed of car that is still highly sort after. Most of the cars have now changed hands several times, with each owner driving as enthusiastically as the last, enjoying the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’. Despite being a cut-above in both technology and the myriad of vehicles it was fitted to it has its faults.
