LIBRARY for MIAMI’S FUTURE At the latest edition of Miami Art Week, artist Es Devlin transformed the Faena District into a monumental public reading room—and ensured that its impact would extend far beyond the art installation itself through the donation of thousands of books to Miami-Dade schools.

Commissioned by Faena Art, Library of Us featured a striking rotating triangular bookshelf housing 4000 books, each title hand selected by the artist. Across the bookshelf, scrolling texts on a 50 ft long LED screen were read aloud in the voice of Es Devlin. Conceived as both an immersive artwork and a civic gesture, the installation invited visitors into a shared space for reflection, literature, and collective exchange. Throughout

the experience, Es Devlin emphasized the profound role of books in shaping empathy, imagination, and human connection. Crucially, the project was designed with a lasting educational legacy in mind. Following the exhibition, the books were donated to MiamiDade County Public Schools, where they were carefully sorted by age group and prepared for circulation across the district. The collection included works by authors such as Audre Lorde,

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Gabriel García Márquez, William Shakespeare, James Baldwin, and Maya Angelou, offering students access to a wide spectrum of voices and perspectives. By placing these books directly into classrooms and students’ hands, Library of Us extended its mission beyond the cultural sphere, transforming a temporary art installation into a meaningful investment in literacy and learning.

From Miami Beach’s open-air cinematic landscape to an intimate presentation in New York, Be continues to invite viewers into a meditation on fragility, resilience, and the possibility of peace amid uncertainty.

As part of the 2019 edition of Faena Festival, Faena Art reimagined the LED billboard boats typically associated with commercial advertising as moving vessels for Mobile Video Installations and a public Open Air Cinema series. Free and open to the public, the program activated the waterways and shoreline of Miami Beach with films and video works exploring humanity’s relationship to nature, spirituality, ritual, food, and the sacred. Throughout the festival, video installations traveled across the oceanfront while nightly screenings took place directly on Faena Beach, transforming the coastline into a communal cinematic experience. Within this context, Antonia Wright’s Be (2013) emerged as one of the program’s most arresting works.

The single-channel video depicts the artist covered by a colony of 15,000 bees while practicing Tai Chi in a state of profound stillness. Developed following extensive meditation and Tai Chi training, including time spent studying at an ashram in India, the work examines the tension between vulnerability and control, danger and peace. Addressing both environmental pressures affecting bee populations and the emotional climate of contemporary life, Be proposes calmness not as passivity, but as a radical act of balance and coexistence. Its presentation today at Faena New York extends the work’s resonance beyond its original beachfront setting, reaffirming the enduring power of public art to evolve across time and place.

The Faena Art Digital Art Program presents a curated selection of video and digital artworks, transforming the monitor into a space for experimentation, reflection, and dialogue between art, technology, and the viewer. Conceived as a living exhibition in the corridor of Faena New York, the program expands beyond the traditional gallery format through works that unfold across time, movement, and image. In line with Faena Art’s mission to foster artistic experimentation, cultural exchange, and public engagement, the program supports emerging voices while continuing collaborations with artists connected to Faena Art’s history. The selected works explore themes of identity, culture, community, technology, memory, and social experience, reflecting how artists engage with contemporary life and the communities that shape it.

In a landscape where roses were never meant to bloom, a vision of healing and human connection quietly emerged beside the sea.

Along the windswept coastline of José Ignacio, the property that inspired Tierra Santa Healing House became the setting for an almost impossible gesture: the cultivation of a rose garden in terrain defined by salt air, relentless ocean winds, and wild coastal vegetation where roses were never expected to survive. The beach house also became Alan Faena’s personal refuge over many seasons—a place where he retreated to restore energy, reconnect with nature, and explore a way of living rooted in contemplation, movement, and creativity. Over time, the garden evolved into

a symbol of resilience, beauty, and transformation—proof that care, patience, and intention could allow something delicate to flourish against the odds. What began as an intimate retreat gradually became a destination for friends arriving from around the world, drawn by the magnetic energy of the place and the rituals that naturally formed around it. Days unfolded through long walks by the sea, meditation, physical training, shared meals, music, and celebrations stretching from sunrise to sunset. Among them is Dan Buettner, a Faena Rose member and Emmy Award-winning producer of the Netflix series Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, five-time New York Times bestselling author, and longtime champion of longevity. Best known for identifying the world’s Blue Zones, regions where people consistently live the longest and healthiest lives, Buettner has spent decades studying the habits, environments and social structures that contribute to wellbeing. During a candid conversation with members, Buettner reflected on the personal experience that first inspired his research. When an uncle was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease he became determined to understand whether prevention was possible. At the time, discussing Alzheimer’s and prevention in the same sentence was considered controversial. Decades later, Buettner remains driven by the belief that many of the factors influencing cognitive decline can be addressed long before symptoms emerge. The good news, he said, is if we start early, we can get people to live not just longer, but better. With the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Faena Rose also welcomed FIFA President Gianni Infantino for an intimate discussion on the global evolution of football. Since assuming leadership of FIFA in 2016, Infantino has overseen a period of remarkable growth for the sport, championing expanded international participation, increased investment in development programs, and greater support for women’s football. Speaking to members, he shared a story from a meeting with American mayors in Washington, D.C. One mayor, a devoted baseball fan, cautioned him against suggesting that soccer could rival America’s pastime. Following the conversation he delivered a speech, where he shared the anecdote and noted that “baseball may be America’s pastime, but the future of America is soccer!” The story reflected his conviction that football is one of the world’s most powerful vehicles for cultural exchange and global connection. Daniel Franklin, executive editor at The Economist and founder of the publication’s influential annual forecast The World Ahead, offered members a sweeping look at the geopolitical and technological forces shaping 2026. Long recognized for his analysis of globalization, demographics, innovation, and international affairs, Franklin examined a world increasingly defined by competition for technological dominance and strategic influence. From disruptions to undersea communications infrastructure to the rise of drone incursions and other forms of gray-zone activity, Franklin explored

how governments and non-state actors are testing the limits of modern conflict without crossing into open confrontation. His insights illuminated many of the unseen forces reshaping international affairs, providing members with a nuanced understanding of the challenges likely to define the years ahead. The arts remain equally central to the Faena Rose experience. In a recent conversation, multidisciplinary artist Zoe Buckman discussed her practice that draws from feminism, motherhood, and systems of power through textiles, photography, and large-scale installations. Born in London and based in New York, Buckman’s work sits at the intersection of personal experience and social commentary. Reflecting on the period spent caring for her newborn, then for her mother during illness, Buckman described how she began incorporating embroidery into her work, sewing together vintage doilies, tablecloths, linens, and tea towels, and realized she was participating in a lineage of female expression stretching across generations. “My studio is like an old ladies’ thrift store,” she said. “My work is saying, ‘I am here and we are here, and she, from before and before, was here too.’” Members were also treated to an evening with filmmaker Michael Bay, whose blockbuster career has helped redefine the visual language of contemporary action cinema. Looking back on the making of Bad Boys, Bay recounted how the project was originally conceived as a buddy comedy starring Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz before evolving into the cultural phenomenon audiences know today. He reflected on the skepticism he faced for both his rapid editing style and his decision to cast two Black leads at a time when few Hollywood studios believed the film would resonate internationally. “The movie got a lot of grief because no one likes change in Hollywood,” he said. The film ultimately grossed more than $150 million worldwide, helping reshape industry perceptions about the global appeal of Black-led action films and establishing a visual style that would influence a generation of filmmakers. Together, these conversations underscore Faena Rose’s commitment to engaging innovators whose ideas challenge convention and leave a lasting imprint on culture.
