BEVERLEY SPECK - TEXTILE ARTIST

I am Beverley Speck and I am a textile artist/maker and teacher. I create textile art based on sketches of things I observe out in nature on my daily walks. Alongside this I make a range of textile gifts and accessories, plus I teach the art of felting at workshops around the island.

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

My love of our natural surroundings spills onto the pages of my sketchbook which I then develop into both framed and unframed pieces of artwork back in my studio. They will often feature birds and wildlife, significant local landmarks and my favourite bays. The seasons provide me with a rhythm to follow and a colour palette of inspiration. I use a variety of felting techniques for the backgrounds of my artwork and then stitch the image I am focussing on for that particular piece. Each work is totally unique due to the process I use to make each one.

My textile gift range is perfect for beautiful coastal or countryside homes. I also hand felt the cutest little woodland creatures and a range of garden and sea birds. All of which can be viewed at Jersey Artisans in St Aubin.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

I am always busy making new stock for my shelves at Jersey Artisans, a range of soft furnishing accessories and gifts which are designed to help bring a spring lift to our interiors as our seasons change. Alongside this I am also working on several artwork commissions, follow along on my socials to see my life in the studio and how these pieces develop.

ANDREW SINCLAIR

My name is Andrew Sinclair, a Jersey-based potter working under the name of Sinclair Ceramics and my passion is to create functional and decorative stoneware inspired by Jersey’s landscape and coastal environment.

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

I specialise in large hand thrown vases and lamp bases, some two to three feet tall. By contrast, I also throw smaller vases, mugs, functional tableware and decorative items such as boats and lighthouses, Currently I’m one of the few potters in Jersey who make hand thrown teapots, which is highly skilled and complex work. There’s something for everyone coming out of my workshop in the West of the Island.

The style of my work is both traditional and contemporary and each piece is carefully handmade and glazed before its final firing in an electric kiln. My focus remains on craftsmanship, durability, and creating beautiful ceramics both practical and distinctive.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

I aim to make a variety of larger floor vases that will be thrown in several sections. The latest project is to create very distinctive, elegant narrow necked bottles. Alongside developing the moon vase shape, I hope to explore different methods of glazing. Visitors are welcome to pop into my workshop and see me at work, but a phone call first is advised to ensure I’m there.

Cornerstone.

My first thought when viewing the photo pack sent over by Broadlands for Le Jardin du Viton was that this characterful abode overlooking St Aubin’s Bay was a quintessential family home.

Strictly speaking, it wasn’t my very first thought, which was something closer to ‘here we go, 54 photos to go through and an 1000-word property review to write before this goes to print in under an hour’ (cheers for the tight deadline, Ben, my long-suffering employer). But as you flick through the photos, even in haste, it feels reminiscent of a time when family homes felt cosy and familiar, and you warmed to them in ways that new builds can be harder to connect with.

Maybe it’s the dappled white stone on the exterior walls, the growing area with vegetable patches, or perhaps I simply focused too much on the green plastic toy tractor pictured in one of the gardens (disclaimer, I grew up a St Ouen-ey). Either way, there is a charm to Le Jardin du Viton that makes you imagine you could step through the front door and instantly feel at home on your first night, even if you were sitting around a cardboard box doubling as a dining table and eating takeaway Pizza Quarter for dinner.

For those looking to relocate to a place where lanes are edged with granite walls, hedgerows thicken with wildflowers in summer and the air carries that faint, unmistakable scent of the nearby sea, Le Jardin du Viton is a solid choice. This part of Jersey holds a particular appeal for those who appreciate a short commute to work while still craving quieter surroundings, natural scenery and an idyllic sea view. Despite its proximity to town, the short ten-minute drive transports you to an area where life moves with a gentler cadence and mornings begin not with traffic rumbling along the road below, but with the soft twitter of birdsong.

It is rural tranquillity that does not mean isolation. The location takes full advantage of the island’s compactness. For slow weekends or morning swims, some of the island’s most beloved stretches of coastline are just a short drive away, as are farm shops, popular cafés and highly respectable public houses such as The Goose.

The architecture of Le Jardin du Viton speaks the familiar language of Jersey country houses, with solid proportions and natural materials. The not very well established rule of thumb I use to determine whether a fine property belongs within this genre is asking myself whether I could imagine the Bennet sisters living there. I can confirm that Le Jardin du Viton ticks the box. Of course, in a more modern way, given that candlesticks no longer light the house and the walls are thankfully free of yellowing patterned wallpaper.

Inside, the spaces appear thoughtfully arranged for modern living while retaining the atmosphere expected of a rural home. The principal reception areas carry an inviting sense of scale, large enough to entertain comfortably yet still intimate enough for everyday family life. Natural light plays an important role, with rooms that feel bright without becoming stark. Sunlight pools gently across wooden floors and neutral walls, creating the quiet sense of luxury that the best country houses tend to exude.

The kitchen, often the true heart of homes like this, appears to embody that spirit particularly well. Spacious and welcoming, it feels like a room made for cooking and gathering. It lends itself to morning coffee at the table, friends lingering over a good lasagne, and children drifting in from the garden with muddy

shoes and stories from the afternoon. In houses like this, the kitchen naturally becomes the informal centre of daily life.

Inside, the spaces appear thoughtfully arranged for modern living while retaining the atmosphere expected of a rural home.

Throughout the house, the layout suggests a careful balance between openness and retreat. Generous living areas invite sociability, while potential studies and reading rooms offer moments of calm away from the bustle of family life. Bedrooms are thoughtfully proportioned, with large windows framing views of the surrounding greenery and reminding residents that they remain connected to the landscape beyond the walls.

Bathrooms appear designed with the same sense of ease. Natural materials and gentle tones create spaces that feel restful rather than purely functional, offering somewhere to properly unwind at the end of the day. Taken together, it all suggests that Le Jardin du Viton has been planned with comfort and practical family living carefully intertwined.

The

outdoor spaces are where the property truly shines. The gardens do not feel like an afterthought but rather a central part of the home’s character. It is easy to imagine green fingers having been at work here for years.

The outdoor spaces are where the property truly shines. The gardens do not feel like an afterthought but rather a central part of the home’s character. It is easy to imagine green fingers having been at work here for years. Mature planting provides structure and privacy, while open lawns cater to everything from summer gatherings to quieter evenings outdoors around a fire pit.

In Jersey’s forgiving climate, gardens like these effectively extend the living space of a house for much of the year. One can imagine long summer evenings here with tables set outside beneath soft evening light and the hum of conversation drifting across the lawn, perhaps with the scent of rosemary and lavender carried on the breeze. At other times, it might be an al fresco cup of morning coffee on the terrace or late afternoons spent reading beneath a tree. One of the property’s greatest appeals is that it offers a lifestyle alongside the practicalities of a home.

Le Jardin du Viton, St. Peter £1,495,000 Freehold.

For those drawn to Jersey’s countryside, properties like this offer the space and privacy many people look for without sacrificing the benefits of convenience when it comes to location. If you are looking to move into a slower and more considered way of living, Le Jardin du Viton carries the sort of charm that makes it easy to imagine settling in for the long term. 4
