ROSEMARY BLACKMORE ART
I am a local artist, Rosemary Blackmore, producing original paintings, prints, ceramics and at Christmas time handmade felted wallhangings , bunting and decorations.I am inspired by everything I do and see, from the beauty of Jersey’s coastline, landscape, and the incredible ever changing light .
Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products I am known for my paintings of Jersey cows but also love creating semi abstract seascapes often on a large scale. Small still life subjects feature in my work; colour and light being the thread that unites each painting. I paint in oils sometimes with the addition of a medium , cold wax, which enriches the surface texture and creates depth.
My handmade ceramics in stoneware are sculptural rather than utilitarian and each piece is unique. Poppy seed pods, relief plaques, small houses, pots , and bird sculptures are recurring themes. I indulge my love of working with wool leading up to Christmas. My felted wallhangings are made by layering wisps of wool on a piece of felt, in the same way I use paint. Beautiful colours are achieved this way and anyone investing in a wallhanging, string of bunting or an Advent calendar will own something unique that will last for years.
What’s new/what’s coming up?
I am excited to share that I will again be exhibiting my paintings and ceramics at the Atlantic Hotel in October. As in previous years I will be donating a percentage to a local charity, this time in aid of Dementia Jersey. You don’t have to wait until then to see or buy my work as it’s available throughout the island at lots of different retailers or you can find me at www.rosemaryblackmore.com
SHORELINE REFLECTIONS
I’m David Le Boutillier, a retired teacher and a Genuine Jersey man, the creator of Shoreline Reflections. I design and make artefacts using driftwood and other materials sourced locally on Jersey beaches
Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products
I like to get inspiration from the shape and features of the driftwood I find during many hours spent walking the beaches and bays of Jersey and then make items such as birds, creatures, nautical scenes, as well as more practical pieces like shelving. Last month I enjoyed producing a driftwood Christmas creating decorations and table centres.
What’s new/what’s coming up?
I intend to continue creating my nautical scenes and wild creatures. I have started exploring the human form in driftwood which has proved very popular and I will, of course, continue to paint on driftwood using acrylics and oils. You can find me at Genuine Jersey markets during the summer season or take a look at my facebook page Shoreline Reflections to see more of my work
In each edition we feature some of Jersey’s creators and let them share their creative visions and handmade goods with you lot, our island consumers. If you like what you see, check out genuinejersey.com and hunt them down to support our local industries!

MORTGAGE market update
Words: Lorraine, The Mortgage Shop
Last year the residential property market in Jersey ended on a positive note, although there is still some way to go before we see a return to the number of transactions that were passing through the Royal Court pre-Covid.
HOUSE PRICES MUST CONTINUE TO FALL
Despite the claims by some market commentators that prices have returned to normal, it is apparent that existing house and flat prices must continue be listed at realistic prices to attract the numerous buyers now entering the market and before the significant backlog of instructions to estate agents is reduced.
LISTINGS ON PLACES.JE
Places.je currently have 1518 houses and flats on their site which is a reduction of 10% on the postings at the end of last year.
In summary, First Time Buyers will find 145 flats in the price range up to £300,000, whilst there are a further 395 flats from £300,000 up to £500,000.
For those buyers with a larger deposit and a joint income of approx. £100,000, there are 255 flats and houses, many with parking.

A WIDE CHOICE OF PROPERTY TO SUIT ALL EXPECTATIONS
In such a small environment, Jersey has a wide range of property to suit every income and choice, and with reduced mortgage interest rates, there is every possibility that this year will become very busy.
BASE RATE REDUCTIONS?
Base Rate has recently been reduced to 3.75%, and we now have the seven Jersey mortgage providers offering interest rates that have reduced modestly during the past 18 months. These rates are generally higher than those that are offered in the UK by the local banks’ onshore counterparts, and this is attributable to the Jersey premium that is caused by the higher cost of securing mortgage funds offshore.
The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates on hold this month which will be a brief pause in the Bank’s rate cutting cycle. Financial markets expect two quarter point rate cuts this year, so taking the Base rate to 3.25%, although the cycle of cutting rates after this might well come to an end. Jan 26
A WIDE CHOICE OF INTEREST RATES
Borrowers in the Island have access to over 200 different rate options from which to choose with further permutations on offer to high value customers, or those who can access loyalty rates.
Nothing is certain in respect of the world economy and the impact that this might have on UK inflation and therefore Base Rate, which means that the best advice is still to lock into a five year fixed rate if looking for total security although shorter term fixed rates, or even trackers could be considered if a borrower wishes to take a chance on what might happen in the future.
The Mortgage Shop is Growing as we welcome Lorraine Wright (formerly McLean)
In 2025, The Mortgage Shop has seen consistent growth due to falling asking prices, reduced interest rates and an ever-increasing visibility. The volume of weekly completions confirms the prime position that the brokerage enjoys.
This month, we are delighted that Lorraine has recently joined to head up the team and oversee our experienced mortgage team.
Lorraine joins The Mortgage Shop with a total of 32 years of mortgage lending experience behind her, most recently having completed 12 years managing a significant mortgage provider in the Island and is a great addition to the team and shows our increasing investment into the busy market.
Life’s a beech.
As far as house locations go, a home perched above Rozel isn’t a bad place to set up your forever home. It’s one of those places on the island that truly feels like you turn right for countryside and left for coastal, and Rozel itself differentiates from other areas by the sea in a way that makes it feel like a tucked-away harbour village rather than an open coastline. The enclosed feeling gives it a little port-town atmosphere, mirroring that of a quaint British coastal harbour, and this unique charm is what makes it so loveable by a select few on the island. Stepping into this unique pocket of Jersey can feel like entering an oasis where time stops; confined, safe, predictable and beautiful.
The Beech House most likely got its name from the beech hedge running along the borders of the property, acting as a formal field-boundary windbreak. These were traditionally used around rural properties and field edges in exposed parishes like St Martin to shelter gardens from the wind and provide privacy all year round. Beech hedges have marcescence, meaning they keep their brown leaves throughout winter, only dropping them when new growth pushes through in spring.
Despite the wooden appearance of the exterior, and the potential coastal play on words, the house has long been known by this name. It’s likely it acquired it in the way most Jersey house names traditionally happen. “Which one is it?” “The one with the big beech hedge.” “Oh - Beech House.”
Despite this boundary sheltering the lower garden and growing areas below, the expansive first-floor balcony, connected to the main living areas of the house, occupies an elevated position with clean views of the rolling green landscape in the foreground of a bright blue ocean, looking towards the French coastline. This balcony was formed recently, in 2023, when the property was rebuilt and remodelled. Renovations included constructing a two-storey extension to the south, a decked terrace and balcony to the east, and a detached garage to the south-east of the main house. There were also various external alterations to windows, doors and the installation of timber cladding to the exterior walls.
Despite this boundary sheltering the lower garden and growing areas below, the expansive first-floor balcony, connected to the main living areas of the house, occupies an elevated position with clean views of the rolling green landscape in the foreground of a bright blue ocean, looking towards the French coastline.
The result is a property that is refined, highly functional and designed for modern living. The main living area features an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, forming the heart of the house. The interiors mirror that of a clean, white, beachhouse, and space is well-structured, with large tiled stone flooring, white wooden cabinets and drawers, and a central island equipped with a breakfast bar for mornings that require a little more than just grab-and-go. It also boasts an Everett 120i range cooker, with two ovens, a grill, slow oven and induction hob hidden under the top plate. These ovens are fully electric and have heat-storage qualities like an AGA, but with the added benefit of being controllable. They’re a perk for people who want the country-kitchen look, without the traditional AGA running cost and heat output.
The large windows in this space, including bifolding balcony doors opening onto a substantial sun terrace, create an indooroutdoor flow, funnelling in fresh light. This allows sunrises to be enjoyed over coffee every morning, whether that’s al fresco in summer or under a blanket in winter.
The main house provides four well-proportioned double bedrooms, all of which benefit from en-suite facilities. The principal suite is arranged as a private retreat with a dressing area and direct access to a small, private, sheltered balcony. The en-suite bathroom boasts his-and-her sinks, as well as a stunning standalone bath on an elevated platform. Positioned next to a countryside window, it allows for quiet soaks looking out into the landscape and hearing the birds. A dedicated study is positioned alongside the principal suite, offering an ideal home-working environment or, alternatively, a separate walk-in wardrobe.
Perhaps the icing on the cake of The Beech House is the interconnected one-bedroom cottage, complete with its own kitchen and living space, bedroom and bathroom. With the world we’re going into, it’s the perfect way to support your twenty-something child after graduation whilst they figure out how to move out, or alternatively offers a great space to host extended family and friends.
Basement rooms provide useful storage and gym facilities, whilst the externally, the property offers forecourt parking. The grounds are well-maintained, including a landscaped garden, orchard and adjoining field. There’s plenty of space to create another garage or a swimming pool, should the powers that be in the Jersey planning department consent to the vision.

In great condition throughout, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a home where all the important parts have already been done for you by someone with an eye for style, modern living and functionality. £3,650,000 is a commitment, but it’s lower than the area average for five-bedroom houses, without making concessions on the view.
