It’s All Here

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” - Marcel Proust “

Eid is coming up and, if your travel plans are feeling a little… tentative right now, you’re definitely not the only one. With everything going on in the region, a lot of people are pressing pause on big getaways or choosing to stay closer to home. But it doesn't have to feel like a downgrade. If anything, it’s putting the spotlight on just how much is happening right here in Qatar. From proper staycations to long-stay setups, hotels across the country are stepping things up, all in the name of a full reset.

At the same time, the city isn’t slowing down. Nami Beach is the latest waterfront spot to have on your radar, while projects like Land of Legends are already teasing what’s next. And when it comes to things to do, your calendar won’t stay empty for long: Sneaker Con, the Amir Cup Final, a spotlight on winter sports through the Years of Culture programme… It’s all happening.

On the food front, we’ve been out (obviously) and a few places are worth bookmarking. Saffron at Banyan Tree Doha, MURU at Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay and Sabai Thai at The Westin… Three completely different vibes, all delivering. That same back-to-basics energy is coming through in our interviews too. Greejanand Motee, Cluster Executive Chef at Dusit Doha Hotel and Dusit Hotel & Suites – Doha, talks about reconnecting with natural flavours and finding balance in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Michele Stasi at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail takes a more personal route with pastry, less about trends, more about emotion, texture and keeping things simple (in the best way).

Still craving an escape? Same! So let me take you to Cannes for a minute. I recently checked into Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic, one of those Riviera icons that just gets it right. Think sea views, a private beach and that effortless film-festival energy that never really fades.

If there’s one takeaway from this issue, it’s this: you don’t actually need to go that far. Qatar is doing a pretty solid job of keeping things interesting, even now. Consider this your guide to making the most of it.

LEGENDARY NEW DEVELOPMENT ON THE CARDS

Due to open near Doha in 2028, this massive new waterfront development is part theme park, part resort and very much built for your weekend plans

If you’re picturing a few rollercoasters and a food court, you’re going to need to think bigger. Qatar’s upcoming Land of Legends, currently in the works in Simaisma, about half an hour north of Doha, isn’t being pitched as your standard theme park. The official line calls it a major entertainment destination, but in reality, it sounds closer to a full-on lifestyle playground, spread across a sizeable 650,000sq/m. Yes, there will be rides. And themed zones, seven of them, inspired by the travels of Ibn Battuta, designed to pull you into different worlds rather than just shuffle you from queue to queue. But that’s only one part of the picture. What’s interesting is everything around it. The project folds in hotels that are actually part of the experience, not just somewhere to crash after a long day. Two are already confirmed, the Kingdom and Music hotels, with a combined capacity of around 1,000 rooms. You’ll be able to stay inside the whole setup, meaning this is less ‘pop in for a few hours’ and more ‘book a couple of nights and settle in’. There’s also a strong focus on spectacle. Plans mention

the region’s first moving theatre, alongside an 80-metrehigh adventure mountain with water attractions, plus canals, waterfront walkways and large-scale shows, the kind of place where you wander as much as you plan.

And then there’s the setting. Land of Legends sits within the wider Simaisma coastal development, a huge stretch that’s set to include marinas, resorts and leisure spots. In other words, this isn’t a standalone attraction dropped in the desert, it’s part of a much bigger attempt to create a new go-to hangout just outside the city.

The numbers back up the ambition: around USD3 billion in investment and a target of roughly two million visitors a year once it opens, currently expected in 2028. For anyone in Doha, it could end up reshaping what a weekend looks like. Less mall, more mini-escape, without needing to get on a plane.

MIXOLOGY IN THE MAKING

If you’ve ever fancied becoming a master mixer but didn’t know where to start, Marriott Executive Apartments has you covered with two classes this month.

On May 29, discover the art of non-alcoholic mixology with the Vibrant Sips Class. Learn to shake, stir and serve three uniquely crafted mocktails using exotic ingredients and bold flavours. Or take the Mixology Discovery Class on May 30 to enter the world of elevated blends and craft three signature social sips inspired by timeless classics. After the session, unwind with two full hours of unlimited pours from the curated selection of house favourites, including crafted blends, sparkling notes and smooth infusions. The Vibrant Sips session costs QR79 per person and the mixology class is QR275 per person. Both run from 3pm.✤

FOOTBALL FEVER

The Qatar Football Association has locked in the date: the 54th Amir Cup final will take place on May 9 at the Khalifa International Stadium, one of the country’s most recognisable sporting venues.

A NEW SEASIDE ESCAPE

Nami Beach is the city’s latest excuse to spend the day by the water, without leaving town.

There’s a new beach spot in Doha, and it’s not trying to be wild. Qatar Tourism has teamed up with Loft A Trading And Contracting to open Nami Beach, a more polished, low-key take on the beach day.

Set along Diplomatic Street, it’s the sort of place you swing by for a few hours when you want sea views without the full road trip. There’s sand, yes, but also an infinity pool, cabanas, greenery and all the practical bits that make staying a while easy.

Food-wise, it leans Mediterranean. Nami Greek does exactly what you’d expect with fresh, simple Greek dishes to share, ideally over a long, lazy lunch. And Olive Green keeps things lighter with sandwiches, juices and easy grab-and-go options that won’t slow you down between swims.

The vibe stays firmly on the relaxed side. No alcohol, no jet skis, no bringing your own snacks, which keeps things calm. There’s also a women-only section, Nami Ladies, designed with privacy in mind.

Open daily from 8.30am to 7pm, with entry from QR85 (weekdays) and QR125 (weekends), it’s less about making a scene and more about finding a good spot, settling in and letting the day drift. ✤

GO: VISIT @NAMIBEACHDOHA AND @NAMILADIES ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

If you’re new to it, the Amir Cup is essentially Qatar’s season finale, a knockout competition bringing together 20 clubs from the top two divisions. The final is the big one, but the build-up starts earlier in the month, with quarter-finals running from May 1 to 8 with the following fixtures: Al Rayyan SC vs Al Wakrah SC; Al Duhail SC vs Al Arabi SC; Al Gharafa SC vs Umm Salal SC; and Al Shamal SC vs Al Sadd SC.

For fans, it’s also one of the more accessible matches of the year. Tickets go on sale from May 2, starting at just QR10, with several categories up to QR50. Distribution will be handled through the Road to Qatar app, so it’s worth planning ahead if you want a seat. Beyond the match itself, the stadium is expected to host fan zone entertainment and cultural activities, making it more of a full evening out than just 90 minutes of football. And the setting adds its own layer of context: Khalifa International Stadium, which hosted matches during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, is also marking 50 years since its opening in 1976. All about your team or just here for the vibe, this is one of those nights the city shows up for. ✤

INTIMATE THEATRE

A stripped-back psychological drama lands on the Doha stage this May.

If you’re in the mood for something more gripping than the usual night out, Doha Players company is staging Nine by Jane Shepard from May 13 to 15, theatre that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. The setup is simple but loaded: two women held captive, chained apart, forced to rely on language to survive. What follows is a tightly wound psychological exchange where every word carries weight, and the balance of power can shift in a second. It’s less about action, more about tension, and how far the mind can stretch under pressure.

Described as ‘in the moment’ theatre, Nine leans into intimacy. Seating is deliberately limited, creating a close-up setting that places the audience right inside the dynamic between the two characters. Expect something raw and immersive, with flashes of dark humour and unexpected tenderness cutting through the intensity.

This isn’t background viewing, the themes are adult, and the show is recommended for ages 14+, so it’s one to book with intention. Tickets are available via Qtickets and, with limited seats, this one’s likely to stay firmly on the radar of those who get in early. ✤

YOUR NEXT SNEAKER FIX

Sneaker Con lands in the city for the first time, and it’s free!

If your idea of a good weekend involves fresh kicks and a bit of people-watching, this one’s worth pencilling in. Visit Qatar is bringing Sneaker Con to Doha for the first time, taking over the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center from May 29 to 31.

Billed as one of the world’s biggest sneaker events, it’s essentially a live marketplace meets street culture festival. At the centre is the trading floor, a curated mix of international and regional sellers where you can buy, sell or swap everything from hyped releases to harder-to-find pairs. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, you can get a sense of what’s trending globally (and locally).

Around that core, the event takes a more interactive format. Expect authentication and customisation stations, so you can check or tweak your trainers on the spot, alongside photofriendly installations and pop-ups clearly designed with your camera roll in mind.

It’s not just about shopping, either. The programme mixes in talks with collectors and streetwear figures, plus live moments. Think dance battles, flash mobs and performances that keep things moving throughout the day. There’s also a streetwear alley for brand drops, and sports activations including basketball and skateboarding.

Spread across 7,000sq/m, it’s as much about the wider culture as the shoes themselves, tapping into global street style while giving Doha its own platform in the scene. Entry is free, with tickets available via pre-registration on Platinumlist, one less excuse not to take a look. ✤

AN ICY SPORTING TWIST

A new year-long programme is bringing curling stones, hockey sticks and a slice of Canada’s winter culture to Qatar.

SUMMER JUST GOT BIGGER

Qatar Airways is ramping up its summer schedule, with over 150 destinations from Doha.

Planning a summer escape? The national carrier is expanding its network from mid-June, with flights to more than 150 destinations running through to mid-September.

If you’ve ever watched curling during the Olympics and thought ‘what is going on there?’, Doha is about to give you a proper introduction. The Qatar Winter Sports Committee has partnered with Years of Culture to launch a year-round winter sports programme that’s just kicked off.

Part of the Qatar-Canada-Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, the initiative is designed to make ice-based sports more visible, and more accessible, in a country better known for desert heat than frozen rinks. The lineup includes ice hockey, curling, skating and short track, with a clear focus on younger audiences, community participation and developing local talent over time.

Rather than positioning these as elite or distant sports, the programme leans into a more open, community-led format. Expect a monthly calendar of free events across Doha, mixing exhibition matches with family open houses, essentially relaxed sessions introducing each sport in a way that feels welcoming. There’s also a strong Canadian influence behind the scenes. Widely recognised for its winter sports expertise, Canada brings a layer of coaching knowledge and programme design, shaping how these disciplines are introduced locally.

Things started on April 30 at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena, with exhibition curling and hockey matches followed by familyfocussed introduction sessions. Curious, competitive or just after something different indoors, it’s a rare chance to try winter sports, no minus temperatures required. ✤

For Doha-based travellers, it’s less about one headline route and more about overall choice. The updated schedule brings back seasonal destinations and adds extra frequencies across Europe, Asia and beyond, meaning more flexibility if you’re trying to lock in dates (or change them last minute).

A few highlights: summer routes include spots like Mykonos, Marrakesh, Nice and Malaga, alongside long-haul additions such as Atlanta, Boston and San Francisco in the US. In Asia, destinations like Osaka, Almaty and Tashkent also join the mix for the season.

The timing is clearly geared towards peak travel months, with the schedule running until September 15, right through the usual summer rush. If you already have a booking, the airline says you’ll be notified of any changes directly, and there’s a bit of flexibility built in given the ongoing context: complimentary date changes (subject to availability and fare seasonality), and a refund of the unused ticket value, without penalty, if a flight is impacted.

CURATED WELLNESS OFFERING MAKES QATAR DEBUT

Launched in mid April, the Elevare platform features almost 500 curated organic and wellness products in one easy-to-shop online space.

Heralding a new chapter in conscious living, the Qatari-founded digital wellness destination promises clean, ethical and nutrientrich products, designed to nourish from the inside out.

It went live with nearly 500 organic food, pantry and household items, many of which are available in Qatar for the first time.

Founder Muneera Al-Khulaifi came up with the concept when her personal search for genuinely clean and nourishing wellness products revealed a significant gap in the local and regional market. After years of researching, testing and sourcing products globally, she found it was difficult to access – either locally or regionally – suitable items.

So, she created what was missing.

At its core, Elevare is a digital collection of globally sourced, meticulously chosen products that meet the brand’s uncompromising standards. Every item is personally researched and tested to ensure it is clean, ethical and nutrient-rich, free from unnecessary additives, fillers and harmful ingredients that can disrupt long-term well-being.

Food products available on the platform are free from artificial dyes, preservatives such as BHA, BHT and parabens, artificial sweeteners, glyphosate, MSG, heavy metals, titanium dioxide, palm oil and industrial seed oils including canola, corn, soybean, sunflower, safflower and grapeseed oil.

Beyond the products themselves, Elevare offers something increasingly rare: the gift of time, by removing the need for endless research, label deciphering and trial-and-error purchasing.

The platform empowers customers to embrace wellness with confidence and ease. ✤

SUPPORTING LOCAL LEGENDS

A new community-led running series from trainer giant New Balance aims to shine the spotlight on small local businesses.

Through its official New Balance Run Club (NBRC) in Doha, the brand plans to bring runners to the neighbourhoods that contribute so much to the capital’s unique character. Each run will champion locally loved spots, from laundries and grocery stores to barbers, cafés, restaurants and everything in between.

Operating on the simple concept that Doha knows its local legends best. Runners across Doha are invited to nominate a neighbourhood business they believe deserves a little extra love.

The selected spots will then feature on the weekly routes and become a celebrated touchpoint on Doha’s running map.

The series brings the brand’s ‘Run Your Way’ ethos to life while championing homegrown businesses and celebrating the region’s resilient spirit.

How It Works:

● Runners nominate a local business via the online form

● Weekly community runs will be hosted by NBRC Doha

● Each run will spotlight and support the nominated business

● Runners of all levels and paces are welcome to register for the run and nominate any business of their choice

Commenting on the initiative, Ana Elisa Seixas, Head of Marketing at New Balance MEAI, said: “With this initiative, we want to bring runners and the wider community together and show some love to the small businesses that make Doha feel like home. The city has so many incredible local spots and stories, and we’re excited to spotlight them and to support the businesses that have been affected by the current circumstances.”

Nominations for the ‘Local Legends’ initiative are now open here: https://forms.gle/3rTMbKPbuRPwtVeV9 ✤

TAKING OUR TIME IN GENEVA

Like many of our readers, we at fact are a little obsessed with the beauty and ingenuity of modern timepieces. And with our own regional showcases coming later this year, we decided to get an early indication of what’s to come. We headed to Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the world’s premiere horology showcase, to discover what’s new in the world of watches. Read on to learn about some of our favourite pieces.

TIMELESS AND ELEGANT

A.Lange&SöhnepresentstheSAXONIAANNUALCALENDAR, astylishcompanionforanyoccasion.

With its new self-winding movement, compact case dimensions and a timeless, elegant design, this new timepiece is available in white and pink gold, with a focus on superb legibility. The most important information – time and date – can be easily perceived at first glance. The auxiliary dial at nine o’clock displays the day of the week, and its counterpart on the right-hand side shows the current month. Framed by the seconds display at six o’clock, the Earth’s companion moves across a star-spangled nocturnal sky. The precision of the moon-phase display is exemplary, only needing correction by one day after 122.6 years. The lunar disc in 750 gold is treated with a deep-blue coating process and with the 428 stars, a miniaturised image of the Milky Way is produced. The calendar display is programmed to advance correctly at the transition from the last day of each month to the first day of the next, needing adjustment only once a year: from February 28 ‒ or in a leap year from February 29 ‒ to the first day of March. A new self-winding manufacture movement breathes life into

FINDING YOUR JOY

Break the rules and embrace your joy is the message behind Joia de Baume & Mercier, the newwomen’s collection from the Swissluxuryhouse.

In these pieces, dainty 28mm proportions and the absence of lugs demonstrate the casual everyday elegance of a jewel that tells the time. Black agate adorns the crown and a radiant, silvery sun-satin dial glows and fascinates the eye.

Joia de Baume & Mercier M0A10847

Offering the radiance of a silvery dial and a midnight blue, interchangeable strap, this 7.2mm-thick piece features a polished stainless steel case and bezel with a scratch-resistant, anti-glare crystal and domed stainless steel crown set with black agate. Roman numerals and hands are gold-plated and the buckle is also steel.

Joia de Baume & Mercier M0A10848

With similar attributes to the M0A10847, this watch presents an integrated strap in polished and satin-finished stainless steel with three rows of H-shaped links and a triple folding satinfinished clasp. An interchangeable spring-bar system makes it possible to change the bracelet without the need for tools.

the watch. The L207.1 calibre includes a unidirectional winding central rotor with a centrifugal mass in 950 platinum as well as a classic screw balance that operates at a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour. When fully wound, the power reserve is 60 hours.

CRASHING INTO THE FUTURE

EachyearthewatchmakersatCartierPrivéproducetheirOpus collectionandforits10theditiontheyarecelebratingtheCrash Squelette, among a trio ofemblematic shapes that paytribute toplatinum, themaison’ssignaturematerial.

Created in 1967 in the heart of Swinging London, the unisex Crash watch beats to the same rhythm that animated the city at that time. With its asymmetrical dial, it revolutionised the aesthetic codes of watchmaking. Since its introduction, this watch has always been produced as part of very exclusive series.

This unprecedented design has now been reworked with a new skeleton shape. The Manufacture 1967 MC movement with manual winding has been specially developed to harmonise with the singular lines of this all-new aesthetic, such that all 142 of its components can be housed in the smallest space possible. With this watch, everything goes one step further, and as such the moving parts of the movement become one with the bridges. The distortion appears accentuated, as if the crown has dragged the movement down.

With bridges shaped like Roman numerals, the technique used and finishes presented reflect the maison's watchmaking excellence. This movement construction, a Cartier signature, has been patented. The bridges on the mechanism have been entirely hammered by hand, using a traditional decorating technique requiring almost two hours of high-precision work

A TIMELY ANNIVERSARY

Swiss house Chopard celebrates 30 years of its Fleurier Manufacture with the launch of L.U.C 1860.

The Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier was founded in 1996 on the initiative of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard. For this year’s exhibition, the watchmaker revisited one of its most defining creations with a refined continuation of the L.U.C 1860.

More than a simple anniversary piece, this new edition reflects both continuity and evolution, preserving the aesthetic codes that made the original iconic while incorporating the technical advancements achieved over the past 30 years.

The watch retains its elegantly restrained 36.5mm case and is crafted from Chopard’s proprietary Lucent Steel, offering both durability and a distinctive luminous quality. Its dial, presented in a striking Areuse Blue, draws inspiration from the nearby Areuse River in Switzerland’s Val-de-Travers.

The 18-carat white gold dial is hand-guilloché using a traditional lathe operated by in-house artisans. A sunburst pattern radiates outward, complemented by additional guilloché rings that structure the display. A satin-brushed chapter ring frames polished white gold chevron-shaped hour markers, while Dauphine hands ensure legibility and elegance. At six o’clock, a small seconds subdial maintains the symmetry of the design, notably omitting a date window to preserve visual purity. Inside, the timepiece is powered by the L.U.C Calibre 96.40-

for each piece. The Crash Squelette watch is available in 150 numbered limited-edition pieces.

Equipped with a 22-carat gold micro-rotor, it efficiently winds a twin-barrel system, Chopard’s Twin technology, delivering a 65-hour power reserve.

THE SECRETS OF TIME

Hermès unveiled the Mysterious Mechanisms collection, drawingtheeyetothesecretswithinitstimepieces.

In each watch, fine openings provide a display in which each gear plays a role in a miniature mise-en-scène where function converses with aesthetics. The art of skeletonisation becomes a language in its own right, finding a new expression in the Arceau Samarcande watch. Recalling the maison’s origins, the horse permeates the Arceau Samarcande. The round case, in 750 white gold, gem-set 750 white gold or gem-set 750 5N rose gold, is 38mm in diameter with stirrup-inspired asymmetrical lugs. Time rings out beneath a Saint-Louis crystal dial openworked to form a horse’s head. The crown appears at three o’clock and each piece is engraved with an H. The cutout reveals the new H1927 skeletonised mechanical self-winding movement featuring a custom-made calibre designed and produced exclusively for Hermès.

Under the starry eye of the horse, a game of hide-and-seek leaves room for the imagination, while the sapphire crystal caseback enables the wearer to admire the movement details along with the minute repeater hammers and the micro-rotor, finely adorned with the Duc Attelé motif. The dial comes in either Saint-Louis blue or Saint-Louis white crystal with the horse’s head in either sapphire crystal or diamond-set and rhodium-plated sapphire crystal. The

INNOVATION TEMPERED BY TRADITION

With the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 in titanium, Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen introduces its lightesttimepieceinthisline.

In the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 (Ref. IW344904) in titanium, the house achieves the perfect balance between past creations and contemporary accents. The 41mm case and integrated bracelet are crafted entirely from grade 5 titanium, a material prized for its unique combination of strength, corrosion resistance and featherlight feel. Roughly 45% lighter than steel, the material makes this the lightest Perpetual Calendar watch in IWC’s lineup. Inspired by an original design by Gérald Genta, the round bezel, secured by five functional screws, anchors the piece, while the integrated bracelet flows seamlessly from the case via its middle links, ensuring ergonomic comfort and visual continuity. On the finishing, sandblasted planes meet polished edges and satin-finished sides accentuate the geometry. The dial continues this theme of understated sophistication. Rendered in matte grey to match the titanium exterior, it achieves a monolithic effect as if the entire watch were sculpted from a single block of metal. The hallmark Grid structure adds depth and texture. The subdials displaying calendar information are given a circular satin finish and feature a refined azurage along their edges. In the subdial at six o’clock, the single moon disc boasts a detailed azurage background. Both the applied

Arabic numerals are either rhodium-plated or rendered in 5N rose-gilt and the hours studs come in the same materials. Straps match the colours of the watch. The pieces are 28mm in diameter and 4.95mm thick. The 3Hz movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and the timekeeper has a 48-hour power reserve.

metal markers and the hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility.

Powering the watch is the IWC-manufactured 82600 calibre, visible through the sapphire caseback. It is equipped with the brand’s signature Pellaton winding system and enhanced with durable ceramic components.

A FULLY REDESIGNED COLLECTION

Oris revives the Artelier line of urban dress watches with a fully redesigned collection, including the new Artelier Date 38.00mm.

The Artelier line features hallmarks including a taut, modern case, a simple, uncluttered dial and a utilitarian new bracelet design. The dial is available in dark blue, white and chocolate black. It reflects a shift towards simplicity and versatility, suited to modern lifestyles while remaining rooted in classic watchmaking codes.

The Artelier collection was led by 24-year-old designer Lena Huwiler, who set out to create a striking yet universal watch design for her generation. Her vision was to craft a piece that could be enjoyed by those passionate about industrial design, ergonomics, aesthetics and the timeless value of high-quality Swiss Made mechanical watches. That vision is most clearly expressed in the Artelier Date 38.00 mm, which serves as the entry point to the new collection, powered by an automatic mechanical movement, Oris Calibre 733. The signature Oris Red Rotor is visible through the transparent caseback.

With the return of the Artelier line, Oris reintroduces its vision of an urban dress watch design for today’s generation. The multi-piece stainless steel case has a 38mm diameter with a thickness of 10.9mm and the top glass sapphire crystal is domed on both sides with an anti-reflective coating. The

A CONTEMPORARY ICON REBORN

More than half a century after its debut, the celebrated TAG Heuer Monaco enters its next chapter with a new, more ergonomic design, now powered by the in-house automatic Calibre TH20-11.

TAG Heuer redefines the 1969 square icon with an entirely new case design, drawing inspiration from the original reference 1133 launched more than 50 years ago.

A redesign introduced in 1997 was, in many ways, an abstraction of the original TAG Heuer Monaco. Only a few elements were carried over, but the 2026 iteration returns to the original.

The sharp, angular edges have been reinforced. The sapphire crystal is now closer to a true square in form, while the 39mm case, now crafted in grade 5 titanium, extends with gently curved sides. The caseback is a masterclass in ergonomics.

A smaller round central section curves toward the edges, echoing a design feature of the original.

The dial has also been refined and elevated. Typography and text placement ensure absolute legibility, while the contrasting subdials and a combination of finishes introduce depth and character.

Presented in three colourways, the collection includes the signature TAG Heuer Monaco blue, directly inspired by the watch famously worn by Steve McQueen in his 1971 film Le Mans . A refined sunray-brushed and lacquered dark green version draws on the codes of classic British Racing Green.

functions are date and stop seconds and the automatic winding provides a power reserve of 41 hours. Hands are coated in Super-LumiNova for visibility and the strap is available in either dark brown leather with a butterfly clasp or a multi-piece stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp.

GO: Visit oris.ch for more information.

Finally, an elegant black model is housed in a two-tone case of grade 5 titanium and 18-carat 5N rose gold.

At the heart of the watch lies one of the most significant upgrades, the new in-house Calibre TH20-11. Based on the manufacturer’s automatic Caliber TH20-00, it has an 80-hour power reserve and a five-year warranty.

A DARKER EDGE TO A FAMILIAR SHAPE

Time with the Porsche Cayenne Black Edition made one thing clear: the smallest changes often have the greatest impact.

There’s something about a blacked-out Porsche that immediately changes the tone. The Cayenne Black Edition arrived with a sense of intent, its details suggesting more than a simple styling exercise. Over a few days behind the wheel, it quickly became clear this wasn’t just about how it looked but how it carried itself on the road.

From early commutes to longer highway runs, it slipped easily into daily life. It didn’t ask for attention, yet it consistently held it – and more than once, we found ourselves taking the long way without much justification.

Presence, Refined

The Cayenne Black Edition leans confidently into its name, with high-gloss black elements woven throughout the design. The SportDesign front apron, black exterior package and blackfinished Porsche lettering and model designation gave the SUV a more purposeful, focussed look.

Even the finer details stood out. The 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, finished in black with polished surfaces, added contrast without overplaying it, while the tinted HD-Matrix LED headlights brought a sharper, more defined expression to the front. What stood out most to us was how cohesive everything felt. Nothing appeared added for the sake of it. The widened rear stance of the coupé body, paired with clean surfaces and subtle aerodynamic touches, gave the Cayenne a planted, athletic presence that carried well in any setting, whether parked or in motion.

Built Around You

Inside, the Black Edition continues with a more understated, premium approach. Brushed black aluminium trim runs across the dashboard and doors, paired with black leather upholstery covering the seats, steering wheel and centre console.

The 14-way electrically adjustable comfort seats with memory function made it easy to settle into a driving position within minutes. Once set, it stayed that way – no constant readjusting. Just sit, press start and go.

Space was equally impressive. With 554 litres of luggage space expanding when the seats are folded, the Cayenne handled everything we threw at it – including heavy loads, awkward shapes and the kind of packing that somehow looks organised until you close the boot.

The fixed panoramic roof added a sense of openness, while ambient lighting subtly lifted the cabin at night. It all came together in a way that felt premium without becoming overwhelming.

Digital Done Right

Technology in the Cayenne Black Edition felt intuitive from the outset. The central infotainment system responded quickly, with clear menus and a layout that didn’t test our patience levels.

The curved digital instrument display added a modern touch, offering configurable views that kept key information exactly where we wanted it. Voice control and wireless smartphone charging made daily use seamless, while the BOSE surround sound system delivered clear, well-balanced sound throughout,

proving genuinely impressive during our drive. What impressed us most was how everything worked together. Nothing felt buried or overly complicated – it was simply there when needed, which meant we just got on with using it.

Power, Without Pause

Under the bonnet, the Cayenne Black Edition is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 producing 353PS and 500Nm of torque.

Lean into the throttle and it pulls – strong, clean and immediate. There’s no waiting for it – which became clear sooner than expected. The Cayenne gathers speed with a steady surge that quickly turns into serious pace, the run to 100km/h in just under six seconds arriving before you’ve had time to think about it.

The eight-speed automatic transmission keeps everything flowing, shifting quickly and cleanly, while the all-wheel-drive system gives you the confidence to stay on it without hesitation. What stood out most to us was how it held that speed. As the road opened up, it felt planted and eager, encouraging you to keep pushing – and making it surprisingly easy to do so.

Intelligent Protection

Driver assistance systems in the Cayenne Black Edition felt comprehensive without making a point of it. The surroundview camera system and active parking assistance made manoeuvring easier, particularly in tighter spaces.

Lane change assist and adaptive cruise control added confidence on longer drives, while forward collision warning and braking assistance stepped in quietly in busier environments. The HD-Matrix LED headlights also stood out. Their ability to adapt lighting precisely to road and traffic conditions meant visibility remained excellent without drawing attention to themselves.

What we appreciated most was how these systems supported the drive without getting in the way. They were there when needed – and, for the most part, left us to get on with the drive.

A Confident Finish

By the end of our time with the Porsche Cayenne Black Edition,

one thing stood out: this is a vehicle that refines rather than reinvents. It takes everything the Cayenne already does well and sharpens it – visually, dynamically and experientially.

It’s comfortable when you need it to be, engaging when you want it to be and always feels composed. More importantly, it fits seamlessly into everyday life while still delivering those moments that remind you why the Cayenne is not so easy to walk away from. ✤

The Cayenne Black Edition leans confidently into its name, with high-gloss black elements woven throughout the design.”

DESIGNED FOR DRIVING PLEASURE

The latest addition to the Porsche family is the 911 GT3 S/C, promising a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and manual transmission along with the joy of soft-top motoring.

The new model combines a range of ‘driver's car’ qualities that have already delighted customers of the limited-edition 911 Speedster and 911 S/T models.

For the first time, Porsche is introducing a 911 GT3 with a fully automatic convertible roof. The model has been created especially with driving pleasure in mind, combining the lightweight design of the 911S/T with the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre boxer engine of the 911 GT3, producing 375kW (510PS) and 450Nm of torque.

The distinctive wings and doors of the 911 S/T in combination with the black windscreen surround give the new 911 GT3 S/C an unmistakable look. And lightweight materials have been used throughout, such as the carbon fibre bonnet, wings and doors.

In line with its positioning as a driver's car, this special model is available exclusively with a lightweight short-ratio six-speed manual sports transmission. The 911 GT3 S/C is the only open-top variant in the current 911 range that is designed as a pure twoseater (with four-way adjustable sports seats) – reminiscent of the 911 Speedster from 2019. Unlike the Speedster, however, the 911 GT3 S/C is not a limited-edition model. The new Street Style

Package is also available for the 911 GT3 S/C, which allows the vehicle to be tailored even more precisely to individual tastes. ✤

A TRIBUTE TO MOTORSPORT HERITAGE

The iconic 1965 Monte Carlo Rally-winning Mini Cooper S is being celebrated in the form of a new MINI edition.

No other city has motorsport more deeply rooted in its history than Monte Carlo. MINI has enjoyed tremendous success within the principality, particularly in 1965, when the legendary Mini Cooper S, driven by Timo Mäkinen and co-driver Paul Easter, took victory at the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.

At the time, the car was praised for its innovative technology, elegant performance and agility under extreme weather conditions. Now the car maker has replicated and modernised that in the form of the new MINI 1965 Victory Edition.

The new edition is offered for the MINI John Cooper Works model which has an impressive 231hp and a maximum torque of 380Nm, sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

In homage to the legendary motorsports colours of the 1960s, Chili Red exterior paintwork is accentuated by a white trim stripe extending from bonnet to roof and rear. As an exclusive trademark, a white ‘52’ graphic adorns both sides of the vehicle –echoing the 1965 original.

Inside, the striking door sill showcases white 1965 writing on a red and black background and each model of the edition features a dedication on the inside of the door reflecting information about

the bygone rally.

The interior is based on the traditional JCW colour palette and the familiar JCW-Trim with edition-specific details. ✤

A SPORTY NEW SALOON

MG Motor Middle East has introduced its latest model for the region, the 2026 MG GT featuring enhanced design and technology.

Sharper styling, enhanced powertrain performance, a more premium interior and an expanded safety suite are all brought together under the tagline: ‘The Rebel, Reborn’.

The first-generation MG GT built a strong following among drivers who demanded sporty style without compromise and the new model honours that legacy while pushing further in every dimension. Inspired by MG’s storied motorsport heritage, it blends dynamic performance with agile handling and a confident, road-commanding design, powered by a choice of two MEGA Tech engines.

The 1.5L Turbo produces a maximum 168hp and 275Nm of torque, paired with an all-new Next-Generation DCT gearbox. The 1.5L naturally aspirated unit delivers 109hp and 140Nm of torque, matched to a new Intelligent CVT transmission for a composed, fuel-efficient drive. Both are front-wheel drive.

On the outside, the MG GT makes an immediate statement. A bold waterfall-inspired grille with vertical detailing leads the front, complemented by functional side air ducts and sharp LED headlamps. The coupe-style roofline flows into an aerodynamic ducktail, while split 3D LED racetrack tail lamps create a distinctive night-time signature. A wide 1,842mm stance and low hood reinforce its athletic proportions, with Turbo variants riding on 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Inside, a floating 10.25-inch HD touchscreen and fully digital instrument display keep all key information within easy reach, while an aircraft throttle-style gear shifter and turbine-style dual air vents reinforce the sporting intent. The cabin is finished in dual-tone trims with extensive soft-touch materials throughout, and higher trim levels add a power-adjustable driver’s seat and wide-opening electric sunroof.

The new MG GT offers a strong blend of technology and safety across three trim levels, starting with the 1.5L COM. Key features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry with push-button start, and a comprehensive

suite of safety systems including Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and Emergency Brake Assist.

The 1.5T COM introduces a turbocharged powertrain alongside added convenience features such as a 360-degree camera and electric sunroof, while the range-topping 1.5T LUX offers a more premium cabin and advanced driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Traffic Jam Assist – making it the most comprehensively equipped MG GT to date.

MG GT customers can also benefit from a six-year / 200,000km warranty (whichever comes first), available across the Middle East. Reflecting MG’s confidence in the quality and durability of its vehicles, it provides added peace of mind throughout the ownership journey. This is further supported by MG’s established aftersales network, including regional spare parts warehouses in Dubai and Jeddah, ensuring high parts availability and efficient service across key markets. ✤

As the top-tier model in the latest lineup from Samsung Electronics, the Galaxy S26 Ultra arrived with big expectations. After spending a few days with it, what stood out wasn’t just its power, but how naturally it fits into everyday life. It feels less like a device you operate and more like one that quietly works alongside you.

Privacy Built In

The 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED display is as sharp and fluid as you’d expect, but the real headline is the built-in Privacy Display — an industry first for smartphones. With a quick toggle, the screen narrows its viewing angles so dramatically that even someone standing right next to you can’t clearly see what’s on display. It’s subtle in use, but incredibly effective. The ability to apply it only to certain apps or just notifications makes it feel thoughtful rather than intrusive, and genuinely useful in everyday situations.

Powered to Perform

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, and the difference is immediately noticeable. Everything we threw at it — from multitasking to demanding apps — felt instant. Animations are silky, switching between tasks is seamless, and there’s a sense that the phone is always one step ahead of you. What impressed us most is how consistent the performance is. Even during extended use, it stayed smooth and responsive, backed by improved thermal management and efficiency that comfortably carried us through a full day without concern.

The S Pen: Small Tool, Big Impact

One of the Ultra’s defining features remains the built-in S Pen. Having a pen that’s always there, always charged and ready to go sounds simple, but in practice it becomes indispensable very quickly. We found ourselves using it more than expected — from jotting

Everything we threw at it — from multitasking to demanding apps — felt instant.” “

down notes to navigating with precision. It adds a level of control and creativity that few smartphones can match, and quickly becomes part of how you use the device.

Picture Perfect

The camera system continues Samsung’s reputation for reliability. Photos came out bright, well-balanced and consistently flattering, with improved low-light performance thanks to wider apertures. It’s the kind of camera that makes you confident you’ll get the shot without overthinking it.

Video is equally strong, with impressive stabilisation and features like Horizon Lock helping keep footage smooth and level, even when moving.

AI: Working Smarter, Not Harder

Galaxy AI is everywhere here, but it rarely feels overwhelming. From call screening to intuitive photo editing and smart suggestions, it quietly reduces the effort needed to get things done throughout the day.

Our Final Call

The Galaxy S26 Ultra doesn’t rely on one standout feature — although it certainly has a few. Instead, it delivers a refined, intelligent experience where everything just works.

After a few days, it became the kind of device we reached for without thinking — a clear sign of how easily it fits into everyday life ✤ GO: VISIT SAMSUNG.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

LIGHTING UP THE EVENTS SPACE

fact caught up with Raluca Iacob, partner in Qatar’s homegrown organic candle brand Candeel and founder of Rallou Wicks, the visionary concept bringing candle-making to the social space, as she shared information about the brands and her hopes for the future.

You are originally from Romania and have built your career across Qatar and the UAE. What first brought you to the Gulf region, and how did your background in hospitality and lifestyle shape the work you do today?

I originally came to the Gulf region from Romania through hospitality. At the time, I was drawn by the scale of the industry, the energy of the market and the opportunity to be part of concepts that were evolving very quickly. Qatar was where I really built my career and learned how much guest experience matters. Working across restaurants, lounges, hotels and lifestyle venues taught me that people don't only remember a product — they remember how a place made them feel. That way of thinking has shaped everything I do today, whether it is hospitality consulting, concept development, workshops or candles.

Your background is strongly rooted in hospitality, guest experience and concept development. How did that eventually lead you into candles, and how did your work with Candeel later inspire the creation of Rallou Wicks?

My background has always been rooted in hospitality, guest profiling and concept creation. I spent years thinking about details like atmosphere, emotion, service flow, music, scent and how guests interact with a space. Candles came quite naturally from that because scent is such a powerful part of memory and experience. When I started working with Candeel, I saw that candles could become much more than a retail product. They could become part of gifting, workshops, events and even hotel activations. That is what later inspired me to create Rallou Wicks in Dubai — a concept built more around the social and experiential side of candle-making.

For readers discovering the brands for the first time, how would you describe the difference between Candeel and Rallou Wicks, and how do they complement each other?

Candeel and Rallou Wicks are very connected, but they each have their own identity. Candeel is a Qatar-born candle brand focussed on products, gifting, retail and workshops. It has a strong visual identity and a very loyal audience. Rallou Wicks, on the other hand, was created in Dubai as more of an experienceled concept. It focusses on candle-making workshops, hotel collaborations, private events and lifestyle activations. One is more product-driven, while the other is more experience-driven, but together they complement each other very naturally.

After seeing the success of Candeel in Qatar, you later expanded the workshop concept through Rallou Wicks in Dubai. How have people responded to these experiences, and why do you think they have become so popular?

People have responded very positively because the workshops offer something different. They're not only about making a candle — they are about taking a break, connecting with people, being creative and having an experience that feels relaxed and memorable. A lot of people come alone and leave having met new people, while others come with friends, colleagues or family. I think they have become popular because people are looking for experiences that feel personal, social and meaningful rather than just another dinner or night out.

You have organised workshops, private events, hotel collaborations and brand activations across Qatar and the UAE. Which experiences have been the most memorable for you so far, and what do you think makes an event truly successful?

Some of the most memorable experiences have been hotel collaborations, private group workshops and brand activations where we could really tailor the experience to the audience. I have loved creating workshops inside cafés, luxury hotels and wellness spaces because each venue brings a completely different atmosphere. For me, what makes an event successful is when people leave feeling like they experienced something special. It is never only about the set-up or the candles themselves. It is about the mood, the energy in the room, the small details and how guests feel from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave.

Looking ahead, what are your future plans for both Candeel and Rallou Wicks, and how do you see the brands evolving over the next few years?

I would love to continue growing both brands in different ways. For Candeel, the goal is to strengthen the retail side, expand gifting and create a larger concept store that combines candles, workshops and a lifestyle café element. For Rallou Wicks, I want to continue building partnerships with hotels, wellness spaces, cafés and lifestyle venues across Dubai and beyond. I also see both brands growing more into private events, brand collaborations and immersive experiences. Long-term, I would love for them to become recognised names in the region for both premium candles and creative experiences. ✤

FRENCH CUISINE WITH A CREOLE SOUL

Greejanand Motee, Cluster Executive Chef, Dusit Doha Hotel and Dusit Hotel & Suites –Doha, talks tradition, heritage and reviving natural flavours.

You’re a native of Mauritius, where French culinary heritage meets rich Creole tradition. How has your background influenced your own personal food taste and the dishes you create across your kitchens?

My culinary identity is deeply rooted in Mauritius, a place where French culinary discipline meets vibrant Creole soul. Growing up, I was surrounded by fresh spices, seasonal produce and bold, layered flavours. I was not only cooking with these ingredients, but also harvesting and selling them in local markets, which gave me a very raw and authentic connection to food. This background shaped my palate to value balance, richness with freshness, spice with acidity and technique with emotion. In my kitchens today, I translate this into a modern expression of Creole cuisine. French techniques form the foundation, elevated with tropical elements. It’s about creating dishes that feel refined, yet soulful luxury that still feels like home.

One of the things you’re particularly known for is wellnessfocussed cuisine. Can you explain why this is important to you and where can guests find your healthier options at the Dusit properties?

Wellness is important to me because food is not only about taste, it’s about how it makes you feel. As chefs, we have a responsibility to nourish, not just satisfy. For me, it begins with nutrition and ingredient integrity. Using fresh, seasonal products and preserving their natural value, while reducing unnecessary processing, fats and sugars. Today, we are slowly losing connection with natural flavours. Food is becoming heavier, more processed and overcomplicated. My philosophy is to bring that back, allowing ingredients to speak for themselves. Wellness is about balance. Creating dishes that are satisfying yet light, indulgent yet clean,

so guests leave energised, not overwhelmed.

At Antoinette’s, guests can find these options, with lighter menu sections, clean proteins, fresh vegetables and mindful cooking techniques.

Which herbs and spices do you consider the most important in any kitchen and why?

Herbs and spices are the soul of the kitchen, they define identity. I rely on thyme, coriander, curry leaves, ginger, garlic and chilli. Each brings depth and character: thyme for earthiness, ginger for warmth, chilli for energy and coriander for freshness. My approach is always balance, enhancing flavours without overpowering the dish.

What is your signature dish at the Dusit properties, how was it developed and what, in your opinion, makes it popular?

My signature is Chilli Lime Shrimps. This dish is a true reflection of my roots and journey.

It features fresh island shrimps, cooked in a vibrant chilli, garlic, coriander and lime sauce – bold, aromatic and full of life. The flavours are inspired by the ingredients I grew up with in Mauritius: fresh herbs, spices, citrus and natural depth that comes from simple, honest cooking.

It’s a popular dish because the richness of the sauce is balanced with acidity and heat, creating a dish that is both comforting and expressive. It’s designed to be shared, to be experienced, not just eaten.

We always serve it with freshly baked bread, allowing guests to fully enjoy the sauce, soaking in every layer of flavour.

For me, this dish is more than just a recipe, it’s a memory. It represents where it all started, from harvesting fresh ingredients to building my culinary identity today. ✤

SWEET MEMORIES AND BOLD CREATIONS

For Michele Stasi, Executive Pastry Chef at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail, a great dessert must do three things: balance flavour, surprise the palate, and make people smile. A belief he traces back to watching his grandmother bake in Puglia.

You were born in Puglia, a region deeply rooted in culinary tradition. What childhood memories most shaped your passion for pastry?

Honestly, it all started at home. In Puglia, food is such a big part of everyday life, it's how we connect. I grew up surrounded by the smell of freshly baked desserts, especially on Sundays or during holidays. I remember standing next to my grandmother, watching her work with such care and with simple ingredients. Pastry, for me, has always been about emotion as much as technique.

You’ve earned multiple international recognitions throughout your career. What does this chapter at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail represent for you today?

This chapter feels exciting and full of energy. Doha is such an international place, and working at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail pushes me to think differently every day. I get to meet guests from all over the world, each with different tastes and expectations, and that really inspires creativity. At this stage of my career, it's less about awards and more about sharing what I’ve learned, building a strong team and creating memorable experiences for people.

Can you tell us more about your signature dessert Caviar Tiramisù. How was it developed and what makes it popular? The idea was to take something everyone knows, tiramisu, and give it a twist that surprises you. I didn’t want to change its soul, just the way you experience it. The caviar on top of it is playful, it adds texture and a bit of theatre, with those little bursts of cocoa flavour. I think people love it because it feels familiar but also new at the same time. There is a bit of fun in it, and I like desserts that make people smile.

Is there a current pastry trend you love, or one you consciously avoid?

I try not to follow any trend because it often tends to disappear immediately. I really like the shift towards lighter desserts, less sugar and more focus on real flavours. That’s something I believe in. Of course, presentation matters, but at the end of the day, if it doesn’t taste amazing, it doesn't work. For me, the goal is always to balance flavour, texture and a bit of emotion in every bite. ✤

THAI ON HIGH

Sirine Boudjadi finds her way to Saffron at Banyan Tree

a Thai dining experience designed as a quick escape when travel isn’t on the cards.

Doha,

What I love about Doha is how easy it is to travel without actually leaving the city. Especially right now, when all you want is to escape somewhere far away and switch off. Saffron, one of the five restaurants at Banyan Tree Doha at La Cigale Mushaireb, does exactly that. Set high up on the 24th floor, the room leans heavily into atmosphere. Think warm lighting, polished wood floors and a palette of gold and amber tones that instantly soften the space. Oversized sculptural chandeliers hang low over the tables, while mirrored ceilings bounce the light around. Seating is plush, with deep orange banquettes and cushioned chairs spaced out enough to keep things calm.

There’s a clear attention to detail throughout: colourful parasols mounted on wooden panels, candles, floral arrangements and a live traditional musician positioned near the entrance. At intervals, she shifts into a short, graceful Thai dance, subtle, elegant and just enough to elevate the experience. Between the lighting, the scent in the air and the use of natural materials, it’s very much giving spa energy and we’re here for it.

A Ritual-Led Start

Before any food even lands, there’s a quick hand-cleansing ritual done tableside. Warm jasmine-infused water is gently poured over our hands as we hold them above a bowl. It’s presented as a way to prepare for eating. I think more restaurants should embrace this kind of ritual as it instantly makes the whole experience feel more considered from the start. As we’re waiting for the dishes, a selection of rice and saffron crackers is brought to the table with a trio of dips. There’s a green eggplant and chilli dip with a bit of heat, a tomato-based sauce that leans richer and a coconut milk mix with chicken and prawn that’s smoother and slightly sweet.

Tom Yum Goong is the first to be served. It arrives in a generous bowl set over a small candle warmer, keeping the broth steadily hot throughout. The soup is slightly opaque and full-bodied, with a balanced mix of lemongrass, galangal and lime. Plump prawns and soft mushrooms add texture, while the overall profile stays clean and rounded. A solid, well-executed opener. Right after comes a mixed fruit popsicle (watermelon on this occasion, with flavours that rotate). Light, icy and clean, it cuts through the lingering heat of the soup and resets the palate. A simple but effective transition before moving on.

Between Finesse And Crunch

Starters land with the Chor Muang Phuang Chomphu, violet and blue dumplings shaped like flowers, very much playing the visual card. They’re soft, slightly chewy, with a chicken and water chestnut filling that adds a bit of crunch, but overall, the flavour stays quite subtle, just slightly sweet. There’s a light chilli sauce on the side if you want to bring a touch more lift. The Goong Sarong Buer Tod shifts things up. Prawns wrapped in fine noodles and fried until golden and crisp. More direct, more satisfying. The crunch hits first, then the tender prawn, with a sweet mango-chilli dip cutting through and keeping it balanced. For mains, Chu Chee Pla Salmon goes all in on richness. The fish is grilled and topped

with a thick, creamy red curry sauce, smooth, slightly sweet, with a gentle heat and a strong coconut base. It’s indulgent, and very much led by the sauce. Alongside, rice is served tableside from a dedicated trolley with four options revealed one by one (jasmine, saffron-infused, wholegrain and brown), adding a little interaction to the whole thing. Next to it, Phad Thai Goong Sod keeps things more familiar. Served on a banana leaf, the noodles are glossy, well-coated, tossed with prawns and crushed peanuts. It leans slightly sweet, with a squeeze of lime bringing the balance back and keeping it from feeling too heavy.

Absolutely no Thai meal would feel complete without the obligatory mango sticky rice: Khao Niew Mamuang & I-Tim Kati. Here, it lands as a composed, good-looking plate: neatly fanned slices of ripe mango over a tight mound of glossy sticky rice, finished with a generous pour of coconut cream. The balance is as expected, sweet, slightly tangy, with a scoop of coconut ice cream on the side keeping things cool and reinforcing the dessert’s creamy profile. Alongside it, the Tub Tim Krob Gup I Tim Kati clearly plays with presentation. It’s served in a hollowed coconut set on a tray lined with leaves and fresh flowers, with a layer of cold mist drifting around the base. Underneath, it’s a mix of ruby-red water chestnuts in chilled coconut milk, the chestnuts delivering a firm, almost crunchy bite against the smooth liquid. There’s added freshness from herbs and fruit, while, once again, coconut ice cream ties everything back to the same flavour base. Very interesting on texture!

More than the food, it’s the pace, the rituals and the atmosphere that do the work at Saffron. It’s not quite a ticket out of Doha, but it gets close enough. ✤

ONE TABLE, TWO MOODS

Sushi or steak? Here, it’s both. At MURU, Sirine Boudjadi checks out the new sharing menu that moves from clean, sharp bites to full-on fire.

Located inside Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, MURU comes with serious backing. It’s the city outpost of Mauro Colagreco, the Michelin-starred chef behind Mirazur. But this isn’t a formal, whitetablecloth situation. It leans into a more playful, high-energy take on Latin flavours, built around bold, crowdpleasing dishes. The whole concept is rooted in elemental cooking, fire, smoke, raw and flame-led techniques, with a strong Latin American thread running through the menu. Tonight, I’m here to try the new Sushi & Steak offering, which pretty much sums up the MURU approach. On one side, clean, precise sushi. On the other, properly charred cuts coming off the fire, smoky and full of flavour.

It’s already a bit of a moment as I step out of the lift. Dark, enclosed, slightly dramatic, with this floral pattern creeping across the walls and floor, and a soft glow overhead. Then it opens up. Warm woods, curved lines, low, comfortable seating. Rounded tables, soft banquettes, little corners that feel made for settling in. The lighting shifts depending on where you sit, which keeps things interesting. The bar leans more into late-night mode. Lower lights, hanging greenery, bottles lined up… it’s giving ‘one more mocktail energy’ without ever saying it.

The Omakase Experience

It doesn’t take long for my table to start filling up. A full omakasestyle platter lands on crushed ice – layered, detailed, slightly extra but in a good way. On it, a selection of nigiri, two of each, and signature rolls, four pieces each. I start with the nigiri. The salmon

with teriyaki, tobiko and tempura flakes is soft, slightly sweet, with a bit of crunch. The hamachi with miso and jalapeño brings a gentle heat that builds without taking over. The tuna with ponzu gel is the freshest one, sharp, easy and gone quickly. Then I move on to the signature rolls, and it gets a bit more indulgent. The Spicy Tuna with cucumber and kimchi sauce has more kick than expected. The Flaming Salmon, with dried tomato, shrimp and torched salmon, is richer, slightly smoky and very easy to keep eating. The Beef Maki works very well with enoki mushroom, beef and parmesan foam. Last but not least, the shrimp with avocado, tempura crunch and spicy mayo is the easiest one, familiar, but done properly. It’s fresh, well executed and the best way to start the meal.

The Fire Experience

It’s now time for the meat, and it’s very much the big moment. Served on a thick wooden board, still warm, slightly smoky, with herbs, grilled vegetables and citrus scattered around, it looks generous without being overdone. I have different cuts to play with: beef tenderloin, Angus rib-eye and Angus picanha. It’s generous and a bit messy, in a good way. The tenderloin is soft, almost too easy to eat. The rib-eye is where the flavour sits, richer, more marbled, with that proper grilled edge. And the picanha has that bit of bite and fat that makes it the one I keep going back to. The sauces are worth it too. I get béarnaise, chimichurri and mushroom, easily my favourite. Creamy, deep, slightly earthy, it just works perfectly with the meat. Add fries on the side, a bit of grilled corn and Portobello, and suddenly you’re fully in it. By the time dessert rolls around, I’m not looking for anything heavy. After that much fire, butter and everything in between, the last thing I want is another rich situation. So, I’m quite glad

they keep it simple. A chilled fruit platter lands with watermelon, melon, berries, grapes and citrus, all clean, fresh, properly cold. exactly what I need at that point. Alongside it, a couple of scoops of sorbet (strawberry and mango for tonight), light, smooth and not overly sweet. It resets everything. And more importantly, it lets you finish the meal without feeling like you’ve completely overdone it. Which, at this stage, is appreciated. ✤

ESCAPE TO A QUIET OASIS

No flights needed. At Sabai Thai in Doha, AMS finds a slice of Thailand, from the warm welcome to the flavours that transport you far beyond the city.

We pulled up to the valet at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa and stepped into the calm of the lobby, before making our way out towards the gardens. It was quieter there, the noise of the city softened by water and greenery. Tucked away at the back sat Sabai Thai, almost hidden from view. A gong marked our arrival, followed by a large carved wooden door that felt like it belonged in Chiang Mai rather than Doha. On the other side was Bann, greeting us with a traditional Thai Sawadee kha and the kind of warmth that made us feel instantly welcome.

And that was the thing. From the moment we stepped inside, it stopped feeling like Doha altogether. It reminded us of evenings in Thailand when you wander into somewhere softly lit, a little tucked away, where time slows and everything feels that bit more relaxed. The location deserves a mention too. So many of Doha’s wellknown dining spots are centred around West Bay or The Pearl, so for those of us living on the other side of the city, this felt like a real treat to have so close by. Especially on a Tuesday evening after a working day, the convenience of being able to slip into somewhere like this without a long drive made it even more appealing. The restaurant was filled with dark woods, carved details and warm low lighting, which made it feel cosy and inviting. The team, all Thai, gave instant authenticity. There were different pockets to the room too. It had tables near the open kitchen if you liked the buzz, softer corners for longer dinners, and window-side seating looking out over the water if you wanted something calmer. Along one side, a separate smoking area kept things practical without intruding.

We were seated beside the kitchen, which we didn’t mind at all. There’s something reassuring about watching chefs at work, the

rhythm of it. Woks flaring, quick movements, the low hum of a kitchen that knows exactly what it’s doing. Around us, a handful of midweek diners were settled in, conversations flowing, the odd burst of laughter cutting through. Our waitress, Phit, looked after us throughout the evening with a calm grace and warmth that felt wonderfully Thai. She was so attentive, poised and never overbearing.

A Menu That Delivers On Every Level

In Doha we’re spoiled for food choices, but it had been a good few weeks since we’d had Thai food, so we were really looking forward to this. We were hungry too, which always helps. Before we knew it, prawn crackers had arrived with sweet chilli sauce. Light, airy and faintly salty, they had just enough sweetness and heat to keep us reaching back in without thinking. What is it about prawn crackers that always makes you want one more?

To start, the vegetable dumplings set a gentle tone. Delicate, almost translucent, they opened up to a fresh filling that felt clean and healthy. The green sauce added a lively edge that brought the dish to life. Shortly after came the prawn tempura, hot and crisp, the batter thin enough to give way instantly to soft, sweet prawns. A proper crunch, then that tender, almost buttery middle. Moving on to the mains, the green curry with grilled Black Onyx Angus beef was where the meal really stepped up. You could smell it before it landed, with coconut, spice and something slightly sweet. The sauce coated rather than drowned, clinging to the slices of beef. The meat itself had that deep grilled edge, slightly charred, giving contrast to the creamy curry. Heat built slowly, never overwhelming, balanced by basil and coriander root that kept it bright. With jasmine rice, it became one of those dishes you don’t rush.

We both remarked how some restaurants have either the atmosphere or the food, and people often forgive one for the other, but this genuinely had both. Soft Thai music drifted through the room, while the water shimmered outside the window. The whole place felt deeply relaxing, the sort of restaurant where a midweek dinner can quietly turn into an escape. After that, the whole fried sea bass arrived. Breaking into it revealed soft, flaky flesh that almost fell away under the fork. The black pepper sauce added gentle warmth, while the tamarind cut through with a tangy sweetness that lifted everything. It was messy in the best way, the kind of plate you get stuck into rather than pick at.

For dessert, things ended on a comforting note. Banana fritters were warm and soft, the outside just crisp enough, giving way to something almost creamy inside, offset by the cold vanilla ice cream. Then came the mango sticky rice, a dish that can so easily go wrong if the ingredients aren’t right. Simple on paper, but done properly here. The mango was ripe and fragrant, the rice soft and slightly chewy, soaked in coconut cream that tied everything together without becoming heavy. Before we left, we chatted with Bann about the restaurant, its loyal following and favourite dishes.

She spoke highly of the business lunch, which has clearly become a staple for those nearby looking for something polished and reliable during the working week. It made perfect sense. The setting, the warmth of service and the quality of the food all lend themselves

just as easily to a smart lunch as they do to a relaxed evening meal. By the time we left, pushing that same heavy door open again, it felt like we’d been away somewhere else for a couple of hours. If you’re looking for your Thailand fix in Doha, with amazing food to match, this is the place to come. You get the whole experience without having to get on a plane. ✤

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

What if living somewhere didn’t come with the usual hassle? Sirine Boudjadi checks in at Swissôtel Corniche Park Towers Doha to see how long-stay living makes everyday life easier.

Ialready live in West Bay, Doha’s main business district, just minutes from the Corniche, so checking into a hotel here wasn’t exactly on my radar. But I was curious: what does a long stay in a place like Swissôtel Corniche Park Towers Doha actually feel like, especially when it’s in your own neighbourhood? Check in was smooth and, from the lobby, with its graphic marble floors and touches of greenery, I already started to pick up on the hotel’s identity. Swissôtel is all about vitality, Alpine rhythms and finding your balance. That’s all it takes to win me over!

Settling In

Upstairs, the hotel has fully serviced apartments overlooking the water, spacious and easy to settle into. You have everything you’d expect for a long stay: a proper workspace, high-speed wi-fi, and a layout that allows you to fall into a routine. And there’s also the practicality, which makes everything easier. Housekeeping twice a week, utilities included, parking sorted, and a 24-hour concierge, all the small frictions of daily life are taken out of the equation. I stayed in a Deluxe Studio Apartment and the first thing that caught me was the view. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame both Doha’s skyline and the sea, and they do a lot of the work, even more at night when the city lights start to flicker through. The apartment leans into a polished, contemporary aesthetic, its palette built around soft creams, warm neutrals and deep greens, with touches of terracotta and brushed brass adding a subtle glow. Curved furniture, like the sofa, softens the sharper architectural lines, while marble and stone surfaces add depth and texture. There’s also a compact but beautifully finished kitchen, with stone countertops and gold-toned fittings.

A Sense Of Community

If you want to take things a bit further, you can also stay as a resident, and that’s where the whole experience shifts a little. Not just the space, but the way people actually live here. There are 121 luxury residences, offering a range of layouts from one-bedroom apartments to spacious four-bedroom duplexes with balconies. What stands out is how effortless it feels to settle in. The apartments are designed with practical, functional spaces that blend seamlessly into daily life, making it easy to feel at home. Each residence features ample living areas, well-appointed kitchens and thoughtful touches that prioritise comfort and convenience. Housekeeping services twice a week ensure you have more time to enjoy your space, and with utilities included and 24-hour concierge, everything runs smoothly without having to worry about the day-to-day logistics. And then there’s the community side. It’s not something forced—it just develops naturally over time. It starts with little things, like the opportunity to join Arabic classes, a casual class between residents and team members; participate in intimate gatherings or see families staying longer, creating an atmosphere where people recognise one another, and friendships form. People start recognising

each other, kids grow up in the same environment, and it builds that familiar feeling without trying too hard. The residents-only spaces also play a key role in fostering this sense of community. From a private gym to a quieter pool, these areas feel more personal, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustle of everyday life. it just feels more low-key, more yours.

A lot of this sense of belonging comes from the team. Khouloud, who manages the residences, is deeply invested in the residents’ experience. She takes the time to personally welcome newcomers, adds thoughtful touches and occasionally surprises people with small gifts or gestures of kindness. Her attentiveness helps create an atmosphere where people feel seen, valued and connected to the community. It makes all the difference in making the space feel like home.

I also tried the private screening room and loved it. It’s tiny, like 10 seats, more cosy than a proper cinema. I had it completely to myself, streamed what I wanted, just chilled. Popcorn, tea, snacks, detox water… even better than the cinema. The screening room opens onto a lounge area where you can just as easily work, read or hang out. It adds to that feeling of actually living there, moving between spaces depending on your mood, instead of staying in one place. And when you want a change, you also get access to Doha Sands Beach (even for longer stays), which is perfect for weekends, when the pool starts to feel a little too familiar.

Staying On Track

Wellness is part of the deal when it comes to long stays. A proper fitness and wellbeing space should just come with it. I had already experienced the Pürovel Spa & Sport before (where long stays come with up to 30% savings on treatments) but this time, I got to explore another side of it at the Technogym-equipped fitness space. I had one of my best personal training sessions with Godfrey. Even as someone who trains regularly, I was pushed out of my comfort zone, discovering new exercises and going further than I’d have on my own. I’m pretty sure Godfrey works actual miracles when it comes to physical transformations. Sarah, one of the two other coaches, was also around during the session, and her energy carried me through to the very end. Super encouraging, always stepping in with the right cues and little adjustments, she made the whole thing feel easier (even when it really wasn’t). If you’re looking to step it up, they offer packages of five, 10 or 20 sessions, a great structure to be consistent.

Dining, Done Right

If you’re actually living somewhere like this, the food needs to keep up. And here, it really does. (There are also up to 30% savings on dining, which doesn’t hurt.) During my stay, I tried Azal which easily ranked among some of my favourite dining experiences in Doha. That evening, I technically had the choice between in-room dining and heading downstairs, but it took me about five seconds

to decide. One look at the menu and I was sold. Persian flavours are already a favourite of mine, so I went in with high expectations… and it absolutely delivered. The concept behind Azal is rooted in its name, which in Farsi evokes the idea of eternity, something without beginning or end. From the start, it felt more like being welcomed into someone’s home than dining in a restaurant. We were greeted with a fragrant welcome drink, a delicate blend of lemon, rose water and honey. From there, it turned into one of those meals where you just keep ordering because everything sounds too good not to try.

We went for a mix of classics and comfort dishes. The Borani Bademjan (roasted eggplant with yoghurt and a hint of garlic) and Mast Khiar, with cucumber and mint, were both fresh and perfectly balanced. Warm Nan Sangak (stone-baked whole wheat bread) on the side made it all even better, especially with the Kashke Bademjan, more indulgent with its charcoalgrilled eggplant, walnuts and crispy onions. Then came the Ash Reshteh, easily one of the highlights of the night. Thick, comforting, full of herbs, beans, lentils and noodles, with that slightly tangy finish and crispy onions on top… I could have gone back for a second (or third) bowl without even thinking about it. For mains, the Mahiche really stood out.

Slow-braised lamb shank, incredibly tender, paired with Zereshk Polow, saffron steamed rice with barberries that bring just the right amount of sweetness.

Good to know: Azal also does a business lunch, ideal when you want to step out between calls or meetings and sit down properly. The format is simple (two starters + one main), with the only real difference being the drinks: soft drinks if you’re keeping it efficient, or a more elevated pairing if you want to slow things down a bit. Perfect to make your workday feel less grab-and-go, more I have my spot

And for those leaning towards laid-back, easy-going vibes, The Quarter, an all-day-dining favourite, is well worth a visit. They’ve just launched a delightful, family-friendly brunch with plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained… Can’t wait to give it a try! ✤

A RIVIERA INTERLUDE

A century on La Croisette, and Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes still knows exactly what it's doing. Sirine Boudjadi checks in, and finds suites overlooking the Mediterranean, a private beach and a dining scene that more than lives up to the legend.

Le Majestic opened in 1926 as part of a new wave hitting the Riviera. Cannes was still figuring itself out, European high society was flooding in, and this sleek Art Deco address landed right on cue.

Built on the old Beau-Rivage site, it even did a stint as a military hospital during the war, before pivoting to what it does best: being the natural home of the Cannes Film Festival crowd. And what a crowd. Just four minutes from the Palais des Festivals, it's where the industry gravitates: Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve, Monica Bellucci, Nicole Kidman, Sophie Marceau, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman. The list reads like a century's worth of call sheets. Walk in and you get it immediately. Over 2,500 black-andwhite portraits of cinema icons line the walls across all seven floors. A constant reminder that this place has seen things, starting in the lobby. Oliver at reception sorted me out quickly and warmly, and, after an overnight journey, I was more than ready to head straight up to my room, or rather, my Prestige Terrace Sea View Suite. Seventy-five square metres of calm, sunlit, very Riviera-coded comfort. The palette is soft and understated, warm beige, sandy tones, muted greys, lifted by deep navy accents that echo the sea just outside. At the centre, a king-size bed so comfortable it almost becomes a problem because you never want to leave it.

Natural light floods in through large sliding doors, softened by sheer curtains that move gently with the breeze, creating that effortless indoor-outdoor flow that instantly makes the space feel bigger and slower. The spacious bathroom follows the same logic, with both a bathtub and

a separate shower, plus Guerlain amenities adding a subtle touch of indulgence. The real highlight is the terrace. Opening onto uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean, with the pool just below (heated to 28°C year-round) and palm trees framing the scene, it feels like your own private slice of the Riviera with sun loungers and a dining table. I also loved the welcome treats waiting on the table. Fresh fruit, delicate petits gâteaux… and a chocolate reproduction of the hotel’s façade, almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

The hotel features 349 rooms and suites, many of which were fully renovated and unveiled in early 2025. But for those looking to take things further, Le Majestic is also home to a few standout signature apartments. At the top of the new wing sits the Majestic Penthouse, a 450sq/m private residence designed for next-level Riviera living. Its 150sq/m terrace is the real showstopper, complete with an 11-metre outdoor pool overlooking the entire bay of Cannes. There’s also the Christian Dior Suite, which leans into a completely different universe. Designed by Dior’s longtime interior architect, it feels like stepping into the maison itself, with herringbone parquet floors, Louis XVI-style furniture and subtle nods to the house’s iconic codes. There’s even a private home cinema and during the Cannes Film Festival, it’s where celebrities come to get ready just hours before walking the red carpet, which only adds to the sense of occasion.

The schedule for the day was intentionally light, exactly what you want after a long trip. A sunbed had been booked for us at Ciro’s, the hotel’s private beach, and it set the tone perfectly. The name carries its own weight on this stretch of coast. Originally founded in Deauville in 1920, Ciro’s was built on a very particular idea of French coastal glamour. The Cannes version, which opened in 2025, feels like a natural evolution: same spirit, different backdrop. On the menu, you’ll find exactly what you want from a chic Riviera beach spot: fresh salads, seafood to share, a few indulgent signatures…

To wrap up the day, we had dinner at Fouquet’s, classic French brasserie authority, precisely executed. Worth knowing: it's set to become a Beefbar in early June, a concept I've loved in Fouquet's Saint-Barth, part of the Barrière Group, and Cyprus, and one that will bring a younger, more international energy to the address.

Wellness And Slow Moments

Day two started with one of my favourite moments: spa time. The Majestic Spa features Biologique Recherche, one of my go-to brands, and I was in expert hands with Eva for a 50-minute facial. We went for the VIP O2 range to boost radiance and revive the complexion. The treatment combined deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation and sculpting techniques designed to detoxify and lift the skin, with just the right amount of intensity to feel it.

The spa spans 450sq/m and also features a sea-facing fitness centre offering personalised training sessions, Pilates, circuit training and group classes. Speaking of

movement and well-being, we were also treated to a yoga session on the beach pontoon at Ciro’s. It was very soothing, with the sound of the waves in the background, the sun warm but not overpowering, and that feeling of being completely switched off from everything else. One of those simple yet perfect travel moments. My favourite dining experience, and easily the most intimate, was that evening’s dinner, set inside a transparent bubble tucked away in the hotel gardens, with views stretching over both the sea and La Croisette.

The setting alone felt slightly surreal. A round table dressed in crisp white linen, surrounded by curved chairs with bold red velvet cushions that also keep you warm as the evening cools, and delicate pastel flowers arranged in small glass vases.

The menu, designed by Executive Chef Jean-François Barbéris, with subtle nods to his grandmother’s recipes, followed a beautifully paced rhythm: amuse-bouche, vegetable ravioli, sea bass in a salt crust with a vibrant sauce vierge. A highlight in between: a lemon sorbet paired with a citrus blossom granité, inspired by enfleurage, a traditional perfumery technique reinterpreted here. And to finish, a perfectly executed Saint-Honoré, the house signature. Service also played a big part in the experience, thanks to Adrien, our dedicated butler, who handled everything with effortless precision.

Beyond La Croisette

For the final day, we had lunch at another spot that will definitely resonate with GCC travellers: Mademoiselle Gray, the private beach of Hôtel Le Gray d’Albion (also part of the Barrière group). The vibe here is a little different, more beach club, a bit more upbeat, and the menu follows suit, with strong Middle Eastern influences running through it. Think labneh topped with beets and pistachios, a fresh take on fattah, crispy coriander falafel or chicken skewers marinated in taouk spices. And then dessert, because skipping it would be a mistake, especially when it comes to the Brioche perdue inspired by Umm Ali, loaded with pistachio and citrus caramel.

The afternoon was all about fragrance. As a self-confessed perfume addict, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to wrap up the stay. Because just 25 minutes away lies Grasse, the world capital of perfume, not just in name but in heritage. It all started back in the 16th century, when scents were used to mask the smell of leather gloves. Today, it’s an entire industry rooted in tradition and craftsmanship.

We began in Cannes, at the Guerlain boutique just a short walk from the hotel, for an olfactory consultation, and it turned out to be far more personal than expected. It’s not just about choosing a fragrance, but understanding what draws you to certain notes, what you want to express, even the environments where you feel most like yourself. Surprisingly introspective.

Then we headed to Grasse for a workshop at Fragonard, a family-run house since 1926. We started with a guided visit of the factory, a behind-the-scenes look at raw ingredients, extraction and formulation, before moving on to the more hands-on part. The workshop itself is simple but revealing. You’re introduced to the olfactory pyramid (top, heart and base notes) and from there, you start blending, adjusting, testing. A tiny variation can completely shift a scent, making it fresher, warmer, softer or more intense.

On the way back, we stopped in Mougins, just 15 minutes from Cannes, but it might as well be another world. The village rises in a slow spiral around its bell tower, a maze of cobbled lanes, honey-coloured stone houses and sudden openings onto wide, hazy views of the Provençal hills. Mougins began drawing artists in the 1920s, but it was Pablo Picasso’s arrival in 1961 that gave the village its myth. He settled into Notre-Dame-de-Vie, just outside the centre, with his wife Jacqueline Roque. In that quiet retreat, he worked relentlessly, painting, sculpting, experimenting, until his death in 1973. Today, Mougins still carries that artistic energy with more than 30 galleries and studios. A different Riviera, basically. Same light, no spotlight. And that contrast is exactly what makes it work: the energy on one side, the calm just a few minutes away, all part of the same place. ✤ GO:

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Getting away from the tourists takes a bit more effort lately. It seems every ‘hidden gem’ is quickly tagged, captioned and overrun within a season. Yet some places still fly entirely under the radar – the ones you hear about from an adventurous friend or a back-packing cousin returning from a gap year.

This month’s travel mood is about going slightly off-route, stepping away from the usual spots and choosing less obvious destinations. So, get exploring before the cat’s out of the bag!

FAROE ISLANDS

Floating somewhere between Iceland and Norway, the Faroe Islands (a territory of Denmark) look like something out of a fantasy world. Its 18 volcanic islands rise sharply out of the North Atlantic – steep basalt cliffs and rolling green hills stitched together by undersea tunnels, ferries and winding roads that seem to disappear into the mist. The weather here dictates absolutely everything – one moment it’s pouring, the next it’s clear sunshine with views for miles. It sounds inconvenient and plans may need to change without warning, but it gives the place its charm, so go with the flow.

Tórshavn, one of the smallest capitals in the world with around 14,000 residents, is easy to get a feel for in under an hour. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to cosy cottages and boutique hotels overlooking the sea. Wander the old quarter of Tinganes, its colourful wooden buildings with grass roofs jutting into the harbour, then stop to sample traditional Faroese fermented lamb (skerpikjøt) and aged fish.

The real draw, though, is the fairytale landscape, with its wide-open, end-of-the-world feel. Hike the bird cliffs at Vestmanna, visit the iconic Múlafossur Waterfall and the famous 'lake above the ocean' at Sørvágsvatn or take a boat to witness one of the biggest bird colonies on Mykines, where puffins outnumber people by a considerable margin. There’s not much in the way of attractions and getting here takes a little effort (a connection through Copenhagen or Reykjavik, usually), but to witness one of the most breathtaking edges of the world, it’s worth it for those willing to make the journey.

ALBANIA

The Balkans' overlooked corner, Albania is one of the most stunning yet underrated destinations in Southeast Europe. The coastline rivals parts of Greece or Croatia and its mountains are a trekker’s dream – yet outside a few summer hotspots, it hasn’t been fully claimed by mass tourism yet. Tirana, the capital, is the obvious starting point. Busy, quirky and full of colour in unexpected places, you'll find street art murals brightening communist-era buildings, Cold War relics like the refurbished Bunk'Art museums and formerly off-limits zones like Blloku now buzzing with trendy cafés, restaurants and galleries.

To the north, the Accursed Mountains (or Albanian Alps) are considered one of Europe's last unspoilt wildernesses. The traverse between Valbona and Theth – a full day's hike through rugged valleys, remote villages and pine forests –has become the stuff of serious trekkers' bucket lists. In the southwest, the stunning Albanian Riviera stretches along the Ionian Sea, with Dhërmi, Himarë and Ksamil offering clear, turquoise water and postcard-worthy beaches without the typical Mediterranean crowds.

Further inland, Albania’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical cities are both worth the detour – Berat with its hillside maze of white Ottoman houses, and Gjirokastër’s limestone streets and brooding 12th-century fortress. Don't leave without exploring the Old Bazaar’s traditional artisan shops, carpets and local eateries. The food is influenced by Italy and Greece, so expect grilled meat, fresh vegetables, plenty of olive oil and outstanding gelato!

It's rare to find a country that delivers this much and still feels like a hidden gem. Visit before everyone else catches on.

KAZAKHSTAN

Kazakhstan rarely shows up on travel lists, which is surprising once you see it. The ninth largest country on earth is vast with landscapes that shift dramatically from steppe to canyon to mountain.

In the north, the ultramodern capital Astana dazzles with its futuristic architecture contrasting with the barren plains, but the soul of the country lies further south in Almaty – City of Apples. The country's cultural hub, it's a cosmopolitan city with leafy avenues, a vibrant art scene and a backdrop of Tian Shan's snow-capped peaks that never leave your line of sight. Coffee culture is big here, with excellent cafés pouring flat whites on almost every corner. The streets around the all-wood Ascension Cathedral offer excellent people-watching, and the Green Bazaar is a sensory experience of dried fruit, kumis (fermented mare's milk) and kazy (smoked horse meat sausage).

For a taste of the stunning landscape, take a cable car from the city centre to Kok Tobe Hill for its panoramic views and the Big Almaty Lake – a high-altitude alpine reservoir so picture-perfect it looks like a desktop wallpaper come to life. With so much to see, don’t miss the Charyn Canyon's rust red rock formations (often seen as a smaller Grand Canyon) and the breathtaking views at Kolsai Lakes National

Park – impossibly still water reflecting the surrounding forests. Further west, the Mangystau region's surreal white limestone cliffs and dry seabeds feel otherworldly.

Driving across the steppe is almost hypnotic, with little to interrupt the horizon except the occasional herd of horses or a traditional yurt camp – where you can stay for a glimpse into nomadic life, enjoying simple meals of beshbarmak (boiled meat over noodles) and plenty of tea.

Kazakhstan isn’t designed for quick visits. You have to cover some ground to understand it, so take your time – it’ll be worth the while.

SUMBA, INDONESIA

Indonesia has no shortage of islands, but where Bali gets all the attention for its high-end resorts and party scene, Sumba stands out for what it doesn’t have. No crowds, no beach clubs, just untouched, raw beauty.

The landscape has a dramatic untamed quality: sweeping savannahs, rolling hills, breathtaking waterfalls and deserted white–sand beaches facing the wild Indian Ocean. Surfing has started to bring more attention to Sumba, especially along the western coast around spots like Nihiwatu, but it’s still relatively low-key. You can spend hours moving from one beach to another and pass only a handful of people.

Weekuri Lagoon is worth a visit – a calm saltwater pool separated from the sea by coral rocks that shifts between shades of blue and green as the light changes. Not far from there you'll find Mandorak Beach, a pretty little cove with clear turquoise water hidden between striking cliffs. Then there’s Walakiri Beach, known for its mangrove trees that create unusual shapes against the sunset – definitely one for the Insta reels!

Sumba is closely tied to its traditions and villages still follow customs that go back generations. The Uma Mbatangu houses are built with tall, pointed thatch and bamboo roofs, and megalithic stone tombs sit in the centre of communities. Getting around takes a bit of patience. Roads are narrow and winding and most travellers hire a driver and local guide. Accommodation ranges from bare-bones guesthouses to a few higher-end eco lodges, though even those keep things understated.

Sumba isn't trying to compete with anywhere else – it’s honest, unspoilt and totally magical! ✤

TUNED IN

Againstcelebrities has been in the game long enough to know that a career is never just about the music. But after a year that pushed him back to basics, that's exactly where he landed: closer to his sound, clearer on his direction and making some of the most considered work of his life. We sat down with him to find out more.

At the start of this year, you shared that 2025 had been a particularly intense and challenging chapter for you, saying you ‘lost everything’ and had to start from scratch. What happened during that period and how did it change the way you approach your music and your career?

Let’s just say my life felt like a rollercoaster. I went through some tough phases where I lost balance, like anyone does at some point. But in a way, it grounded me. It pushed me closer to my music and gave me a renewed sense of purpose. I found myself more dedicated than ever, especially in production, spending more time creating and refining my sound. That period reshaped my focus and made me more intentional about my career.

If we were to see you on stage today, what would feel different compared to a year ago?

There’s a stronger sense of control and confidence in everything I do. I’m more connected to my sound, more in tune with the crowd and more deliberate in how I build my sets. It’s not just about playing music anymore, it’s about creating an experience. You’d feel a more refined energy, with every moment on stage having purpose.

You’ve always been very instinctive in the way you approach music. Did your process become more structured over time, or do you still work the same way?

Over time, my approach has definitely become more structured and organised. I’ve learned the importance of discipline in the creative process. That being said, I still rely heavily on my instincts, intuition plays a huge role in how I create and produce music. It’s really about finding the balance between structure and feeling.

What's one track you’re playing a lot at the moment, something that really represents where your head is at right now?

Lately, I’ve been playing my remix of Sun & Moon, which is a collaboration with one of the biggest DJs in Lebanon right now. It really reflects where I am at the moment.

With everything happening in the region, do you feel any shift in the energy of the crowd or the scene when you play?

To be honest, when nightlife started picking up again after the conflicts, I expected things to feel quieter or more reserved. But it’s actually been the opposite, it’s been better than I imagined. People are coming out, connecting and really embracing the moment. At the end of the day, life comes with ups and downs, but the energy of people wanting to enjoy and live in the moment is always there.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you when you’re not behind the decks?

A lot of people are surprised to learn that I’m actually a reader. It might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but reading is how I disconnect and reset, it really helps calm my mind. I also challenge myself to learn at least 15 new facts every day. It keeps me curious and constantly evolving.

What can we expect from you this year? Are you working on new releases and collaborations?

This year, I set a personal goal to release 10 tracks, and I’m fully committed to making that happen. There are also some exciting collaborations in the works with some of the biggest artists in the region, which I’m really looking forward to sharing.

Have you got any gigs lined up? Where can people catch you? You can catch me at some of the top clubs in Doha throughout the year. I don’t follow a fixed schedule, but I always share my monthly lineup in advance on my social media, so that’s the best place to stay updated. ✤

Police in Irvine, California, shared the story in a pun-filled Facebook post announcing an arrest with the words: “If your master plan involves swapping Legos for linguine, we can promise your plan will be cooked al dente.”

Following an investigation that began last December, retailer Target told police there were at least 70 thefts across the US potentially tied to the suspect, totalling a whopping USD34,000!

This leaves us with questions. Firstly, how come nobody noticed at handover? Secondly, we’re told Jarrelle is from California, but surely they mean Florida? And, thirdly, is there any connection to the guys knocking out the hilarious online Lego videos?

Happy Hippos

We’ve all heard the stories of drugs kingpin Pablo Escobar’s hippos, right? For those who’re not in the know, the creatures, nicknamed ‘cocaine hippos’ (due to their owner’s profession, rather than their own proclivities) are an invasive population of between 150 and 200 hippopotamuses in Colombia, descendants of four animals imported for Escobar’s private zoo in the 1980s.

After his death, they apparently thrived in the Magdalena River with their numbers multiplying until they

were destroying local ecosystems and threatening public safety. After failed attempts at sterilisation and contraception, alarmed Colombian authorities planned a cull to prevent further population growth and it seemed the hippos’ days were numbered. But now, in happy news for the hippos, Anant Ambani, the son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has offered to relocate 80 of the creatures to a sanctuary where they’ll live out their days peacefully. Hippo, hippo, hurray.

(Not So) Snap Happy

There are plenty of tales of people hurting, and even killing, themselves while taking selfies but a recent report out of South Korea takes the biscuit. Following a long investigation, authorities have revealed that two F-15 fighter jets were involved in a mid-air collision because the pilots were taking photos and videos! The incident took place when the jets were on a non-combat mission and the pilot of the second jet began to shoot photos to commemorate his last flight. Seeing what was going on, the pilot of the lead aircraft told a fellow pilot to film a commemorative

video and the second plane flipped on its back to offer a better angle.

As a result, the two jets ended up dangerously close together and, in taking evasive action, managed to collide, causing almost USD600,000 of damage. The tale is wild enough to start with but, consider this, it seems the practice was quite common and has only come to light because one of the pilots challenged a fine imposed over the damage! He’s apparently left the air force and is now flying commercially. Not sure we’d want to be his passenger!
