this year. Take a walk by the beach, practice yoga, or exercise your mind. By now I’m pretty sure you’ve guessed where I’m leading you with our cover story. This month, it’s all about being one with one’s self and one’s surroundings through colour therapy (p20). This is more than just your average adult colouring book, it’s an in-depth chronicle on how colours affect your life through your Chakras. Trust me, you’ll be looking at the colours in your life in a whole new way. March is also one for the ladies, with both International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day gracing the calendars. We first take a look at an inspiring female, who is dominating the glamour industry with her passion for creativity and beauty (p30), and then do a quick shopping spree for that perfect Mother’s Day present (p32). It’s never too much when it comes to celebrating the women in our lives, So make sure to also take a bite out of our dining listings for special ladies’ treats throughout the city (p86), and some much-needed pampering with spa escapes (p94). Speaking of celebrations, we also celebrate Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery’s second anniversary with some storytelling insights from the general manager, and stunning views of this boutique hotel (p33). I told you we had quite a bit happening this month. So, be sure to take a moment for yourself, as you flip through our pages in solitude.

SMASHING RECORDS MG Motor has been rising from the ashes and recently broke its sales records in 2020 to enter the GCC top 10 car manufacturers. Doha is known for its extensive roads and extravagant cars, a phenomenon that’s quite popular in many parts of the region. That said, the region also holds quite the competitive market, a market that MG Motor smashed with its sales as it broke into the GCC’s top 10 of car manufacturers for the first time in 2020. 2020 might not be popular in our books, but this is the year that the British-born brand’s sales increased by a remarkable 72 per cent across the region. With total sales of 27,595 units, the company’s achievements were all the more impressive considering the challenging market conditions caused by the global pandemic. This success has been driven by the brand’s line-up of sedan and SUV models and in particular its top two sellers, the MG5 compact sedan and MG ZS compact SUV. The pandemic has put most of us in a mood slump, and the second round of quarantine is something none of us are looking forward to. But instead of sitting between four white walls staring at a screen, add some colour and meditation to your life with chromotherapy. Here, we look at the effects of colour therapy and how it affects your physical and mental states through your Chakras.

W

hy live in black and white when you can live in colour? It’s quite the norm to associate colours with emotions; when we’re sad we feel blue, when we’re happy we see yellow and we even feel green with envy. Our entire lives are surrounded by colours and the meanings that they carry, so it’s not too surprising when we learn that colour can also be used to influence our moods through colour therapy, also known as chromotherapy. Colours are all around us and stand as an integral part of the world while having a profound influence on us in every phase of our lives. We don’t know about you, but we’ve felt this effect most during quarantine when we craved the hues of mother nature and opened our windows for some vast blue and lush green ambience. We might have even bought an indoor plant or two to lift our spirits. Let’s also not forget the amount of time new homeowners or renovators spend on selecting paint for their living rooms and the umpteen shows on television focusing on which room should be painted what kind of colour depending on its use. So, if one plant or wall colour can bring such a change in our moods and behaviours, then imagine what an array of carefully selected colours can do when applied with mindful techniques. “Colour has immense affects in the most profound ways, especially on our emotions, moods, what we communicate to our subconscious mind and what we communicate to others about

us and how we feel,” says Walaa from Walaa’s colorways, an author, qualified interior designer and colour therapist. She holds space for spiritual practices and women’s circles, both online and in-person, to help detach from black and white thinking and glow from within. Colour therapy is the use of colour in a variety of ways to promote health and healing, a technique that has been used for centuries. So, before we go into how to apply colour therapy into your own lives, let’s look at where it comes from. This form of healing has been around since the ancient Egyptians, where patients were treated in rooms specifically designed to break up the sun’s rays into the colours of the spectrum. Such rooms were known to balance the body’s energy centres, also known as Chakras, as sunlight shone on them through coloured gems. Each colour of the spectrum affected a specific Chakra to heal. In India, specialists of Ayurveda explained that specific colours linked with each of the seven Chakras; energy centres that represent organs, emotions, and aspects of the spirit. Now Ayurveda, being one of the oldest health-care systems in the world, still uses colour to treat a wide range of cerebral and physical imbalances today. All these techniques have now been modernised to create patterns of harmony in one’s mind, whilst still keeping the nature of the practice intact. “Colour therapy is the use of colour psychology, colour energies to help us reach wellbeing and get us to understand ourselves better because colour is a language of the subconscious mind,” 22

MAIN FEATURE •

adds Walaa. Basically, when you’re attracted to colour, this is your subconscious mind talking to you, telling you what you need. And colour therapy aids you in understanding those relationships. This process allows you power over your behaviour and moods, helping you to find and reap change. Used to treat both physical and emotional troubles, colour therapy may comprise of exposure to coloured lights, massages using colour-saturated oils, visualising colours, even wearing coloured clothing and consuming coloured diets. If we get a little scientific, then we could say that the human body absorbs light that is made up of the colour spectrum, the seven colours of the rainbow to be exact. Each colour in the spectrum has a frequency, wavelength, and energy associated with it. And these colours have an affect on our specific Chakras when absorbed through the nervous system and endocrine system, and consequently on hormone release. Thus, affecting our mental, emotional, psychological, and physical states of health. Colour therapy can be combined with a range of other treatments and disciplines such as sound therapy, yoga, meditation, and art therapy, as Walaa mentions. “Colour therapy can be combined with many different modalities because every colour is connected to a certain vibration that also connects to the number vibrations, to the sound vibrations and to different body parts as well.” Colour therapy is often used with reflexology, with massages using colour visualisation, and even colour acupuncture. It’s important to note that if the addition of these colours can add balance to our life, then their absence can also create an imbalance. This is why factors such as our environment and

lifestyle need to have just the right amount of colour. Too much or too little can cause unease. For example, the colour blue can have a comforting effect which can then result in lower blood pressure, whereas the colour red might have the opposite effect. Yellow, on the other hand, may be used to help revitalise people who might be suffering from depression. The shades of colours used in your colour therapy session will vary depending upon the type of ailment you are trying to correct. The most popular being the connection of colours to our Chakras. Your favourite colour can also say much about your emotional state, along with the colour you are attracted to and wear daily. Walaa says that a favourite colour is depictive of a person’s current needs, challenges and how their body and mind can work to overcome such obstacles in the best way for them. fact magazine

T

he word Chakra translates to the word ‘wheel’ in Sanskrit, a simple manifestation of seven distinct energy points that start at the top

of your head and end at the bottom of your spine. If you’ve ever attended a yoga class or group meditation, your instructor or practitioner most likely spoke about your Chakras. These centres regulate all

Physical Location: The base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae Colour: Red Element: Earth Crystal: Hematite The Root Chakra is the base of our being, as it sits on the base of the spine. It’s our connection to nature and is characterised by a sense of security, stability, and self-reliance. When this Chakra is out of balance a person might feel no control over their life, a lack of purpose, and instability. However, when it is aligned you exude confidence, energy, independence, and strength. Be careful of having an overactive Chakra as it may cause an overindulgence in food, intimacy, attachment to money, and an obsession with feeling secure.

parts of your body and affect everything from emotional processing to resistance to disease. “A Chakra is an energy centre in the body that governs [connects] different emotions, different body parts and different energetic elements,” says Walaa from Walaa’s colorways. She explains that the body has hundreds of these, but there are seven main ones along the spine that practitioners focus on. She adds that every Chakra connects to a certain vibration and wavelength of emotions and thoughts, so each Chakra is connected to colour on the same wavelength. Typically, most meditation techniques focus on keeping these Chakras open and aligned. Blocked Chakras can negatively impact your physical and psychological health, as energy can no longer run freely through your body. These focal points have been the subject of meditations and breathing techniques for centuries, all of which aim towards healthy minds and bodies. Each of these seven main Chakras has a corresponding name, colour, and specific area on the body.

“Being attracted to red can also be an indication that a person is looking for vitality and energy and must achieve that by being grounded and finding balance from activities and getting in touch with the Earth. Red is also a great colour to let go of old pain.” – Walaa, Walaa’s colorways fact magazine

The Sacral Chakra — Svadhishthana Physical Location: Lower abdomen, about four fingers below the navel Colour: Orange Element: Water Crystal: Tiger’s Eye This Chakra is responsible for our creative expression and intimate passion. This is the most fun of the seven. It’s also linked to how we relate to our emotions as well as the emotions of others. When this Chakra is aligned, we feel like we’re on top of the world. You’ll be sociable, zealous, outgoing, and content with life, while oozing smiles all day. This also gives us courage for change in most aspects of our life. It’s a high on creativity, so be sure to keep those juices flowing to keep the wheels of the Chakras turning. When they’re not, it can lead us to feel uninspired creatively, and be down in the dumps emotionally, with no vision for the future.

“Being attracted to orange is also an indication that you might be going through some sort of loss, could be a breakup. Orange is a colour that asks you to get in touch with your emotions and release what no longer serves your joy.” — Walaa, Walaa’s colorways 26

fact magazine

The Solar Plexus Chakra — Manipura Physical Location: Upper abdomen in the stomach area Colour: Yellow Element: Fire Crystal: Amber The third Chakra Manipura, meaning ‘lustrous gem’, is said to be responsible for our source of personal power, and our ruling over our confidence, and happiness. It’s also illustrated by energy and emotions like ego, fury, and anger. It makes us believe in ourselves and our ability to do whatever we put our minds to. If there’s a blockage here, then it may aid in shattering your confidence. It can range from a small insecurity to larger sweeping self-esteem problems, depending on how big the block is. Your thoughts might be haunted by not being good enough, pretty enough, or strong enough while comparing yourself to unattainable standards. Such discomfort can also affect the stomach with nerves and discomfort.

“Yellow could also be a sign that you are spending too much time in your head and that you need to use meditation or some other calming practices to learn to calm your thoughts.” — Walaa, Walaa’s colorways

MAIN FEATURE •

The Heart Chakra — Anahata Physical Location: Centre of the chest, just above the heart Colour: Green Element: Air Crystal: Rose Quartz It’s no surprise that this Chakra deals with elements of love and balance. By harmonising this Chakra you’ll spread love, friendliness, and care in all aspects of your life. All the words that make our hearts glow, a feeling we all know well. Located at the heart centre, this Chakra also lies in the middle of all seven and unites the lower Chakras of matter and the upper Chakras of spirit. It’s the bridge between the mind, body, and emotions, uniting them all to work together in harmony. When closed off, it often erupts in feelings of anger, annoyance, jealousy, or hatred towards yourself and others. And a little too much of it might make you too co-dependent — a lack of boundaries in a relationship.

“Being attracted to green could mean that it’s time to let go of grudges, grief or anything that you are holding on to that’s holding you back from reaching your goals and growing in your life. Green also asks us to open up to the world and lead through our hearts.” — Walaa, Walaa’s colorways

The Throat Chakra — Vishuddha Physical Location: In the middle of the throat Colour: Blue Element: Ether (Space) You might have guessed it, as the location of the Chakra conveys it all. The focus is on conveying words and having strong communication and knowledge. This is a person’s source of verbal expression and the capability to declare the utmost truth in the clearest way possible. When balanced you will have no problem in saying what you feel, so shout from the rooftops or whisper in the alley; people will hear you loud and clear. You’ll also be able to listen and understand, you’re not only heard but you hear. However, someone with a blocked throat chakra will feel like they have trouble finding the words to say about how they truly feel while finding it hard to pay attention and stay focused. Physically, this blockage can manifest itself as a sore throat, thyroid issues, neck and shoulder stiffness, or tension headaches.

“This colour always asks us to show our true colours, be authentic and speak from who we truly are. Being attracted to sky blue is often a calling for you to be visible as who you are.” — Walaa, Walaa’s colorways fact magazine

The Third Eye Chakra — Ajna

The Crown Chakra — Sahasrara

Physical Location: On the forehead in the centre of your brow Colour: Indigo Element: Light Crystal: Amethyst

Physical Location: The very top of the head Colour: Violet Element: Thought Crystal: Clear quartz

The Third Eye Chakra is a powerful energy source when working at its peak. It is often used as a focal point during yoga practices to bring more concentration and awareness and is often associated with intuition; the gut feeling you get. We all have a sense of intuition, but we hardly heed its warnings. A focus on opening the sixth Chakra will help you hone this ability and trust your instincts with ease — strengthening your sixth sense. Think of it as the eye of the soul, serving as a bridge between you and the outside world, allowing you to see beyond illusions. When this Chakra is out of balance, one might have trouble trusting their inner voice, be afraid of success, or, on the contrary, be egotistical.

The Sahastrara Chakra or the ‘thousand petal lotus’ is the centre of spirituality, enlightenment, and energy. It makes way for the inward flow of wisdom and brings the gift of cosmic consciousness. It symbolises our spiritual connection to our higher selves, others, and the universe. This Chakra is linked to every other (and therefore every organ in this system), affecting not just all those organs, but also our brain and nervous system. When all is well, you will be in tune with the beauty of the world around you, experiencing a feeling of profound happiness. Unfortunately, a traumatic life experience can move the Crown Chakra out of positive. When out of balance, one might suffer from a constant sense of frustration, no spark of joy, and negative feelings.

“Being attracted to indigo could mean that you are spending too much time being wrapped up in the drama of others and not listening to your own intuition. It is a calling to sit in silence and connect with yourself. Listen to you and to the universal energy inside of you.” — Walaa, Walaa’s colorways 28

• WOMAN IN FOCUS

30

Ladies First It’s only fitting that we focus on someone who focuses on the beauty of other women this month for International Women’s Day — enter Lucky Allure. A career woman, a mother, a beautician, an artist and writer; an inspiration for women everywhere. fact magazine

WOMAN IN FOCUS •

ucky Allure has had a rollercoaster of careers, from gracing the skies as a flight attendant, instilling confidence as a drama teacher to writing inspiring words and now to making women even more beautiful than they already are. It takes real confidence in one’s ability and passion to leave a stable career behind to pursue your dreams, but that didn’t deter Lucky. After giving birth to her daughter, she realised she wanted to set an inspiring example and a took a leap of faith, as we learnt in conversation with this beauty guru. What’s your relationship with makeup? I had always loved makeup all my life. I used to do makeup on my friends and my sister, whenever I got the opportunity. Working as an air hostess for Sri Lankan Airlines gave me better training and an understanding about makeup and grooming. Was your initial training enough to support your talent? Honestly, I thought that this would come to me naturally. I thought I knew everything regarding makeup and the industry, but I was wrong. I put a lot of time and effort into learning what I know today. I joined Tajmeel, and everything I am today is due to their support and guidance. I followed the ITEC diploma to be a Beauty Specialist. This included everything from makeup, nails, skin care, facials, and waxing to salon management, health and safety etc. They gave me a proper insight into the beauty industry, which I use in my current operations. Making a name for yourself must’ve been hard in such a competitive field, how did you stand out from the rest? I started doing collaborations while I was still studying at Tajmeel, so by the time I graduated I already had a list of contacts and a portfolio. Apart from collaborations I also stepped out of my comfort zone and began to take charge. I started organising my own shoots; selected models, arranged locations, and collaborated with other aspiring talents in the industry. I mainly focused on newbies because I know how difficult it is to create a name for yourself, and this way we all helped each other grow. Did you face any struggles in your journey? Unfortunately, I did. I was still a new mother and was trying to juggle that with my career, by taking my daughter to sets, leaving to pick and drop her off from school, but always managing to make it in time for her bedtime. What are some big projects that you have done? The more my work got published, the more projects I was offered. I started working with Trinity Talent Qatar at the beginning. Now, I mostly work with The Film House and support on AL Jazeera tapings. They all feel like family to me. I’ve also had the privilege of working with international stars such as Tom Felton, Sonam Kapoor, and Xavi amongst others. What is your favourite type of make-up? I specialise in Au Naturale makeup and this is my favourite type. I also do many other forms, ranging from Hollywood Glam, Arabic, Film makeup and Creative makeup.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love creating funny video content with my daughter. We both bond a lot while doing this and while doing makeup. Yes, she maybe just five but she’s already a makeup enthusiast. What’s next for you? Well, I can’t give everything away, but I will be a presenter and a main part of an upcoming initiative for a TV show that is in production. This show is all about the fashion industry in Qatar and will be telecasted on a local TV station as well as internationally. The name’s a secret so you’ll have to wait to find out more. How would you describe yourself in three words? Driven, patient and optimistic. What’s the best thing about your job? Getting to meet so many amazing people and visiting amazing places for shoots. I get to do what I love the most so that, at the end of the day, it doesn’t even feel like work. It’s like I’m being paid to enjoy my favourite hobby. I feel like a boss babe TBH. What is a message you’d like to send to women everywhere? You will fail multiple times in this journey of life, but there’s nothing better than pulling your socks up and telling yourself, “you can do this”. All you have to do is trust yourself and your abilities and don’t take no for an answer. ✤ fact magazine

THE STORYTELLER Hani Akkari brings new meaning to experiential hospitality at Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery, with his storytelling and culturally immersive approach. fact magazine

• ALWADI 2ND ANNIVERSARY neighbouring competitors. Hani believes in creating a unique storyline when managing the first five-star MGallery luxury boutique hotel in Qatar, located in Msheireb Downtown Doha. “We shy away from standardised text and descriptions of our amenities. Instead, we use beautiful, audacious yet elegant images and video to translate a day in the life of our hotel, the kind of stories that people can relate to,” says Hani. “By being factual to our brand and telling our story honestly and delightfully, we create marketing content with stories that are fundamentally engaging to people.” Each boutique hotel in the MGallery collection tells a unique story, inviting guests to immerse themselves in tales of adventure, romance, history, culture, nature, and more for the length of a memorable stay. Msheireb is deeply rooted in Doha’s rich history and is historically known as the place where rainwater would run down from the ‘wadi’ or valley — this being the narrative from which the hotel gets its name. This area was a place for people to collect their precious supplies, to trade, and socialise. Today, it remains an important meeting place as Doha’s modern social and civic hub. Alwadi relies on the same narrative, bringing people together to converse while sitting amid a history of culture. “Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery is the place to meet, watch, learn, and where Memorable Moments are yet to be discovered,” adds Hani. As he emphasises that Memorable Moments arise as guests immerse themselves in the essence of Qatari Hospitality and discover a cultured blend of Qatari heritage and contemporary design.

A

story is only as good as its narrator and Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery’s general manager, Hani Akkari showcases storytelling with a novel approach, encompassing history, culture, and tradition. Hani has become a celebrity in the hospitality sector during his first year as general manager. Not only is he currently the youngest general manager of a hotel in the entire GCC, with fine taste in suits if we may add, but he has also immensely transformed and perfectly translated the storyline of his hotel to the residents of Doha in a short space of time. The hotel is known as a cultural hub, tying in the past with the present through cuisine, architecture, interiors, and views of the city. ALWADI 2ND ANNIVERSARY •

Every aspect of the hotel relates to a story, culture, or theme. It’s a schematic array of wonders in architecture and interior design. Sitting adjacent to the hotel is the iconic Souq Waqif, a centuries-old market. These surroundings serve as tales of past and present, with the current day Souq Waqif sitting right outside windows that are themselves surrounded by images of the area’s history. It’s as if you’ve opened a portal between the past and present. “Through unique architecture, stunning design, and an immersion in the local scene, our hotel stands out and attracts the world to our doorstep. Each space inside our hotel has been carefully considered to create a welcoming atmosphere that is consistent with its style,” says Hani of the unique story behind the establishment. What’s important to note is that not everyone can convey these stories, you need people who are as deeply fascinated by and passionate about the stories you want to tell. This brings us to the people who ensure that guests have an unforgettable experience. The hotel doesn’t employ staff, rather it employs Dream Makers and Heartists, creating passionate hoteliers that come together to make their guests’ dream of a perfect hotel experience come to life. “Being a Heartist is about serving others from the heart. It’s about placing people at the heart of everything we do,” says Hani. “We hire for attitude, train for skills, and help people become Dream Makers and Heartists,” he reveals. Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery shares stories with authenticity and staying true to its brand values. Storytelling for the team members is an art, just like many other things in life. ✤ fact magazine

T

he Audi Group is one of the most successful premium motorcar manufacturers on the planet with a presence in over 100 markets worldwide. In 2019 alone, it delivered around 1.846 million vehicles to customers and is continuously receiving awards for automobile excellence. We at Fact Magazine have always loved all things Audi and were recently given the opportunity to test drive the Audi Q7, a mid-sized luxury SUV that was hugely impressive, to say the least. This month, thanks to the great team at Audi Centre Qatar, we were fortunate enough to be handed the keys to the new Audi RS Q3, designed as a sportback for the very first time and, needless to say, we could not have been more excited. As the 2021 RS Q3 came into view, we felt like we were staring at a vehicle out of The Fast and The Furious franchise. With a bright Kyalami Green paint job, gloss-black detailing and sharp, sporty lines running from front to rear, this car looks like it means business long before it ever touches tyre to tarmac. At the front end of this high-performance, compact SUV coupé, a gloss black Singleframe grille, complete with three-dimensional honeycomb structure, sits above an RS-specific bumper with large lateral air inlets. At the flanks, it is easy to see the RS’s lowered position as compared to the Q3 Sportback. 20-inch wheels are fitted as standard and the vehicle’s low-slung roofline culminates in strong, sloping D-pillars at the rear. The backend features a low rear window and roof edge spoiler in gloss black with an RSspecific spoiler lip. A dual-branch RS exhaust system with large oval tailpipes on both sides are positioned perfectly in an RSspecific bumper sporting a rear diffuser and horizontal blades. As we slipped inside the spacious interior, we were greeted by the comfortable RS embossed sport seats upholstered with black leather. This performance-orientated car boasts an RS sport steering wheel that is flattened at the bottom, along with newly designed shift paddles. A new ‘RS Mode’ steering wheel button is present on the wheel and allows the driver to control two optional RS modes in the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. The entire cockpit has been designed with the driver in mind with the centre console, MMI touch display and air-conditioning control unit having been tilted toward the driver by 10 degrees. The top-of-the-line MMI navigation plus infotainment system offers the same variety of functions as in the large Audi models. This fully-fledged five-seater offers a surprising amount of space throughout with sufficient head, knee and shoulder room for all occupants. The luggage compartment can hold 530 litres, a total that can be increased to 1400 litres when the rear seats are folded down, making this vehicle practical for everyday use. Thoroughly impressed by the exterior and interior of the new RS Q3, we could not wait to get this model out onto the road. Fitted with the even more powerful, multi-award-winning, five cylinder 2.5 TFSI, we felt our bodies being pressed back into our seats as we applied pressure to the pedal. This beast of an engine produces 2.480cc of displacement with 294kW of power. It produces a maximum torque of 480Nm and can surge from zero to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The RS Q3 Sportback has a regulated top speed of 250km/h but if that’s not enough, you can decide on the 280km/h option instead. The dual-branch 44

RS exhaust system emphasises the sound of the potent engine and we saw many heads turn as we made our way along the roads. The power of this engine is transmitted via a sevenspeed S tronic to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the control on offer is spectacular. With a dynamic handling system, progressive steering, a responsive braking system and sport suspension, we could not have had more fun driving this vehicle if we had tried. The master designers at Audi have also included an array of safety features throughout the vehicle to ensure that you and you loved ones always get from A to B as safely as possible. ✤

OSS revealed an uplifting, colourful and relaxed Spring 21 collection with an outdoor show at the Palazzo del Senato in Milan. The space holds particular significance for the brand, as the firstever BOSS Womenswear show was held there 20 years ago. This return, two decades on, was an opportunity to celebrate the enduring confidence, elegance, and strength of the BOSS woman, as she moves together with the BOSS man into a whole new era. The Spring 21 collection captures the current mood within fashion of creativity and renewal, with a focus on craft, colour, and artistry. The work of London-based artist William Farr, which unites flowers with found objects and inspires embroidered and printed pieces, while floral motifs and metal eyelet details are seen throughout the collection. The show embodied a decisive move towards a more casual look, revealing a sportier, younger vision of the BOSS man and woman. Men’s hoodies, sneakers, drawstring pants, and bomber jackets all made an appearance on the runway. Looks for her featured ruching, eyelets, and utilitarian details. The BOSS dedication to craft is evident, with many materials sourced in southern Germany, while embroidery and laser-cutting draw the eye to the detail of the pieces. Simple shorts, wide-leg pants, and super-soft knits lend the collection a more easygoing feel than ever before. And a refreshing palette of blues, vivid emerald and soft rose enhances this new attitude, along with shades of sand, cream, and forest green. The collection is almost unisex in nature in that the menswear embraces the same florals and pastels as featured in the women’s offering. And loose flowing lines give a nod to the current working-from-home culture that has seen us all seeking casual-smart attire that both looks and feels great.✤

Why Is It Worth Watching?

As her final year of high school comes to an end, LJ is happier than ever in her relationship with Peter and looking forward to them heading to Stanford University together. But a spanner is thrown in works when Peter gets in on a lacrosse scholarship and LJ’s application is rejected. So unfolds a summer of uncertainty and indecision coupled with a trip to Korea and a romantic visit to New York followed by a cathartic beach trip where LJ and Peter consider breaking up. I May Destroy You Need to Know:

“

An exploration of relationships, consent and rebuilding life after harmful and potentially soul-destroying experiences.

The story of a woman trying to recall a night when she was drugged and raped. There was much consternation when this was missed out for a Golden Globe nomination.

Director: Sam Miller, Michaela Coel Cast: Michaela Coel, Weruche Opia, Paapa

Essiedu

Why Is It Worth Watching?

It’s hard to imagine such gritty subject matter being described as a comedy-drama but writer Michaela Coel’s black humour and spot-on sense of timing render this searing tale of selfdiscovery both enlightening and, at times, hugely entertaining. Arabella (Coel), a Twitter star and writer, takes a break from penning her second novel for a night out in London. Her drink is spiked and she wakes up knowing something is wrong. Friends help her piece together the night before. Not surprisingly, those same friends have traumas of their own and together they work through them until the explosive finale, which sees Arabella confronting her assailant in a set of thought-provoking scenarios – a kind of ‘what would you do?’ An exploration of relationships, consent and rebuilding life after harmful and potentially souldestroying experiences. Inspired by true-life and warmed by Coel’s inimitable talent.

• NEW IN TOWN

T

he city of Doha has been buzzing ever since Reberu graced the district of Msheireb and our palates with its tantalising, unique menu and aromatic flavours. It’s rare to find something new in Doha in terms of food, mostly because we have everything — well now we do. This modern and iconic take on fine dining leaves guests with an enduring impression set amidst an evolving cinematic schema that beautifully synchronises the art and science of fashionable gastronomy. And Reberu, far from being a franchise, takes pride in being unique in location, décor, and food; a local gem from all angles. Set under contemporary hanging light that bounces off textured walls, this restaurant brings us a menu encompassing Japanese, Peruvian and European contemporary cuisine. It puts you in the hands of the chef, who crafts exceptionally craveable, mouth-watering bites with a twist in flavour in every item. We take our table on the paved pathway outside the restaurant amidst the iconic Msheireb buildings. You’ll forget you’re in Doha as you embrace the metropolitan ambience. Everything is ontrend, if we do say so ourselves, from the marble table-tops, and metallic light to the wooden plate setting. Our host takes our order, but we leave the drinks up to him, and he delivers. Judging by our personalities and picks from the menu, our host deciphers our taste preferences and leaves us sipping until the very last drop — he is truly a magician in his form bringing us a Raspberry Saketini and a Paradaisu (all drinks are nonenhanced). The Raspberry Saketini is a strong and exotic blend of raspberry and coconut syrup, while the Paradaisu is a fusion of lychee, strawberry, mint, and butterfly pea syrup, bringing us 68

a delicious and peculiarly refreshing flavour. We know this culinary journey is bound to be exquisite as the table is adorned with our starters; the Crunchy Crab Tower and the Beef Ribs Gayoza. The crab tower is a decadent display of crab flakes, tobiko, sesame oil, and a refreshing in-house dressing that brings the dish to life. The gayoza however is already famous, and for good reason. These little dumplings may look small, but they are packed with juicy meaty flavours of tender Wagyu ribs, wrapped in beetroot skin, and garnished with absolute deliciousness — we call it ‘love at first bite’. Before we head on to our mains, we also indulge in the L.A Rainbow Roll, a spicy maki encompassing strong flavours that blend for the perfect explosion of savoury zest and infusions of seafood bliss. Diving deeper into the menu, we take on the tender, juicy Lamb Chops, glazed with a quirky crunchy pistachio crust and char su, with a side of beef jus. Each cut and bite is followed by an audible “ahhh,” at the table, a sure sign of satisfaction. We also order the creamiest Ricotta & Spinach Ravioli, a simple dish but truly a bite of heaven, with the secret ingredient for the filling— you’ll need to make a reservation to find out. We end this gastronomical journey with the Reberu Honey Cake. This little tower of sinful caramel and, hazelnut-azella, chocolate mousse, and a honey sponge is all encased in a crunchy toffeelike exterior. If the flavours aren’t enough to convince you, then the textures of this dessert should. From intimate ambiance to indulgent cuisine, Reberu is a mustdine for everyone, with a trendy environment, unique dishes, and a pristine location. And be sure to reserve your table well in advance, as this dining destination is popping up to be one of the city’s most popular places. With its delicious menu with a wide array of choices — come for a drink, or a meal, but stay for the experience. ✤

BEYOND COFFEE Busy weeks have us crawling to our favourite cafés for a cup of hot or cold sustenance, and FACT’s Craig Ferriman is no exception, as he makes his way to a local caffeine hub — enter Flat White. fact magazine

71

• ON THE MENU

F

lat White has earned itself quite the name since launching in 2016 and has burgeoned into something of an institution with five branches open now. That’s quite a feat, especially in Doha, where boutique coffee shops are opening their doors in literally every corner of the city. The most recent addition to this local franchise sits at the Iconic 2022 Building. We all know Flat White for its exceptional coffee, cafés at beautiful and scenic, locations, which have made this café a local hub for caffeine enthusiasts in Doha. However, now we’re heading back to take a peek at its menu. Yes, they also serve savoury meals to go with your cup of energy. But before we turn that page on the menu, let’s take a sip of its history, shall we? Flat White is more than just a coffee shop, it’s a proud Qatari brand, set up in Doha by Nasser Al-Naemi and Maryam Al-Bader. These two combined their love of coffee and established a brand with a loyal and keen following. A following that has ‘the usual’, is on a first-name basis with the baristas and has a ‘spot’ in the café. And while coffee is king in this establishment, the menu is equally outstanding for its variety, fusion of flavours, and quality. And now having tried a series of exceptional dishes, we view Flat White through a new lens and realise that it’s a superb place to grab breakfast any time of the day. All-day breakfast? Say no more. Along with being an assortment of tempting goods, the menu

ON THE MENU •

is focused on worldly cuisines. We start our global journey with the most popular dish, as pointed out by our waiter, the London Mornings. This plate arrives with a rainbow of elements, including scrambled eggs, parmesan mushrooms, red cabbage kraut, and in-house baked beans, all served on freshly-baked sourdough bread. The bread is the star of the dish, and let’s face it, we’ve all tried to master the art of making the perfect sourdough in lockdown without success. So, ditch the oven, and make your way over for a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, aroma of heaven. The global theme continues as we bite into the Mexicaninspired Rancheros Mariachi — poached eggs in salsa roja that sit atop fresh avocado and sesame labneh, a combination that livens up our palate with a refreshing kick. We then move to Slow and Steady, a dish that more than nods to the Mediterranean. A leaning tower of sweet potato with poached eggs is served with zesty yoghurt, halloumi cheese, tabbouleh, and pickles. It’s particularly popular, and for good reason. The Mo Rock on Roll is more than just a play on words. It will from now on be our go-to, must-have at Flat White. Served on a loaf of beautiful brioche bread, with a sizeable amount of harissa potatoes, fried chicken breast, za’atar mushrooms, and eggs that sit atop. Another winner in our books is the Champions Toast. Mushroom lovers will be thrilled by the generous helping of Portobello mushrooms, pine nuts, and oats on sourdough bread and fried eggs. It’s a piece of art just waiting to be devoured. Our dishes are accompanied by a tantalising blueberry lemonade, but you can’t go to Flat White and not drink coffee, therefore we ended our gourmet journey with the V60 brew. A beautiful blend of Rwandan beans with notes of molasses, dried apricots, and raisins for a pleasantly fruity finish.

There is more to coffee than you think, as Flat White will teach you. But as we have now learned, there is more to Flat White than just coffee. ✤

andid confession: we’re not really breakfast people. It’s not that we don’t like eating, we just struggle to wake up in time and usually miss it! So, we set the alarm to be sure not to miss the chance to check out Twisted Olive, which is all the rave right now. Located at the foot of the iconic Burj Doha, this is the place where you’ll see city slickers, office workers, Qatari glitterati, gym bunnies and discerning foodies all passing through. The shrubbery that hides the bustle of the big city skyscrapers creates a café oasis indicative of the modern city and our first impression was that this is a lovely place to be. This is an all-day bistro, made in Qatar, and dedicated to an innovative modern menu incorporating local ingredients. You can have afternoon tea, lunch or grab a coffee after work with friends. Breakfast is a hit though and for good reason, too. Tucking into a Turkish twist on a British classic, we begin by tasting the Turkish sesame seed bread which comes with a side plate of Devonshire cream, rosewater and wildflower honey, which we’re now finding ways to justify having every day. The bread is made fresh in-house and the honey is imported but hard to come by. We hope the chef keeps it tightly locked away! Beans and toast may not ordinarily grab us by the title but we’re glad we are persuaded to try it because this is another Turkishinspired treat. A bread with cheesy baked eggs is served as

a portion for one with a side dish of breakfast beans and feta cheese. Not being morning folk, we opt for one of their ginger shots, which come in a corked test tube sitting in a glass with three rocks of ice so you can sip it slowly or down it in one, as we do, injecting a spark of energy and feeling the lovely burn on the throat. Now we feel awake! We get especially excited when the mushrooms on toast arrive. Served on grilled toast, the eyecatching plate features scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, and a decorated Hollandaise drizzle. Sensational. The Mexican breakfast bowl is a popular and hearty option that’s also highly recommended. The bowl contains scrambled eggs, chicken taco mince, avocado, spicy beans, salsa, sour cream and cheddar tortillas. Those with a sweet tooth are spoiled for choice. We are amazed and in awe of the wildflower honey baklava cheesecake that we try. I push my fork through the delicate array of honey nut parcels, pistachios, rose petals and walnuts that mount a buttery and honey-tastic cheesecake. When you go out for something special, you want something a bit different and exciting. The food here will blow your socks off. The staff are exceptionally well trained and really operate as a team remembering that oft-forgotten rule of service, that the customer is everything. This is probably why the place is usually very busy and customers return. We certainly can’t wait to go back and we’d rank it as one of our top food havens in the city. Luckily for the alarm-clock averse like us, you can order anything from the menu there, any time of the day. ✤

BUON APPETITO! Walk into the quaintest and most classically-styled trattoria for a little bit of comfort, warmth, and a whole lot of flavour in the heart of Doha — enter The Italian Job.

W

e found ourselves transported to the streets and aromas of Italy in this little trattoriainspired restaurant. The Italian Job defines comfort food at its cosiest, with rustic furniture, bricked and textured walls, and old-fashioned scenery. You won’t believe you’re not in Italy! The restaurant sits in the backyard of the renowned Radisson Blu Hotel Doha, with a newly introduced outdoor seating area under a cheery, charismatic, and colourful array of fairy lights. Enclosed with a picket fence and just off the pool’s waterfall, this is the cutest outdoor seating we’ve seen in a while. Even though food under colourful hues entices us, we head indoors to truly experience a taste of Italy. Walking in we are greeted by a smiling host, traditional wrought iron railings, and a curved staircase that mimics a modern-day Juliet balcony, straight out of a classic and eternal love story. We head upstairs to take our seats in a booth under the arched ceiling. The perfect seating arrangement for a romantic and intimate dinner. Usually, this little eatery is full of music from its talented singing hosts, who serenade guests throughout the evening, something we hope to see again after the pandemic ends. But for now, we make do with the clashing of pots, sizzling grills, and the Italian melodies that engulf our senses. The menu is a collection of warm flavours ranging from soups to desserts, as we begin our browse for the evening. We start with a hearty bowl of zuppa di pesce alla livornese, a Tuscany-style seafood soup with tomato and herbs. This warm bowl is swarming with deep flavours and gems from the sea and comes with a slice of crusty and flavourful garlic bread. Each spoonful brings rich flavours and comfort to the soul; it’s a warm embrace in a bowl. And for some extra added crunch to accompany the smoothness of the broth, we order and indulge in the fritto croccante ai frutti di mare. A platter that comes adorned with perfectly seasoned and crispy fried calamari, hammour strips, shrimp, and sea scallops with a creamy and tantalising garlic dip. An audible crunch with every bite, no less. For our main dishes, we go for traditional Italian flavours with the risotto ai gambari con punte di asparagi, risotto with prawns and asparagus, and the ravioli di magro al pomodoro e basilico, ricotta and spinach filled ravioli in fresh tomato basil sauce. Simple and stunning dishes that arouse all our taste buds and fill us with happiness and content. Infused with time and love, along with a special seafood broth, the delicate risotto brings out a sea of aromas with every mouthful, accompanied by perfectly cooked shrimps. The

ravioli is set in a thin smooth layer of pasta that erupts a well-seasoned and delicious blend of cheese and spinach. For us, it’s the simplicity in each dish that makes them stand out. To finish off this journey to little Italy, we end our meal with two desserts, because why not? A fresh tiramisu with mascarpone cheese and a chocolate mousse in mint sauce. The chocolate mousse arrives with an enhanced mint sauce and is truly picture perfect. Decadent and rich chocolate mousse, engulfed in a web wafer under a mountain of chocolate shavings and mint leaves. The tiramisu is layers of rich cheese, coffee dust, a shot of espresso for a little extra drizzle, and an authentic Italian Ladyfinger Biscuit or ‘Savoiardi’. This charming dessert serves us an explosion of strong coffee flavours and is the perfect end to our meal. The Italian Job focuses on simple flavours that bring its customers warmth, comfort, and homemade goodness. It’s the perfect place for a night out with friends or a splurge of romance, with serenading waiters who will hopefully make a comeback as things return to normal. We’ve graced this venue quite a few times over the years and we’re always thrilled to find it bustling with laughter, trays of food, and smiles all around. It’s definitely our happy place! ✤

• CHEF IN FOCUS

Who influenced your cooking and the type of things you like to make? My greatest root influence and passion for food generally has arisen subconsciously since I was child, since my mother’s tastes at the table always had some gastronomic feature. My grandparents had a delicious restaurant in my hometown, Thessaloniki, and a very special and popular dish of codfish. Later on, after my culinary institute studies, I had the fortune to gain trust with some of the most talented gastronomy and hospitality leaders from Hotel Brain Group based in Santorini back in 2003-04. One of my mentors was chef to the President of Greece. What did I learn from my mentors? Service excellence and creativity requires practice and a high sense of responsibility but the most important ingredient for success through influence is the passion. Do you remember the first dish you ever made? My first dish was fried eggs and homemade mayonnaise when I was 12 years old, combined with fresh daily bread. I remember it was fun. What’s the biggest similarity between dining or cooking experiences in Greece and Doha? Something special and it very commonly happens on the tables in Greece and Qatar, sharing food! It’s the key which brings people together at the table like families. I love it! What’s something you hope your guests experience when they dine at HELLAS Restaurant? HELLAS is a casual restaurant with a comfortable atmosphere for individuals, couples, groups or families. We want guests to feel like they’re at home, with our cooking and décor. What is your favourite element, food or venue, about HELLAS Restaurant? We are located at Katara Beach South Plaza. Once I step into the ambience of a Greek island house with a charming seaside view and a pure white with blue interior, it takes me back to Greece. This atmosphere in combination with the Greek flavours is a perfect getaway for anyone in the city. If you had to choose, and looking at the menu we imagine it’s going to be a hard decision, what’s your favourite thing to cook and eat off the menu? Greek Mousaka is my all-time classic mummy and yummy favourite. Can you name one ingredient you love cooking with? One of my favourite ingredients is seafood. It’s rich in nutritional elements and doesn’t need a lot of time to be cooked. Even though it has to be handled wisely, through some simple cooking methods it’s possible to bring out all the delicate texture, natural flavours and aromas. 84

What city would you travel to for the food alone? I do respect all the food cultures and it’s hard to pick only one city. In my last journey, curiosity drove me to Australia so I had some Kangaroo Kebabs, and I can describe them as delicious! My future gastronomic destinations are Spain and Japan. What is your ultimate comfort food? Gyros are the ultimate comfort food. Similar to shawarma and so different at the same time, wrapped in a Greek pita with tzatziki. Are there any cooking gadgets you can’t live without? When I am in the kitchen, a timer and thermometer are always in my mind. Spoons are always next to me. We’ve noticed that chefs tend to cook simple meals when at home, what is your go-to dish to prepare on your night off? An omelette or a steak are my great options for a home-alone dinner. Also, another truth is the cooking at home is equal with the love of family. ✤

voice will automatically turn into a whisper as you converse with the receptionist about your preferred treatment, the atmosphere so serene that you could hear a pin drop. While we wait to be guided into the changing rooms, we are offered a hot cup of soothing but strong ginger tea and a warm toilette. Doha’s been a little chilly these days, so it’s the perfect way to prepare the body for a relaxing journey ahead with the Sleep Improvement Massage. This Saray Spa signature massage is designed to help de-stress and reconnect the body and mind. It focuses on the mind and aims at balancing body energy, inducing deep relaxation, leading to better downtime and sleep. After a quick change, we are guided to our massage suite through a wooden hallway surrounded by candlelight that bounces off the walls emitting a romantic glow. We are given a complete suite to ourselves with an attached bathroom and a

large closet. Before we begin our main treatment, our masseuse leads us to a chair where she washes our feet in a golden bowl of hot water and rose petals, with some milk and cleansing salts. It’s definitely the royal treatment. As we make our way to the massage bed, we’re delighted to see another warm bowl of water, adorned with rose petals under the headrest — no more awkwardly looking at the floor. The water wafts up warm steam that opens our lungs and gives us views of floating petals that allow the mind to wander off into bliss as the masseuse makes her way around. The massage begins with light pressure applied to the whole of the body over the towel, allowing the body to prepare for the pressure to follow. Every part follows the same procedure, warm oil is lathered onto the skin and then pressure points are carefully located before applying the long kneading strokes that soothe and tone as we lie face down on the bed and fall into deep relaxation. This massage works on the shoulders, hands, back, legs, and feet and targets the pineal gland — this gland produces melatonin, a hormone that modulates and aids sleeping patterns. We then turn over, here the massage solely concentrates on the shoulders, as it makes its way up to an ever so blissful scalp massage. However, the journey to relaxation doesn’t end here. As our bodies lie recovering from the pressure, the masseuse brings forward two Tibetan Singing Bowls. These are used to promote relaxation through their production of sounds and vibrations when hit or circled with a mallet. The bowls, a little too heavy for this editor’s body, are instead placed by the legs. The vibrations given off protrude through the skin, awakening every brain and body cell, and uplifting the soul. This 90-minute journey soon comes to an end with a cup of ginger tea, water, and sweets waiting for us in the relaxation room. As we leave Saray Spa, we take the relaxation, tranquillity, and peace earned, with us. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About Harry and Meghan’s Baby

Captain Tom’s funeral

Beans on…Bix?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, otherwise known as Britain’s Prince Harry and his American wife Meghan Markle, have announced that they’re expecting a second child. Great news? You’d think so, right? But though the initial statement was welcomed by international media, it wasn’t long before the couple were being accused of overshadowing news of the birth of his cousin Princess Eugenie’s first child. There were even snide remarks about their choice of photograph to

We recently said farewell to Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old British former WWII serviceman who won hearts around the world. In April last year, in the run up to his 100th birthday and at the start of the pandemic, he began walking lengths of his garden, with his frame, aiming to raise £1,000 for the UK’s National Health Service. Word of his quest got out and he became a national and then international hero, far surpassing his original goal – in fact, he actually raised around £39 million! In recognition of his achievement, he was

Beans, beans are good for your heart… we all know the rest of the rhyme, right? We also all know that baked beans, especially those from Heinz, have their allotted place in the world and that’s on toast, right? So, it’s no surprise that indignation, nay fury, and not a little disgust erupted across the Twittersphere at a suggestion that beans should be served on Weetabix biscuits! What the actual? Weetabix itself was responsible for the Tweet which claimed: “Why should bread have all the fun,
