Keeping It Close to Home

“When you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance.” – Anonymous.

This month, we’re turning our attention to all things local. There’s something satisfying about rediscovering what’s right on your doorstep, especially when you start to realise how much there is to enjoy right here at home. Our cover story leads the way with a roundup of some of the island’s best staycations. From beachfront resorts to city hotels, it’s a reminder that a change of pace doesn’t always require a boarding pass.

Continuing the theme, our second feature spotlights Bahrain's growing community of homegrown brands. From hand-poured candles and artisan soaps to jewellery inspired by Khaleeji heritage, there’s loads to explore. It’s a chance to shop with intention, support local brands and perhaps find something a little more personal along the way.

Out and about, there’s plenty happening this month. Bahrainouna has launched a National Values Icons design contest, while Diriyah Art Futures is calling on New Media artists to apply for its year-long programme. Music-wise, Husa & Zeyada bring their live electronic sound to The Art Hotel & Resort, and if your weekends revolve around good food, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay offers two fabulous brunch experiences.

On the dining front, we’ve been making our rounds. Alusia at City Centre Bahrain reveals a mix of Levantine and Spanish flavours, London favourite Chestnut Bakery makes its Bahrain debut and at Al Liwan, China Garden serves familiar favourites. We also sit down with SOUL’s Founder Chef, Fadwa Almutawah, to talk about her culinary journey.

Revving it up, we spend time with the Porsche Cayenne Black Edition and look at the latest regional and international launches, alongside a conversation with Mohammed Al Muhanna, Brand Manager at Maserati Bahrain. This month also sees us in Geneva for a special showcase on Watches and Wonders 2026, taking a look at the pieces that caught our eye this year.

Elsewhere, our travel pages take a turn off the beaten track, focussing on destinations that still feel under the radar, while in arts and culture, we speak with Bahraini textile artist Marwa Ali Ahmed about her craft.

And, as always, we keep you on trend with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment. So, make the most of what’s around you this month – you just might be surprised at what you find!

Bye for now...

OPEN CALL FOR NATIONAL VALUES ICONS CONTEST

The National Plan, Bahrainouna, launches a countrywide design contest calling on creatives to transform its national values into a unified set of icons, with a mega prize up for grabs.

Bahrain is inviting its creative community to think about national identity in a more visual, hands-on way through a new design initiative. Launched under the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and announced by His Excellency Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, the National Plan to Promote National Belonging and Reinforce the Values of Citizenship (Bahrainouna) aims to strengthen national belonging and reinforce the values that define Bahraini society. One of the more engaging parts of this initiative is Bahrain's National Values Icons Contest, a public call for designers, artists and creatives across the island to transform the Kingdom's 18 national values into a unified visual and contemporary design style that represent the national identity. These range from belonging, loyalty and pride to social values like tolerance, coexistence and social responsibility. Others focus on political values like democracy and public participation, as well as human rights including freedom, justice and equality. The contest is open to all citizens and residents aged 15 and above, and submissions may be made individually or as a team of two. The winning designer or team will receive a cash prize of BD1,000, along with the distinction of having their work officially adopted as part of the Bahrainouna National Plan identity guide. There are a few ground rules to follow. All work must be

original and unpublished. AI tools can help in early research or brainstorming, but the final designs must be created by the participant using professional software.

Designers are required to follow a modern 'flat design' approach, featuring a unified visual language with consistent proportions, lines and shapes. They must also complete a submission form explaining their creative concept, artistic vision and how the design aligns with the national values.

Submissions will be evaluated in two stages. First, a preliminary screening will be carried out by a specialist jury to review entries and select a shortlist. From there, the final decision will be based on a combination of jury evaluation (70%) and a public vote conducted online (30%). Entries will be assessed on creativity, originality, visual consistency, clarity of symbolism and suitability for digital and print use.

The deadline for submissions is May 14, and entries should be sent via email to contest@bahrainouna.com with the required details and completed design files. ✤

BRUNCH YOUR WAY THIS MAY

Looking ahead to the weekend? Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay offers two brunch styles this month, giving you the choice between a relaxed, refined setting or a more upbeat, social afternoon.

There’s something about Fridays that sets the tone for the entire weekend, especially when brunch is involved. This month, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay keeps things classy and cool with two different brunch experiences, each with its own pace and personality, but both built around good food and an easy, sociable atmosphere.

Friday Brunch at CUT by Wolfgang Puck returns with a family-style brunch made for sharing. Dishes arrive at the table in a steady flow to be enjoyed together, from Black Bass Ceviche and Beef Sliders to line-caught fish and premium steak selections. Executive Chef Brian Becher and his team keep the focus on well-executed classics, while a curated selection of beverages is served tableside. It runs every Friday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, with three packages available: BD36 net including soft drinks, BD50 net with selected beverages and BD70 net for the premium bubbly option.

Over at Bahrain Bay Kitchen, Fridays take on a vibrant rhythm with the Latin American Brunch, held throughout May. Gather family and friends as bright, sun-kissed dishes and a lively atmosphere bring a festive feel to a Latin feast that feels both celebratory and relaxed. Begin with refreshing seabass ceviches and fresh lobster, before moving to the heart of the experience, with live stations

serving Ancho Chilli-Braised Short Ribs, freshly prepared quesadillas, as well as a dedicated tacos and nachos bar with house-made guacamole and salsa verde. There’s plenty more to linger over, including authentic favourites such as Pastel Azteca and slow-braised enchiladas, as well as a dessert spread of warm cinnamon churros, tres leches, avocado lime cheesecake and a custom crêpe station. Live music carries through the afternoon, while younger guests have their own playful corner with a dedicated buffet, jumping castle and a mascot making the rounds.

A fun day out for the whole family, the brunch takes place every Friday from 1pm to 4pm, priced at BD35 net including soft drinks or BD48 net with a Selected Beverage Package. Depending on what you’re in the mood for this month, brunches at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay bring the vibes with good food, a comfortable setting and enough going on to make the afternoon feel well spent. ✤

ELECTRONIC MUSIC DUO COMES TO BAHRAIN

Get ready for a night of live electronic music and instrumentation, as Good Neighbour presents Husa & Zeyada Live at The Art Hotel & Resort, bringing together guitar, vocals and club vibes.

Something a little different is heading to the island this month, as Good Neighbour brings Egyptian Canadian duo Husa & Zeyada to the stage at The Art Hotel & Resort in Amwaj Islands, for a one-of-a-kind live show that goes beyond the standard DJ format.

Taking place on May 15 from 12pm until late, the event builds from afternoon into the night, promising a full-day escape through music and energy. Unlike a traditional DJ set, Husa & Zeyada actually perform, blending electronic sounds with live guitar and vocals, creating a dynamic and immersive performance that fuses club energy with live artistry. Their sound is deep, melodic and emotionally driven, taking you on an unpredictable journey from warm, atmospheric grooves into powerful, high-energy moments. The duo, made up of Adam Husa and Zeyada, first began working together during the 2020 lockdown, combining the two distinct styles of Zeyada’s synth-soaked bedroom pop with Adam’s late-night deep house. Together, they’ve landed on a fresh, experimental sound that sits somewhere between indie dance electronica and psychedelic rock,

with lyrics in both English and Arabic. The duo is known to have no boundaries when it comes to sound exploration. That approach shows up in their studio work and carries into their live sets, which they've performed at some of the world's biggest stages, including Stereo Montreal, Fusion Festival, Children Of Panacea, Sandbox Festival, Grand Factory, Code Dubai and more. Alongside the music, they’ve also created a comicinspired, parallel world of film and animation, told through the lens of music videos and social media reels.

Supporting Husa & Zeyada at the event are guest DJs Mysterioo Arif, Kristina V, Katrin Love and Alrawi, rounding out a lineup that covers every corner of the dance floor. Entry is by RSVP only, with limited spots available for what’s set to be a standout event on the calendar. ✤ GO: WHATSAPP 7710 7777 OR FOLLOW @GOODNEIGHBOUR.BH ON INSTAGRAM FOR TICKETS AND MORE INFORMATION.

In Phase 2, participants will work personally under the mentorship of leading artists and scholars to produce new artworks using DAF's world-class facilities, including advanced audio-visual techniques, immersive reality, coding, sensing, machine learning and spatial audio-visual environments. Artists are invited to explore a range of contemporary fields in New Media Arts, including reality and artificial reality; sound, cinema and immersive creation; and humans and artificial intelligence. Time with the Porsche Cayenne Black Edition made one thing clear: the smallest changes often have the greatest impact. A

DARKER EDGE TO A FAMILIAR SHAPE

There’s something about a blacked-out Porsche that immediately changes the tone. The Cayenne Black Edition arrived with a sense of intent, its details suggesting more than a simple styling exercise. Over a few days behind the wheel, it quickly became clear this wasn’t just about how it looked but how it carried itself on the road.

From early commutes to longer highway runs, it slipped easily into daily life. It didn’t ask for attention, yet it consistently held it – and more than once, we found ourselves taking the long way without much justification.

Presence, Refined

The Cayenne Black Edition leans confidently into its name, with high-gloss black elements woven throughout the design. The SportDesign front apron, black exterior package and blackfinished Porsche lettering and model designation gave the SUV a more purposeful, focussed look.

Even the finer details stood out. The 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, finished in black with polished surfaces, added contrast without overplaying it, while the tinted HD-Matrix LED headlights brought a sharper, more defined expression to the front. What stood out most to us was how cohesive everything felt. Nothing appeared added for the sake of it. The widened rear stance of the coupé body, paired with clean surfaces and subtle aerodynamic touches, gave the Cayenne a planted, athletic presence that carried well in any setting, whether parked or in motion.

Built Around You

Inside, the Black Edition continues with a more understated, premium approach. Brushed black aluminium trim runs across the dashboard and doors, paired with black leather upholstery covering the seats, steering wheel and centre console.

The 14-way electrically adjustable comfort seats with memory function made it easy to settle into a driving position within minutes. Once set, it stayed that way – no constant readjusting. Just sit, press start and go.

Space was equally impressive. With 554 litres of luggage space expanding when the seats are folded, the Cayenne handled everything we threw at it – including heavy loads, awkward shapes and the kind of packing that somehow looks organised until you close the boot.

The fixed panoramic roof added a sense of openness, while ambient lighting subtly lifted the cabin at night. It all came together in a way that felt premium without becoming overwhelming.

Digital Done Right

Technology in the Cayenne Black Edition felt intuitive from the outset. The central infotainment system responded quickly, with clear menus and a layout that didn’t test our patience levels. The curved digital instrument display added a modern touch, offering configurable views that kept key information exactly where we wanted it. Voice control and wireless smartphone charging made daily use seamless, while the BOSE surround sound system delivered clear, well-balanced sound throughout, proving genuinely impressive during our drive.

What impressed us most was how everything worked together. Nothing felt buried or overly complicated – it was simply there when needed, which meant we just got on with using it.

Power, Without Pause

Under the bonnet, the Cayenne Black Edition is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 producing 353PS and 500Nm of torque. Lean into the throttle and it pulls – strong, clean and immediate. There’s no waiting for it – which became clear sooner than expected. The Cayenne gathers speed with a steady surge that quickly turns into serious pace, the run to 100km/h in just under six seconds arriving before you’ve had time to think about it.

The eight-speed automatic transmission keeps everything flowing, shifting quickly and cleanly, while the all-wheel-drive system gives you the confidence to stay on it without hesitation. What stood out most to us was how it held that speed. As the road opened up, it felt planted and eager, encouraging you to keep pushing – and making it surprisingly easy to do so.

The Cayenne Black Edition leans confidently into its name, with high-gloss black elements woven throughout the design.”

Intelligent Protection

Driver assistance systems in the Cayenne Black Edition felt comprehensive without making a point of it. The surround-view camera system and active parking assistance made manoeuvring easier, particularly in tighter spaces.

Lane change assist and adaptive cruise control added confidence on longer drives, while forward collision warning and braking assistance stepped in quietly in busier environments.

The HD-Matrix LED headlights also stood out. Their ability to adapt lighting precisely to road and traffic conditions meant visibility remained excellent without drawing attention to themselves. What we appreciated most was how these systems supported the drive without getting in the way. They were there when needed – and, for the most part, left us to get on with the drive.

A Confident Finish

By the end of our time with the Porsche Cayenne Black Edition, one thing stood out: this is a vehicle that refines rather than reinvents. It takes everything the Cayenne already does well and sharpens it – visually, dynamically and experientially. It’s comfortable when you need it to be, engaging when you want it to be and always feels composed. More importantly, it fits seamlessly into everyday life while still delivering those moments that remind you why the Cayenne is not so easy to walk away from. ✤

DESIGNED FOR DRIVING PLEASURE

The latest addition to the Porsche family is the 911 GT3 S/C, promising a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and manual transmission along with the joy of soft-top motoring.

The new model combines a range of ‘driver's car’ qualities that have already delighted customers of the limited-edition 911 Speedster and 911 S/T models.

For the first time, Porsche is introducing a 911 GT3 with a fully automatic convertible roof. The model has been created especially with driving pleasure in mind, combining the lightweight design of the 911 S/T with the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre boxer engine of the 911 GT3, producing 375kW (510PS) and 450Nm of torque.

The distinctive wings and doors of the 911 S/T in combination with the black windscreen surround give the new 911 GT3 S/C an unmistakable look. And lightweight materials have been used throughout, such as the carbon fibre bonnet, wings and doors.

In line with its positioning as a driver's car, this special model is available exclusively with a lightweight short-ratio six-speed manual sports transmission. The 911 GT3 S/C is the only open-top variant in the current 911 range that is designed as a pure twoseater (with four-way adjustable sports seats) – reminiscent of the 911 Speedster from 2019. Unlike the Speedster, however, the 911 GT3 S/C is not a limited-edition model. The new Street Style

Package is also available for the 911 GT3 S/C, which allows the vehicle to be tailored even more precisely to individual tastes. ✤

A TRIBUTE TO MOTORSPORT HERITAGE

The iconic 1965 Monte Carlo Rally-winning Mini Cooper S is being celebrated in the form of a new MINI edition.

No other city has motorsport more deeply rooted in its history than Monte Carlo. MINI has enjoyed tremendous success within the principality, particularly in 1965, when the legendary Mini Cooper S, driven by Timo Mäkinen and co-driver Paul Easter, took victory at the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.

At the time, the car was praised for its innovative technology, elegant performance and agility under extreme weather conditions. Now the car maker has replicated and modernised that in the form of the new MINI 1965 Victory Edition.

The new edition is offered for the MINI John Cooper Works model which has an impressive 231hp and a maximum torque of 380Nm, sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

In homage to the legendary motorsports colours of the 1960s, Chili Red exterior paintwork is accentuated by a white trim stripe extending from bonnet to roof and rear. As an exclusive trademark, a white ‘52’ graphic adorns both sides of the vehicle –echoing the 1965 original.

Inside, the striking door sill showcases white 1965 writing on a red and black background and each model of the edition features a dedication on the inside of the door reflecting information about

the bygone rally.

The interior is based on the traditional JCW colour palette and the familiar JCW-Trim with edition-specific details. ✤

A SPORTY NEW SALOON

MG Motor Middle East has introduced its latest model for the region, the 2026 MG GT featuring enhanced design and technology.

Sharper styling, enhanced powertrain performance, a more premium interior and an expanded safety suite are all brought together under the tagline: ‘The Rebel, Reborn’.

The first-generation MG GT built a strong following among drivers who demanded sporty style without compromise and the new model honours that legacy while pushing further in every dimension. Inspired by MG’s storied motorsport heritage, it blends dynamic performance with agile handling and a confident, road-commanding design, powered by a choice of two MEGA Tech engines.

The 1.5L Turbo produces a maximum 168hp and 275Nm of torque, paired with an all-new Next-Generation DCT gearbox. The 1.5L naturally aspirated unit delivers 109hp and 140Nm of torque, matched to a new Intelligent CVT transmission for a composed, fuel-efficient drive. Both are front-wheel drive.

On the outside, the MG GT makes an immediate statement. A bold waterfall-inspired grille with vertical detailing leads the front, complemented by functional side air ducts and sharp LED headlamps. The coupe-style roofline flows into an aerodynamic ducktail, while split 3D LED racetrack tail lamps create a distinctive night-time signature. A wide 1,842mm stance and low hood reinforce its athletic proportions, with Turbo variants riding on 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Inside, a floating 10.25-inch HD touchscreen and fully digital instrument display keep all key information within easy reach, while an aircraft throttle-style gear shifter and turbine-style dual air vents reinforce the sporting intent. The cabin is finished in dual-tone trims with extensive soft-touch materials throughout, and higher trim levels add a power-adjustable driver’s seat and wide-opening electric sunroof.

The new MG GT offers a strong blend of technology and safety across three trim levels, starting with the 1.5L COM. Key features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry with push-button start and a comprehensive

suite of safety systems, including Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and Emergency Brake Assist.

The 1.5T COM introduces a turbocharged powertrain alongside added convenience features such as a 360-degree camera and electric sunroof, while the range-topping 1.5T LUX offers a more premium cabin and advanced driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Traffic Jam Assist – making it the most comprehensively equipped MG GT to date.

MG GT customers can also benefit from a six-year / 200,000km warranty (whichever comes first), available across the Middle East. Reflecting MG’s confidence in the quality and durability of its vehicles, it provides added peace of mind throughout the ownership journey. This is further supported by MG’s established aftersales network, including regional spare parts warehouses in Dubai and Jeddah, ensuring high parts availability and efficient service across key markets. ✤

SMARTER, SHARPER, STRONGER

fact spent a few days with the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra — discovering a flagship that blends standout privacy, serious performance and genuinely useful AI.

Straight Out the Box

As the top-tier model in the latest lineup from Samsung Electronics, the Galaxy S26 Ultra arrived with big expectations. After spending a few days with it, what stood out wasn’t just its power, but how naturally it fits into everyday life. It feels less like a device you operate and more like one that quietly works alongside you.

Privacy Built In

The 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED display is as sharp and fluid as you’d expect, but the real headline is the built-in Privacy Display — an industry first for smartphones. With a quick toggle, the screen narrows its viewing angles so dramatically that even someone standing right next to you can’t clearly see what’s on display. It’s subtle in use, but incredibly effective. The ability to apply it only to certain apps or just notifications makes it feel thoughtful rather than intrusive, and genuinely useful in everyday situations.

Powered to Perform

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, and the difference is immediately noticeable. Everything we threw at it — from multitasking to demanding apps — felt instant. Animations are silky, switching between tasks is seamless, and there’s a sense that the phone is always one step ahead of you. What impressed us most is how consistent the performance is. Even during extended use, it stayed smooth and responsive, backed by improved thermal management and efficiency that comfortably carried us through a full day without concern.

The S Pen: Small Tool, Big Impact

One of the Ultra’s defining features remains the built-in S Pen. Having a pen that’s always there, always charged and ready to go sounds simple, but in practice it becomes indispensable very quickly. We found ourselves using it more than expected — from jotting

Everything we threw at it — from multitasking to demanding apps — felt instant.” “

down notes to navigating with precision. It adds a level of control and creativity that few smartphones can match, and quickly becomes part of how you use the device.

Picture Perfect

The camera system continues Samsung’s reputation for reliability. Photos came out bright, well-balanced and consistently flattering, with improved low-light performance thanks to wider apertures. It’s the kind of camera that makes you confident you’ll get the shot without overthinking it.

Video is equally strong, with impressive stabilisation and features like Horizon Lock helping keep footage smooth and level, even when moving.

AI: Working Smarter, Not Harder

Galaxy AI is everywhere here, but it rarely feels overwhelming. From call screening to intuitive photo editing and smart suggestions, it quietly reduces the effort needed to get things done throughout the day.

Our Final Call

The Galaxy S26 Ultra doesn’t rely on one standout feature — although it certainly has a few. Instead, it delivers a refined, intelligent experience where everything just works.

After a few days, it became the kind of device we reached for without thinking — a clear sign of how easily it fits into everyday life ✤ GO: VISIT SAMSUNG.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

In Conversation with… Mohammed Al Muhanna

With a career spanning two decades in the automotive sector, the Brand Manager of Maserati Bahrain at Euro Motors specialises in luxury and premium cars. He shares his passion for the brand, its distinctive edge in the market and his favourite Maserati model.

What does Maserati represent to you on a personal level, and how does that influence the way you approach your role as Brand Manager?

To me, Maserati represents the perfect balance between performance and elegance – an emotional brand that goes beyond mobility to deliver a true lifestyle experience. It embodies heritage, craftsmanship and individuality. On a personal level, this inspires me to approach my role with a strong focus on preserving the brand’s DNA while making it relevant to our market. Every decision – whether commercial, experiential or strategic – is guided by one principle: ensuring that every customer interaction reflects the sophistication and passion that Maserati stands for.

With its recent launch at The Avenues – Bahrain, what sets the Maserati Showroom and Service Clinic apart in terms of design, customer experience and after-sales services?

Our new facility at The Avenues is designed to deliver a seamless and immersive luxury journey. From the architectural layout to the smallest design details, the showroom reflects Maserati’s Italian identity – minimalistic yet refined.

What truly sets us apart is the integration between sales and after-sales within one premium environment. Beyond that, the location itself was strategically selected to enhance the ownership experience. Clients can make the most of their time by enjoying shopping and leisure activities at The Avenues while

their vehicles are being serviced. Additionally, the destination appeal of Bahrain allows us to extend this experience to Maserati owners from the Eastern Province, offering them the convenience of servicing their vehicles while enjoying a premium lifestyle visit. It transforms a routine service appointment into a more rewarding and enjoyable experience.

In a market filled with strong competitors, what do you believe gives Maserati its distinct edge in Bahrain?

Maserati’s edge lies in its uniqueness. Unlike mass luxury brands, Maserati offers exclusivity combined with a rich racing heritage and unmistakable design language. In Bahrain, where customers are highly discerning, this individuality resonates strongly. Our clients are not just looking for a luxury vehicle – they are seeking something that reflects their personality. Maserati delivers that emotional connection, along with performance and craftsmanship that stand apart from conventional offerings.

If you had to pick one Maserati model that perfectly captures the brand’s spirit, which would it be and why?

I would choose the Maserati MCPura. It represents the future of Maserati while staying true to its racing roots. The MCPura is a statement of innovation, with its advanced engineering and striking design, yet it retains the soul and emotion that define the brand. It’s a perfect example of how Maserati continues to evolve without losing its identity.

When you’re not thinking about cars, what’s your go-to way to unwind and recharge?

Basketball has always been more than just a sport to me – it’s a mindset. As a former player, stepping back onto the court still gives me a sense of clarity, focus and renewed energy. It reminds me of the value of discipline, teamwork and pushing beyond limits – principles that I carry into my professional life every day. Beyond that, I find inspiration in spending meaningful time with family and close friends. These moments help me stay grounded and provide the balance needed to continuously grow, both personally and professionally. ✤

SOULFUL FOOD

A successful entrepreneur at only 27-years-old, Fadwa Almutawah, Founder Chef at SOUL, is the perfect example of turning passion into a profession. She shares the inspiration behind the restaurant, her experience as a private chef and her special signature dish.

You studied law, so what led you to pursue cooking professionally?

I studied law but I have always loved cooking and have always been drawn to building something of my own. Over time, cooking became a comfort zone that I could always go to whenever I was down or needed a lift. The kitchen gave me purpose – it wasn’t just a hobby; it was something I could turn into a career, so I decided to go for what felt more like me and who I want to be.

What inspired you and your sister to open SOUL, and what’s it like working together day to day?

We were really obsessed with the thought of soul food or comfort food – something that really satisfies your cravings. We wanted to create something that reflects who we are, and we saw there was a big gap in the Bahraini market for something more authentic and personal.

Working together was challenging but at the same time we complemented each other in so many aspects.

As a private chef, what’s the most unusual or memorable request you’ve received from a client?

One of the most unusual requests I received was when a client wanted me to recreate his normal everyday food as fine dining – such as an egg sandwich!

What’s your signature dish at SOUL and what makes it special?

At SOUL, all of the burgers I make are a signature for me as I pour my heart into each one of them. But if I had to choose, it would have to be ‘The Unusual’ beef burger – it’s so simple yet so good! I have always been on the search for the best burger for some inspiration, but most burgers rely on the classic sauce (ketchup or mayonnaise), so I created my own direction and went for a peppercorn sauce smashed burger topped with triple American cheese, caramalised onions for sweetness and pickle on the side to balance the flavours! ✤

FUSION FLAVOURS HIT THE SPOT

A mix of Levantine and Spanish cuisines makes for an interesting menu, as Liz O’Reilly discovered on a visit to Alusia at City Centre Bahrain.

Alusia is found on the top floor of the mall, close to the cinema. And being among a number of other eateries, I knew it would need to be pretty special to stand out. I need not have worried. Once inside, the design quickly brings the atmosphere and strategic placement of internal columns, trees and greenery mostly cloaks the outside.

Ochre-painted walls bring a definite Mediterranean feel enhanced by citrus trees and lots of foliage. One wall reveals an impressive tile mosaic of an olive tree while another shows an avenue of painted trees stretching away into the distance, feeling almost as if you’re in an Andalusian garden rather than Bahrain’s largest shopping centre.

Seating comes in a variety of forms, from comfy banquettes strewn with plump olive- or lemon-patterned cushions to marble-topped tables lit by tasselled, floral hanging lamps. Comfortable, deeply cushioned chairs pick up the accents of the lamps, while rounded booths are also available for a little more privacy. Mosaic work on some tables and the ceiling gives added interest, alongside a series of deep ceiling vaults and columns that add a sense of grandeur to the space.

A tile-bedecked open oven allowed a glimpse of the chefs preparing all manner of dough- and pastry-based goodies, and the aroma rising from its depths immediately set our mouths watering. We were quickly seated and a succession of dishes began to arrive, the first of which was the Alusia Fattoush – quite a departure from the usual lettuce and cucumber mix. There was still plenty of greenery and crispy fried pitta in golden strands, but the addition of silky avocado chunks and fat, crunchy asparagus brought added richness and textural contrast. The dressing, featuring pomegranate molasses, was also very good – deep, sweet, yet lightly tart, perfect to cut through the richness of the avocado. A serving of velvety hummus – silky smooth and reassuringly familiar – came next, accompanied by Muhammara which proved a big hit at the table due to a little extra something. A hint of chilli dropped into the mix alongside smoky walnuts, red bell peppers, creamy tahina and pomegranate molasses. Topped by sliced pistachios, the gentle heat alongside the earthy depth of the walnuts, transformed a regular dip into something much more complex that we went back to time and again throughout the meal. For a sense of occasion, Sautéed Gambas arrived on a hot skillet in bubbling olive oil, giving off an enticing aroma of garlic before we even got to see them. The meat was perfectly cooked, firm and juicy with a light heat from sliver-thin slices of bright red chilli and bright, tangy parsley. I could have eaten just this and left satisfied. Sfiha came as small slices of puffy, blistered flat bread topped with minced meat. I don’t usually go for minced meat but this was good quality, tasty and not greasy at all, plus the mix of onions, tomatoes and pinenuts coupled with the chewy charred bread gave it a lovely flavour/texture combination.

The chicken skewer arrived looking impressive on an upright rod, accompanied by French fries and a seriously garlicky cream sauce –tender and tasty, the light char from the grill gave way to a juicy centre, both flavour and presentation making this feel like a special treat. The place was beginning to fill up with groups and families chatting and laughing over late lunch and mid-afternoon snacks

when, already over-stuffed, we took a break to check out the drinks menu. It includes several interesting mocktails and we decided on a jug of ruby red Sangria. Its fruity mix of red grape juice, orange and cranberry brought a distinctly holiday flavour to the table as we joined in the chatter. Next up, Oriental Rice with Lamb was unexpected. Not just superbly tasty, I found it surprisingly light for a meat dish of such substance. The spiced aromatic rice was lightly seasoned – enough to excite but not overwhelm – and the lamb, generous sizeable chunks, literally fell apart at the touch of a fork, separating into tender flakes that melted on the tongue. The side dish of fresh cucumber and yoghurt was a welcome, though not really necessary, addition. Truly a Levantine staple and comfort on a plate.

We couldn’t complete the savoury selection without trying the house speciality of paella and we went for the seafood version – bomba rice with tiger prawns, shrimp, baby squid and clams seasoned with Spanish saffron and Andalusian olive oil. The huge prawns were sweet, slightly earthy and brought a definite flavour of the sea, enhanced by the briny prawns and lightly nutty squid. The bomba rice was fat and tender having absorbed the saffron stock for a rich, bold mouthful. Honestly, I barely had space for more than a spoonful, but it was delightfully memorable and worth a return visit.

Lastly, the desserts didn’t disappoint. The Muhalabiya was given a twist, the traditional creamy, milk pudding getting a rich topping of mango puree that added an additional layer of indulgence. And the kunafa came in a burst of contrast, the salty, tangy cheese melting into strings as I cut through the crisply fried kataifi dough. Smothered in sugar syrup, it was one of my favourite dishes of

the day and the perfect end to our combination feast. We rounded out our visit with teas, coffees and more of that yummy Sangria as the afternoon drifted to early evening. The attentive staff kept an eye on us, without ever being intrusive and, when the time came to leave, it really felt as if we’d experienced a Mediterranean treat on a weekday afternoon.

As an aside, I should also mention that, though it’s not what we were there for, Alusia has just introduced a series of breakfast platters. I sneaked a bite of the Spanish omelette and grilled halloumi, and I definitely feel a weekend visit coming on to try some more of the menu. Safe to say, I’ll be back. ✤

A LONDON FAVOURITE COMES TO BAHRAIN

A

of

and

blend
chic settings
delicious delights awaited Apple Sharma, as she headed to Chestnut Bakery to explore the island’s hottest new eatery.

Since news of Chestnut Bakery opening in Bahrain reached my ears, I’ve been waiting eagerly to try it. This Kuwaiti-born, London-based café has made a name for itself for its award-winning croissants, which I couldn’t wait to devour (more on that later).

Located in the chic Harbour Heights complex, with enviable views overlooking the glistening blue waters, Chestnut Bakery is the ideal hotspot to see and be seen. I took a moment on the terrace, catching some rays while watching a yacht bob gently to the slow rhythm of the balmy afternoon.

The café’s relaxed yet stylish exterior carries through inside, with a palette of white, beige and tan across the ceiling, wooden framework and comfy seating. Modern minimalist décor lends a calm ambience, with white hanging lamps, potted olive trees and shelves filled with knick-knacks – from vases and teapots to books and even a vintagestyle weighing scale – giving it character. A bold abstract painting adds colour, while long horizontal mirrors with reading lamps atop cushioned sofas add a contemporary, elegant touch.

Near the entrance, a glass display of scrumptious viennoiseries immediately caught my eye, lined with sweet and savoury croissants alongside cakes, cookies and mini desserts. Beside it was the semi-open kitchen, where I could see the chefs preparing flatbreads, ready to be flung into the woodfire oven. Between the two, any attempt at restraint quickly faded and I couldn’t wait to try all that this menu had to offer!

Friendly Assistant Restaurant Manager, Jasmin, suggested starting with the flatbreads, followed by a few Chestnut Specials, rounding it off with sandwiches and croissants. It sounded like a

solid plan and we didn't need any further encouragement. The flatbreads arrived first, sliced into sharable portions by our lovely server, Martha. Keeping things classic, we started with Catchup – margherita sauce, mozzarella fior de latte and basil. Executed to perfection, the crust had a light, fluffy edge with a thinner centre that held its crispy structure without going soggy. If I closed my eyes, it tasted exactly like a pizza, which is never a bad thing. The Zaatar Stracciatella was a first for me, and I was pleasantly surprised with this Mediterranean fusion – the creaminess of the cheese paired beautifully with the earthy, herbaceous za’atar, the tomato salsa adding a slight tanginess.

The Lahm Bil Ajin brought a more regional taste to the table.

The lamb and beef mixture was soft and tender, with a hint of sweetness from the sherry balsamic reduction. Herb tahina gave it a familiar Arabic flavour, while pine nuts added a lovely texture. On the side, the jalapeño chutney quietly stole the show for me – with just the right amount of kick, it was the perfect accompaniment and ended up making its way onto the other flatbreads as well!

From there, we moved on to the Chestnut Specials. The Ricotta Zereshk looked simple, but there was more going on, and it took me a few bites to figure out all the subtle flavours at play.

The generous pile of creamy feta ricotta mix, topped with thin ribbons of pickled cucumber, along with za’atar and sumac, all came together beautifully on white sourdough. But my favourite part was the garnish of dried Persian barberries (zereshk), which added a lovely burst of tartness.

The Poundcake French Toast soon followed. While not as airy as a traditional French toast, this poundcake version was just

as delicious. A dense and rich piece of cake with a golden, caramelised top sat on an island of light crème anglaise, while a dollop of mixed berries coulis was exactly what was needed to cut through the richness of the dish.

Next up were the sandwiches, starting with the Pastrami Sandwich. The white sourdough was buttery and crispy and filled with a generous amount of house-made pastrami with onion sherry jam and sauerkraut. The tang from the pickled elements added a zesty sour touch, making it feel balanced rather than heavy. A nice, healthy lunch option. The Pastrami Bagel offered a slight variation on the same idea. The white sesame bagel brought a denser, chewier texture, while a house honey mustard added a lovely sweet and savoury flavour (with a hint of spiciness) that paired deliciously with the smokiness of the meat.

For something lighter, the Bresaola Manouri Pocket Pastry arrived in a small brown paper bag, a fun touch that makes it an easy on-the-go snack. The pastry was flaky on the outside with a soft, fluffy centre, while the filling was subtle but flavourful –the saltiness of the cheese and mild depth of the meat coming through without overpowering it.

By this point, it felt right to turn to what Chestnut is best known for – croissants! Spanakopita was first up. I love this popular Greek savoury pie but I’ve never had it in a croissant form before – it didn’t disappoint. The buttery pastry cocooned the classic soft spinach and feta cheese filling, keeping the essence of the original dish while adding that crisp, flaky texture that only a croissant can bring. Then came my favourite – the Salted Caramel Pecan croissant. As soon as I cut into this twice baked croissant, the buttery layers of pastry revealed sheets smothered with salted caramel and a thick filling of chocolate in the middle. Generously topped and loaded with pecan nuts, it delivered a satisfying crunch and instantly brought a smile to my face – absolutely delicious and best enjoyed with a hot cup of coffee. A fitting end to a lovely afternoon. Settling into Bahrain’s café scene with confidence, Chestnut Bakery offers everything a good café should – a cosy ambience, great coffee and cakes to die for (or a very good croissant, in this case)! CHINESE ELEGANCE AND OPEN SKIES

Amira Ragab finds culinary harmony at China Garden’s Al Liwan sanctuary.

There is a specific ‘breathy’ quality to the perfect weather that I had been waiting to enjoy – the kind of evening that demands to be spent outdoors. As a dedicated enthusiast with a permanent soft spot for the complexities of Chinese cuisine, my mind was fixated on a singular craving: the iconic hot and sour soup. In Bahrain, few do it better than China Garden, and to truly embrace the season, I turned to their Al Liwan location to take advantage of its stunning outdoor area.

I gathered my friends for an evening out and naturally, there was no resistance. China Garden has earnt its reputation through unwavering consistency and a menu of genuinely delicious offerings. While I am a regular, this was my first dinner visit to the Al Liwan branch; I was instantly captivated by the evening breeze and the exceptionally warm reception from the hosting team.

We were offered the choice between the chic interior or the outdoors, and we stayed true to our mission, opting for the open air. Our host for the evening, Sandhya, navigated us through the menu with the poise and intentionality of a true professional. Before the menus were even closed, I placed an order for the Hot & Sour Prawn soup – requesting it with an extra kick of spice. It arrived steaming hot and, against the cool night air, it felt like a culinary embrace. The bowl was a masterclass in balance: the chewiness of shiitake mushrooms, the soft crunch of prawns and carrots, the delicate sweetness of cabbage and the silkiness of tofu and egg – all heightened by the aromatic brightness of coriander. It was a literal party for the taste buds.

Having satisfied that initial, urgent craving, the pace of the evening slowed into a more rhythmic, intentional dining experience. The appetisers appeared with impressive timing, each dish serving as a testament to the kitchen's precision. The Vegetable Spring Rolls were an immediate highlight – generous in portion, golden-crisp and remarkably light without a trace of oiliness. They were filled with a vibrant, flavourful medley of spring onions and cabbage that provided a satisfying snap with every bite.

Next came the Pan-Seared Beef Dumplings, expertly seasoned with ginger and soy. They offered a savoury, succulent bite, with the searing process adding a delightful textural contrast to the tender dough. However, I must confess, my heart was stolen by the Chicken Shao Mai –plump, perfectly steamed parcels of ground chicken and ginger that were simply irresistible. To round out the starters, the Shrimp Toast, encrusted in sesame seeds and fried to a perfect golden hue, was a lavish and fulfilling delight. For the main course, I opted for a perennial favourite: the Sweet and Sour Prawns. Accompanied by a colourful array of red and yellow bell peppers and fresh pineapple, it is a classic dish that is often imitated but rarely executed with such finesse. The balance of acidity and sweetness was impeccable, never cloying and when paired with the vegetable noodles, it was quite simply a match made in heaven.

The ‘foodie bear’ in me – that inner voice that craves the most celebrated of traditional dishes – could not overlook the Peking Duck. This is a dish that requires a certain level of theatre, and China Garden delivers. The roast duck, featuring impeccably

rendered, crispy skin and tender, succulent meat, was served with traditional thin pancakes, a rich hoisin sauce and precisely julienned leek and cucumber. The act of assembling the rolls became a shared joy at our table, a tactile experience that brought us all together as we experimented with the perfect ratio of sauce to skin and meat.

One of my companions chose the Black Pepper Beef, served on a dramatic sizzling plate that turned heads as it travelled across the terrace. The beef tenderloin was remarkably succulent, tossed in a bold, peppery glaze with baby corn, broccoli and mixed bell peppers. He paired it with steamed rice topped with a generous amount of aromatic fried garlic – a combination that proved to be a masterstroke of flavour pairing, adding a layer of crunch and pungent warmth to the dish.

Despite our indulgence, we couldn't resist ordering Toffee Banana with Vanilla Ice Cream for a sweet end to the night. The tempurafried banana, glazed in caramel, was faultless – balanced and not overly sweet. The high-quality vanilla ice cream provided a cool, creamy counterpoint that served as the perfect finale.

We concluded the evening by lingering long after the plates were cleared, enjoying authentic Chinese tea served in a glass

pot with traditional pottery mugs. As we cradled the warm cups, we found ourselves losing track of time, gazing at the restaurant's interior details visible through the glass. Most notably, we were drawn to the magnificent, hand-painted mural of a lady that graces the inner walls. The detail is breathtaking; even from our vantage point, one could almost feel the weight of her gaze and the texture of the ink on the wall. It is a piece that commands the room – a silent, beautiful witness to a night defined by exceptional hospitality.

Ultimately, China Garden at Al Liwan offers more than just a meal; it offers a transition into a world of refined flavours and tranquil aesthetics. As we finally stepped back out into the night, we left with the kind of profound satisfaction that only comes when the weather, the company and the cuisine align in perfect harmony. It was, quite simply, an evening to remember. ✤

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Getting away from the tourists takes a bit more effort lately. It seems every ‘hidden gem’ is quickly tagged, captioned and overrun within a season. Yet some places still fly entirely under the radar – the ones you hear about from an adventurous friend or a back-packing cousin returning from a gap year.

This month’s travel mood is about going slightly off-route, stepping away from the usual spots and choosing less obvious destinations. So, get exploring before the cat’s out of the bag!

FAROE ISLANDS

Floating somewhere between Iceland and Norway, the Faroe Islands (a territory of Denmark) look like something out of a fantasy world. Its 18 volcanic islands rise sharply out of the North Atlantic – steep basalt cliffs and rolling green hills stitched together by undersea tunnels, ferries and winding roads that seem to disappear into the mist. The weather here dictates absolutely everything – one moment it’s pouring, the next it’s clear sunshine with views for miles. It sounds inconvenient and plans may need to change without warning, but it gives the place its charm, so go with the flow.

Tórshavn, one of the smallest capitals in the world with around 14,000 residents, is easy to get a feel for in under an hour. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to cosy cottages and boutique hotels overlooking the sea. Wander the old quarter of Tinganes, its colourful wooden buildings with grass roofs jutting into the harbour, then stop to sample traditional Faroese fermented lamb (skerpikjøt) and aged fish.

The real draw, though, is the fairytale landscape, with its wide-open, end-of-the-world feel. Hike the bird cliffs at Vestmanna, visit the iconic Múlafossur Waterfall and the famous 'lake above the ocean' at Sørvágsvatn or take a boat to witness one of the biggest bird colonies on Mykines, where puffins outnumber people by a considerable margin. There’s not much in the way of attractions and getting here takes a little effort (a connection through Copenhagen or Reykjavik, usually), but to witness one of the most breathtaking edges of the world, it’s worth it for those willing to make the journey.

ALBANIA

The Balkans' overlooked corner, Albania is one of the most stunning yet underrated destinations in Southeast Europe. The coastline rivals parts of Greece or Croatia and its mountains are a trekker’s dream – yet outside a few summer hotspots, it hasn’t been fully claimed by mass tourism yet. Tirana, the capital, is the obvious starting point. Busy, quirky and full of colour in unexpected places, you'll find street art murals brightening communist-era buildings, Cold War relics like the refurbished Bunk'Art museums and formerly off-limits zones like Blloku now buzzing with trendy cafés, restaurants and galleries.

To the north, the Accursed Mountains (or Albanian Alps) are considered one of Europe's last unspoilt wildernesses. The traverse between Valbona and Theth – a full day's hike through rugged valleys, remote villages and pine forests –has become the stuff of serious trekkers' bucket lists. In the southwest, the stunning Albanian Riviera stretches along the Ionian Sea, with Dhërmi, Himarë and Ksamil offering clear, turquoise water and postcard-worthy beaches without the typical Mediterranean crowds.

Further inland, Albania’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical cities are both worth the detour – Berat with its hillside maze of white Ottoman houses, and Gjirokastër’s limestone streets and brooding 12th-century fortress. Don't leave without exploring the Old Bazaar’s traditional artisan shops, carpets and local eateries. The food is influenced by Italy and Greece, so expect grilled meat, fresh vegetables, plenty of olive oil and outstanding gelato!

It's rare to find a country that delivers this much and still feels like a hidden gem. Visit before everyone else catches on.

KAZAKHSTAN

Kazakhstan rarely shows up on travel lists, which is surprising once you see it. The ninth largest country on earth is vast with landscapes that shift dramatically from steppe to canyon to mountain.

In the north, the ultramodern capital Astana dazzles with its futuristic architecture contrasting with the barren plains, but the soul of the country lies further south in Almaty – City of Apples. The country's cultural hub, it's a cosmopolitan city with leafy avenues, a vibrant art scene and a backdrop of Tian Shan's snow-capped peaks that never leave your line of sight. Coffee culture is big here, with excellent cafés pouring flat whites on almost every corner. The streets around the all-wood Ascension Cathedral offer excellent people-watching, and the Green Bazaar is a sensory experience of dried fruit, kumis (fermented mare's milk) and kazy (smoked horse meat sausage).

For a taste of the stunning landscape, take a cable car from the city centre to Kok Tobe Hill for its panoramic views and the Big Almaty Lake – a high-altitude alpine reservoir so picture-perfect it looks like a desktop wallpaper come to life. With so much to see, don’t miss the Charyn Canyon's rust red rock formations (often seen as a smaller Grand Canyon) and the breathtaking views at Kolsai Lakes National

Park – impossibly still water reflecting the surrounding forests. Further west, the Mangystau region's surreal white limestone cliffs and dry seabeds feel otherworldly.

Driving across the steppe is almost hypnotic, with little to interrupt the horizon except the occasional herd of horses or a traditional yurt camp – where you can stay for a glimpse into nomadic life, enjoying simple meals of beshbarmak (boiled meat over noodles) and plenty of tea.

Kazakhstan isn’t designed for quick visits. You have to cover some ground to understand it, so take your time – it’ll be worth the while.

SUMBA, INDONESIA

Indonesia has no shortage of islands, but where Bali gets all the attention for its high-end resorts and party scene, Sumba stands out for what it doesn’t have. No crowds, no beach clubs, just untouched, raw beauty.

The landscape has a dramatic untamed quality: sweeping savannahs, rolling hills, breathtaking waterfalls and deserted white sand beaches facing the wild Indian Ocean. Surfing has started to bring more attention to Sumba, especially along the western coast around spots like Nihiwatu, but it’s still relatively low-key. You can spend hours moving from one beach to another and pass only a handful of people.

Weekuri Lagoon is worth a visit – a calm saltwater pool separated from the sea by coral rocks that shifts between shades of blue and green as the light changes. Not far from there you'll find Mandorak Beach, a pretty little cove with clear turquoise water hidden between striking cliffs. Then there’s Walakiri Beach, known for its mangrove trees that create unusual shapes against the sunset – definitely one for the Insta reels!

Sumba is closely tied to its traditions and villages still follow customs that go back generations. The Uma Mbatangu houses are built with tall, pointed thatch and bamboo roofs, and megalithic stone tombs sit in the centre of communities. Getting around takes a bit of patience. Roads are narrow and winding and most travellers hire a driver and local guide. Accommodation ranges from bare-bones guesthouses to a few higher-end eco lodges, though even those keep things understated.

Sumba isn't trying to compete with anywhere else – it’s honest, unspoilt and totally magical! ✤

THE THREAD ARCHITECT

Bahraini artist and Creative Director of Thread Architect Studio, Engineer Marwa Ali Ahmed, brings heritage to life by weaving a rich tapestry of culture with unique embroidered pieces.
Apple Sharma chats with the textile artist about her craft, her distinctive artistic style and one of her biggest achievements of being recognised by the UN.

fact: A move from architecture into textile art isn’t the most conventional switch. How did your creative journey begin?

MA: It was never truly a switch; it was a synthesis. I have been materialising memory through multi-disciplinary art since I was 10 years old. Architecture taught me structural discipline, spatial weight and the importance of foundations. Today, at Thread Architect Studio, I apply those exact engineering principles on a micro-scale. Instead of concrete and steel, I use precious metals and structural embroidery to build tactile narratives. Textile art is simply another form of architecture – one that allows me to intimately construct and archive physical history.

fact: How would you describe your work and artistic style?

MA: I create contemporary conceptual art that deconstructs the boundaries between rigid engineering and intricate craftsmanship. My style is deeply structural and narrative driven. I do not just embroider; I engineer physical archives of spatial memory and regional heritage. My work is defined by high-end, tactile precision, blending photorealism with architectural geometry. By treating textiles and beads as structural materials, I aim to elevate the medium from traditional practices into prestigious, investmenttier fine art that commands the space it inhabits.

fact: Your pieces include everything from beaded brooches to embroidered shoes. What materials do you use and what do you enjoy making the most?

MA: My material palette is strictly premium. I engineer my pieces using 14-carat gold-plated elements, Japanese glass beads,

precious metal finishes and Danat-certified gemstones. While I appreciate the wearable architecture of bespoke brooches, I am most fulfilled by creating large-scale, conceptual wall art. These expansive, structural pieces allow me to fully map out deep cultural narratives and push the absolute limits of photorealism and spatial geometry. They transform from mere objects into commanding, heirloom-quality focal points for private collections.

fact: You were the first Bahraini textile artist to be recognised by UN ESCWA (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia) in 2023. What did that moment mean to you?

MA: That recognition was a profound validation for the medium itself. It proved that textile art, executed with structural discipline, holds immense international weight. Personally, it cemented the ‘Thread Architect’ vision globally. It shattered the perception of embroidery as a quiet domestic pastime, elevating it to a recognised voice for documenting collective spatial memory on an institutional level. Today, that milestone has evolved into an active collaboration with ESCWA's Arab Creative Market, securing this medium’s place at the forefront of our regional narrative.

fact: Your latest collection feels deeply rooted in heritage. Can you tell us more about it and how the creative process came together?

MA: My concept of heritage has no geographical limits. While my ‘Memory of a Door’ series translates the heavy architectural history of the Gulf into structural embroidery, I have also spent

the last five years deeply archiving Palestinian heritage. For me, heritage is about spatial memory and cultural resilience across the Arab world. The process begins with rigorous architectural drafting, isolating geometric and cultural motifs from Muharraq to Jerusalem. I then physically rebuild those elements using high-tensile transparent filaments, archiving our collective, interconnected history into permanent, tangible heirlooms.

fact: Do you have a favourite piece that you’re most proud of and why?

MA: My Royal Portrait study [a structural homage to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa], The Covenant, holds a distinct level of prestige within my body of work. It was an incredibly demanding exercise in structural photorealism. Translating human expression, dignity and exact likeness entirely through micro-beading requires an uncompromising level of geometric precision. Achieving that museum-tier accuracy without relying on paint or traditional mediums is a technical milestone I am immensely proud of. It perfectly represents the absolute highest standard of craftsmanship I demand from my studio.

fact: What’s the most time you’ve spent on a single piece? Tell us about it and what inspired it?

MA: To date, my most demanding piece was a large-scale anatomical study of a crab during my structural exploration phase, taking five months to engineer. Before focussing entirely

on regional heritage, I needed to master complex, threedimensional construction. I was inspired by the crab’s natural exoskeleton – pure biological architecture. Translating its heavy armour and intricate joints into tactile embroidery was an unrelenting endurance test. That five-month exploration pushed my physical limits and perfected the uncompromising techniques I now use to archive our cultural memory.

fact: Do you have any new projects in the works that you’re especially excited about?

MA: My studio is currently operating on multiple fronts, driven by the philosophy that my art transcends physical borders. I am actively expanding my international footprint, quietly managing private fine art acquisitions for collectors across the Gulf and South Asia. Simultaneously, I have just completed the final structural stitches on a highly detailed, bespoke commission exclusively for the private collection of a prominent regional media figure. Ultimately, my primary focus moving forward is not just expanding my own studio but pioneering a wider movement that permanently elevates structural textiles into the highest tiers of contemporary fine art. ✤

TIMELESS AND ELEGANT

A.Lange&SöhnepresentstheSAXONIAANNUALCALENDAR, astylishcompanionforanyoccasion.

With its new self-winding movement, compact case dimensions and a timeless, elegant design, this new timepiece is available in white and pink gold, with a focus on superb legibility. The most important information – time and date – can be easily perceived at first glance. The auxiliary dial at nine o’clock displays the day of the week, and its counterpart on the right-hand side shows the current month. Framed by the seconds display at six o’clock, the Earth’s companion moves across a star-spangled nocturnal sky. The precision of the moon-phase display is exemplary, only needing correction by one day after 122.6 years. The lunar disc in 750 gold is treated with a deep-blue coating process and with the 428 stars, a miniaturised image of the Milky Way is produced. The calendar display is programmed to advance correctly at the transition from the last day of each month to the first day of the next, needing adjustment only once a year: from February 28 ‒ or in a leap year from February 29 ‒ to the first day of March. A new self-winding manufacture movement breathes life into

FINDING YOUR JOY

CRASHING INTO THE FUTURE

EachyearthewatchmakersatCartierPrivéproducetheirOpus collectionandforits10theditiontheyarecelebratingtheCrash Squelette, among a trio ofemblematic shapes that paytribute toplatinum, themaison’ssignaturematerial.

Created in 1967 in the heart of Swinging London, the unisex Crash watch beats to the same rhythm that animated the city at that time. With its asymmetrical dial, it revolutionised the aesthetic codes of watchmaking. Since its introduction, this watch has always been produced as part of very exclusive series.

This unprecedented design has now been reworked with a new skeleton shape. The Manufacture 1967 MC movement with manual winding has been specially developed to harmonise with the singular lines of this all-new aesthetic, such that all 142 of its components can be housed in the smallest space possible. With this watch, everything goes one step further, and as such the moving parts of the movement become one with the bridges. The distortion appears accentuated, as if the crown has dragged the movement down.

With bridges shaped like Roman numerals, the technique used and finishes presented reflect the maison's watchmaking excellence. This movement construction, a Cartier signature, has been patented. The bridges on the mechanism have been entirely hammered by hand, using a traditional decorating technique requiring almost two hours of high-precision work

A TIMELY ANNIVERSARY

Swiss house Chopard celebrates 30 years of its Fleurier Manufacture with the launch of L.U.C 1860.

The Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier was founded in 1996 on the initiative of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard. For this year’s exhibition, the watchmaker revisited one of its most defining creations with a refined continuation of the L.U.C 1860.

More than a simple anniversary piece, this new edition reflects both continuity and evolution, preserving the aesthetic codes that made the original iconic while incorporating the technical advancements achieved over the past 30 years. The watch retains its elegantly restrained 36.5mm case and is crafted from Chopard’s proprietary Lucent Steel, offering both durability and a distinctive luminous quality. Its dial, presented in a striking Areuse Blue, draws inspiration from the nearby Areuse River in Switzerland’s Val-de-Travers.

The 18-carat white gold dial is hand-guilloché using a traditional lathe operated by in-house artisans. A sunburst pattern radiates outward, complemented by additional guilloché rings that structure the display. A satin-brushed chapter ring frames polished white gold chevron-shaped hour markers, while Dauphine hands ensure legibility and elegance. At six o’clock, a small seconds subdial maintains the symmetry of the design, notably omitting a date window to preserve visual purity. Inside, the timepiece is powered by the L.U.C Calibre 96.40-L, an

ultra-thin automatic movement measuring 3.30mm thick. This calibre is a direct evolution of the first movement conceived and produced by Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier in 1996. Equipped with a 22-carat gold micro-rotor, it efficiently winds a twin-barrel system, Chopard’s Twin technology, delivering a 65-hour power reserve.

THE SECRETS OF TIME

Hermès unveiled the Mysterious Mechanisms collection, drawingtheeyetothesecretswithinitstimepieces.

In each watch, fine openings provide a display in which each gear plays a role in a miniature mise-en-scène where function converses with aesthetics. The art of skeletonisation becomes a language in its own right, finding a new expression in the Arceau Samarcande watch. Recalling the maison’s origins, the horse permeates the Arceau Samarcande. The round case, in 750 white gold, gem-set 750 white gold or gem-set 750 5N rose gold, is 38mm in diameter with stirrup-inspired asymmetrical lugs. Time rings out beneath a Saint-Louis crystal dial openworked to form a horse’s head. The crown appears at three o’clock and each piece is engraved with an H. The cutout reveals the new H1927 skeletonised mechanical self-winding movement featuring a custom-made calibre designed and produced exclusively for Hermès.

Under the starry eye of the horse, a game of hide-and-seek leaves room for the imagination, while the sapphire crystal caseback enables the wearer to admire the movement details along with the minute repeater hammers and the micro-rotor, finely adorned with the Duc Attelé motif. The dial comes in either Saint-Louis blue or Saint-Louis white crystal with the horse’s head in either sapphire crystal or diamond-set and rhodium-plated sapphire crystal. The

INNOVATION TEMPERED BY TRADITION

With the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 in titanium, Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen introduces its lightesttimepieceinthisline.

In the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 (Ref. IW344904) in titanium, the house achieves the perfect balance between past creations and contemporary accents. The 41mm case and integrated bracelet are crafted entirely from grade 5 titanium, a material prized for its unique combination of strength, corrosion resistance and featherlight feel. Roughly 45% lighter than steel, the material makes this the lightest Perpetual Calendar watch in IWC’s lineup. Inspired by an original design by Gérald Genta, the round bezel, secured by five functional screws, anchors the piece, while the integrated bracelet flows seamlessly from the case via its middle links, ensuring ergonomic comfort and visual continuity. On the finishing, sandblasted planes meet polished edges and satin-finished sides accentuate the geometry. The dial continues this theme of understated sophistication. Rendered in matte grey to match the titanium exterior, it achieves a monolithic effect as if the entire watch were sculpted from a single block of metal. The hallmark Grid structure adds depth and texture. The subdials displaying calendar information are given a circular satin finish and feature a refined azurage along their edges. In the subdial at six o’clock, the single moon disc boasts a detailed azurage background. Both the applied

Arabic numerals are either rhodium-plated or rendered in 5N rose-gilt and the hours studs come in the same materials. Straps match the colours of the watch. The pieces are 28mm in diameter and 4.95mm thick. The 3Hz movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and the timekeeper has a 48-hour power reserve.

metal markers and the hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility.

Powering the watch is the IWC-manufactured 82600 calibre, visible through the sapphire caseback. It is equipped with the brand’s signature Pellaton winding system and enhanced with durable ceramic components.

A FULLY REDESIGNED COLLECTION

Oris revives the Artelier line of urban dress watches with a fully redesigned collection, including the new Artelier Date 38.00mm.

The Artelier line features hallmarks including a taut, modern case, a simple, uncluttered dial and a utilitarian new bracelet design. The dial is available in dark blue, white and chocolate black. It reflects a shift towards simplicity and versatility, suited to modern lifestyles while remaining rooted in classic watchmaking codes.

The Artelier collection was led by 24-year-old designer Lena Huwiler, who set out to create a striking yet universal watch design for her generation. Her vision was to craft a piece that could be enjoyed by those passionate about industrial design, ergonomics, aesthetics and the timeless value of high-quality Swiss Made mechanical watches. That vision is most clearly expressed in the Artelier Date 38.00 mm, which serves as the entry point to the new collection, powered by an automatic mechanical movement, Oris Calibre 733. The signature Oris Red Rotor is visible through the transparent caseback. With the return of the Artelier line, Oris reintroduces its vision of an urban dress watch design for today’s generation. The multi-piece stainless steel case has a 38mm diameter with a thickness of 10.9mm and the top glass sapphire crystal is domed on both sides with an anti-reflective coating. The

A CONTEMPORARY ICON REBORN

More than half a century after its debut, the celebrated TAG Heuer Monaco enters its next chapter with a new, more ergonomic design, now powered by the in-house automatic Calibre TH20-11.

TAG Heuer redefines the 1969 square icon with an entirely new case design, drawing inspiration from the original reference 1133 launched more than 50 years ago.

A redesign introduced in 1997 was, in many ways, an abstraction of the original TAG Heuer Monaco. Only a few elements were carried over, but the 2026 iteration returns to the original.

The sharp, angular edges have been reinforced. The sapphire crystal is now closer to a true square in form, while the 39mm case, now crafted in grade 5 titanium, extends with gently curved sides. The caseback is a masterclass in ergonomics. A smaller round central section curves toward the edges, echoing a design feature of the original.

The dial has also been refined and elevated. Typography and text placement ensure absolute legibility, while the contrasting subdials and a combination of finishes introduce depth and character.

Presented in three colourways, the collection includes the signature TAG Heuer Monaco blue, directly inspired by the watch famously worn by Steve McQueen in his 1971 film Le Mans . A refined sunray-brushed and lacquered dark green version draws on the codes of classic British Racing Green.

functions are date and stop seconds and the automatic winding provides a power reserve of 41 hours. Hands are coated in Super-LumiNova for visibility and the strap is available in either dark brown leather with a butterfly clasp or a multi-piece stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp.

Finally, an elegant black model is housed in a two-tone case of grade 5 titanium and 18-carat 5N rose gold.

At the heart of the watch lies one of the most significant upgrades, the new in-house Calibre TH20-11. Based on the manufacturer’s automatic Caliber TH20-00, it has an 80-hour power reserve and a five-year warranty.

What We’re (Still) Talking About?

Lego Lifter

Various news outlets have reported the case of 28-year-old Jarrelle Augustine who’s been accused of targeting Target in a cunning scheme. It seems the sneaky alleged thief was returning Lego sets to get refunds – but swapping sometimes valuable figures for pasta.

Police in Irvine, California, shared the story in a pun-filled Facebook post announcing an arrest with the words: “If your master plan involves swapping Legos for linguine, we can promise your plan will be cooked al dente.”

Following an investigation that began last December, retailer Target told police there were at least 70 thefts across the US potentially tied to the suspect, totalling a whopping USD34,000!

This leaves us with questions. Firstly, how come nobody noticed at handover? Secondly, we’re told Jarrelle is from California, but surely they mean Florida? And, thirdly, is there any connection to the guys knocking out the hilarious online Lego videos?

Happy Hippos

We’ve all heard the stories of drugs kingpin Pablo Escobar’s hippos, right? For those who’re not in the know, the creatures, nicknamed ‘cocaine hippos’ (due to their owner’s profession, rather than their own proclivities) are an invasive population of between 150 and 200 hippopotamuses in Colombia, descendants of four animals imported for Escobar’s private zoo in the 1980s.

After his death, they apparently thrived in the Magdalena River with their numbers multiplying until they

were destroying local ecosystems and threatening public safety. After failed attempts at sterilisation and contraception, alarmed Colombian authorities planned a cull to prevent further population growth and it seemed the hippos’ days were numbered. But now, in happy news for the hippos, Anant Ambani, the son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has offered to relocate 80 of the creatures to a sanctuary where they’ll live out their days peacefully. Hippo, hippo, hurray.

(Not So) Snap Happy

There are plenty of tales of people hurting, and even killing, themselves while taking selfies but a recent report out of South Korea takes the biscuit. Following a long investigation, authorities have revealed that two F-15 fighter jets were involved in a mid-air collision because the pilots were taking photos and videos! The incident took place when the jets were on a non-combat mission and the pilot of the second jet began to shoot photos to commemorate his last flight. Seeing what was going on, the pilot of the lead aircraft told a fellow pilot to film a commemorative

video and the second plane flipped on its back to offer a better angle.

As a result, the two jets ended up dangerously close together and, in taking evasive action, managed to collide, causing almost USD600,000 of damage. The tale is wild enough to start with but, consider this, it seems the practice was quite common and has only come to light because one of the pilots challenged a fine imposed over the damage! He’s apparently left the air force and is now flying commercially. Not sure we’d want to be his passenger!
