We also got an authentic taste of Thailand at Samui restaurant (p56), where this popular cuisine went down very well indeed. In our interviews, Chef Brian Becher (p54), who’s in charge of the Wolfgang Puck restaurants, told us all about working for free! ocated right opposite the flowing waters of Water Garden City, Elara Café has just reopened with one of the most beautiful floral arrangements you’re likely to come across. The ceiling has been decorated with the rosiest full-blown pink flowers and the entire aesthetic of the café is elegant, classy, and full of light. OUT OF THE BOX What’s behind A Box of Goodness? Started by Sri Lankan Malay, Miranthi (Miro) Dole, in October 2016, the organisation began as a simple exercise to create the habit of giving. People were encouraged to use a box and keep adding one item to it daily; so, at the end of a month, they had a box of goodness to donate to someone in need. The initiative has grown in leaps and bounds and helps various local charities such as Al Sanabel Orphan Care Society and Bahrain Association for the Parents & Friends of the Disabled. Since the onset of the pandemic, with many businesses shut down and workers left without income, A Box of Goodness has been carrying out a Food Drive to help those affected, as much as possible. Miro says: “Currently we are collecting dry non-perishable food items for our annual Ramadan Food Drive. The food collected will be shared with needy local and expat families and individuals observing the fast, during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The food items can be dropped off to our collection point in Sanabis and the food is then packaged into larger boxes depending on the size of 10

A Box of Goodness is also currently distributing Mum & Baby Essentials packages for first-time mums in the Kingdom. These include essentials such as nursing bras and pads and baby items, including newborn diapers, infant formula, milk bottles, clothing, wet wipes and swaddle cloths. The aim is to ease the hardships of parents going through financial difficulties. ✤

ARTIST GOES INTERNATIONAL Salman Al Najem’s Mihrab paintings wrap up Ramadan with Khaleeji satire. The UAE’s grassroots art platform Engage101 is holding a Ramadan showcase featuring Bahraini artist Salman Al Najem – its first outside the Emirates. A self-labeled ‘creative force’, Salman presents his painted series Mihrab, speaking to iconography, representation and worship in the region. Content-wise, Al Najem’s digital artist profile will be developed by Bahraini cultural pioneer Latifa Al Khalifa with curatorial input from Gaith Abdulla and Munira Al Sayegh, founders of Engage101. Public programmes include a critique session, and fervent discussion series about worship practices across the region. Mihrab by Salman Al Najem is on view and available for inquiries until May 11 via www.101.art . After eight active months, the Gulf-centric Engage 101 is branching out and the much anticipated expansion is not short of characters. In the 25plus works presented, Salman intentionally places “unconventional characters” in the sacred setting of the mihrab [prayer wall for the Imam, facing Mecca]. “The work is about the Mihrab, the Mihrab is in the mosque, and Ramadan is when mosques are the most full,” he notes. To close off a season devoted to worship, the artist teams up with Latifa Al Khalifa, founder of Too Far. Together they unearth what she coins ‘the Gulf Gaze’ - the invisible sum of forces shaping collective livelihood in the region. 22

fact magazine

The artworks on view and for sale are spray-painted, a fluid approach towards exploring what Salman calls “the social application of religion”. The paintings are, for the most part, made out of spray mist and ‘shapeshifting’ smoke, according to Latifa. ‘Khaleeji satire’ is at the heart of the Mihrab series and the themes that it explores. When thinking about lived spirituality, Salman, himself, reflects that “worship is a gigantic word,” pointing at worship being a massive practice whose meaning often goes undiscussed. He further adds that he seeks to reconcile “expressions of the divine” with “expressions of authenticity” and believes in “an artist’s ability to document emotional aspects of time”. The artist, paraphrasing André Gide, has a message for the season: that “art is a collaboration between God and man, the less man the better.” Mihrab comes with activations through which the artist hopes to “create a space for people to feel”. Alongside the online showcase, Engage101 hosted an online launch via Youtube on May 1. A digital critique session moderated by Latifa Al Khalifa will take place on May 5, as well as other engagements on social media. ✤

THE AZORES

Flores Caldeira by Floreesha

These islands truly epitomise the ethos of a ‘hidden gem’ – ultra beautiful, not that easily accessible and miles from anywhere in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. But, honestly, if you decide to make the trip, it’s more than worth it. The Azores comprises not one but nine destinations as, though there are many similarities, each island boasts its own unique character and a wide range of things to do and see. They are an autonomous region of Portugal, which you will most likely fly through on your journey. For those who are into wildlife, they are on the North Atlantic Migratory Route for many whale species and whale watching trips are widely available with strict regulations set regarding distance and not disturbing the animals. Migratory birds are also a common sight and there is an amazing range of hiking and outdoor sporting activities across the islands where you will be exposed to plenty of nature. Waterfalls are everywhere, many of them hiding thermal pools for year-round bathing underneath, and the Atlantic waves make for great surfing. Most travellers choose to visit more than one island. Trips can be made by plane but, for the intrepid, we recommend hopping onto one of the interisland boat services. However, remember where you are, you might be in for a bumpy ride, even in summer. To help you pick your spot, here are some of our favourites. 26

fact magazine

Faial Sometimes known as the Blue Island for its abundance of hydrangeas, you will spot the distinctive pom poms of these showy flowers all over Faial, particularly along the roadsides where they reflect the colour of the sky on sunny days and brighten the landscape when the weather is not so forgiving. Visitors will be drawn to the black sand beaches of Praia de Almoxarife, Conceição and Porto Pim, as well as the rock pools scattered along the coast. Check out Varadouro, which is known for its warmer waters, micro-climate, summer cottages and complicated salt-water pools open to the ocean. Faial is also hugely popular with the international sailing crowd who for more than 100 years have congregated at the famous Peter Café Sport where you will find a warm welcome and walls bedecked with flags, lanyards and bunting gathered over the years. Also, no visit would be complete without a trip to the Caldeira do Faial, a huge volcanic crater, more than 1,000 metres high and blessed with an amazing ecosystem and steps all the way down to the bottom – but don’t forget you’ll have to climb back up.

Flores Said to be the prettiest of the islands, Flores is named for the

profusion of flowers that grace its landscape, many seeds having found their way here via birds on a migratory journey from Florida. Being a long way west in the chain means the weather on Flores is often wetter and windier than the other islands but, the rain often leaves behind a giant rainbow across the land, which is really quite something to see. It’s also a ‘must visit’ for orchid lovers though you will need to hop on a boat to, Corvo, the nearest island, to see the world’s rarest flower. The mostly deserted interior is a paradise for walkers, cyclists and horse riders; you will rarely see another soul. Make sure to take in the Ribeira Grande Wateralls, a series 20 falls closely grouped together with a bathing pool beneath. And Flores is particularly popular for the many festivals that take place throughout the year (Covid allowing), many featuring vast swathes of blooms and much religious dedication.

Pico Most notable for its volcano, Ponta da Pico, which is the highest mountain in Portugal and clearly visible from its neighbour, Faial. Pico has fertile black earth, which has led to the cultivation of its UNESCO-recognised vineyards. The island is serious about sustainable tourism and has received the QualityCoast Gold Award for its efforts, so you can visit with a clear conscience (apart from the long plane journeys, obvoiusly). While you’re there make sure to taste the local grape along with some Queijo do Pico, a cheese that is only made on the island and has a strong, salty flavour with an intense aroma. It’s utterly delicious if you like a strong cheese and a great tasting experience since you’re at the heart of the Denomination of Protected Origin which this product has enjoyed since 1996. Go underground into the lava tunnel at Gruta das Torres or grab a guide and head for the many volcanic caves. Or enjoy the very fresh air on the hiking trails, boat tours and fishing.

Ribeira Grande Waterfalls, Flores by Turismo Azores

While in the Azores, seek out the island speciality of Cozido das Furnas. It’s a stew buried in a pot underground for several hours and cooked by the heat from the volcanic rock. It takes patience but, boy is it tasty, not to mention the bragging rights because most of your friends will never have heard of it, let alone tried it.

NAMIBIA Hidde Rensink on Unsplash Etosha National Park

Finding Dan-Dan Grinwis on Unsplash

If this is country not on your bucket list, then you need to think again. Namibia simply has everything the intrepid traveller could want. And, though there is a smattering of five-star hotels and resorts, as well as some pretty colonial era buildings to see in the capital, Windhoek; let’s face it, if you’re going to Namibia, it’s all about the nature, which is stunning! Here you will find the starriest of starry skies as you study the remains of long forgotten creatures at the Mesosaurus Fossil Camp and drive among the almost other-worldly Quiver trees. Or, come a little further forward in history with a visit to the south and Twyfelfontein to discover rock paintings dating back to 26,000BC. Find endless horizons as you climb the highest sand dunes in the world which, in parts, crash down into the sea. And then there’s the wildlife. Namibia takes conservation seriously and this attitude probably explains why there are more than 200 species of mammals found in the country, including desert dwelling elephants and rhino. In fact, it’s the only country in the world where large numbers of rare and endangered wildlife are translocated from national parks to open communal land where the local people are committed to their protection and preservation. Of the many lodges to explore, we recommend Desert Rhino Camp in Damaraland – one of the very few places where you can track highly endangered black rhino ON FOOT! The guides work alongside the Save the Rhino Trust. And there’s no Wi-Fi. We can’t wait to go. 28

THE ISLES OF SCILLY

sneal snorkelling

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

If you’re a Brit and hankering for a taste of home but still want to get off the beaten track, this destination could just be the answer. For everyone else, of course you don’t have to be heading home to visit this gorgeous archipelago which sits off the coast of Cornwall, at the UK’s most southerly point. Just 2,200 people live on the five inhabited islands - St. Mary's, Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher and St. Agnes. And, if that’s not quiet enough for you, there are countless uninhabited islands to explore. The Scillies are rugged, clean and beautiful and with flower farming and lobster fishing making up much of the local economy, you’ll have an idea of the pace of life. Tresco is known as the island of luxury and, though it’s privately owned, you’re still welcome to book a stay in some seriously upmarket accommodation and take in the famous Tresco Abbey Garden which, as well as thousands of rare and exotic plants, includes The Valhalla collection, a colourful display of figureheads salvaged from the islands’ shipwrecks! St Martin’s is a beach paradise boasting miles of white sand with quaint names like Bread and Cheese Cove and you can explore the tiny islets to catch a glimpse of puffins and seal colonies not far off shore. If you want to get closer, you can actually take a diving trip to swim with them too. The biggest of the islands is St Mary’s, where most of the population lives. But don’t be put off, it’s still not exactly bustling and once you’re away from the two main settlements, you’ll find cliff paths, sandy beaches, everything you could want for a secluded break. 30

NORTHERN SRI LANKA

When most of us think of Sri Lanka, it is of the regular tourist spots of the Yalla National Park or Galle and the beaches of the south coast. But the country’s northern region is a world apart from the rest of the country – equally as beautiful but wilder, less developed and still recovering from the worst fighting of the long civil war, which only ended in 2009. To get pretty much anywhere in the north, you’ll start your journey at Jaffna, which gives an indication of why this area is so different – a strong Indian influence. From the music to the markets and even the food, you will spot it everywhere since the region has been occupied by Indian forces many times and is much closer to the mainland than the south. However, Jaffna has its own unique and complex identity shaped in true Sri Lankan fashion, by a wide cross-section of influences, including Muslim, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Sinhalese, with colourful temples set next to huge churches, and streets dotted with ancient Dutch and British residences. Get out of Jaffna and there’s loads to see and do. Head to Kalpitiya, a jump-off point to numerous offshore islands. Here you will find mangrove swamps and vast sand dunes. Take a boat trip to see pods of dolphins, up to 100-strong, leaping and dancing off the coral reef. Whales are also known in the local waters. Make sure you take a trip to Delft island for something a bit (nay, a lot) different, including wild horses. The most fabulous wildlife experience must be staying in a treehouse and watching visiting wild elephants heading to a 32

watering hole, or pinching fruit from the gardens! The Sigiri Charuka Resort comes highly recommended for an authentic experience. But, remember, these are wild animals, they have been known to trample people, so take care!

You can get to Jaffna by train. It’s a seven- to eight-hour journey and seriously scenic. There’ll be food and drink sellers on the train but it’s a good idea to take your own. And make sure you book a seat in the highest-class section you can afford as Sri Lankan trains have lots of stops and can get very crowded.

No, it’s not just a high-level outdoor clothing range. But, if you’ve heard of the brand, then you’ve probably heard of the place because, for the outdoors adventurer, this is another one with serious bragging rights. Possibly one of the last truly wild places, Patagonia is a sparsely populated region at the southern end of South America, governed by Argentina and Chile. The region comprises the southern section of the Andes Mountains, lakes, fjords, and glaciers in the west and deserts, tablelands and steppes to the east. And, while there are small cities – the largest is Neuquén, with a population below 400,000 – you will see very few people once you hit the road outside the most inhabited areas. While the region is best known for its mountains and glaciers, which every self-respecting adventure traveller will want to see, there’s much more to take in, depending on how long you have to stay. The wilds of Tierra del Fuego at the end of the continent is great if you want to take things slightly easy. Here the land, battered by the elements, crumbles into myriad rocky islands. The region is home to moss-covered forests, craggy mountains and more. Ideal for trekking, or a boat trip, it offers the chance to see pumas, penguins and whales. You can even go Glamping in heated yurts. Or head to the equally remote Aysen, with glaciers, mountains, rivers and rainforest through which you can travel on one of the world’s most stunning road trips. Or, if you’re not averse to sleeping under the stars and really getting away from it all, why not book a tailor-made trip through a company such as swoop-patagonia.com who’ll make sure you get a truly wild experience. 34

To whet your appetite for this epic adventure, try to find a copy of Bruce Chatwin’s 1977 classic In Patagonia which not only describes this faraway land beautifully but also gives a history lesson of its people and culture. More than 40 years after its publication, it’s still a fascinating read and among the great travelogues of our time.

THE ANDAMANS

Explore-the-Underwater-Beauty-of-Andaman-Islands

These islands are jewels in the Bay of Bengal that many people haven’t even heard of. That’s partly because access is strictly limited and controlled to protect the native tribespeople from diseases they will have no resistance against. So, if you want to go, you’ll need the regular Indian visa applicable to your nationality as well as a special permit that can be obtained from the Immigration Office at the airport. So, why’s it worth going? Well, as we said, there’s the fact that most of your friends will ask “Where?” added to the romance of an almost undiscovered space. Let’s face it, there aren’t too many of those around. But, seriously, you can pack several holidays into one in this destination. Because it’s a group of islands, you’ll find myriad different experiences to suit just about every taste (apart from skiing!). And, because of the area’s isolated nature, many of the natural treasures are unspoiled. Try scuba diving on one of the richest coral eco systems in the world. Go dolphin watching. Take a tour to the limestone caves or the volcano on Barren Island. Hop on a helicopter and get a bird’s eye view of some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. And don’t miss the spectacular light show at the historic Cellular Jail in Port Blair, which tells the history of the islanders’ part in the battle for Indian independence. 36

You’ll be visiting the home of the Rajan, the famous swimming elephant. Like many working elephants, he was taught to swim during his working life which involved travelling between islands, and then continued to do so, much to tourists’ delight, in his retirement. However, Rajan passed in 2016. Beware of visiting his successors. The Andamans are incredibly rich in local wildlife. If you’re going to seek an animal experience, do your homework. Make sure whatever you’re doing is ethically managed and does not involve close human contact. Worldanimalprotection.org is a good place to start.

e’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we at FACT Magazine love all things Mercedes-Benz! This globally renowned brand’s ability to produce beautifully crafted, high-performance models year after year has ensured its reputation as one of the very finest, premium motor vehicle manufacturers. Having had the privilege of test driving several Mercedes-Benz models over the past few years, including the classy AMG-GLC 43 Coupé, the compact A-Class Sedan and the 2021 GLA, we can attest to the quality of this manufacturer’s automobile offerings. This month, thanks once again to the great team at Al Haddad Motors, we received the opportunity to get behind the wheel of another beautiful Benz, this time in the form of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLB 200. Staring at the GLB head on, we were immediately struck by the aggressive appearance of the upright front end. Powerful proportions accentuate the off-road capabilities of this compact SUV as do the prominent headlamps and short overhangs at both the front and the back. The robustly contoured shoulder of the vehicle demands one’s attention when taking in the flanks and it’s obvious that ease of access is increased thanks to the doors extending over the side bar. This feature also aids in keeping soil out of the vehicle when on off-road adventures as well as increases protection for passengers in the event of a side impact. Further highlighting the off-road nature of the GLB are the allround protective claddings and simulated under-ride guard at the front and rear. Further stylish features of this vehicle include the standard 18-inch alloy wheels and elevated roof rails made of polished aluminium. If you are interested in acquiring the optional OffRoad Engineering package, additional multibeam LED headlamps, an extra drive mode as well as a special media display to judge manoeuvrability more effectively, are all included. Once inside the car, we were immediately impressed by the amount of space on offer. Available as both a five- or seven-seater, the GLB is the first compact vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to offer a third row of seating. The seats are exceptionally comfortable with both the electrically adjustable driver’s seat as well as the power front passenger seat containing memory function. The interior receives plenty of natural light thanks to the windows and panoramic sliding sunroof, illuminating the quality materials, fine craftmanship and attention to detail. There are plenty of storage compartments, cup holders and USB ports throughout as well as ample head, shoulder and leg room for all passengers. The robust character of this SUV has been integrated into the interior with the instrument panel having been constructed from a single piece with optical cut-outs in the driver and front passenger area. Aluminium looking, off-road tubular elements round off the lower section of the instrument panel which houses three round centre air vents. Underneath the vents sits the air conditioning panel whose buttons create the impression that they have been constructed from a solid aluminium cylinder. The GLB 200 comes equipped with MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). This interactive system includes as standard two seven-inch displays, one for the touchscreen media display 40

and one for the instrument cluster. The sports steering wheel houses Touch Control buttons on both sides providing the driver with easier access to the system’s features. The remarkable computer powering this setup provides exceptional screen and graphic quality, a presentation that can be personalised, a fullcolour head-up display, navigation with augmented reality, learning software and voice control. It also comes complete with smartphone integration and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Once out on the roads, it was obvious how responsive and capable this vehicle is. The GLB 200 is powered by the M 282, a four-

This SUV has a top speed of 207km/h and can accelerate from 0–100km/h in 9.1 seconds. We found the handling, cornering, braking and suspension to be excellent and thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey. The GLB can be optionally equipped with the Off-Road Engineering Package as well as with 4Matic allwheel drive, both of which add substantially to the vehicle’s already impressive capabilities. With an array of safety features and driver assistance systems, Mercedes-Benz have once again ensured a safe experience for you and your loved ones. ✤ GO: CALL AL-HADDAD MOTORS ON 1778 5454 FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO BOOK A TEST DRIVE OF YOUR OWN.

FERRARI ON FILM The first official images of Ferrari’s latest limited-edition special series have been released, prior to its world premiere on May 5. The new model is the ultimate expression of Ferrari’s concept of an extreme front-engined berlinetta, honing the characteristics of the critically-acclaimed 812 Superfast to a level never seen before. The most striking feature is the latest evolution of Maranello’s legendary 65° V12 engine, which reaches the highest output of any Ferrari road-car engine – 830cv – and revs to 9,500rpm, again the highest of any Ferrari ICE. The use of state-of-the-art materials, the redesign of many of the engine’s key components, a new valve timing mechanism and a new exhaust system are just some of the technical solutions that allow performance levels that are unprecedented in the V12 segment. The pure power unleashed by the powertrain is paired with class-leading vehicle dynamics controls to ensure that the performance can be fully exploited. Most distinctive of these solutions is the adoption of independent steering on all four wheels. Another noteworthy engineering achievement is the development work undertaken to reduce the car’s overall weight compared to the 812 Superfast. The aerodynamic redesign of the whole car was aimed at maximising downforce levels – from the new front air intakes, rear diffuser and exhaust configuration to the patented design of

the rear screen – which now hosts vortex generators. From a design point of view, this new special series has a strong personality all its own though the interior architecture reflects that of the 812 Superfast. ✤ GO: HTTPS://BAHRAIN.FERRARIDEALERS.COM

MASERATI LEVANTE HYBRID REVEALED The luxury marque embraces its ‘Faster. Greener. Unique’ ethos with a car that’s faster than a diesel and more sustainable than either diesel or gasoline. With the Brand’s first electrified SUV, which was revealed both at the Shanghai Auto Show and in a virtual launch, Maserati takes a major step forward in its strategy for electrification, which began last year with the Ghibli Hybrid. The Levante Hybrid combines the four-cylinder, 2L engine with a 48-volt hybrid system to recover energy during deceleration and braking. The hybrid car weighs less than the six-cylinder engine equivalent and has better weight distribution since the battery is placed in the rear, balancing the masses of the vehicle. Thanks to a maximum power output of 330hp and torque of 450Nm, delivered from just 2,250rpm, the performance data of the new Levante Hybrid includes a top speed of over 240km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in six seconds. In terms of appearance, the Levante Hybrid launch version is characterised by a new metallic tri-coat colour called Azzurro Astro, available as part of the brand’s customisation programme, 44

Maserati Fuoriserie. Other exterior and interior details contribute to this car’s immediately recognisable design: some are in blue, the shade chosen to identify hybrid cars. On the exterior, blue characterises the three iconic side air ducts, the brake callipers and the C-pillar logo. The same blue appears inside the car on the embroidered seat seams. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.MASERATI.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Trail Wallet

TripIt

Summer’s coming and so are our travel plans (or dreams). So, while we fill our minds with the wonders the world offers, unfortunately, we tend to empty our wallets at the same time. One of the few things we struggle with while on vacation is keeping track of expenditure, and this is where the Trail Wallet comes in handy. It is an expense travel app that has been designed specifically with the travelling type in mind. It’s easy to use, swift, and wonderfully designed. All you have to do is add your budget by trip or by month, set a daily budget, and every time you pay for something – add the figure to the app and it’ll take it away from your spending pot. Its streamlined design promises ease of use for those who want to stay focused on the sights around them rather than balancing their cheque books and keeping tabs on how much they have left to spend. You can add in any currency, have a graph to visually show your spending, and the option to export data in CSV format and send it via messages, email, or Airdrop.

Plan your trip down to a ‘T’ with all your information in one place. Now, you might wonder why you need such an app if you’re pretty good at keeping track of all your documents since most apps just record your flight tickets and keep your documents in one place. However, Triplt goes above and beyond to make your trip completely stress-free. If you suffer from travel-anxiety, it’s an absolute must. The app has additional bells and whistles like flight tracking, a navigation system, updates on time zones, and reviews on neighbourhood safety. All you have to do is forward your hotel, restaurant, flight, and car rental confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com and it automatically transfers all the material to your master itinerary, so you can easily find all your upcoming plans at once. The app does everything from sharing your updates with family and friends, scanning neighbourhood safety to airport maps, lounge maps, and baggage carousel locations. The app really does take quite a bit of the hassle out of your travel planning.

What or who inspired you to enter the hospitality industry? My mum inspired me. Back then, she was known for her excellent cooking skills and, to make ends meet, she started supplying to local restaurants and families with her ‘home food’ favourites. I always thought my mum was good enough to cook at the very best restaurants and hotels. That impression never really left my mind and so, when I finished high school, I knew what my heart desired. You started at the very bottom, washing dishes in the kitchen and then waiting tables. Please tell us about that period and how you pushed forward onto the management ladder. Indeed! I started from the very bottom and cleaning dishes was my first job. It all began on a summer vacation during my high school days, with the sole purpose of buying a bicycle. I worked in the restaurant of a private club without my mum’s knowledge. A month later, I got lucky and moved to grilling burgers. I worked every summer at the grill and when I graduated, I took the position full time to earn money while I looked for the first step on the hospitality ladder. An opening came when news broke that a luxury hotel was going to open, giving me the chance to apply for a supervisory role. I went for the interview and was told that a waiter position was available. I knew what people would say with me being a university graduate, but I said yes on the spot! That is how it started. I always had a thought towards what would be the best way to move my career faster. Then, I had the opportunity to undergo a management training programme for two years, where I experienced working in all departments, and that pushed me to my first managerial role, as a restaurant manager. Having the attitude, passion, commitment and determination, I started climbing up the management ladder.

Did you expect to reach this level, 20 years on? Yes, I did! In my 20 years in the industry, I have been working hard to reach not only this level but to go even higher. Therefore, I keep learning, enhancing my skills and developing myself towards my own self-growth. What is next for the Gulf Hotel and for you? The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention and Spa is a legendary five-star hotel in Bahrain that has maintained its reputation for many years. Once the pandemic is over, the hotel will be back to offering the largest hotel facilities, especially in food and beverage. The hotel is preparing to open all the facilities and to come back to the leading position in the market through our product quality and services. While, for myself, I am looking forward for my next role very soon. On a more personal note, what do you enjoy doing when you are not at work? Family! I love being with my family at home. We do things all together. My wife and I play with our kids, watch movies, gardening and we do many other activities indoor and outdoor. Do you have a hidden talent or passion that few people know about? Horseback riding! It is my passion. Since childhood, I have enjoyed being with horses. Riding can be exhilarating, nerve-racking and freeing all at the same time, but it makes me relax and it can be very therapeutic too. Not too long ago, I developed this passion into a sport. I am planning to participate in the next season of Bahrain Horse Endurance, and I have been practising daily every morning at 4.30am preparing the horse and myself to be qualified for the endurance rides at distances of 40km and moving forward to 80km and so on. ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Your Four Seasons bio says: “All my culinary knowledge came by way of on-the-job learning through staging, which means working unpaid for knowledge. I like to tell people that I went from high school right to the pros.” How did you actually get started, did you literally work for free? Well, my first serious kitchen job was with Wolfgang Puck (WP) Fine Dining Group at Wolfgang Puck American Grille under Chef Aram Mardigian. I was hired as a demi chef de partie in 2007. At that time, I definitely wanted to attend a culinary school, but I simply didn’t have any money for tuition. So, I started coming to work four or five hours early for my shift (this is what Chef Aram had done when he was early in his career). I did this so I could spend time with the butcher and learn from him. After that, I moved on to our baker, and so on. I then spent time in other kitchens on my off time. I would reach out to prominent chefs and volunteer my time in trade for the opportunity to learn. I staged in the kitchens of James Beard winner Jeff Michaud at Osteria, worked with Chef Robert Rottenstiener, and spent time with Susanna Foo, among many others. I think I went about 18 months without taking a day off! This mentality extended into my vacations. The Corporate Executive Chef of WP Fine Dining Group at the time, Chef Lee Hefter, organised for me to spend my holidays learning in our Los Angeles Kitchens, such as the Michelin-starred CUT and Spago in Beverly Hills, and others. This experience ingrained in me the kitchen culture of Wolfgang Puck. How did you become involved with the Wolfgang Puck operation? I was living in Northern Virginia in early 2007, working as a banquet chef in a country club but I had decided to take my culinary career seriously. Just one year prior, Wolfgang Puck (the most recognisable name in American cooking) had opened his first East Coast restaurant in the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, NJ. I reached out to the executive chef and we met to discuss a seasonal opportunity. I vividly remember Chef Aram (who became my primary mentor in my career) casually mentioning that the restaurant would serve 900 à la carte dinners on a busy night. That statistic shocked and frightened me, but I was excited to learn how to operate at a high standard under those demands. I was hired just for a seasonal summer position. However, Chef Aram said he recognised a certain level of potential within me and pulled some strings to secure me permanent employment at the restaurant. I have been with WP ever since. . How did you find coming to Bahrain and what are your favourite things about the island? When I first arrived on the Island, I really felt instantly welcomed. Constantly, I am being asked by locals “How do you find Bahrain?”. In the States, we never ask expats if they are happy in the US, because we are rude. But that is a great example of Bahrain’s hospitality. People are just so friendly here. And that would be the one thing I would highlight as my favourite facet of living here: the people.

I am constantly being invited by guests at the restaurant into their homes for lunch. This never happened to me once in the US. But it is just that island mentality. Everyone is super friendly, very welcoming, and very laid back. Even Wolfgang mentioned to me, on his most recent visit, that Bahrain is special because of the people. Please tell us about your signature dish and why it is special to you. Well, most people would think I would talk about the cheesesteak when I am asked about a signature dish. But, for me, that designation goes to our Korean Fried Chicken. We originally developed the dish to sell in the hotel rooms aiming to compete with the delivery options. Chef Josh Wetshtein and I made over 40 iterations of the batter before we were satisfied. We eventually found that to achieve the best results, we needed to toast and grind our own rice flour. We ate so much fried chicken during the development process that I didn’t eat it again for six months. And I love fried chicken! Unfortunately, the dish didn’t take off as we expected. It wasn’t until the restaurants were shut in the pandemic that it really got the recognition it deserved. We were looking for items that represented us well under delivery and takeaway conditions, the Korean Fried Chicken fit perfectly. And boom, it had everybody talking once they tried it. Now it’s available on the CUT lounge menu at all times. It has become one of the dishes I need to keep around, otherwise I think I might lose my visa! ✤ fact magazine

pon entering the restaurant, guests are transported into Koh Samui, the second-largest island of Thailand. Known for palm-fringed beaches and rainforests, the ambience and the colours of this eatery worked cohesively to make the experience as close as we could get to a realistic Thai beach experience. Situated and comfortable on the wooden seating, we were greeted and briefed on the dishes that were going to come. I put my trust in the hands of the experts, they even suggested customers should go for things that would not be their regular choices, as they will, “without a doubt, be surprised by the outcome”. Starting with soup and appetisers, I was immediately intrigued by their well-known Chicken Wonton Coconut Soup, which is made exclusively at Samui Thai. I found the combination of chicken and coconut interesting, and the rich creamy soup balanced the Thai flavours delightfully. It was served in a portion that would easily satisfy two people. Complemented by the Sesame Shrimp Toast to give the best of both worlds, the dishes really imparted that island feel, right from the start. Dressed in the perfect amount of lime sauce, the Papaya Salad with green beans and roasted peanuts as well as the Crispy Beef Salad were both refreshing and appetising – and, with the more than generous portion sizes, I was already beyond satisfied before even getting to the main courses. Having catered to my vegetarian dining companion with their famous Stir-Fried Vegetables with Thai oyster sauce, my heart and soul were in love with the main courses they served us. Not 58

only were the aromas captivatingly rich in smell, but the flavours of each particular dish stood uniquely, blowing my taste buds with the different Thai tastes, all achieved such a long way from their origin. I was particularly taken with the Thai-style wide and thick noodles and the Lad Na Shrimp, that was doused in delicious gravy sauce, was also a show-stopper, delighting my taste buds with flavours and various textures that came together in a perfect combination. With every meal, I always want to end on a sweet note. And so, I made it a note to try something different than the typical Thai dessert that most people would tend to go for. I opted for Thai Tea Crepe Cake, a delicious confection of tea crepes stacked together with fresh whipped cream in between. This is the first time I’ve come across something like this and it was wonderful. Classical and authentic in their preparation, ideal if you're looking for a meal to fulfil your Thai cravings; Samui Thai is the condensed version of being on the Koh Samui islands, but even better and with faster service! ✤

e had reached a point pre-Covid19 when competition among five-star hotels was raging hot to win the title of the most extravagant and luxurious Ramadan Tent. It was insane! Post-Covid19, the picture has changed and, to be frankly honest, I am quite happy that we were forced to drop the flashy appearances and go back to reasonable setups, effortless decoration, and to focussing on good food and warm hospitality. The Backyard at Crowne Plaza Bahrain is exemplary in this respect. We navigated our way through the beautiful lobby into La Mosaique restaurant and out to what looks like a shisha lounge. Before I descended the few steps, I took few minutes to explore the view from above. The paved area adjacent to the pool has been turned into an interesting bazaar-like food court. Wooden stalls on the edges selling Bahraini handicraft products, namely jewellery boxes, artistic mirrors, women’s accessories, traditional Bahraini dolls, printed coffee mugs… even paintings. For this Ramadan season, the hotel is celebrating Souqs of Bahrain with hints of storytellers and spice trails, hidden souvenirs and a sense of a bygone age that opens up the old Kingdom before your very eyes. A beautiful way to support the local craftspeople during the Holy Month! The tables are carefully distributed, some in the open and some under shady pool pavilions, with total respect to social distancing and a maximum of six guests per table. Over white tablecloths, the traditional red tent material makes the perfect match to the waiters’ special outfits. 62

A corner for all the Ramadan drinks of Tamarind, Qamar-Eddin, Jallab, Karkadeh, and Laban, completes the Ramadan look, and they are well prepared and tasty. On one side, whole chickens are roasting slowly next to a shawarma station, and an experienced chef brushes on the tasteful marination every now and then for maximum flavour. Food comes to you at the table like a set menu. A collection of standard cold Mezze, from Labneh, Hummus and Mutabbal to different kinds of salads, and a big plate of assorted hot appetisers, including spring rolls, and Kebbeh, in addition to mixed grill, fries, and Shawarma wraps. For the main course, we were offered Lamb Qouzi, roasted chicken and baby potatoes, vegetable Saloona, Shrimp Curry, and traditional Harees. Sugar is always in demand in Ramadan, and the ending at Crowne Plaza is as sweet as their Um Ali and the platters of mixed Arabic sweets. Your need of vitamins is also taken care of with a colorful plate of fruits, namely kiwi, pineapple, grapes, and different kinds of melon. No doubt Ramadan this year is different, and hotels and food and beverage specialists are still learning and facing renewed challenges every day. Hats off to team Crowne Plaza Bahrain for successfully overcoming these challenges day after day. If you feel like taking your small family out for Iftar in the safety of the open air, try Ramadan at the Backyard at Crowne Plaza Bahrain. ARTS & CULTURE •

A

Bahraini in her late 30s, Leena has been painting and sketching since childhood. But, with no early art education and the feeling that her style of painting might not be popular in her homeland, she was shy to put her work out there. She says: “As a child, I was always drawing and sketching [children]. If I watched TV cartoons, especially Japanese because they have very detailed faces and figures, I would copy and interpret them. “I didn’t have the chance to study art, so I had to do it all by myself from books and online. I then went on to Accademia Riaci in Florence and London Art College. I wanted a class on art history just to enhance my background. Then I had to come up with my own process.” Leena spent 12 years in the corporate world as a senior business consultant with an international financial consultancy and various banks before she quit to focus on art. It was at a cancelled exhibition that her life changed for good. “In 2014, I was due to participate in an art event in Manama – I can’t even recall the name, but it was Ministry of Culture and it was cancelled before it actually opened! Up to that point I had kept my work just for myself, I had never shown publicly. It was different to what you would normally see locally – our market, at that point, embraced a lot of abstract art and pictures of falcons! “As we were setting up [before the cancellation], I got a lot of good feedback and I actually sold six pieces before the event was cancelled. “They were old-style traditional pieces with a twist, for example Marilyn Monroe in Arabic clothes wearing a batoula [the metallic-looking mask sometimes worn by Arabic women as an accessory]. “I was also interviewed from just setting up, and it made me feel that there was potential to pursue art [as a career].” fact magazine

73

• ARTS & CULTURE Now, just over six years later, Leena has a studio at her home, a gallery, Dar Alfann, and shops in Manama and A’ali plus a shop-gallery space in Bahrain’s new airport. They carry around 600 different lines from paintings to clothing, furniture, notebooks and accessories bearing Leena’s artwork. And the airport space stocks a new line of travel inspired pieces such as suitcase covers and travel pillows. There you will also find the curated works of other Bahraini artists. Leena has also participated in lots of collaborations such as producing a limited Bahrain Starbucks cup for National Day and, most recently, an eco-friendly reusable shopping bag that can be found in Alosra Supermarkets. Post 2014, she had plenty of exposure with participation in exhibitions both in Bahrain and Dubai. She says social media makes it easier for artists to connect but adds: “I don’t feel that women in the Gulf are well represented in the art scene; when women are shown in art, I believe that they are not shown in the right way. By men and conservatives, they are confined to a certain way [portrayal]. For example, they are shown as hard working, but it doesn’t show women’s strength. “I pretty much always paint women – I do animals and other things sometimes for fun, but I enjoy the subject of women more.” None of her pieces are based on people she knows but, rather, all come out of her head with inspiration maybe coming from her childhood. “I was a very dreamy kid. I always lived in my own space. I would spend the whole holidays drawing or painting,” she says. Describing the works we’ve featured, Leena explains: “The painting with the fish and the ladies is a mix of the past and dreamscape in terms of what they’re wearing and the old houses.

74

fact magazine

“

“I don’t feel that women in the Gulf are well represented in the art scene…”

It’s a mix of so many things – childhood and dreams. “The two black haired women and the three together – they might look Egyptian in style but they’re not. The head pieces give their identity, we call it Gubgub in Bahrain [the jewelled headpiece]. It’s worn across the Gulf and is both traditional and modern. I’m trying to mix it up a bit to attract [and show] different age groups and colours. The three gold headdresses are the same as the Egyptian-looking ones.” A common theme throughout Leena’s work is fish and this is a very specific and intentional thing. “I like to add fish into my paintings,” she says. “It brings good luck and here we are islanders, so it’s very symbolic. If someone comes [to you or your home] with a big fish, there’s a big greeting because it brings big luck. A lot of people believe that a painting of fish in your living space brings good luck too, so I am often trying to incorporate that.” The big eyes pictures were created in 2017 and Leena adds: “I have progressed since then, I have adjusted things and focussed more and now it’s different each time.” She continues: “I think it [my art] has taken off because it’s totally different to what’s previously been available. People in Bahrain do love art, but they’re not fully exposed to it. Countries like Syria [pre-war] and Egypt have art museums and universities – we don’t have that here. “I’ve also seen lots of people copying my style. There was noone and now there are many – there are court cases! “I see them everywhere, it’s exciting to see that I’m inspiring people, it’s a new thing for me. I feel it’s very simple to the eyes and people can easily understand it. I get a lot of students, interviewing for final papers, from both in and outside Bahrain. It’s really nice and it makes me want to do even more and more.” For the future, Leena would like to showcase Dar Alfann, which translates as House of Art, to create shows like those you might see in New York or California. She is also planning private events, such as classes – low profile, safely distanced and very popular in the UK and US. And taking her fascination with female subjects even further, she concludes: “I want to focus on the subject of women and violence against women.” ✤

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Even though it’s based on a true story and you can discover the details with a quick Google search, this is still edge-of-the-seat stuff. The Serpent was the nickname given to Charles Sobhraj, a prolific thief and conman turned killer, who seemingly could not be caught. A master of escape and disguise, he would drug, rob and kill unsuspecting young travellers, using their passports to roam the globe as a gem dealer, leaving burnt and battered bodies in his wake. A charismatic character, he seemed to have no trouble convincing his sidekicks to do his bidding with his ‘wife’, and later co-accused, confessing that she felt powerless to deny his demands. His downfall came at the hands of a dogged, Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg, affectionately known as Cloggy, who started out searching for a missing Dutch couple and ended up virtually leading an Interpol manhunt across Europe and Asia. For the record, Knippenberg still updates his files on the case to this day.

Till We Meet Again By Nora Jones

We Are By Jon Batiste

In response to the Covid pandemic, and a nearly concert-free 2020, Nora Jones has released her first ever full-length live album. Till We Meet Again was released on April 16, by Blue Note Records and can be streamed via Spotify. We are eased into the album with the brilliantly introspective Cold Cold Heart. This is followed by the first single It Was You – which was recorded at the 2018 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California with Pete Remm on organ, Christopher Thomas on bass and Brian Blade on drums. Additional musicians featured on the album include bassist Jesse Murphy, guitarist Jesse Harris, flautist Jorge Continentino and percussionist Marcelo Costa. Further track listings include her Grammy-nominated collaboration with Mavis Staples in I’ll Be Gone and new original songs from 2020’s Pick Me Up Off The Floor. This whole album feels very deep and haunting and concludes with her almost ghostly cover of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.

Although not yet a household name, you would recognise the musician Jon Batiste for his musical contribution to the Oscar-nominated movie Soul. Batiste was born into the New Orleans backdrop, but famously credits his early musical influences as being from video game scores. This album is a representation of what that lineage is all about, him just kind of showing people that genres do not truly exist. The combination of having music that is tied to a narrative, with characters and themes, is highlighted in his new album We Are, which was released in April. In this album he explores a lot of different genres and sounds. There is also a very definite duality to the themes running through this album, with the song Adulthood balancing out Boyhood. In the song Cry, we receive a straight message – set to a very funky tune. A message about something we have all felt, especially in the past year. This kind of music, which is so intensely personal and so eclectic, breaks through the genre barriers and exists just in the space of being.

Could isolation possibly influence the behaviour of a person? Living life off the grid, learning all her life lessons from nature, a young woman becomes a suspect when a tragedy unfolds in a nearby town. Equipped with skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world – until the unthinkable happens. This is a story of innocence undone and of a small town torn and re-shaped by a crisis. Owens’ touching coming-of-age story reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, the power that nature holds over us. It’s a surprising tale of possible murder.

ashion, from the catwalk to the high street, has a habit of harking back to years gone by. And, let’s face it, who doesn’t remember their youthful days with a touch of nostalgia and perhaps just a hint of a feeling that things were better then? Designers regularly pick up on our yearning for those, seemingly, idyllic days and give us just what we want. In 2014, the ’70s were everywhere; in 2017, it was the '60s. And, thankfully skipping the ‘80s, the decade that style forgot (or perhaps ran screaming from!), this year it’s time for the ’90s to make a reappearance! High-fashion brands such as Dior and Balenciaga have been digging into their buried treasure troves. While high-street veterans have also been hard at work looking back to their own inspiration to take us forward. Admittedly, with fashion in a constant state of flux, some brands have been less than assiduous when it comes to keeping track of their company histories. But the heritage movement has excited an impetus to better chronicle and curate those personal stories. Case in point: Gant. The company, which was founded in New Haven in 1949 and is currently owned by a Swiss firm, has been slowly rebuilding its clothing archives under the direction of designer Christopher Bastin. Today that archive holds numerous examples of classic stripes and Madras shirts, checks and other original fabrics. It is a reminder of GANT’s true heritage and serves as a never-ending

source of daily inspiration. “Having a legacy is something that sets you apart and gives you authenticity and credibility. And, most importantly, it gives you a platform and security as a brand,” says Christopher. This year’s spring-summer collection is a true representation of how heritage is blended with the latest trends. GANT has reclaimed the preppy style, a look it pioneered 70 years ago. Taking inspiration from the angular, geometric shapes found in Brutalist architecture and the boldly coloured, coastalinspired garments from the brand’s archive, GANT has created a collection that reinvents the iconic preppy look from the late 1980s and 1990s for today’s streets. The result is a collection that showcases retro preppy heritage in garments that not only look good but are comfortable to wear. Think bucket hats, striped sports-inspired cardigans, checked-trenches in bold primary hues and painterly pleated skirts in bright yellow, bold red, crisp white and jet black. THE BODY SHOP

NEW &

Drops of Youth Collection You might think that working from home and staying indoors would be safe for your skin, but our complexions are still subjected to environmental aggressors, such as fine dust and smoke from cooking, as well as blue light from digital devices, which is known to contribute towards premature skin ageing. To help pamper dehydrated indoor skin The Body Shop has come up with the brand-new Bouncy Jelly Mist, which just sounds like something we’d love to put on our faces. Made with 96 per cent ingredients of natural origin, including edelweiss stem cells from the Italian Alps, you can spritz the Jelly Mist wherever and whenever to help protect, refresh and hydrate the skin for up to 24 hours. Add it into your skincare routine for protection after Drops of Youth Liquid Peel, for exfoliation, and Drops of Youth Concentrate to smooth.

VICTORIA’S SECRET Bombshell Oud Fragrance An enchanting new scent joins the award-winning Bombshell Fragrance collection this Ramadan with a deep, exotic twist of the Gulf’s signature scent, oud, at the heart of it all! The spicy pink saffron opens the fragrance with vibrance while sueded peony adds a dark varietal to the heart of the Bombshell collection’s signature flower – peony. Both do what it says on the packaging and we’re really grateful of a product that fills in brows without looking fake. Together, these are all you need for a pared back, makeup-free look.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Soap Opera

Red Alert

Just A Number

Well, if you’ve been missing a bit of drama in your life recently, the funeral of Britain’s Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, certainly provided enough to keep soap fans happy for a day or two. First there was the ‘is Harry coming and what about Meghan?’ question – very simply answered by the fact that he, of course, would come and she, heavily pregnant and probably reluctant to step into a viper’s nest, would not. And then, oh joy, the uniforms fiasco. Who even knew that senior royals continue to receive promotions long after they leave military service? Hence, Prince Andrew’s wish to attend in full admiral’s kit, despite

The scenes flashing around the world from India in recent weeks and days have been nothing short of devastating as the country battles the world’s worst Covid-19 outbreak. As infection and death rates rise at a terrifying rate, there are some who would make this a political issue. But, while there is no doubt that questions should be asked, surely right now is not the time for finger pointing but rather for action. The world watches on and pledges help, while one of its biggest vaccine producers fights, in many cases, for her very life. And yet, still big

Congratulations to Sir Anthony Hopkins on his Oscar win for The Father in which he portrays an elderly man battling dementia, alongside Olivia Colman as his loving daughter. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate this movie. It deals with a really sensitive subject, one that, while gaining wider recognition, is still very much the poor cousin in terms of medical research funding – crazy old people don’t get to vote (unless your party is into granny farming, but that’s a whole other issue) – and both victims and carers frequently suffer in silence. Director of Food and Beverage, The Art Hotel & Resort What took you into hospitality and why food and beverage (F&B)? Since my younger days I was part of the hotel life. My father, may he rest in peace, was a food and beverage director in morocco and I would spend weekends and school holidays with him at the hotel where he worked. I enjoyed my time there getting to experience hotels from a customer's point of view. Working in F&B is a significant responsibility and what you do directly affects the guest experience. I like the fact of preserving excellent levels of internal and external customer service and emphasising motivation and teamwork within my team.

What made you decide to move to Bahrain and how long have you been here? I was in Bahrain previously from 2013 to 2016 working for a five-star hotel and resort, it was an amazing and enriching experience. Bahraini people are rightly famed for their hospitality and friendliness, but Bahrain’s expat community is also probably one of the friendliest you’ll find, perhaps because it’s a small island. Also, the mix between tradition and modernity that you can see throughout Bahrain is commendable. After three years away from Bahrain, I decided to come back here with my family. My wife loves Bahrain, she and I still have our routine and friends here. We most definitely feel that we have a home away from home on this beautiful

There have been a lot of people that inspired me during my career, from whom I learned a lot and who helped me grow in the industry by believing in me and my capabilities. However, I believe that the only person who kept inspiring is the better version of me. I always challenge myself to be better, learn more, ask questions, if needed, and stay connected in order to follow new trends, which is a must in our industry. So, in a way of speaking, my future or better self is my inspiration, as I aspire to be him.
