Every year at this time, we are trying to survive the scorching heat, running from one A/C spot to another and, most of all, we are choosing to do things that will stop us from melting in the sun. Fear not. MAKE YOUR OWN ICE CREAM Take a break from the heat with a delicious ice-cold treat, home-made. It's really not hard to make a batch of rich, bend-your-spoon thick ice cream without breaking the bank. FACT’s Elanur Sengel shows you how…

All you need are… … ingredients - - - - - - -

2 cups whole milk 1 cup sugar ¼ cup fat-free powdered milk 8 eggs (yolks only needed) 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract toppings (fruits, whipped cream, nuts, chocolate chips)

eat the milk, sugar and powdered milk Let the games begin! Mix the milk, sugar and powdered milk in a large pot. Bring the mix to a low simmer over medium heat and stir to dissolve the sugar, then turn the heat down and just keep it warm.

While constantly whisking, slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks. Whisk until it is blended.

Now, pour the mixture back into the pot you used for the hot milk and increase the heat to medium. Stir the mixture constantly with a wooden or plastic spatula, until the mixture has thickened. Make sure the mixture registers around 170 to 180 F (check with an instantread thermometer).

Now, it’s time to decide what kind of ice cream you want! Kinder Chocolate taste? Crumble the chocolate and melt it over a low simmer until you have a liquid version. If you want your ice cream to be fruitier, just blend your favourite fruits together (again, a liquid version is needed). Whatever flavour it is that you crave (it’s all possible), make sure you have a blendable version of it.

Stir the cream mixture together with the pureed fruit (if you’re making chocolate ice cream, don’t mix it yet). Stir it up well. Now take the freezer bowl and pour the mixture into it. Then, put the bowl into the ice cream maker.

Turn the ice cream maker on and let it work until your ice cream has thickened (around 20 minutes). If you’re making chocolate ice cream, this is the time to add the melted chocolate. The ice cream is ready when you hear the motor straining as the ice cream freezes.

TAP INTO YOUR THOUGHTS AND IMAGINATIONS The first thing to do is to tap into your imaginations and thoughts. We all have fantasies, ideas, “seeds”. These seeds are the core of books, songs, paintings. What is your seed? Your idea? What do you want to bring out? What do you want to tell? Only if you know it, you can figure out in which form you want to create it. (You can’t create something that you don’t know.)

JUST START IN “Just starting in” may be the best thing to do. Instead of forcing yourself to start into something that doesn’t inspire you or fit you, give yourself the freedom to do anything you like as long as it inspires you. Think of any sort of art project that gives you the stimulation and start.

LOOK AT OTHER ARTISTS’ WORK But, this one comes with caution. Looking at other artists’ work can be a hindrance rather than a help. So, don’t focus on it, just browse.

DON’T GIVE UP There will be times where you will feel discouraged, un-motivated and uninspired. You will feel like giving up. Don’t. It is the most normal thing to feel and it shouldn’t stop you from creating ever. Not many great creations happen overnight. Truly great creations take time, exercise, heart and with it: the power of will. (Keep at it.)

INTERVIEW WITH AMANDA OLEANDER With over one million followers on just Instagram, Amanda Oleander is the art queen of social media. Fascinated by what people do behind closed doors, Oleander illustrates the uncomfortable, day to day moments that resonate with everyone.

What inspired you to become an illustrator ? I've always loved illustrating. My university counselor inspired me to concentrate in illustration vs. painting or graphic design. She told me to pick my absolute favourite type of art and concentrate on that. It was a close pick between painting and illustration. Now I do both! What inspires you today when it comes to your illustrations? My life. I create from ideas and experiences I have experienced. What central message do you aim to give people through your illustrations? What do you think is the main reason youâ€™ve gained such success? I don't aim to give people a message through my art. I feel like a vessel that translates my thoughts and feelings that come to me from the universe and mind based on the way I view and experience the world. I then make art out of it. Art is my way of defining and expressing these thoughts and experiences. Those that connect become the audience. I think I've gained success because I am consistent, and because I create from personal experience. 28

Q&A • When and how did you know you had ‘made it` as an artist? When it was being shared and written/talked about internationally and I was living comfortably off of my art. What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to your work? My wrist! I wear a brace at night, and it has been helping, but I have wrist pain that interferes with creating at times. Who are your role models/influencers in the Art community? Eric Molinsky who illustrated the original rugrats characters, Tim Burton, Shel Silverstein, Jenny Saville, Alice Neel to name a few. How would you describe your illustrations in three words? Contemporary, traditional (medium wise), and personal. Are there any exciting projects happening soon that we should get excited for? I collaborated on a fun poetry book with my creative husband, Joey Rudman. Every poem is accompanied by an illustration. That will be coming out within the next couple months. That and a lot of new paintings in the works in addition to my daily illustrations. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? The other day Joey was dancing in the living room while I was making dinner. It was a bit dark already, when all of a sudden, he yelped and ran into the kitchen, freaked out that he stepped on a mouse and saw it scurry under the curtain. I turned the light on and went to investigate. I asked him if it was big and he said "Yes! It's like the size of the remote control!" I lifted the curtain up to see a palmetto bug, and when I told him we both burst out laughing. Can you tell us something about you that nobody knows ? I'm not sure I can answer that because I'm such an open book.. hmm let's see... yep, nothing comes to mind... sorry to end this so anticlimactic. ✤

s fortunate as we at fact magazine have been when it comes to test driving the finest motorcars on the market, we have not been fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a Subaru. That is, until now. Producing models since the 1950’s, this Japanese brand has not only proven itself on the roads, but has excelled in the World Rally Championships, having won a total of five World Rally titles. Thanks to the great team at Motorcity, we finally got our chance to experience one of our favourite motorcar brands in the 2020 Subaru WRX.As the streamlined figure of the WRX came into full view, we were immediately impressed by the sporty and sleek nature of the exterior. The most eye-catching of all external features has to be the large hood scoop that would make this car look at home on a racing track. This feature helps to cool down the engine and keep the car functioning at full performance. Additional noteworthy frontal features include the LED headlamps with an auto-leveliser as well as LED front fog lamps. Moving to the flanks, the lines and curves of the body flow effortlessly from front to rear, with 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels and side sill spoilers hinting at the WRX’s on road capabilities. At the back end, LED rear fog lamps, a twin dual exhaust system and a rear lip spoiler all add to the prowess of the vehicle. On the roof, a power-sliding, tilt-adjustable, glass sunroof as well as carrier installation brackets add to the comfort and functionality of this model. Slipping inside the cabin, we were greeted by the comfort of the front sport seats complete with fancy red stitching. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable with lumbar support and provides a commanding driving position. The striking red stitching continues on the tilt-adjustable, leather sports steering wheel that felt great in hand. All of the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a high-quality and the overall space is well-designed and functional. With plenty of head, shoulder and leg room in both the front and the rear seating, five adults fit inside comfortably. The boot offers 460-litres of storage space, a capacity that is greatly increased when the rear seats are folded flat. The Infotainment apparatus includes a 7-inch display as well as a six-speaker audio system. This setup includes voice recognition and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio remote control switches are conveniently mounted on the steering wheel and both dual USB ports and the auxiliary audio input jack are located on the centre panel. A dual gage layout is present on the dashboard with a 3.5inch full-colour LCD display. We found this setup to be both functional and user-friendly, adding to an already satisfying experience. Finally, it was time to get the WRX out onto the tarmac and we were all smiles as the horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged, boxer petrol engine roared to life. With a 1998 cc capacity, a maximum output of 197 kW at 5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 2400 to 5200 rpm, this automatic vehicle can shoot from 0 – 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and offers a top speed of 240 km/h. The WRX houses various systems and control features to improve driving performance, including Subaru Intelligent Drive (SIDrive), a Variable Torque Distribution All-Wheel Drive System,

a Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control System and Adaptive Cruise Control to name but a few. This translates to a car with great handling, cornering ability, acceleration, and braking. In fact, we have to say that this Subaru model is amongst the most enjoyable vehicles we have ever had the privilege of test driving. When it comes to safety, the designers at Subaru have included a host of features to ensure you and your family’s wellbeing. These features include a multitude of SRS airbags throughout the vehicle, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, High Beam Assist, whiplash reducing front seats, a 4-wheel Antilock Braking System, a Brake Assist System, an Emergency Break Stop Signal, ISO-FIX Adapted Child Seat Anchors, Child-proof Rear Door Locks as well as an engine Immobiliser. In truth, the only feature we felt was missing from this impressive array was the frontal camera, a minor detail when considering everything else on offer. In closing, we found the Subaru WRX to be a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance, safe and functional vehicle that was extremely fun to drive. ✤

This being said, we are driving to the The RitzCarlton, Bahrain to pick up the order we placed from the newly launched La Plage takeaway menu. Setting the table back home, after picking up our delicious order, we are ready to dine. From the crisp spears of lettuce and crumbles of rich feta cheese that sit next to the perfect sweet red cherry tomatoes of our Greek salad, to a sinful pizza, to SO much more, we are looking only at seriously good food. So, where to begin? Where to stop? We don’t know. But because sushi is always a good idea, we are starting our treat with the freshest crispy hammour rolls in front of us. Our tongue unites with melt-inyour-mouth tender rolls that are so creamy and flavoursome — it’s safe to say that our food cravings just got fulfilled. • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT We are passing up the sushi in favour of trying the sinful Pizza Diavola that we were just mentioning above. One bite, and — wow. That’s really all we can say about this pizza. Okay, we can (and will) say a lot more about it than that, but “wow” seems like the most pertinent descriptor, for we can’t remember the last time we were so blown away by a simple pizza. Chewy and crisp dough meets gooey melted cheese, juicy mushrooms, and tender chorizo— everything about this Pizza Diavola is just right. Next up, we enjoy wonderfully smooth and creamy guacamole with classy tortilla chips. The tangy lime flavour partners up with the subtle herby taste, enlivening the flavour of this amazing dip. The Chicken shawarma also hits our taste buds just right, but it’s the Chicken Nasi Goreng that has us in awe: The spices are that kind of top-notch mix that make us feel like we are having this dish in Indonesia itself. We barely manage to stop ourselves from overeating this delicious dish, but we have to, for there is also our sweet ending waiting for us — Cheesecake. He-llo you! Did anyone ever tell you what perfection you are? Light, yet rich, sweet yet not too much. You are that kind of cheesecake that we cannot have enough of. Excited to get to know if this service is too good to be true, we are ordering two of their many recipe boxes — the Lamb Burani Gosh Recipe Box (boneless lamb leg served in a garlic, onion and tomato gravy and rounded off with their chef's home ground spice selection) and the Murgh Soweta Recipe Box (boneless Chicken leg served in a rich, medium spicy corn based tomato, onion, cashew nut and cream gravy). When our order arrives, we are impressed by the packaging of the ingredients; vacuum-packed to maintain and protect the freshness. We start to unpack everything and follow the recipe card step by step on how to cook these amazing dishes. And guess what? We love how quick and easy it all goes. The ingredients were so well prepared, we literally just have to put everything together. Our BBQ package comes with the restaurant’s readyto-grill signature BBQ short ribs, lamb chops, Stockyard beef ribeye, Stockyard beef striploin and chicken kebab, accompanied by creamy mushroom sauce, natural gravy, Bernaise sauce, pomerry mustard, and even charcoal for the grill. Starters, such as Baharat’s legendary hummus with Arabic bread, grilled asparagus with parmesan cheese, and potato salad with bacon and mayonnaise are also included, to give the meat some good company. Juicy, chargrilled mushrooms and baked macaroni béchamel that is loaded to the hilt with velvety cheese are also on the palate, and it’s safe to say that even if this is the “at home” version of our BBQ night at Baharat, we enjoy the same delicious experience. As for the sides, the shrimp kunafa with sweet chilli sauce was a highlight for sure, but believe it or not, the mutable with tahina is the dish that managed to make us forget the main course (for a while at least). How can an eggplant dip be that flavoursome, although the ingredients are so simple? We have no idea, but we love it. For our sweet tooth, we finally indulge in a soft pistachio cake that makes for the perfect ending. Start Running Safely From Home Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

Imposed self-isolation has changed societies normal routines, from work to spending weekends socialising with friends, and especially in how we get exercise. For people who do not exercise regularly, the sudden transition to running may be a recipe for overtraining and injury, so with that in mind, here are some pointers on how to start running safely from home. 1 – Have a Plan When setting a running goal, set an end date and work backwards. The faster we run, the more muscle damage we will experience. Therefore, our planning needs to be a juggling act between running faster to provoke an adaptation in our body, and being slow enough so that we are able to follow up sessions with another session the day after. 2 – Listen to Your Body During self-isolation, most events have been cancelled, which means that there is no rush to peak for an event that will occur months later. If your body is sore after a session and you do not think you can run at the intensity and distance you set for yourself when planning your program, listen to your body and adjust the program accordingly. 3 – Recovery Recovery is important as it allows us to not only be ready for our next run but also allows the body to absorb the training we have just completed. By adopting the above measures and including them in your running during selfisolation, the chances of injury will decrease and hopefully, the chances of you enjoying and continuing running when our lives return to normal will increase. Where Does Fat Go? Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

The other day one of my clients asked me “where does the fat go”? Now for many years, people thought fat turned to muscle and vice versa and the truth is many people still think that today but it’s not true. Muscle and fat are as different as apples and oranges. So, what happens to it I hear you ask? Well here comes the science bit “fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. You exhale the carbon dioxide and the water mixes into your circulation until it’s lost as urine or sweat”. Almost every carbohydrate, fats, and proteins that you eat, and drink is converted into carbon dioxide and water except for some small parts that turn into urea and other solids which are excreted as urine. Dietary fibre foods such as leafy greens, beans, seeds, and corn are the only things that make it to your colon undigested. When you exercise and exert yourself 84% of fat turns into carbon dioxide and 16% is turned into water, so the heavier you breathe, the more fat you lose. This however does not mean you can just sit around heavy breathing as you would just start to hyperventilate and pass out. So once again when it comes to weight loss and a healthy lifestyle there are no quick fixes, you actually have to put in the work and embark on a good fitness routine and healthy eating plan to see the results. ✤

These are great places to take friends when they come to visit and there are so many cafes to walk to in those areas.

What are your personal and professional goals for 2020? To survive 2020! This has been a rollercoaster year and it has taught me so much about the value of community and relying on the people around you. Simple acts of kindness like checking in with friends have become more meaningful. Having our fast paced world come to a screeching halt has caused so much uncertainty for everyone but it has also revealed that weâ€™re stronger when we come together and help each other. My goals for the rest of the year are rather modest: to be supportive of those around me and remain positive as we go through a recovery period.
