MONKEYING AROUND IN BAHRAIN HARBOUR
Dubai success story Brass Monkey is coming to town.
Brass Monkey Hospitality, the homegrown UAE brand that has evolved into one of Dubai’s best known entertainment concepts, is set to make its Bahrain debut at Bahrain Harbour, with the group’s Simon Robinson, Director of Operations and Franchise, declaring: "It's about finding communities where Brass Monkey genuinely belongs. Bahrain offers exactly that."
The venue brings together quality dining, signature cocktails, bowling, arcade games and DJ tunes in a destination designed around how people socialise today.
"Bahrain has always stood out as a market with a genuine appreciation for hospitality," said Simon Robinson. "It has an incredibly strong food culture, a loyal local audience and a thriving social scene. As we looked at where Brass Monkey should expand internationally, Bahrain was always on the list."
Conceived as a destination that evolves throughout the evening, Brass Monkey combines its elevated food menu, a strong beverage programme and entertainment in a way that encourages guests to stay, explore and enjoy the experience beyond a traditional meal.
The Bahrain Harbour venue will bring together the elements that
have defined the brand's success in Dubai, including premium casual dining, bowling, arcade games and music programmed with spaces designed for groups, celebrations and everyday occasions alike.
"We've always believed that people are looking for more than just somewhere to eat," Simon continued.
"They want places that feel energetic, welcoming and memorable.
Brass Monkey has always been about creating experiences that bring people together, whether that's over dinner, a game of bowling or a night out with friends. We're excited to introduce that experience to Bahrain."
The Bahrain opening forms part of Brass Monkey Hospitality's largest expansion since the business was founded in Dubai in 2020. Alongside Bahrain, the company will also open new locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with all three venues scheduled to launch in September/October 2026. ✤

CULTURE AND HISTORY FOR KIDS
A selection of interactive activities aimed at boosting youngsters’ connection to the Kingdom’s rich heritage is on offer through the Children’s Cultural Program from Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.
Now in its second edition, the programme, which began in July, takes place over consecutive weeks at Bahrain National Museum with each week exploring a distinct theme, showcasing a different aspect of Bahrain's cultural heritage through the following titles: Tales from History, Palm Tree Tales, Arts and Crafts and Heritage Tales. Activities aim to foster children's awareness of Bahrain's history and cultural heritage through a series of engaging and interactive activities that nurture their artistic and intellectual development while strengthening cultural connections. The Arts and Crafts week, focusses on the traditional handicrafts for which Bahrain is renowned. Through a varied programme of practical workshops, participants will develop their creativity and artistic skills while exploring Bahrain's rich craft traditions, including rug-making, decorating bags with gold thread and traditional pottery. Participants will also visit the traditional pottery workshops in A'ali, where they will gain first-hand insight into one of Bahrain's oldest crafts, before exploring the Traditional Crafts Hall at the Bahrain National Museum. Artist Hanadi Al Ghanim will lead the Little Picasso's Touch workshop, offering children a unique artistic experience that encourages creative expression while strengthening their appreciation of Bahrain's artistic and craft traditions.
The final week, Heritage Tales, celebrates the richness and diversity of Bahrain's cultural heritage, introducing children to the stories, customs and traditions that continue to shape the Kingdom's national identity.
The programme includes a guided tour of the Customs and Traditions Hall at the Bahrain National Museum, alongside a series of practical workshops, including creating traditional plaster doors, producing decoupage artworks using vintage fabrics and preparing traditional Bahraini sweets and dishes. Participants will also visit Showaiter factory, where they will discover the traditional process of making authentic Bahraini sweets.
The programme also features Finjan Al Sanaa with Aisha Al Sulaiti, an interactive activity introducing children to the values and etiquette of traditional Bahraini hospitality. Youngsters will discover traditional games and take part in a photography experience in traditional Bahraini attire, creating lasting memories while strengthening their appreciation of the Kingdom's cultural heritage. ✤
NEW SUMMER TRAINING CAMP
Looking for a summer activity that's about more than keeping children busy? Gadeha Junior combines fitness, teamwork and life skills in a unique youth camp at Exhibition World Bahrain.
There’s no shortage of summer camps for children, but Gadeha Junior is taking a different approach. Held under the direction of Lieutenant General His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, National Security Advisor and Royal Guard Commander, the new youth training camp promises six days (per group) of physical challenges, teamwork and life skills in a military-inspired setting.
Running from August 8 to September 3 at Exhibition World Bahrain – Hall 7 and 8, the programme is open to boys and girls of all nationalities, aged 10 to 17, and has been designed to encourage self-reliance, discipline and responsibility through practical, hands-on experiences. Rather than focussing solely on sport or recreation, participants will rotate through a series of training zones that test endurance, concentration and reaction speed, while learning how to work effectively as part of a team. Each group will complete an intensive 30-hour training experience over six days a week, with daily sessions running from 9am to 2pm. All activities take place indoors in fully equipped facilities and are supervised by specialist instructors, with exercises adapted to suit the different age groups.
The camp also introduces young people to the work of Bahrain's military, giving them a better understanding of the role the security forces play in protecting the nation.
“The Gadeha Youth Training Camp embodies a comprehensive national vision to prepare a conscious generation capable of facing challenges, by instilling the
values of discipline, self-reliance, teamwork, leadership and accountability, which builds outstanding young people committed to their national identity and [who] have a sincere sense of belonging to their country,” said His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
“We are keen to provide high-quality programmes that enable young men and women to acquire the experiences and life skills that enhance their readiness for the future and familiarise them with the significant national role played by military and security agencies in protecting the Kingdom and safeguarding its achievements, which reinforces the values of loyalty and positive citizenship.”
The camp will be split into four separate dedicated groups for boys and girls: Group 1 held from August 8 to 13 (boys), Group 2 from August 15 to 20 (boys), Group 3 from August 22 to 27 (girls) and Group 4 from August 29 to September 3 (boys).
Registration costs BD33 (including VAT), while an optional home pick-up and drop-off transport service is available for BD10.
The site will also welcome members of the public each afternoon from 3pm to 9pm through a separate ticketed experience (details to be announced), allowing families to see more of the camp environment. ✤

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
Sitting on the shores of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, pairs old and new with its mix of ancient culture and bold modern architecture. Spend your first morning exploring Icherisheher, the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a maze of narrow lanes, cosy tea houses and historic landmarks, including the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Stepping outside the medieval walls, the city takes on a more contemporary feel with the impressive Heydar Aliyev Centre (designed by the legendary architect Zaha Hadid) and the impossible to miss Flame Towers looming over the skyline. Outside Baku, Gobustan National Park offers prehistoric rock carvings and Dashgil's famous bubbling mud volcanoes –Azerbaijan boasting the largest concentration in the world. For cooler air and scenic forest trails, the resort town of Gabala is a couple of hours into the Caucasus foothills and worth the detour. And don't leave without trying traditional plov (saffron-infused rice, meat and dried fruits). Compact, budget-friendly and packed with personality, Baku makes a perfect little getaway.

CYPRUS
From sunny beaches and archaeological sites to mountain villages and long lunches overlooking the sea, Cyprus has all the ingredients for a last-minute getaway. Fly into Larnaca, then take your pick of the island's many personalities. History lovers can head to Paphos for Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings and the legendary Aphrodite's Rock. Further along the coast, Limassol has a lively marina scene with terrace cafes, restaurants and a seafront made for leisurely evening walks. If you need to cool off from the heat, the Troodos Mountains is a scenic drive inland with cobblestone villages and small vineyards sitting among forest trails and waterfalls. Ayia Napa covers the classic beach-holiday end of the island with its turquoise water and beach bars that get going by mid-afternoon, while the capital, Nicosia, offers a different side, with old Venetian walls and bustling bazaars. Then there's the food, from grilled halloumi and souvlaki to generous mezze spreads that just keep coming. Cyprus delivers a wonderfully relaxed Mediterranean break just a short flight away.

GOA, INDIA
Goa has long been a favourite for beach holidays, but come monsoon season, this laid-back corner of India takes on a completely different character. As the rain rolls in, the countryside transforms into a patchwork of emerald paddy fields, overflowing rivers and thick forests, making it one of the state's most beautiful seasons. While the beaches are quieter, there's still plenty to discover. Wander through Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to magnificent Portuguese churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Then explore the colourful Latin Quarter of Fontainhas with its pastel houses, narrow lanes and charming cafés. Inland, spice plantations are at their lushest, Dudhsagar Falls roars into life and wildlife sanctuaries make for good scenic walks. Food is a big part of the experience too, from fish curry and proper fiery vindaloo to chai that tastes even better when it's raining outside. Slower paced and wonderfully atmospheric, monsoon season reveals a side of Goa many travellers never get to see.

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA
Known as the Bride of the Red Sea, Jeddah has experienced rapid change over the past few years, but its easy-going coastal charm still remains. Its old quarter, Al Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where coral-stone houses with beautifully carved wooden lattice windows line narrow streets filled with cafés, artisan shops and bustling souqs. Along the waterfront, the lively Jeddah Corniche stretches for miles, offering sea views, galleries and installations at the Art Promenade, with plenty of places to stop for food and coffee while watching King Fahd's Fountain, the tallest in the world. For those travelling with kids, the Fakieh Aquarium houses more than 200 species of fish, while Al Shallal Theme Park offers thrilling rides. And if you're keen to get out on the water, the coral reefs just offshore are among the best in the region for snorkelling and diving. With the Saudi Summer campaign currently running (check out visitsaudi.com for the latest promotions), it’s the best time to discover this port city.
GO: GULF AIR: 2H 25M | MULTIPLE DIRECT FLIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.
SALALAH, OMAN
Forget everything you know about Gulf summers. From July to September, the Khareef (monsoon) season transforms Oman's Dhofar region into a misty green oasis, something you won't find anywhere else this close to home. Wadi Darbat, a lush valley of emerald pools, waterfalls and roaming camels, is at its best this time of year, while the cliffs of Jabal Ittin offer spectacular viewpoints above the clouds. Ayn Ghaidh makes for a good half-day hike out to a hidden spring, or you can skip the walking altogether and enjoy scenic road trips, driving through the fog with the windows down. Mughsail Beach is another must-visit for its famous blowholes, where strong waves force seawater high up through gaps in the coastal rock – be prepared to get soaked! The city is also known for its frankincense heritage, with plantations, museums and archaeological sites telling the story of one of Arabia's oldest exports. It's easy to see why Salalah is by far one of the Gulf's favourite seasonal escapes every summer.

From the Caucasus to the Indian Ocean, these are the destinations GCC residents can enjoy visa-free, with an ETA or a visa on arrival.
ARMENIA
Few destinations still feel as under-the-radar as Armenia. Yerevan, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, is built largely from pink and black volcanic tuff, giving it a warm, unified glow. Climb the Cascade complex for views towards Mount Ararat, then wander down to Republic Square and the buzzing Vernissage market for handwoven rugs and carved crafts. Just outside the capital, Geghard Monastery is cut directly into the mountainside, while the pagan-era Garni Temple perches above a dramatic gorge. Khor Virap, with Mount Ararat towering just beyond the border looming behind it, is one of the country's most photographed spots. Food is hearty and unfussy: khorovats (barbecued meat), soft lavash bread and dolma feature on most tables, alongside Armenian liquor and sun-ripened apricots. Add Lake Sevan for a cooler mountain break and you have a genuinely offbeat, easy escape that still feels wonderfully undiscovered.

GEORGIA
Mountains, centuries of history and a walkable capital rarely come this compact. Tbilisi's old town is a jumble of balconied houses, sulphur bathhouses and the hilltop Narikala Fortress, all linked by the sleek, modern Bridge of Peace. Ride the cable car for sweeping views over the rooftops and the Kura River below. The food scene is a highlight in itself: khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and khinkali (dumplings) are best enjoyed as part of a traditional supra feast. For scenery, head to Kakheti's rolling vineyards, continue to Svaneti's medieval stone towers or make your way to Stepantsminda, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits against the dramatic Caucasus peaks. Coastal Batumi offers a different pace altogether, with palm-lined promenades and Black Sea views. Between the hiking, the history and the food, Georgia rarely feels rushed or overrun.
GO: GULF AIR: 6H 50M | ONE-STOP FLIGHT TO TBILISI, MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK.
MALDIVES
That postcard shot everyone recognises (turquoise water, white sand, overwater villas) barely does the Maldives justice. Spread across nearly 1,200 coral islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean, this is about as close to a tropical fantasy as travel gets. Many resorts occupy their own private island, ringed by a house reef where snorkelling or diving turns up manta rays, turtles and reef sharks with little effort. Days blur into a rhythm of overwater breakfasts, sandbank picnics and sunset dolphin cruises. For total indulgence, you can also enjoy spa treatments in glass-floored pavilions suspended above the lagoons. Malé, the compact capital, makes for a brief cultural detour, with its markets and mosques, though most guests are whisked onward by speedboat or seaplane. Food leans on tuna, coconut and chilli, with Maldivian fish curry a menu staple. It's an easy destination to switch off completely.

SEYCHELLES
Life moves at a different pace in Seychelles. One moment you're driving through dense tropical forest, the next you're standing on a beach framed by giant granite boulders and calm, impossibly clear water. Its 115 islands are scattered across the Indian Ocean, but three do most of the heavy lifting: Mahé, the mountainous main island; Praslin, home to the otherworldly Vallée de Mai and its giant coco de mer palms; and La Digue, best explored by bicycle, where Anse Source d'Argent's pink granite boulders make for one of the most photographed beaches anywhere. Beyond the sand, the giant tortoises of Curieuse Island and the coral gardens off Mahé's coast are well worth the detour. Creole cooking blends French, African and Indian influences. Expect grilled fish, octopus curry and plenty of fresh tropical fruit. Getting between islands usually means a short flight or ferry, which keeps the pace unhurried. Small as it is, between the wildlife, the beaches and the food, it never feels like it's short-changing you.
GO: GULF AIR: 7H 20M | ONE-STOP FLIGHT TO MAHÉ, MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK.
SRI LANKA
Few places squeeze as much variety into one island as Sri Lanka. The country brings together ancient heritage, wildlife and coastline in a way few destinations can. Cultural sites such as Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the cave temples of Dambulla showcase the island's long history, while Kandy remains an important spiritual centre surrounded by green hills. Further south, Galle's historic fort blends colonial architecture with independent boutiques, cafés and sea views. Inland, the train journey between Kandy and Ella passes tea plantations, waterfalls and mist-covered mountains, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself. National parks including Yala and Udawalawe offer opportunities to spot a wide variety of birdlife, elephants and, with some luck, elusive leopards. Food ranges from fragrant rice and curry spreads to hoppers, kottu roti and fresh seafood along the coast. Compact enough to cover several regions in one trip, Sri Lanka offers constantly changing scenery without spending long hours on the road.

SUN’S UP, COOL DOWN
With temperatures currently at peak furnace, the island’s food and beverage outlets are going out of their way to help you keep cool. From speciality drinks to dreamy desserts, there’s something to suit every taste. Read on for a selection of our favourite summer coolers.
BREWED
A hidden gem, tucked away in the Diplomatic Area, there’s no secret about Brewed’s superior coffee offering. But for summer, they’ve come up with some rather special cooler options in the shape of Pina colada – light, refreshing and practically screams 'out of office', a sip of pure sunshine at just BD2.5 – and Mango Coconut Matcha – refreshing, creamy and just the right amount of matcha energy, at BD2.8.
But there’s another favourite they didn’t tell us about, the Brazilian Limeade – creamy, citrusy, refreshing and dangerously easy to finish – perhaps they really are keeping this one a secret. Well, now you know where to find it. GO: Visit @brewed.cafe on Instagram for more information.
CARIBOU COFFEE
Summer’s all about the matcha at The Bou and we’re totally here for it. Caribou Coffee has unveiled eight, yep eight, new matcha creations: Sky, Lavender, Mango, Strawberry, Hojicha, Hibiscus and Pink and Blue Cocotcha – a gorgeous creamy, coconutty concoction. Why eight? Because one flavour just isn’t enough, of course. Summer Matcha boxes are available exclusively at the Hala Plaza branch, guess where we’ll be at the weekend? And, if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also got summer brew boxes – six bottles of smooth cold-brew coffee, available across all branches and on Talabat. We feel a coffee cold one coming on.

Yes, Chocomelt is known for its amazing cakes (we’re particularly fond of the Matilda) but with the weather demanding we all slow down and chill out –the outlet, which has branches at Zallaq and Al Liwan, is all about refreshing summer flavours.
Check out Dragonfly – a blend of fresh mango, vanilla soft serve, milk and honey, topped with fresh dragon fruit – or the Sky Blue Matcha, a smooth mix of Uji matcha, with milk and homemade sweet white chocolate sauce and a creamy baby foam.
Want more? There’s also Dirty Espresso, Dirty Dolce, two further mango options to sample and plenty more besides at Chocomelt, where the latest drinks are made to keep you cool all season long.
GO: Visit @chocomelt.bah on Instagram for more information.
DOSE
While everyone else is going big on the matcha, Dose, which has eight branches across the island, including Hidd, Juffair, Saar and Zallaq, is stepping into the more traditional hot-weather fare with a selection of fruity iced teas in refreshing summer flavours. Alongside the classics, passion fruit and peach, they’ve added Happy Forest, a delightful blend of raspberry and hibiscus that’s an ideal thirst quencher. But don’t worry, if you’re a Dose coffee die-hard, you can still get your favourite Iced Americano, Iced V60 and Cold Drip too. And, not surprisingly, there’s also premium matcha on the menu. GO: Visit @dosecafe_bh on Instagram for more information.
FLORENCIA
One of our favourite ice cream shops is getting into the summer spirit – well, to be fair, it’s in the summer spirit all year long. But now, they have sharing boxes – grab four flavours of your choice (yes, that will be four mascarpone and orange, please) and share with your friends… or not. Available for delivery. GO: Call 3400 7233 or visit @florenciaicecreambh on Instagram for more information.
KADOURA
The new summer menu at Kadoura at Seef Mall features a range of zesty Mediterranean flavours with lemon infusions all around. But the bit that caught our eye is the ice cream, served with a half lemon on top. Go for the food, stay for the freshness. We love this idea. GO: Call 3833 1113 or visit @kadourabh on Instagram for more information.
NOOK BAKEHOUSE
OK, you caught us. Nook’s usually our go-to spot for all things cake – if you haven’t tried the double chocolate brownie, you haven’t lived. But, since we’re on the subject of summer coolers, we have to mention the two special drinks they’ve introduced for when we just need to chill. The Peach Iced Tea is a classic, fruity and refreshing, and we’re told the Mango Matcha is rather fab, we’re imagining the deeply umami, slightly bitter flavour of matcha with a spike of sweet juicy mango. Yum. Somehow, we think it would go perfectly with one of their almond croissants. See you in Zayed Town. GO: Visit @nook.bakehouse on Instagram for more information.

PLACE CAFÉ
Place, at Saar Greens, is not just the place for great brunchy stuff, though we have to admit we’re rather partial to the avocado toast and pancakes. But, when we’re looking to beat the summer’s fierce heat, we head there for our latest drink obsessions – the best-selling Salted Vanilla Matcha, Coco Blue Matcha and the Matcha Colada – matcha, coconut foam and flakes, pina coco syrup and a juicy chunk of pineapple. And they start at just BD2.900, what’s not to love?
We’re also rather partial to the fruity berry hibiscus concoction and the great coffee, steaming hot and in proper mugs, but that’s a story for another day.
GO: Visit @placebahrain on Instagram for more information.
SCOOP CREAMERY
We can’t imagine summer coolers without mentioning Scoop – and don’t come at us, this list is alphabetical, we love them all! Scoop’s had a mini closure for some behind the scenes renovation work so, while we’re not actually here to share any particular summer offers, we are telling you they’re open and back to business as usual, serving the much-loved, small-batch, uniquely flavoured, handmade gelato that’s made them a very firm favourite with you and us.
GO: Visit @scoop_creamery on Instagram for more information.
THE ORANGERY TEAROOM & PATISSERIE
Anyone who’s visited knows The Orangery is not just a pretty face. It has branches at The Avenues and Al Liwan, as well as the very gorgeous original at Palmyard Hotel in Adliya, each serving amazing food in picturesque surroundings.
For summer, they’ve come up with a range of special drinks to bring the temperature down, from classic matcha lattes to strawberry-infused favourites and tropical blends. Choose from the Strawberry Matcha Latte, which looks every bit as amazing as it tastes, Coconut Cloud and Matcha Latte, three light, refreshing creations, each with its own character, crafted to brighten the season. Perfect with the seasonal creation, Mango Coconut Gâteau. Drinks available daily across all locations for dine-in, takeaway and delivery.

WHERE TECHNOLOGY TAKES THE LEAD
Our time with the Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 Hybrid revealed a confident step forward, with its advanced cabin giving the model a whole new personality.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 Hybrid caught our attention before we had even reached it. Finished in Aqua-Mint, with its illuminated grille glowing, it looked as though somebody had sharpened every familiar CLA line. Then we opened the door and discovered where the real transformation had happened.
Turning the Familiar Into Something Fresh
The bonnet stretches low and long. The roofline sweeps rearwards into the muscular GT-style tail, while short overhangs make the body look taut.
Our AMG Line test car added 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels and deeper bodywork. Dark Night Package detailing contrasted the paintwork, while flush door handles kept the profile clean.
The hybrid’s grille carried a chrome Mercedes-Benz pattern framed by light, with an illuminated star at its centre. After sunset, the CLA did not so much arrive as make an entrance. In Aqua-Mint, the CLA stood out immediately, proving that sensible hybrids need not settle for those shades so often reserved for office furniture.
Settling Into Something Special
Inside, the CLA felt far more substantial than its compact positioning suggests. Clean white MICROCUT panels swept across the black ARTICO sports seats, while anthracite trim gave the dashboard a cool, architectural finish. Ambient lighting glowed around the cabin, and the centre console appeared to float between the front seats.
The seats held us snugly and memory settings with four-way lumbar support made it easy to settle in. The panoramic roof flooded the cabin with natural light, while THERMOTRONIC climate control dealt quickly with the heat.
The 405-litre boot added practicality. The clean white upholstery looked fantastic, although arriving with an uncovered karak felt like an insurance claim waiting to happen.
When the Dashboard Talks Back
The cabin was where the CLA made its strongest impression. A sweep of glass seemed to run almost from one door to the other. The instrument display flowed into the crisp 12.3-inch central touchscreen, while the front passenger received a separate OLED screen. Together, they created the widest digital landscape we had encountered in a car of this size. It looked less like a dashboard and more like the front row of a very exclusive cinema.
The latest MBUX system ran on Mercedes-Benz’s new operating platform, with sharp graphics. Its Zero Layer placed useful information directly in front of us instead of burying it in menus. Smartphone integration was seamless, wireless charging kept cables out of sight and the separate OLED display gave the passenger a screen of their own without commandeering the central display.
The MBUX Virtual Assistant was the bigger surprise. After saying “Hey Mercedes”, we could ask a question naturally, follow it with another and continue without starting again. After years of speaking to cars as though addressing a confused relative over a bad phone connection, holding an actual conversation felt almost indecently futuristic.
Augmented-reality navigation placed bright arrows over a live camera view of the road, making unfamiliar junctions easier to understand. Facial recognition worked with the selfie and video camera to personalise the cabin. Yes, the CLA has a selfie camera. We tested it with the solemn professionalism expected of motoring journalists, right up until someone suggested we try several different angles, leading to an amount of posing we would rather not document.
Burmester surround sound delivered crisp, detailed audio with enough depth to make even our most overplayed tracks feel fresh again.
The Quiet Art of Getting a Move On
The 1.5-litre unit developed 120kW or 163hp, with a 22kW electric motor integrated into the transmission. That assistance gave the CLA an immediate lift from low speeds, helping it pull away smoothly before the petrol powertrain joined in. The transition was so discreet that we often noticed it on the display before we felt it.
“It looked less like a dashboard and more like the front row of a very exclusive cinema.”
Under light demand, the hybrid could move electrically at urban speeds and recover energy through all eight gears. Pressing harder produced a smooth but purposeful surge, carrying the CLA to 100km/h in 8.0 seconds, making overtaking feel easy without becoming aggressive.
Lowered comfort suspension kept the body controlled without punishing us over rougher surfaces. The sportier engine sound brought extra theatre when we wanted it, without making every trip to the shops sound like a qualifying lap.
Assistance Without Interference
Distance Assist DISTRONIC managed the gap ahead, while lane keeping and Blind Spot Assist Plus monitored traffic around us. Brake Assist and evasive steering added reassurance without constantly announcing themselves.
PARKTRONIC and Parking Assist worked with a sharp 360° camera to make tight spaces less intimidating. The view was so clear that a badly judged kerb could no longer be blamed on poor visibility. PRE-SAFE protection system, a centre airbag and exit warning completed the package.
More Than a Stylish Upgrade
By the end of our drive, what impressed us most was how naturally the CLA brought everything together. The technology never overwhelmed the experience, and the hybrid system matched it with smooth responses and a composed ride. The CLA could talk, recognise us, guide us through difficult junctions and take a better selfie than many smartphones. The previous model was easy to recognise. This one is difficult to forget. ✤
FINAL EVOLUTION OF AN ICONIC SERIES
McLaren has introduced the new 788HS – the last of its award-winning series supercar evolved from the 720S, the 765LT and the 750S – available in a limited edition of just 200 vehicles globally.
Designed To Drive
The McLaren 788HS features sculpted bodywork elements that provide the most advanced aerodynamic package ever applied to the platform, increasing downforce by 10% over the 765LT. The aerodynamic concept centres around a new S-Duct bonnet, a raised active rear spoiler and an intricate Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser. Working in combination with a bespoke front splitter, these elements enhance stability, performance and driver confidence. Gloss black exterior accents include a roof scoop on Coupe derivatives, and clients can opt for full Visual Carbon Fibre bodywork – encompassing every exterior panel – highlighting the car’s lightweight construction.
The driver–centric cabin layout includes the latest McLaren Infotainment System II for intuitive connectivity and convenience, as well as a lightweight carbon fibre centre console that signifies the level of focus applied to every aspect of the car. The cabin also features bespoke HS branding with a unique perforation pattern for the upholstery and a dedication plaque.
Track Precision, On-Road Engagement
The heart of the 788HS is McLaren’s M840T 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which revs to 8,500rpm and develops peak power at 7,500rpm. With 800Nm of torque, it delivers immediate response and
sustained acceleration – from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 330km/h. The model delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 623PS per tonne – the highest of any car in the series – and it boasts the ‘High Sport’ designation which, until now, has only appeared on two previous McLarens: the MP4-12C HS and the MSO HS.
The Proactive Chassis Control III linked-hydraulic suspension system with bespoke suspension tuning delivers even higher levels of dynamic performance. The car also features a 5mm lower front ride height than the 750S, for a more dynamic and engaging driving experience.
Braking performance is enhanced through carbon ceramic discs derived from the McLaren Senna, with black six-piston forged aluminium monoblock front callipers and integrated cooling for sustained high-performance use. The 788HS also introduces the first centre-lock wheel mechanism ever fitted to this supercar series, in combination with a new Super Lightweight Forged Alloy wheel.
The quad-exit titanium exhaust system amplifies the V8’s distinctive soundtrack, with more intensity throughout the rev range, while carefully engineered induction and exhaust sound symposer technologies immerse occupants in the unmistakable soundtrack of McLaren’s twin-turbocharged V8. ✤

THE RETURN OF AN ICON
The Dodge Charger is back, combining musclecar DNA with up-to-the-minute design.
The return of the Dodge Charger marks the beginning of a new design chapter for one of the most recognisable silhouettes in automotive history. Available with both all-electric and petrolpowered configurations, the new model carries the same DNA that has shaped it for decades.
The aggressive exterior design complements performance features of the new Charger, including an on-demand RWD mode that allows drivers to send 100% of torque to the rear wheels at the push of a button for SIXPACK-powered models, and standard Line Lock and Launch Control for SIXPACK-powered Scat Pack models. At the front, the R-Wing on the all-electric Charger Daytona introduces a distinctive visual and functional element, referencing the legendary Charger Daytona while enabling airflow through the body to enhance aerodynamic performance.
A full-width LED front light creates a modern, horizontal graphic, while the distinctive ‘ring of fire’ rear lamps reinterpret a classic Dodge element with a contemporary edge.
A defining element of the new Charger's exterior is the return of the iconic Fratzog logo. First introduced on Dodge muscle cars between 1962 and 1976, the Fratzog features three delta-shaped elements arranged in an equilateral triangle.
The award-winning Charger’s interior blends immersive
technology with a strong sense of physicality. A layered instrument panel and a sculpted console create a cockpit-like environment, enhanced by wide-format digital displays positioned to support driver engagement.
A defining feature of the cabin is the immersive Attitude Adjustment lighting system, with 64 selectable colours and parametric textures wrapping around the interior. And owners can make their Charger unmistakably their own with a lineup of bold performance seating options. ✤

CHILL OUT
Perfect as our region hits peak summer inferno, the Sony REON POCKET PRO Plus is so much more than just another fan.
This cooling (and heating) device is a plate that sits directly against the base of your neck and can cool or heat the area it comes in contact with.
Designed to be virtually invisible under clothing, so it’s suitable even for business settings, the SMART COOL function automatically adjusts the temperature based on the user’s activity and the environment temperature, which is detected by onboard sensors. The result is seamless cooling, even when moving between extreme temperature variations.
The device has two new independent thermo modules and there’s a newly developed heat-dissipating fan with approximately twice the airflow of conventional fans – you’re looking at twice the cooling effect of a regular fan.
In addition, the upgraded battery has realised a maximum operating time of approximately 34 hours at COOL Level 1, around double the capability of the previous model.
The discrete light grey body has a new operation button. In addition to the conventional power ON/OFF, it can switch between COOL/WARM mode and select the level, allowing intuitive operation even in situations where a smartphone cannot be used.
The operation button is effectively sealed to prevent the ingress of most water droplets and dust. In addition, a cover has been installed on the USB port to allow use in even harsher environments.
A curved design has been created to ensure the cooling surface, which is twice as large as on previous models, is in contact with
the body. There are also multicoloured vent covers that can be used to stop clothing covering and blocking the vents. ✤

LEADERSHIP BUILT ON PEOPLE
With an impressive career spanning more than two decades, Charbel Hanna begins a new chapter as Area General Manager, Bahrain Hotels at Gulf Hotels Group. He speaks about the excitement of stepping into his new role, reflects on the defining moments of his career and offers his perspective on the future of the industry.
Congratulations on your promotion. What does this new role entail, what excites you most and what are your top priorities?
As Area General Manager for Bahrain, I now oversee a portfolio of five properties: Gulf Hotel Convention & Spa, Crowne Plaza Bahrain, Novotel Al Dana Resort, Gulf Executive Residences Juffair and Bahrain Airport Hotel. Moving from leading a single property to guiding a diverse cluster is both an exciting responsibility and a tremendous opportunity. What inspires me most is the ability to create stronger synergies across the portfolio by sharing talent, knowledge, systems and best practices, while recognising the unique identity of each hotel. My priorities are centred on operational excellence, developing high-performing teams, elevating the guest experience, strengthening collaboration across the cluster and delivering sustainable commercial growth.
You've spent over 24 years in the hospitality industry, including more than a decade with Gulf Hotels Group. What have been the key milestones in your career journey?
I've spent 24 years in the hospitality industry, including the last
15 with Gulf Hotels Group. I began at the operational level and progressed through roles including Assistant F&B Manager, F&B Manager, Executive Assistant Manager, Deputy General Manager and General Manager of Crowne Plaza Bahrain before stepping into my current position. While each promotion has been significant, I believe success is measured by the impact you leave behind rather than the title you hold. Throughout every stage of my career, I have aimed to improve the business, develop people and leave every role stronger than I found it. The greatest reward is knowing that years later, those contributions are still remembered.
What's the most important lesson you've learnt throughout your career?
The greatest lesson I've learnt is that people always come first. Strategies, standards and systems are essential, but hospitality is ultimately delivered by people, for people. When you invest in your teams, empower them and create a culture of trust and respect, they naturally deliver exceptional experiences for guests. Strong cultures consistently outperform strong processes alone.
How would you describe your leadership style, and what do you expect from your teams?
My leadership style is built on trust, accountability and support. I see my role as creating an environment where people can succeed by providing direction, removing obstacles and challenging them to reach their full potential. I believe in leading from the front, staying visible, approachable and closely connected to the operation. In return, I expect ownership, attention to detail, collaboration and a proactive mindset. The strongest teams are those that solve problems together, continuously learn and take pride in what they deliver every day.
What advice would you give to young professionals looking to build a long-term career in hospitality?
Don't chase titles – chase experience. Spend time on the floor, understand every department, remain curious and never stop learning. Hospitality rewards those who combine technical expertise with genuine passion for serving people. Build your reputation through consistency, humility and hard work. Careers are marathons, not sprints, and the strongest leaders are those who have first mastered the fundamentals.
How do you see Bahrain's hospitality industry evolving over the next few years?
Bahrain continues to strengthen its position as both a business and leisure destination, and I believe its hospitality sector has an exciting future ahead. As infrastructure, connectivity and tourism continue to develop, guest expectations will become even more sophisticated, particularly around authentic dining experiences, wellness and personalised service. We must continue anticipating those expectations rather than simply responding to them. Strategic international partnerships will continue raising industry standards, and Gulf Hotels Group is committed to investing in its people, properties and concepts to help shape the future of hospitality in Bahrain.
When you're not at work, how do you unwind and maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Family is where I recharge. Spending quality time with my wife Georgette, my son Anthony and my daughter Cyrine helps me maintain perspective despite the demands of the role. I'm also passionate about horse riding. It's a passion that gives me the focus, discipline and sense of calm to step away from the pace of hotel life and return with renewed energy and a fresh perspective. ✤
FROM MEXICO TO MANAMA
With an international career and a multicultural outlook, Chef Sergio Galaz, Executive Chef of Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour and SUSHISAMBA Bahrain, leads both brands, bringing exquisite culinary experiences for guests. He talks about cultural influences, his favourite cuisine and a special dish that represents his cooking philosophy to a T.
Your career has taken you from Mexico to Qatar, Turkey and now Bahrain. How has working across different cultures influenced your approach to cooking?
Every country has taught me something different, not only about food, but about people. Mexico gave me my passion and respect for ingredients, Qatar introduced me to the discipline of working in a truly international environment, Turkey showed me the importance of hospitality and tradition and Bahrain has allowed me to combine all those experiences while leading multicultural teams. Today, my approach is not simply about creating dishes. It is about understanding different cultures, respecting local traditions and building experiences that connect with guests from around the world. I believe great cuisine begins with understanding people before understanding recipes.
You lead both kitchens at Conrad Bahrain and SUSHISAMBA Bahrain. What are the biggest challenges and the most rewarding aspects of managing such diverse dining operations?
Leading both Conrad Bahrain and SUSHISAMBA Bahrain is a unique challenge because they represent two completely different worlds. Conrad focusses on luxury hospitality across multiple dining concepts, banqueting and large-scale operations, while SUSHISAMBA is a high-energy lifestyle restaurant where creativity, precision and guest interaction are everything. The biggest challenge is maintaining consistency and excellence across both operations while adapting to different service styles, teams and guest expectations. The most rewarding part is seeing
talented people grow, building strong teams and watching guests leave with memorable experiences. For me, leadership is about creating an environment where people can perform at their best every single day.
If you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life (other than Mexican), what would it be and why?
Japanese cuisine, without hesitation. I admire its philosophy of simplicity, precision and respect for ingredients. Every detail matters, from knife skills to presentation, and there is a constant pursuit of perfection. The balance of flavours and techniques is something I deeply respect as a chef. It is a cuisine that teaches humility because the simplest dishes often require the greatest level of skill.
Is there one signature dish at Conrad or SUSHISAMBA that best represents you as a chef, and what makes it so special to you?
If I had to choose one, I would say our Ishiyaki A5 Japanese Wagyu at SUSHISAMBA.
For me, it represents the philosophy I believe in as a chef: exceptional ingredients, technical precision and creating an experience that guests remember. The beauty of this dish is that it doesn't rely on complexity, it allows one of the world's finest ingredients to speak for itself.
As chefs, our responsibility is not to overcomplicate great products but to respect them. That is something I try to bring into every menu I create and every team I lead. ✤
WHERE ANCIENT AND MODERN MEET
Modelled as a contemporary majlis with inspiration from one of the great ancient cities, Liz O’Reilly found that Ninive, the new dining destination at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, offers the best of both worlds.
The new outlet is reached through the property’s gorgeous gardens and, arriving in the evening, we were treated to the full spectacle of a design drawn from Mesopotamian mythology and Bedouin architecture, glowing in the light of brass lanterns almost like an ancient desert encampment. We’d arrived hungry and, quickly seated on the expansive terrace, we immediately dived into the menu, which is an inviting mix of favourites from across the Middle East and North Africa. Classic flavours that are right at home in this setting.
Deciding to take the recommendations of the helpful serving team, before we knew it our appetisers started to arrive, one after another until the table was a delightful tableau of riotous colours and delicious aromas.
First up, Quinoa Tabbouleh with spiced mango brought a modern touch to a traditional staple, and I loved the twist. The bright herbaceous acidity of the parsley and mint were perfectly balanced by the mild earthiness of the quinoa, while the punchy mango transformed a regular dish into something much more interesting and special.
Zaalouk, a sharing favourite at every Moroccan table, proved equally as enticing to us. Grilled eggplant, roasted paprika, shallots and tomatoes all slow-cooked into a deliciously mushy, rich red paste. Deeply smoky and flavourful with a faint hint of spice, it was a dish we went back to time and again, scooping it up with chunks of hot fresh bread.
The house signature Tamarind Chicken was a definite standout, the deep sweet-tart profile of the tamarind lending itself deliciously to the charred, yoghurt-smothered chicken bites. Each mouthful was a small triumph, an exceptional combination of flavours bursting on the tongue.
Maast o Khiar brought us back into familiar territory with the muchloved Persian yoghurt dish. But, true to form, there was a little something extra in the mix. Alongside the standard cucumber and mint, Ninive’s kitchen added raisins and rosewater, giving a lovely bright sweetness alongside the rich sharpness of the yoghurt.
Almost at the end of our appetiser journey, we sampled Cheese Briwats, traditional Moroccan triangular pastries stuffed with goat cheese, walnuts and blackcurrants. Not unlike our beloved samosas, these were a winning combination of crunchy, thin dough and rich, salty cheese. The crisp sweetness of the blackcurrants and earthy nuts cut through the slight greasiness of the cheese for a mouthwatering texture and flavour combination. Last up on the starters came a dish that was new to me, but one that traces its roots back to the 10th century! Chicken Pastilla is traditionally a celebration dish, sweet and savoury and served with fanfare. Lightly spiced minced chicken comes in a casing of excellent thin, crispy dough topped with crushed sugar and cinnamon. I must admit that, to my Western palate, the idea of serving a savoury dish with sugar seemed odd. But, I love trying new (to me) things and actually this was an interesting combination. I absolutely loved the pastry, which crackled under my fork, revealing that slightly spicy interior. A taste I feel I could acquire. After the generous selection of appetisers, we took a digestive break and explored the interiors before sampling a selection of mocktails.
I have to say, the restaurant is absolutely stunning. Abundant material tenting on the ceiling gives the impression of a desert camp, while dark wood, lush green foliage and brass hanging lanterns lend an air of abundance and quiet opulence. Black and white photographs on the walls recall times past while a wellstocked bar, which includes a selection of crafted beverages, adds a contemporary twist.
There’s an imaginative mixed drinks menu and an impressive cellar but we chose to go with a few of the expertly curated mixology options. Blueberry Note came with homemade hibiscus syrup and blueberry jam – a little sweet for me but I did love the use of jam instead of puree. Lost in Paradise with its mix of Japanese green tea and passionfruit, was cool and refreshing. But the favourite for both myself and my dining companion was Kiss From A Rose, which has been created specially for ladies. Strawberry puree, cranberry juice and rose water, it was served in a Cosmo glass, looking pretty and tasting like summer. Back at our table, the first of the mains to arrive was vegetable tagine – a selection of seasonal vegetables baked in the traditional earthen tagine and served in a complex sauce created from grated zucchini, carrots, tomatoes and spices. Rich and deeply flavoursome, the sauce coated a medley of vegetables, of which I particularly enjoyed the artichokes – big, juicy and lightly smoky – and the black olives which gave a briny bite, cutting through the richness of the sauce.
The Turkish Lahmacun was another favourite. To be honest, when we saw the flatbread coming, neither of us expected very much. But, we couldn’t have been more wrong. The bread itself was paper thin and crisply blistered on the delicately charred edges yet soft and chewy further in where the juices from the meat
topping had soaked in. The topping of minced lamb was elevated with peppers, onions, tomatoes and chilli. Warmly comforting with the gentle kick of the chilli, it was a clear demonstration of why this is such a popular street food. We both said we’d go back for this dish alone.
That was true until we tasted the last of the mains and were each rendered momentarily speechless.
Tashreeb is one of the oldest dishes in Arabic cuisine and it has certainly passed the test of time. Seven-hour, slow-cooked lamb shoulder (800g of it) takes on the myriad flavours of spices, such as cardamom and cumin, as the meat braises in its own rich gravy until the flesh literally melts from the bone. Beneath, a base of msemmem bread soaks up all that joyous jus flavour for a dish that’s both slightly sweet and deeply umami. This is truly comfort in a bowl and, if you try just one thing (apart from dessert) at Ninive, this should be it.
And, so to dessert. I honestly didn’t think I could eat another thing. But when that thing looks as pretty as our final dish, it’s very hard to resist.
Now, frozen yoghurt would not usually be my choice, but when it comes with caramelised nuts, nougat and a tuile fashioned from golden crystalised honey, you have an absolute standout that has it all – tart, rich, creamy yoghurt; sweet delicate honey and chewy nuts and nougat – an absolutely perfect end to an outstanding repast. ✤
A FEAST FIT FOR CELEBRATION
Amira Ragab marked a Moroccan friend's birthday with an unforgettable evening at The Royal Marrakech, Royal Saray Resort.
The Royal Marrakech was buzzing for all the right reasons. It was my Moroccan friend's birthday, and there seemed no more fitting way to mark the occasion than an evening at this recently launched eatery, where the spirit of Morocco is brought vividly to life through both its cuisine and its hospitality. Having arrived thoroughly hungry, we wasted little time with the menu. Refreshingly concise, it offers enough variety to satisfy every appetite without becoming overwhelming, allowing the focus to remain firmly on the quality of the cooking. Our first choice from the cold mezze was the Hummus Meshawi. Smooth, velvety hummus formed the perfect base for generous strands of crisp pulled lamb, served alongside warm pita bread. The combination of creamy richness and savoury crunch made for an elegant opening that hinted at the kitchen's confidence. The hot starters raised the bar even higher. Crispy Beef with Truffle Mashed Potato proved to be one of those dishes that lingers in the memory long after the meal has finished. Crispy beef, coated in a glossy, slightly sticky glaze and sprinkled with sesame seeds, delivered both sweetness and depth, while the silky truffle mash beneath added a luxurious earthiness that tied everything together beautifully. It was easily one of the standout dishes of the evening and, quite honestly, worth returning for on its own. Looking for something more traditional, my dining companion chose the Chicken Pastilla. Wrapped in delicate Moroccan pastry, the generously seasoned pulled chicken was finished with a dusting of icing sugar and cinnamon. For someone more familiar with Eastern Arab flavours, this signature Moroccan balance
of savoury and sweet was both unexpected and captivating. Every bite revealed another layer of spice, warmth and texture, showcasing one of Morocco's most iconic culinary creations with admirable authenticity.
The main courses continued to impress. The Mushroom Rice Tagine was an unexpected revelation. Although I rarely gravitate towards vegetarian dishes, this was one I would happily order again and again. Earthy fried mushrooms rested atop fragrant rice infused with truffle, while finely chopped mushrooms throughout added depth and richness. Every mouthful was intensely satisfying without ever feeling heavy.
Equally memorable was the Traditional Vegetable Couscous Tagine, presented in the classic earthenware vessel from which it takes its name. As the lid was lifted, fragrant steam escaped, carrying aromas that instantly transported me back to Morocco. Tender carrots, aubergine, courgettes, pumpkin and white radish were arranged generously over perfectly steamed couscous, crowned with chickpeas and finished with a delicate broth that soaked beautifully into every grain. The flavours were gentle rather than overpowering, lightly spiced and subtly sweet, evoking vivid memories of my first tagine in Casablanca. Comforting, nourishing and deeply authentic, it captured everything one hopes for in traditional Moroccan cooking.
For those craving something heartier, the Slow-Roasted Mechoui Lamb Shoulder from the signatures, arrived as an unmistakable centrepiece. Served in a traditional tagine alongside roasted potatoes, tomatoes and vegetable couscous, the portion was astonishingly generous. In fact, it could easily have satisfied
our group of eight. The lamb itself was exceptional, its crisp caramelised exterior giving way to impossibly tender meat that simply fell apart at the touch of a fork. Rich, deeply flavoured and wonderfully succulent, it was the sort of dish that reminds you why slow cooking remains one of the greatest culinary techniques.
Just when we thought the evening had reached its conclusion, dessert arrived with theatrical flair. The Royal Marrakech Secret Chest is designed to make an entrance, emerging in a swirl of smoke to reveal an indulgent assortment that includes Umm Ali, Ras El Hanout-infused chocolate, crème brûlée, churros and fresh berries. Equal parts spectacle and indulgence, it provides a fitting finale to an already memorable meal.
Alongside it came a selection of traditional Moroccan sweets, each presented in elegant bite-sized portions. Every piece offered its own distinct character, from delicately floral notes to nutty richness and fragrant spices, providing the perfect opportunity to sample the breadth of Morocco's celebrated dessert traditions without overwhelming the palate.
As we cleared the last of the plates, we reflected on our evening. Throughout our visit, the energy was unmistakable. Every table seemed to share in the excitement, while the restaurant's warm interiors, intricate décor and glowing lanterns created an atmosphere that felt wonderfully transportive. The entertainment elevated the experience even further. Traditional dancers glided gracefully through the dining room with candles balanced effortlessly atop their heads, drawing admiring glances wherever they passed. Live musicians and a vocalist filled the space with authentic Moroccan melodies, creating an ambience that was lively yet never intrusive. It was the sort of setting where dinner naturally unfolds into an occasion.
The Royal Marrakech delivers far more than just a meal. It captures the warmth, generosity and convivial spirit that define Moroccan hospitality, combining authentic flavours with polished service and engaging entertainment. Whether celebrating a birthday, a football victory or simply seeking one of Bahrain's most atmospheric dining experiences, it offers an evening that feels both immersive and genuinely memorable. ✤
Liz O’Reilly and friends discovered a menu that’s both classically hearty and intriguingly modern on a visit to the recently opened Nina The Greek, in Saar. •
A TOUCH OF TRADITION, A TASTE OF INNOVATION!
The first floor of Nakheel Centre is not where I’d expect to find a new restaurant that I’m absolutely convinced is bound for stardom. But, like much else about Nina The Greek, the location proved a revelation. Once inside, you quickly forget you’re in a cute outdoor mall and are transported to somewhere altogether more cosy with a distinctly Hellenic vibe. More about that later, as one look at the menu – yes, the place actually has printed menus (praise be) – and we were convinced to dive right into the food.
It would be remiss to visit a Greek restaurant without sampling the Greek Salad – known the world over and always a reliable favourite. But Nina’s version presents a fantastic twist on the classic. It arrived at the table as a whole large, skinned palm tomato sitting in a pool of feta mousse and vibrant green, basilinfused extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Chef Hussain, both Head Chef and partner, cut into it at the table to reveal a centre stuffed with the ingredients you would expect from a Greek salad –diced tomato and cucumber mixed with pickled shallots. Add in a healthy dose of fresh oregano and pickled capers for added depth and this was a complete winner, which has left me slightly obsessed with basil olive oil – I wonder if they sell it.
Next came Melitzanosalata. But there was no boring bowl for this traditional dip, instead half a large roasted eggplant was crowned by a bed of pomegranate arils. When we dug beneath the crimson topping, the familiar gooey, smoky, garlicky flesh was there in all its velvety glory.
An orb of feta mousse was light, creamy and salty, given that little something extra by a generous topping of Greek salsa with chopped Kalamata olives, bringing their rich, fruity flavour to the mix. From the menu, you could be forgiven for thinking that Htipiti is a similar thing, since the base is also whipped feta, but the two could not be more different. This one has the addition of fire-roasted red peppers, EVOO and a hint of red grape vinegar. To one of my dining companions, for whom this dish brings memories of home, the Nina’s version brought a big smile. For me, I loved the rich depth of the flavours: lightly salty cheese coupled with the sweetness of the peppers and beautifully balanced by the heat of the chilli. This truly reminded me of the taverna dips of my youth and brought a longing to hop straight on a plane headed for the Saronic Gulf. The last of the appetisers was the Crispy Zucchini. On seeing this on the menu, I was expecting my long-time favourite, which is traditionally prepared with semolina coated zucchini slices. But, once again, Chef Hussain Abusaqer had a surprise in store. Long strips of the vegetable (yes, we know it’s technically a fruit) came in a delicious, crispy tempura batter that preserved the crunch long after it had left the pan. It was served with Greek yoghurt and goat cheese dip surrounded by house-made balsamic and red chilli. Light heat, serious crunch and rich cheesiness, what’s not to like?
As we waited for the mains, I took some time to speak with founder and owner Nina Chanel, and learnt that the interiors and furnishings are bespoke, with wooden chairs and deep, comfy banquettes created by Bahraini multidisciplinary creatives 8/23 Design Studio, who’re in the process of whipping up seating for the soon-to-open outside terrace. The walls are classic white, covered in murals of that particular Grecian blue, painted by
Bahrain-based, international artist Yana Dimitrova, created specially for the restaurant and featuring scenes from Nina’s own life and the inspiration behind the concept. Look closely and you’ll spot her with her three dogs. The overall effect is charming. Bright and airy but also welcoming and somehow cosy. It was easy to see why, even on a late afternoon, there were other large tables happily enjoying this comforting blend of hospitality.
Soon our mains began to arrive and I couldn’t wait to tuck into the Catch of the Day – 800g of fresh pan-seared seabass in a bright, aromatic citrus sauce with red and yellow drop peppers, basil oil, sun-dried tomato oil and charred lemon. This was sublime. The fish was flaky and flavoursome, the sauce simply tasted like more and the skin, which so often lets a great fish dish down, was delicately crispy finished with sherry vinegar and Maldon salt for a satisfying crunch.
The Mushroom Short Ribs were another triumph. Deeply gamey beef, slow cooked in a dark, rich mushroom jus until the meat fell apart at the merest touch of the fork, served with a totally sinful potato puree that tasted like at least 50% butter! I am a potato snob and this mash totally hit the sweet spot for me.
Supreme Lemonato consisted of a brined, corn-fed chicken breast served with lemon roasted potatoes with tomatoes and herbs, basil oil and a reduction of chicken jus. The chicken’s outer skin was charred and crispy, leading to succulent, tender flesh with a bright acidity that lingered in the mouth.
We also had Bahraini clams in lemon herb sauce which were a surprise to me as they were briny yet slightly sweet, without a hint of rubberiness, just a satisfying mouthful that I was happy to go back to several times – quite something since I usually avoid shellfish. Chef Hussain said the secret is “red wine vinegar sauce, chives and a bit of magic!” and I totally believe him.
We took a short break for drinks – two delicious mocktails that I urge you to try for yourself, particularly the strawberry one that tasted like a really, really good slushie. Then it was time for desserts. The lemon sorbet was like a taste of summer, light and fresh, for a little twist, served on a bed of Granny Smith apples. The homemade vanilla ice cream came with a crunchy butter tuile for added texture and the chocolate mousse was a total star. Light and airy but at the same time deeply chocolatey thanks to the use of 70% Valrhona chocolate and extra virgin olive oil. A touch of salt in the construction added to the intrigue and depth of flavour and it disappeared almost indecently quickly.
The pièce de résistance though, was the De-constructed Baklava, which I can honestly say was one of the best desserts I’ve tasted in a long time. Greek yoghurt was whipped with vanilla cream for sweetness, pistachio praline brought rich nutty depth, while the crunchy filo layers crackled satisfyingly under the spoon. Our whole party was suitably impressed and I will definitely be going back for another portion (I want the whole thing to myself!).
I hope I’ve convinced you to take a trip to Nina’s – there’s a very strong chance you’ll find me there. ✤
FINDING THE HEART OF THE MALDIVES
The fact team travelled to NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort, where heartfelt hospitality, delightful dining and thoughtful touches transformed an idyllic island escape into something truly special.
There is a special silence when the Maldives first comes into view. From above, the ocean shifts through shades of blue that seem almost unreal, while small green islands appear scattered across the water with theatrical precision.
Our destination was NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort, set on the natural island of Fonimagoodhoo in Baa Atoll. Recently reimagined, the resort felt fresh and contemporary while allowing the island to remain the star. Tropical greenery, soft sand and crystal-clear lagoon waters framed our arrival, and check-in was handled with the calm efficiency every traveller dreams of.
A Room With a View and Then Some
Our Sunset Beach Villas with Pools quickly became our private retreats. They offered generous space, king-sized beds, living areas, espresso machines, Bluetooth speakers and bathrooms with separate tubs and rain showers. Best of all, sliding doors opened onto sundecks and plunge pools, beach and ocean just beyond. They were the sort of rooms where shoes were quickly forgotten and emails felt like somebody else’s problem.
The design balanced earthy textures, soft colours and natural materials, creating comfort without fuss. Although we stayed in this villa category, the resort also featured beach villas, twobedroom family options, 30 overwater villas and the expansive Two-Bedroom Reethi Suite, giving couples, families and groups plenty of ways to experience the island. With 135 villas in total, the resort felt intimate rather than sprawling.
The wider property carried the same understated confidence. Villas either hugged the shoreline or sat within lush greenery, while thoughtful sustainability initiatives reflected a resort that respects its remarkable surroundings.
Settling Into Paradise
Lunch at Jumla introduced us to the resort's dining style. A delicious tuna curry made an immediate impression, while seasonal dishes, international favourites, Mediterranean flavours, Indian cuisine and Maldivian seafood reflected the breadth of the menu. It wasn't long before breakfast there became part of our daily routine.
It was also where one of our many memorable service moments happened. On the first day, we ordered a coffee with several very specific instructions. When we returned on the third day for our next cup, the lady who had served us remembered every detail without us repeating it. No reminder. Just the correct coffee arriving with a smile. That tiny moment perfectly captured the attentive service we experienced throughout our stay.
Later, Dolphin Quest took us out across clear waters in search of the island's most playful neighbours. They soon appeared beside the boat, gliding and leaping through the wake with the confidence of performers who knew exactly how good they were. Phones came out quickly, but before long we simply sat and watched the spectacle unfold.
An Appetite for Adventure
Dinner at Caravela became one of the defining moments of our stay. With just 12 seats, the resort's intimate fine-dining restaurant immediately hinted at something rather special.
The evening unfolded as The Atlantic Voyage – a thoughtfully curated tasting menu inspired by the Age of Discovery. Each course celebrated the flavours and stories born from ancient trade routes and bold maritime exploration, transforming dinner into a culinary journey rather than simply a meal.
Impeccable silver service added another layer of refinement without ever feeling overly formal, while carefully selected grape pairings elevated the experience even further. Conversation frequently paused, first in admiration of each beautifully presented course and then again as everyone quietly savoured the flavours.
By the time dessert arrived, in the form of a beautifully prepared Olive Cake, we realised Caravela had achieved something quite special. It hadn't simply served dinner; it had created one of those evenings that guests continue talking about long after they return home.
The Rhythm of the Island
The following morning began with breakfast at Jumla where, alongside an extensive international selection, we sampled Mas Huni, one of the Maldives' most beloved traditional breakfast dishes. Combining tuna, freshly grated coconut, onion, lime and chilli, it was zesty, vibrant and offered a delicious glimpse into local cuisine.
Shortly after, we explored the calm lagoon by kayak and stand up paddleboard. From the water, the resort looked settled into the landscape, with villas tucked between palms and the shoreline curving gently behind them. It was active, but not aggressively so, which is exactly our preferred level of athleticism on a Maldivian island.
Lunch at Madumaithiri, the adults-only beach bar by the pool, suited the afternoon perfectly. Wood-fired pizzas, generous burgers, wraps and colourful salads made it a relaxed, sociable stop before the afternoon quietly disappeared. We had planned a short rest. The Maldives disagreed. Two hours vanished far too quickly.
That evening, Handhuvaru gave us a livelier change of scene. The mixology class introduced us to the resort's special drink-themed concept, including a distinctive distilled beverage aged beneath the ocean. Guided by the resident expert, we learnt, tasted and attempted to mix our own drinks. Fortunately, enthusiasm counted for almost as much as technique.
Dinner at Kaiyo brought us another memorable evening of vibrant Asian flavours. Throughout the meal, we shared plates of sushi, bao buns, satay and spring rolls in the kind of relaxed atmosphere where laughter came easily, and no one wanted to be anywhere else.
Where Time Stood Still
By Sunday, the resort had worked its quiet magic. Breakfast at Jumla was followed by a treatment at REVIVE Spa & Wellness, a tranquil sanctuary surrounded by tropical greenery.
Our 60-minute massage drew on natural local remedies and was tailored with genuine care. Every treatment reflected the same thoughtful attention we experienced throughout the resort, leaving us lighter, calmer and slightly hesitant about returning to normal life.
After lunch at Jumla, the afternoon drifted by before we made our way to Atardecer, positioned at the westernmost point of the island, for evening drinks and tapas. As the sky shifted through gold, pink and violet, the mellow DJ soundtrack and relaxed setting created one of the most atmospheric moments of the trip. The chatter around the table gradually gave way to quiet appreciation as the sunset stole everyone's attention.
A Feast Beneath the Stars
Our final dinner was the resort's signature Adrift experience at Alifaan, providing the perfect finale to our stay. In an intimate beachfront setting beneath the evening sky, the seaside barbecue celebrated the finest land and sea ingredients. Freshly grilled fish, premium cuts of meat, abundant seafood and beautifully prepared seasonal vegetables arrived straight from the open fire, allowing the freshness and quality to speak for themselves. It was hearty, generous and every bit as memorable as the setting itself.
As the waves rolled gently onto the shore and conversation lingered long after dinner had ended, we found ourselves
reluctant for the evening to end. It was a fitting conclusion to our stay, bringing together exceptional food, impeccable service and the effortless beauty of the Maldives.
The Heart Behind the Hospitality
Beyond the experiences we enjoyed firsthand, the resort offers diving, water sports, family facilities, fitness spaces, dedicated children's areas and countless peaceful corners for those happy to simply embrace island life.
Still, what defined our stay was the service. Every interaction felt sincere and effortlessly personal. Staff were attentive without hovering, warm without feeling rehearsed and professional without losing personality. On our departure day, we returned to our villas to find farewell messages arranged on the beds, wishing us well and hoping to see us again soon.
It was simple, thoughtful and entirely in keeping with our stay. When we left NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort and began our journey back home, we carried memories of beautiful villas, unforgettable meals, dolphins, sunsets and warm lagoon waters. Yet what stayed with us most was the people. In a destination blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, this resort reminded us that the moments guests remember longest are often the ones created through genuine care.
AN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST
Inspired by nature, talented Bahraini artist and Founder of D'Art Gallery, Deena Radhi expresses her creativity through bold brushwork and vibrant hues. Apple Sharma caught up with her to explore her distinctive style, the spark behind her art and the destination at the top of her painting bucket list!
fact: Can you tell us about your journey and evolution as an artist?
DR: My journey as an artist started as therapy without me realising it. I painted to express emotions I couldn’t explain out loud. What began as a private escape slowly turned into exhibitions, collectors and building D’Art Gallery, an online platform where I turn people’s ideas into original, customised paintings. Over time, my work shifted from detailed figurative pieces to more expressive, emotional art inspired by nature. I’ve learnt to trust my instincts more and plan less. As I’ve grown in life and business, my art has grown with me. Every chapter leaves its mark on my canvas.
fact: How would you describe your artistic style, and what makes it uniquely yours?
DR: I would describe my style as expressive, bold and emotionally driven. I love strong brushstrokes, rich textures and colours that feel alive. Even when I paint recognisable subjects, there’s always movement and softness that lean towards abstraction. Nature inspires me constantly, especially the sea, florals, birds and meaningful symbols. What makes it unique is that I don’t overthink. I paint intuitively and let emotion lead the way. Each piece carries my energy from that moment in time. It’s less about perfection and more about feeling. I want people to connect emotionally before understanding it.
fact: Where do you find inspiration for your work, and what usually sparks the beginning of a new piece?
DR: Inspiration finds me everywhere, especially near the sea. Sunrises, changing skies, quiet mornings and deep conversations often spark ideas. Sometimes it’s simply a colour combination that excites me. I rarely begin with a strict plan.
Instead, I begin with a feeling. I place the first brushstroke down and trust the process. From there, the painting grows naturally, almost like it’s guiding me instead of the other way around. It becomes a conversation between me and the canvas. I allow mistakes, surprises and spontaneous decisions. That freedom keeps the work alive and authentic.
fact: You work across a variety of mediums – from oil and acrylic to charcoal. Do you have a personal favourite, and why?
DR: Acrylic is definitely my favourite because it matches my personality. It’s fast, flexible and allows me to layer and experiment freely. I enjoy building textures and seeing immediate results. Oil paint feels luxurious and soft, perfect for adding depth and elegance to certain works. Charcoal is completely different; it feels raw, simple and powerful. It removes distraction and focusses purely on emotion and form. Each medium has its own mood, and I choose based on what the artwork needs. I love having options because different stories require different voices and materials.
fact: For commissioned pieces, how do you bring someone else's vision to life while staying true to your own signature style?
DR: Creating commissioned pieces feels like a creative partnership. I start by listening carefully to understand the client’s space, vision and emotional connection to the artwork. I ask what they want to feel when they look at it every day. Then I translate their ideas through my own expressive style. I never copy or recreate previous works. Instead, I reinterpret their vision using my brushwork, textures and colour choices. That balance is important to me. The final piece reflects their personality while still carrying my artistic signature. It becomes something unique and meaningful.
fact: Is there a particular artwork that holds special meaning for you, and what is the story behind it?
DR: My solo exhibition, The Sea, will always hold a special place in my heart. The ocean represents both strength and calmness in my life. During a challenging period, I kept painting horizons and endless layers of blue. It felt healing, almost like meditation. Each painting reflected resilience beneath a peaceful surface. That collection helped me grow emotionally and artistically. It reminded me why I started painting in the first place. Sometimes art speaks when words cannot. The Sea gave me confidence, clarity and a deeper understanding of my creative voice and purpose.
fact: Looking ahead, what's next for you? Are there any exciting projects, exhibitions or creative goals you're looking forward to?
DR: I’m excited about what’s ahead. I plan to continue growing D’Art Gallery and helping more people turn their ideas into meaningful artwork. Expanding internationally is definitely on my vision board. Artistically, I’m exploring larger canvases, deeper textures and more abstract compositions. I want to push myself creatively and experiment with mixed media and immersive experiences. Growth keeps me inspired. My goal is not only to create beautiful paintings but to create emotional experiences. I want people to feel something powerful when they stand in front of my work. ✤

NOSTALGIA MEETS CRAFT
The latest collection from COS explores the language of cinematic beauty, each piece reflecting a balance of 1980s and ‘90s nostalgia, showcased through silhouettes shaped by craftsmanship, context and precise tailoring.
The season’s new line was revealed in Korea with 40 distinctive looks, featuring a palette of slate greys, warm browns, creams and whites, establishing tonal harmony and a sense of understated uniformity.
Accents of blue and deep oxblood offer richness and depth for timeless head-to-toe looks.
Leather and technical fabrications carry a subtle sheen, emphasising intentional drape and sculptural form; paper-like surfaces introduce crinkled tactility; while linen melanges add textural depth.
In womenswear, a distilled simplicity reminiscent of ’90s minimalism is softened by fine, sheer ribbed knits across dresses and coordinating styles, while strong shoulders introduce a subtle nod to 1980s power dressing. Signature tailoring is reimagined through fluid fabrics and controlled draping, as trompe l’oeil denim, rendered in silk, offers a modern interpretation of set dressing.
Silk recurs throughout the collection: softly pleated in the atelier, sculpted into an off-shoulder gown, and expressed through a signature shirt conveying precision and ease. Material manipulation appears in softly gathered looks, while transitional outerwear creates a contrast between classicism and modernity.
The whole collection is completed with wardrobe icons reimagined through the COS lens, including supple leather plimsolls, architecturally heeled mules and bags crafted in complementing fabrics.
In menswear, transitional outerwear evokes a sense of modern heritage, while relaxed tailoring, cut in slimmer silhouettes, captures skilful construction. Pared-back utility references emerge through functional detailing, while tonal ensembles inspired by ’80s styling offer a fresh interpretation of the contemporary uniform. Suede introduces a quiet yet assured sense of luxury to warm-weather dressing.
Accessories finish the looks with timeless soft leather sandals and effortless loafers – classic designs subtly reimagined with a modern twist. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About?
The Really Beautiful Game
There were a lot of not so nice stories out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 – we’re not going there – but we love this little gem. With teams from across the globe heading to the USA, Canada and Mexico, it’s no surprise that players often found themselves based in smaller towns that most of us have never heard of. One such spot was university town Lawrence, Kansas, which hosted the Algerian team. Now, with the US’s own footie players also competing, one could be forgiven for expecting the welcome to be somewhat lukewarm, but Lawrence went all out to make the Desert Foxes feel at home.
The city was awash with green jerseys; residents, local libraries and university groups organised French and Arabic language classes, cultural events and watch parties; local artist Stan Herd created a giant landscape Algerian flag on campus; and the University of Kansas Band learnt to play the Algerian national anthem. In return, the players conducted kickabouts and interacted with local residents.
Dare we say, there were plenty of others throughout the tournament who could learn a thing or two from Lawrence and the Algerians!
Yodel Warming
The headline’s not a mistake, just us being a bit silly about a story we came across on AP News.
In Basel, Switzerland, Europe’s ongoing heatwave took a toll on some of the performers at the Eidgenössisches
Jodlerfest, Switzerland’s national yodelling festival, that attracts around 200,000 visitors annually.
It was the first time the town had hosted the contest, and singers and alphorn players filled the streets with music, to the delight of diners and passing tourists. But, with temperatures heading towards 40 degrees, a somewhat rarer sight was
spotted at one of the town’s fountains, where some musicians took to the water to cool off.
It must have been quite a sight to witness singers in their traditional Alpine folk costumes splashing about in the cooling waters – we hope they even gave an impromptu performance for the gathered crowds.
But, amusing though it might be, the spectacle, along with the record temperatures currently being witnessed across Europe, does make us concerned for an ever warmer planet – especially since our part of the world really can’t get much hotter without spontaneously combusting!
Rough Justice
With Batman off our screens for more than four years, it seems the Caped Crusader may have gotten a little bored and fled south of the border, where he’s giving alleged motorbike thieves a taste of instant and, somewhat rough, justice.
The masked vigilante, who’s been dubbed Mexico’s Batman, apparently frustrated by a lack of police action on a spate of motorcycle thefts, has taken the law into his own hands. Alleged thieves have been turning up in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, bound to lampposts with duct tape, the stolen bikes
propped up nearby.
Reports say some of the thieves have received a bit of a beating, while others have been daubed with the words thief or rat across their foreheads.
Not surprisingly, local law enforcement officials have condemned the crusader’s actions – particularly the alleged assaults – but the Mexican Batman has gained overwhelming public support.
And, considering he also draws moustaches and cat’s whiskers on his ‘victims’, he’s obviously got a sense of humour. Honest and funny, a winning package.
