icture this: you’re already stretching every dollar to keep your family fed, and then your dog’s food bowl comes up empty, too. For hundreds of families in Escambia County, that’s not a hypothetical — it’s Tuesday. And it’s exactly the gap Jo Jo’s Paws was built to fill. This scrappy little pet food pantry, tucked inside the Escambia County Animal Welfare and Adoption Center, had a very big year in 2025. We’re talking 43,828 pounds of pet food, big. That’s roughly the weight of a school bus, distributed one bag of kibble at a time to families who needed a little help so they didn’t have to choose between their own dinner and their pet’s. The numbers tell a quietly remarkable story: an average of 236 families helped every single month, and more than 13,000 pets kept in their homes — not surrendered, not left behind — over the course of the year. “No one should have to choose between caring for themselves and caring for their pets,” says Jo Jo’s Paws Director and Founder Patti Roberts. That “keep families together” mission is exactly why Escambia County Animal Welfare decided to bring Jo Jo’s Paws in-house rather than just cheer from the sidelines. “I’ve always said we can’t do what we do without the support of our community, and Jo Jo’s Paws is further proof of that,” says Escambia County Animal Welfare Director John Robinson. “Partnering with Jo Jo’s Paws was an easy yes for us.” It’s the kind of partnership that makes a lot of sense once you think about it: a shelter’s whole job is to find pets safe homes, so why not help pets stay in the safe homes they already have? Every bag of dog food that goes out the pantry door is, in a very real sense, one less intake at the shelter — a win for the pet, the family, and an already-stretched animal welfare system. So, what does the pantry actually offer? 19
Beyond the free cat and dog food (wet or dry), Jo Jo’s Paws stocks treats, collars, leashes, pet beds, blankets, kitty litter, and even the occasional pet jacket for chilly nights. It’s open to Escambia County residents with a valid driver’s license — though Patti notes exceptions can be made depending on circumstances and available donations, because compassion doesn’t always come with a strict ID check. Want to help? Here’s the scoop: When: The pantry itself is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop off donations: Escambia County Animal Welfare, 200 W. Fairfield Drive — Monday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Most needed: Cat and dog food (wet or dry), pet treats, and 1-gallon or larger resealable storage bags. ara Greco never planned on the Air Force. In fact, when her father — a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel — once asked her and her sister if they’d ever consider joining, both girls answered “No!” in unison, so decisively that he never brought it up again. Fast forward to Sara’s sophomore year of college. She was feeling a little lost, a little bored, and searching for direction. A chance connection changed everything: one of only two students commuting to Air Force ROTC training happened to live on Sara’s residence hall floor. The two started talking, Sara started tagging along to training, and not long after, she signed up for ROTC herself. It was, she says, one of the hardest decisions she’s ever made — and also one of the best. Today, Sara serves in the Air Force Reserve as a Public Affairs officer, a role that’s given her a front-row seat to leadership in action. “I’ve experienced just about every leadership style you can imagine,” she says, “servant leadership, transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and everything in between.” What she’s taken from watching senior leaders navigate hard moments is simple but powerful: there’s no single “right” way to lead. Great leadership, she says, comes from understanding who you are, leading with intention, and adapting to the people around you. What Sara loves most about the Reserve is the flexibility it offers — the chance to “choose her own adventure,” leaning into military service during some seasons and civilian priorities during others. That balance has allowed her to build something entirely her own: Lead Into It, LLC, a leadership coaching business she founded to help people grow into better leaders, and by extension, better spouses, parents, and neighbors. 27

Her mission, as she puts it, is refreshingly human. Leadership isn’t just about workplace productivity — it ripples outward. A hard day caused by a difficult manager can follow someone home, showing up as shortened patience with a spouse or less energy for the kids. Sara believes that if more people felt supported and valued at work, that goodwill would carry into homes and communities too. It’s a big, hopeful vision, and she’s the first to laugh at how lofty it sounds — but she means every word of it. Ask Sara about her proudest achievement, and she won’t point to a medal or a title. Instead, she’ll tell you about resilience — about the rejections and redirections she’s faced throughout her life, from a college that said no to jobs she didn’t get. “Those moments still hurt,” she admits. “I cry about it for a little bit, I let myself be disappointed, and

then I figure out what’s next.” What she’s proudest of isn’t avoiding those closed doors, but refusing to let them define her. Outside her military and coaching work, Sara stays rooted in her community along the Emerald Coast. She’s spent years volunteering with sea turtle conservation at the Gulfarium’s CARE Center and now serves with Women United at United Way Emerald Coast, supporting honest conversations about mental health among women and girls. At the heart of it all, Sara says, is people — helping them grow, connecting with them, and leaving them a little better than she found them. Whether she’s in uniform, coaching a client, or volunteering on a Saturday morning, that’s the thread that ties her service together: showing up, again and again, for something bigger than herself.
