NOTE

t’s that time of year when there is a subtle change here on the East Coast. The summer heat softens, the days settle into a cooler rhythm, and time outdoors transforms as the way we experience Umhlanga and the greater North Coast begins to shift. Mornings on the promenade, or on the beach, feel a little more comfortable, coffee stretches a bit longer, and there’s a natural rhythm that settles in without needing to force it.

This edition leans into this, and as we put it together, what stood out wasn’t just how much is happening around Umhlanga at the moment, but how naturally it all fits into the rhythm of everyday life here. It’s about how we embrace the long weekends, the run of public holidays, and the events across the city – none of which feel like disruptions – but rather extensions of how we already live here, giving us a myriad of opportunities to step out, connect, and make the most of what’s around us.

I love that this balance shows up in the stories in this issue. Our stretch of coastline offers an exceptional standard of food with world-class restaurants across different settings, all delivering consistently high quality. On one end, you have experiences like The Chefs’ Table, where precision and detail define the meal. Shift the setting slightly north to Umdloti, and the same standard carries through in a more relaxed, seaside environment. The experience changes, but what arrives at your table does not. That consistency is not accidental. It’s a defining strength of the

area and speaks to the variety we get to enjoy. There is also a noticeable pull toward the outdoors. Not in a radical way, but in small, consistent choices. Camping trips, time in open spaces, and places like The Farmacy where things are a little less structured and more present. It’s a reminder that the lifestyle here isn’t built on a single concept, but on the ability to move between different ways of living without needing to overthink it.

What also stands out at this time of year is how shared spaces come alive. The promenade, the beaches, the restaurants, and the many events that fill the April and May calendar all become part of how we experience this stretch of the coast. It’s not a place that slows down as winter approaches; it simply adapts. The energy shifts, the pace changes slightly, but the lifestyle remains, offering just as much, if not more, just differently.

Putting this edition together, that’s what comes through most clearly. It’s not one defining story, but a collection of moments that reflect a place in motion, with each season bringing its own way of experiencing it.

I hope you enjoy the read, and I look forward to chatting in the next edition.

Under “Sonny” Skies

We struggle to find the words that accurately describe what we feel or experience. Yet a picture can capture it all. While sitting on a plane back to South Africa from New Zealand, I find the last three weeks hard to put into words. So cast your eyes to the picture above – Sonny (my grandson), with his two friends in a small church community garden on Great Barrier Island – and I will try.

This garden is open to all and grows food for those in need. As I scanned the garden, I realised my grandson was growing, too. What I experienced there was a deep love and respect for the land. It made me ask, “What will I leave behind? Could I make small adjustments when returning to South Africa?”

I was so enjoying being in the moment with Sonny, that I didn’t think about what happens after the moment. Now I want to value both: the present moment and what grows from it. What “nutrients” do I need to grow in my heart to instil hope in my grandchildren? Where does my treasure really lie? Not what I let others see, but in the hidden places of my heart. Just like we can’t witness a seed growing under the soil, so my heart’s garden isn’t for others to see but for my own growth.

Interacting with a three-year-old challenged what I do when no one is looking. Was it his sincere curiosity that highlighted my stale heart? Was it the innocent way his eyes smiled when I gave him my full attention, or the way adventure was always available to anyone who joined his play?

082 922 5497

His courage to say “not now” or “I don’t want to” highlighted my own people pleasing. His endless why questions about trees and insects reminded me of my love for God’s creation. His trust that Mummy and Daddy would meet his needs highlighted my worries about things I don’t need to try to control. Even his simple awareness of being hungry – or saying “I had enough” – showed me how far I had drifted from my natural rhythms.

Something slowly shifted. It moved from “What should I do?” to “What could I do?” Could my actions really make a difference?

How fitting that as I complete this article, I take out the book I bought in a small bookshop in Auckland called The Book of Joy and am captured by the first page: “No dark fate determines the future. We do. Each day and each moment, we are able to create and recreate our lives and the very quality of human life on our planet.”

Just like we can’t witness a seed growing under the soil, so my heart’s garden isn’t for others to see but for my own growth

Wholesome

Farmyard Whimsy

The Farmacy combines a petting zoo, outdoor play and healthy dining in a peaceful forest setting.

Tucked away between the trees behind Bellamont Stables in Umdloti, where birdsong carries through the branches and the wind rustles softly through the leaves, a new kind of family outing has taken shape. Easter weekend marked the official opening of The Farmacy, a charming petting zoo and restaurant that celebrates outdoor living and kindness. It is the kind of place where children are encouraged to get their hands dirty and let their imaginations run wild. At the heart of The

Farmacy is a thoughtfully designed play area featuring a massive custom-made jungle gym, complete with a mud kitchen for creative play and a push-bike racing track for energetic young riders. But the real stars of the show are the animals.

Owner Tania Krenski happily introduces visitors to the resident characters who bring the little farm to life. Charley, the miniature donkey, is usually the first to greet guests, ambling over to the fence with

WORDS JACQUELINE HERBST

curious friendliness. Nearby live the “Fella Bellas” – Paintbrush and Toothbrush – two miniature horses in their twenties representing one of the smallest horse breeds in the world. Amongst the most endearing residents are the Nigerian dwarf goats. Maggie and her twin babies, Phoebe and Boi Jack, have already become firm favourites with visitors. The twins are easy to tell apart thanks to their collars, pink for Phoebe and blue for Boi Jack, and their playful personalities make them difficult to leave. The feathered residents are just as entertaining. The “Gucci Clan”, a group of four chickens named after famous female fashion designers, not only delight guests but also contributes to the kitchen, supplying many of the eggs used in the restaurant.

In the duck enclosures, Indian Runner ducks recently welcomed a clutch of chicks, although one was rejected by its mother and is now

being hand-reared by Krenski and her team. Appropriately named “Waddles” for his penguin-like walk, he has already stolen many hearts.

Khaki Campbell ducks, a British breed known for their productivity, have hatched an impressive 26 chicks so far (all have been sold), while nearby call ducks display their distinctive bright blue markings. A shy Mandarin duck occupies the final enclosure before the rescue and nursery area, where visitors meet Baggins and George, two enormous Flemish Giant rabbits. Rescue chickens roam nearby, including a curious hen named “Nando’s”, who seems determined to inspect every visitor. Dexter the rooster, hand-reared from a chick, is famously affectionate; happily lying on his back for a gentle tummy tickle.

Sustainability is central to the venue’s design. The restaurant and two viewing decks were built almost entirely from salvaged materials, significantly reducing the project’s carbon footprint. The sunrise deck offers sweeping views across La Mercy Lagoon and out to sea, making it an ideal early-morning coffee stop for mountain bikers and sunrise seekers. The sunset deck, overlooking the sugar cane fields to the west, will soon host relaxed sunset sessions with live music and harvest table dinners.

The menu reflects the venue’s wholesome ethos, inspired by Donna Hay’s Sunshine, Lemons & Sea Salt. Expect unique, nourishing dishes designed to encourage guests to slow down and savour the moment, including granola home-made from scratch. Krenski also hosts intimate parties and supper clubs for up to 50 guests, adding another layer of community to the space.

Warm, welcoming and full of small wonders, The Farmacy offers something increasingly rare: a place to pause, breathe deeply and rediscover the quiet magic of nature.

TUNE IN, 031!

Here are some of your favourite artists who are making Umhlanga a beacon for healing and pure merriment.

Sound & Inspirations

Although their family moved to Centurion when they were five years old, their story began right here in Umhlanga Rocks. For years, Lu-Zer was a "wallflower", paralysed by stage fright while producing in their bedroom. “I only found my confidence in adulthood; singing for friends and eventually testing my voice at local karaoke spots.” The turning point was winning the Lady of the House SA demo competition. It was the ultimate validation that their childhood dreams were worth the wait and that their sound was ready for a global stage.

Shows & Festivals

Lu-Zer’s sound is a genre-bending experiment that bridges alternative, trip-hop, and jazz, layered with raw rock textures and African soul. “I grew up on my parents’ favourites, specifically the textures of artists like Zamajobe; my debut single, ‘Ndawo Yami’, is an interpolation of my work and a tribute to my late mother, Mimmie Rose.” They frequent local jazz gigs, drawn to how organic sounds blend into atmospheric beats. The Umhlanga coastline remains their sanctuary; the beach is where they breathe and meditate, and you will be able to hear that breathwork in some of their upcoming music.

Lu-Zer recently had their first live performance on eNCA after an interview in December, and they frequently shared their voice during improv jazz sessions at That Tuesday Funk in Jo’burg. Locally, they’re manifesting a solo showcase with Mamakashaka’s “The Listening Party” and sets at Rocking the Daisies, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, the SunBet Arena and many more. Once their music is officially out, they have their sights set on some international locations, too.

What’s

Next?

“I’m currently working on my upcoming EP, introducing it through intentional singles first. As a video producer, the visual treatments for this project are just as vital as the audio; each release is strategically aligned to tell a cohesive story through the marriage of film and sound. I'm excited to share my vision with the world, sonically and visually.”

LUZER

PHOTO GEORGE Q

At 19, while au-pairing in Europe, Tatum followed her dream of travelling. After buying her first ukulele in Italy, she started busking on the streets of Modena to support her travels. That small step allowed her to fund her solo adventures, and taught her something profound: music has a unique power to connect, tell stories, and heal. When she came back, while studying and working as a bartender for Big Night Out Productions, her friend connected her with their event organiser, Rowan Clelland. “He believed in me and gave me the chance to perform on stage as an opening artist for one of his events, my very first live performance at the Gin & Tonic Festival at Chris Saunders Park!”

TATUM TIDES

Tatum’s love for music runs deep: “I would sing in my bedroom, with my bird perched on my shoulder, and play hundreds of melodies and songs, on my out-of-tune piano and rusty guitar strings, never imagining they would see the light of day.”

Sound & Inspirations

“I believe my sound is universal and meant to be experienced rather than explained. I would say it has an Indie Afro-folk feel.” She explains, “A friend of mine described my music as sounding like the word marmoris – a Latin term referring to the shimmering surface of the sea.”

“I’ve grown up with my dad as a jazz musician and saxophonist, and my mama constantly had the radio playing in the background, playing Mango Groove, Johnny Clegg, Lira, Cher, Lana Del Rey, Miriam Makeba, Mumford & Sons … and I had a major crush on Enrique Iglesias!”

“There’s something incredibly special about our multicultural community; vibrant, welcoming, and openhearted, which has given me the freedom to grow and express my unique style in my music,” she says. Even if there are multiple spoken languages, music is the language that brings everyone together!

Shows & Festivals

Most recently, she joined the Dreaming Out Loud Tour with Neon Dreams, Booshle G, Ross Learmonth, and Majozi, and also toured with Billy Raffoul in 2025. A firm favourite is the Splashy Fen Festival, and then opening for South African artists such as Matthew Mole, Jeremy Loops, and The Parlotones.

What’s Next?

A music video and short film inspired by her song, “Umama”, in collaboration with Thandeka and Lihle Sokhulu, filmed by Calvin Thompson and Timothy Hay. Tatum also released a song called “Honey,” a collaboration with Booshle G and international artist Billy Raffoul, with whom she will tour again until 11 April 2026, and most importantly, she’s in the process of recording a full debut album – a milestone she’s been dreaming of for years and cannot wait to share.

Cam White’s connection to music has always felt instinctive. By 12, he had discovered DJing, and after months of convincing his dad to help him buy his first entry-level controller, he immersed himself completely. A year later, he performed at his first outdoor event in Durban, a defining moment that marked the true beginning of his journey into dance music. “Umhlanga was where I began my journey of performing at 13. My first ever performances took place at spots like Chris Saunders Park, the Wavehouse and even The Crescent rooftop parking for events back in the day, such as Grom Events and Party in the Park.” Beyond that, Cam has fond memories of meeting many of his idols in Umhlanga, even being blessed enough to meet Hardwell at his I AM HARDWELL tour at the Wavehouse during his twoyear stint as DJ Mag’s #1 DJ in the world.

Sound & Inspirations

Inspired early on by global EDM heavyweights like Hardwell and Martin Garrix, he developed an ear for intensity and powerful drops. Yet, his musical identity was equally shaped by local rhythms: “Growing up surrounded by Maskandi, Kwaito and traditional Zulu music, I absorbed the depth of local culture from a young age.” Over time, these influences fused naturally, leading him to the hard-hitting, percussive world of Gqom, where international energy meets Durban roots.

Shows & Festivals

Having performed at many of Durban’s top venues and festivals across KZN, Cam approaches every crowd with the same intensity. With ambitions set on Ballito Big Week, Amstel & Friends, ULTRA South Africa and beyond, his sights are firmly on international recognition.

What’s Next?

After returning to DJing a few years ago, Cam worked hard to return to Umhlanga, securing performances at venues such as Rockets Beach Club and other surrounding spots. “This year, my focus is on elevating the live experience and releasing my debut EP in July, a carefully crafted project featuring powerful local collaborations, signed under the Amagogogo Sounds label as one of their artists under the guidance of Que and his team. Grateful for the growth and support so far, my message is simple: this is only the beginning.”

CAMERON

WHITE

TIM LEWIS to is

Tim was born and raised in a musical family in Pietermaritzburg. “In 2006, like most 10-year-old kids, I asked for an Xbox for Christmas, but I got a saxophone, which I was much happier about and can never thank my parents enough.” In the afternoons, while everyone was at sports practice, he would either be practising the saxophone, the drums, or learning to produce music on FL Studio. He was also part of the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band. He travelled to Germany, China, Mauritius, and played at Carnegie Hall in New York with them. Tim’s career started in 2016 after he left university to pursue music full-time. Over the next four years, he teamed up with various DJs such as Amigo Santana and Ryan Stylz, and played private events and weddings. In 2021, he signed his first song, “Just Be Here”, with Universal Music Group, with Matt Davies. In 2024, he bought a property in Durban North where he lives with his wife and five fur-kids. He has also been travelling regularly, playing multiple shows every week. “As I type this, I’m on a plane from Hong Kong to Bali, which is Matt’s and my first international tour,” he says.

Sound & Inspirations

Tim’s earliest inspirations were Goldfish and Mi Casa. He is also a big fan of Hans Zimmer, Rufus Du Sol and, funnily enough, Linkin Park. He grew up listening to a lot of Supertramp, Bee Gees, and later on Skrillex, Daft Punk, and Muse. “I think the connection between all of these artists is that their music is a lot deeper than your typical pop tracks.”

Shows & Festivals

“This year will be my eighth Splashy Fen performance, which has always been a highlight for me.” In 2016, Tim performed to 20,000 people with TiMO ODV at ECR Durban Day, and in 2023, he performed with Blxckie at Jo’burg Day. One of his more recent highlights was the “Luxurious Marble Circus” in Jo’burg and “Anywhere In Your City” last year also with Matt Davies. “One day, I’d love to visit the dance capital of the world, Ibiza, and more locally I’d really love to be part of Shimza’s ‘Kunye’”.

What’s Next?

“I’m currently renovating my cottage at home into a music studio, and when I get back from Bali, I’ll be working with an artist from Philadelphia to produce her entire album. I’ll also be working on some of my own new music, and I have some exciting new features coming out soon.”

Where Sea Meets Table

In Umdloti, dining isn’t just about the view – it’s about being on the shoreline itself, where sea breezes, sweeping ocean vistas and a collection of standout eateries create one of the North Coast’s most distinctive culinary experiences.

When it comes to true beachfront dining that can be breakfast, lunch, dinner or sundowners, there’s only one place that offers such an experience in the truest sense of the word – Umdloti. We don’t mean dining with a mere sea view; we mean dining on the beachfront – so close that you can feel the moisture rising off the sea and smell the salty air, with no buildings obstructing your view. Much of the quaint village’s 3.6km coastline is lined with a variety of eatery options, ranging from fine dining to pizzas and pub food, or coffee and croissants. The 12 eateries scattered between the tidal pool area in the north and the point on the south side truly cater to every taste and tone.

Clustered along the edges of the Umdloti tidal pool in the north, diners are spoilt for choice with no fewer than three diverse options – the swanky Sandbar Restaurant & Cocktail, Tasca Pizza, and Foam Coffee. Just past the traffic circle at the Umdloti Centre is the Total Garage’s Café Bonjour, local legend Afro’s Chicken Shop, and Seattle Coffee. Climb a flight

of stairs to the upper level, and you are faced with a choice of four options, all with spectacular 180-degree sea views. These include The Bush Tavern, the recently renovated and reimagined Rockpool (formerly Mundo Vida), the very luxe Bel Punto, and the new kid on the block, Salt & Citrus, which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A little further south, on a grass patch at the corner of South Beach Road and Margaret Bacon Avenue, is the locals’ favourite coffee spot – Doloras Coffee, where runners, surfers and dog walkers convene from sunrise to lunchtime for their daily dose of caffeine with a view. On your way out of Umdloti, at the White Sands Centre, you’ll find one of South Africa’s favourite franchises, Mozambik. Previously located at this centre and included in our collection of Umdloti foodie favourites, Casa Nostra is now at the nearby Marine Walk Mall in Salta.

We’ve partnered with three of the most popular restaurants and let them tell us, in their own words, what they are all about and why they should be top of your list on your next visit to this unique little seaside village.

SandBar Restaurant & Cocktails

Scenic Fine Dining

For over a decade, it has been one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most cherished seaside gathering spots. A true emblem of South African togetherness, good living and unforgettable moments perched right on the shores of the Indian Ocean.

This favourite spot invites you to pull up a chair, raise a glass and savour the simple joy of being with friends, family and loved ones against a backdrop of shimmering sea views and soulful vibes. Whether it’s an ice-cold beer at sunset, vibrant cocktails that rival the colours of the coastline, or mouthwatering dishes that tell stories

of local flair and global inspiration, SandBar is all about celebration. From tender pork ribs and fresh sushi to succulent prawns and burgers, the food isn’t just delicious, it's a reason to come together, linger longer and make memories. Add in great music, warm, laid-back service and that irresistible KZN beachside energy, and you’ve got more than a restaurant, you’ve got a place where friendships are toasted, laughter ripples like the tide, and every visit feels like a mini holiday. From the chefs to the wait staff, SandBar aims to continue capturing the heart of the coast, one unforgettable moment or delectable bite at a time. against soulful vibes. Whether it’s an

Bel Punto A Mediterranean Escape

Perched gracefully above the shoreline, where the Indian Ocean stretches endlessly into the horizon, Bel Punto is more than a restaurant; it is an experience.

From the moment you arrive, there is an effortless sense of escape. The ocean stretches endlessly beyond the glass-fronted balcony, sunlight glimmers across the water, and the atmosphere strikes that rare balance between sophistication and ease. It is casual chic at its finest, refined yet relaxed, polished yet welcoming. Bel Punto is a place to pause, exhale, and savour Mediterranean and Italian cuisine in a beachfront setting so captivating, you could easily imagine yourself anywhere in the world.

At its heart, the restaurant celebrates both lifestyle and legacy, honouring traditional Italian family recipes and time-tested formulas handed down over generations. The menu is rooted in authenticity, showcasing oceanfresh seafood, perfectly grilled meats, vibrant seasonal ingredients, and dishes crafted with respect for heritage and flavour. Each plate is generous, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully composed, designed to be savoured slowly, ideally with the sea breeze as your companion.

The wine list has been carefully curated to complement this coastal elegance, whether pairing a crisp white with seafood or a bold red alongside a flame-kissed cut from the grill. Leading with Purpose

Sholain Perumal is Redefining

In a world where ambition often competes with personal life, Sholain Perumal is proving that it’s possible to build a thriving business without letting go of what matters most. As the CEO of The Gold Bar, a fast-growing gold recycling company, she is redefining both entrepreneurship and modern motherhood on her own terms. The Gold Bar helps people unlock the value of their old gold jewellery. The company offers individuals the opportunity to trade in old, broken, or unwanted gold jewellery for cash.

Under Sholain’s leadership, with six stores countrywide, The Gold Bar has grown steadily, earning trust through transparency, fair pricing, a safe and secure environment, and a strong customer-first approach. But behind the polished brand and strategic growth lies a deeply personal story of balance, resilience, and determination. For Sholain, motherhood isn’t separate from her role as CEO; they’re intertwined. Her days often begin before sunrise, balancing baby duties with early meetings, and end with late-night planning sessions once her baby is asleep. It’s a demanding rhythm, but one she embraces wholeheartedly.

In addition to The Gold Bar, Sholain owns two Sensational Hair Nails & Beauty salons with her sister, Annelyn Perumal. Providing all your beauty needs under the same roof, with branches on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga and one in Cornubia Mall. Sholain believes that everyone has busy, stressful lives and deserves to be pampered, and that’s the environment she has created at

Success on Her Own Terms

both salons. Her journey hasn’t been without challenges. Building a business requires taking risks, long hours, and unwavering focus. There are moments of guilt, tradeoffs, and tough decisions. Yet, she approaches these challenges with honesty rather than perfection. “I can’t say that it is easy; there are a lot of challenges that pop up each day, but having a strong support structure is very important,” says Sholain. What sets Sholain apart is her refusal to accept the notion that success must come at the cost of family. Instead, she is crafting a narrative where ambition and motherhood coexist, each strengthening the other. “My son,” she says, “is my greatest blessing and motivation.” He is also her daily reminder of why she is building a legacy, something meaningful, sustainable, and empowering for herself and others. She wants to lead by example.

As The Gold Bar continues to grow, so does Sholain’s impact. She is not only creating economic opportunities through gold recycling but also quietly inspiring a new generation of women to pursue leadership without apology. Sholain continues to give back to the community through her charity initiatives and believes in changing the world, one act of kindness at a time. In an age that often glorifies hustle at all costs, Sholain Perumal’s story offers something different and more powerful. It’s a reminder that success isn’t about choosing between career and family. Sometimes, it’s about having the courage to build both, and redefining what balance truly looks like.

More Than Fitness

Through Adventure Obstacle Training, Claude and Trish Eksteen are helping people overcome hurdles – both on the course and in life.

WORDS JACQUELINE HERBST

The Durban North and Umhlanga communities are fortunate to have people like Claude and Trish Eksteen, whose work goes beyond fitness. Through their Adventure Obstacle Training (A.O.T.) and encouragement, they help people raise their perceived ceilings and overcome personal barriers.

They’ve built more than a training programme. At its heart is a family-centred community where people come together through fitness, form meaningful connections, build lasting relationships and, one life at a time, discover a place where they truly belong.

But what is A.O.T.? Trish explains that it is full-body functional fitness – oldschool, army-style training involving activities such as cargo nets, monkey bars and crawling. It requires participants to connect with their inner child and move in ways their bodies are naturally built to move.

The couple founded A.O.T. 11 years ago, on 2 March 2015, with their first venue being Northlands Primary School. In the early days, they would drive down from Hillcrest at 5:00 a.m. to sometimes train a grand total of one person who showed up. But they persevered and today have a vibrant community of obstacle adventurers who gather three afternoons a week at Danville Park Girls’ High School to get their adventure on. Claude and Trish are

accomplished athletes who have competed at the highest level locally and internationally in running and Obstacle Course Racing (OCR). Over the years, they have also fought hard for the sport of OCR in South Africa. Seeing it finally recognised by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and included in the 2028 Olympic Games as part of the modern pentathlon gives them great joy.

But A.O.T. is not about high-level athletes and achievements – although there are some top national racing snakes in the group.

“We love what we do,” Trish explains. “We see obstacles as a metaphor for life. It’s a map for what we do.”

Through A.O.T., they teach people to overcome their individual obstacles and fears. Participants often see improvements within weeks, which motivates them to keep going. The rewards and frustrations of tackling obstacles translate into daily life, while the training encourages people to step out of their comfort zones and take risks in a safe environment.

Many people have seen tectonic shifts in their personal lives since taking up the training.

“We even have a recovering addict who has transformed into a top-ten Warrior Race athlete nationally,” says Trish.

Claude and Trish have been competing in OCR events for 13 years. Between them, they hold the most Black Ops Elite wins in South African history, and Claude – a former international professional triathlete – has never lost an Impi race. Yet they view their greatest success as the families they have seen strengthened through participation in their training groups.

“We’ve seen families reunited and marriages restored,” says Trish. They are also involved in several pay-it-forward fundraising initiatives. Seven-time Dusi Canoe

“We love what we do”

Marathon champion, Martin Dreyer’s Change a Life Academy paddlers train free of charge at A.O.T. The academy empowers talented, underprivileged youth from KwaZulu-Natal’s Valley of a Thousand Hills through elite canoe training, producing top finishers in the Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Claude and Trish also offer kids’ training sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. Using the same equipment as the adults, the children do their own drills while the adults train alongside them. A.O.T. accommodates children aged five to 11 in the kids’ group,

while those 12 and older train with the adults.

While the athletes sweat it out and get stoked on adventure, grandparents often enjoy a late-afternoon picnic on the field or kick a ball around with the little ones, creating a truly family-first atmosphere.

Trish says they also host kids’ birthday parties and holiday clubs. “It really helps parents because it gets the kids out of the house and there’s no need for mum to clean up afterwards,” she says.

ATHE FISHES Walking With

nyone who knows me is aware that I hardly go outside. People have tried and failed to get me to try new experiences, but I finally decided that it was time to step out of that comfort zone and dive right in. And, of course, I had to take my team along for the swim.

Just in time for the Easter school break, Umhlanga Scuba is launching a new experience at uShaka Marine World. A different take on the “ocean walker”, they’re introducing the “surface supply” system, which enables you to walk along the floor of a tank in the aquarium, while

receiving air from a tank on the surface. The best part is that you just have to be older than ten years old, you don’t even need to know how to swim!

Based at uShaka Marine World, Umhlanga Scuba is a professional scuba diving company that offers a range of underwater experiences designed for both beginners and experienced divers. They conduct professional scuba diving training and certifications, ranging from beginner to advanced and speciality courses, all of which are internationally recognised. Their goal is to train confident, safe divers while sharing a

passion for the ocean and marine conservation. They also offer other experiences within uShaka, such as a beginner-friendly scuba dive in an aquarium tank. On arrival at Umhlanga Scuba’s shop, we all do a quick health and safety questionnaire before changing into custom-made rash vests and water shoes – all you have to do is show up in your favourite swimming costumes. To maximise time and avoid disappointment, booking a timeslot in advance is essential! At the site, we were given a safety briefing conducted by trained dive professionals. We were told how the whole process worked and what to expect, including the residents of the tank being curious about their two-legged visitors.

Next, we were each given a mask to try on and fit to our facial proportions, fitted with weighted belts and each was given our respective scuba demand valve to breathe from. The bravest of our group, Michaela, stepped forward to descend the ladder first, giving the rest of us courage. Carefully watching the Umhlanga Scuba

instructors guide people through the process, whilst another waits already in the tank to receive those climbing in. I was next up, trying to get used to breathing through my mouth first and gathering all the confidence I’d saved for a situation like this, with a 12-year-old and another team member, Dhivashni, watching on.

The water was cool and refreshing, a welcome reprieve from the 33°C weather. As land-bound animals, when we’re submerged, our first instinct is to panic and hold our breath. Getting used to being underwater and continuing to breathe took a while. I was urged to slow down and just focus on breathing before descending further. Eventually, I reached the floor and took a moment to appreciate the fish and the peacefulness found submerged. I also made a mental note to avoid disturbing the enormous manta ray resting in the corner. It didn’t take us long to get accustomed to bouncing around underwater with the fish swimming around us, not forgetting the small audience watching us from the other side of the glass.

Dhivashni was the last member to make it into the tank, and everyone cheered as she joined us. As someone who never attempted ocean walking, this was a huge accomplishment for her. Proving that just about anyone is welcome in the water! Just as she touched the ground, a manta ray, easily larger than she is, swooped overhead in welcome.

We took a few minutes to pose for some really cool photos and videos before each of us climbed the ladder back up to the surface, where we cheered and high-fived each other in celebration. Though the underwater portion of the experience typically lasts around 15 minutes, it really felt like we were down there for hours. Filled with manta rays, king fish and an overly friendly guitar shark, amongst other denizens, stepping into the tank was truly like being under the sea.

Walking back to the shop, we all found ourselves talking about coming back for another round, me included! We’d like to thank Umhlanga Scuba and uShaka Marine World for allowing us to enjoy this incredible experience with them.

Covering 3,000 sqm, the store features the Checkers FreshX concept, a modern layout and an expanded range of products and services.

With more choice, convenience, and value, shoppers can enjoy:

• A Meat Market with free-range chicken and restaurant-quality steak,

• A bakery offering artisanal breads and cakes,

• A dedicated Health and Wellness section,

• A wine cellar,

• A sushi bar,

• Fresh fruit and vegetables,

• A hot and cold foods deli, and

• A Money Market counter.

“We’re excited to bring Checkers’ premium offering to La Lucia Mall,” says Willem Hunlun, Chief Operating Officer at Checkers. “From our fresh and innovative product range to everyday supermarket prices, our goal is to give customers the kind of experience that keeps them coming back.”

“Checkers’ arrival is a win for our shoppers and for La Lucia Mall’s long-term strategy,” says Gavin Jones, Growthpoint’s Head of Retail Asset Management. “Their premium offering aligns perfectly with our consumer base, and their investment reflects growing confidence in the mall’s evolution as a high-performing retail destination.”

The opening further strengthens Checkers’ footprint in KwaZulu-Natal, providing customers with greater access to the quality, affordability, and excellence that earned Checkers the title of South Africa’s strongest brand in the 2025 Brand Finance South Africa Top 100 Report.

This comes as Checkers remains the country’s fastest-growing premium grocer for the fifth consecutive year. Over the last year and a half, the retailer had 75,000 more customers selecting to shop at Checkers stores or online every day.

The Brand Finance accolade is attributed to Checkers’ stellar performance in outstanding domestic brand perceptions, which includes perfect scores in ‘brand I love’, engagement, consideration, recommendation, and ‘word of mouth’. The study also found that consumers are satisfied with Checkers’ pricing regime.

“At the heart of the Checkers brand is the relentless pursuit of better and better for our customers. Every day, we live by the pulse of the incredibly inspiring people we serve, constantly looking for new ways to enable more South Africans to live better. We aim to offer unavoidable value and world-class shopping, made effortless. If, in doing so, customers choose us, we are thrilled, and when they reward us by embracing the brand, from Checkers Sixty60-themed kids’ parties to weddings, it’s the ultimate reminder of why we push boundaries, and we’ll keep raising the bar for them.” asserts Ilze Bylos, Chief Marketing Officer at the Shoprite Group.

Enduring Landmarks

Discover the history, beauty, and charm behind these iconic locations and attractions

Whalebone Pier

Built in 2007 as a stormwater outlet, it's designed to resemble a whale's skeletal frame, paying homage to whale migration patterns. The 80-metre pier offers spectacular ocean views and features beautiful mosaic art. It was named one of the world's most beautiful piers by CNN in 2014, and has since become a popular spot for fishing, sunset watching, and photography, attracting locals and tourists alike to the picturesque coast.

The Oyster Box Hotel

Originally built in 1863 as a navigational beacon, it was later transformed into a tea garden and then became a hotel in 1954. It became an iconic landmark known for its stunning, direct access to the ocean and its unique role as custodian of the famous red-and-white striped lighthouse located right in front of the property. The hotel has hosted celebrities and dignitaries, including Princess Charlene and Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2011. It is also featured as the only hotel on the South African Monopoly board.

KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence

Established in 1964 to protect beachgoers along KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline from shark attacks. It's the only organisation of its kind in the world, managing shark nets and drumlines across 37 beaches while conducting groundbreaking research on shark biology and conservation. Visitors can enjoy educational shark dissections, lifelike replicas at the Shark Museum, and boat tours that explain how to maintain safety gear. The Board also pioneers environmentally friendly tech like shark-repellent cables to minimise negative impacts on marine life.

Umhlanga Lighthouse

It was completed in 1954 to replace the failing Bluff Lighthouse and to guide ships along KwaZulu-Natal's coast. Standing 21 metres tall, it is iconic for its striking redand-white cylindrical design and stands prominently on the promenade near the Oyster Box Hotel. It was built in just four days and 19 hours, and guides ships with a 600,000-candela light, visible up to 24 nautical miles away. The lighthouse is still operational, and visitors can climb the 55 steps to the top for breathtaking glimpses of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding coastline.

Umhlanga Rocks Promenade

A scenic 3km coastal walkway in KwaZulu-Natal stretches along the beachfront, offering a stunning seascape. The promenade is a popular spot for walking, jogging, and taking in the sunset. It's also a great place to spot dolphins and whales during migration seasons. The area is rich in history, with the name "Umhlanga" derived from the isiZulu word for "place of reeds". The promenade is lined with restaurants, shops, and entertainment options, making it a bustling activity hub.

Umdloti Tidal Pool

Formed by rock barriers along the shore, this beloved gem offers safe swimming, snorkelling, and, at low tide, a haven for exploring marine life. The pool is filled by the Indian Ocean's tides, offering a safe and serene spot to soak up the sun. It provides a calm, shallow alternative to the surrounding ocean's strong currents and rip tides. Locals and tourists alike come here for picnics and relaxing days by the sea.

Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom

Inspired by traditional isiZulu culture, and designed to resemble a traditional Royal Kraal, the main building features a massive central thatched dome – the iZulu Theatre, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Its location on 48 hectares of coastal highland shows off breathtaking 360-degree views of the Indian Ocean and the Zululand hinterland. The entrance is guarded by massive Zulu and Wildebeest statues, and the casino ceiling is painted to mimic a perpetual African sunset. Sibaya offers over 1,214 slot machines, 48 gaming tables, and various entertainment options, including live shows and dining at restaurants. With luxurious accommodations at the Royal Sibaya Hotel and Sibaya Lodge, it's an ideal spot for relaxation and entertainment.

Umgeni River Bird Park

Opened in April 1984 by Dr Alan Abrey, it's home to over 700 birds from 200 species, including parrots, eagles, and hornbills. It is a vital conservation hub, breeding 17 of the 24 threatened bird species in its collection, including the endangered wattled crane. Famous for Africa's first free-flight bird show, the park offers an educational, close-up experience with exotic birds, making it a beloved Durban highlight. The park features walk-through aviaries, a butterfly garden, and a reptile house. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, animal encounters, and breathtaking views of the Umgeni River.

Japanese Gardens

Johnnie Walker Statue

Originally known as "Stride", it was created by sculptor David Wynne and was gifted to the people of Umdloti by Diageo, the makers of Johnnie Walker whisky, in 2022. Found at the Umdloti Tidal Pool, across from SandBar, the statue depicts the Johnnie Walker 'strider' character, symbolising progress and optimism. Frequently photographed by tourists, this dapper "striding man" has become a popular selfie spot. Beyond its charm, it adds to road safety by encouraging motorists to slow down near the busy crossing. It has become a beloved symbol of Umdloti’s spirit and a must-see attraction.

Created in the 1960s, the gardens showcase traditional Japanese design, with koi ponds, wooden bridges, bamboo groves, and stunning plant life. This iconic landmark is a symbol of peace and harmony, reflecting the beauty of Japanese culture. Visitors can stroll along winding paths, take in the tranquil atmosphere, and enjoy the beautiful floral displays. The gardens host cultural events and workshops, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking relaxation and cultural enrichment.

The Best

in Africa

Rainmaker Marketing

At a gala awards ceremony in London, Rainmaker Marketing’s award-winning campaign for Salt Rock City has been named Best Development Marketing Africa at the International Property Awards, announced on 16 January 2026.

The prestigious accolade follows Rainmaker Marketing’s recent

Best Development Marketing South Africa win for the same Salt Rock City submission, elevating the campaign from national recognition to continental supremacy and firmly positioning the KwaZulu-Natal-based agency amongst Africa’s leading property marketing specialists.

Recognised as one of the most respected benchmarks in the global

real estate industry, the International Property Awards are judged by an independent panel of more than 80 senior industry professionals spanning development, architecture, marketing and finance. Winning the coveted 5-Star award at a continental level places Rainmaker Marketing in an elite category of agencies, delivering work that not only meets but also exceeds international standards.

According to Stefan Botha, Director at Rainmaker Marketing, the award is significant not only for the agency, but for South Africa’s property and marketing industries as a whole. “To win Best in Africa as a South African agency is an exceptional honour. It reinforces that world-class work is being produced locally and that our thinking, execution and results can compete with and outperform global peers,” says Botha.

The award-winning Salt Rock City campaign, developed in collaboration with the Devmco Group, is underpinned by Rainmaker Marketing’s fully integrated, insightled approach that combines indepth market research, strategic positioning, creative execution, digital performance marketing and sales enablement into a single, measurable system. The campaign achieved outstanding commercial success, including the sale of 100 plots on launch day, and has become a benchmark for largescale development marketing in the region.

“This recognition affirms our belief that successful property marketing doesn’t sit in silos,” Botha explains. “It’s the convergence of research, marketing and sales that is

supported by technology and data, which ultimately creates real impact. That integrated approach is what continues to differentiate Rainmaker Marketing locally and internationally.”

Beyond agency success, Botha notes that the award reflects broader positive momentum within the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast property market. “This award is also a reflection of the growth and confidence we’re seeing on the North Coast. Developments like Salt Rock City demonstrate the scale of opportunity in the region, and it’s encouraging to see international recognition shining a spotlight on what’s happening here.”

The Best in Africa title further reinforces Rainmaker Marketing’s position as an industry leader across multiple spheres of the property sector, from research and strategy to marketing execution and sales, and strengthens its growing international footprint. One thing is for sure: no day at Rainmaker Marketing is a “typical day”. Different clients and campaigns are at different stages, so some days they focus on launch strategy and sales, while others are all about research, execution and performance analysis. Through it

all, they collaborate across teams, review insights, and make decisions that ensure every milestone contributes to the bigger picture of the campaign and the actual bottom line of the project. It’s this mix of adaptability, collaboration, and focus on outcomes that shapes how they work every day and on every project.

This latest accolade adds to Rainmaker Marketing’s expanding list of international honours and continues to elevate South Africa’s reputation as a source of innovation and excellence within the global property landscape.

Looking into MEDICAL LOSS WEIGHT

While GLP-1 treatments can be effective, experts stress they are not risk-free and should not be used without proper oversight

What you need to know about the risks and rewards before taking the jabs

Originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 injections such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro have, in recent years, also been licensed for weight loss. They have since become powerful tools that have revolutionised medical weight-management treatment.

However, the surge in popularity of GLP-1 injections has been matched by a growing number of cautionary cases – many tied to people using the injections without proper medical guidance. International reports have highlighted users ending up severely dehydrated, with ongoing nausea and vomiting after taking incorrect doses or increasing them too quickly. In some instances, patients have been admitted with complications linked to electrolyte imbalances and acute pancreatitis, a known but serious risk that should be screened for before treatment begins. Significantly reduced appetite can, in some cases, lead to patients eating too little, resulting in muscle loss or vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Doctors are also raising concerns about the rise in counterfeit or poorly handled products being sold online or through informal networks. Without proper storage and regulation, there is no guarantee of what formula patients are injecting. Closer to home, practitioners say some users are treating these drugs as a quick fix – skipping basic health checks, ignoring warning signs, or continuing treatment despite worsening side effects.

There is also a growing conversation around the mental toll. Rapid weight loss without proper support can lead to unhealthy eating patterns and, in some cases, weight regain once the injections stop. While GLP-1 treatments can be effective, experts stress they are not risk-free and should not be used without proper oversight.

Curious to learn more about how they work and how to use them responsibly, we spoke to associate dietitian Claire McHugh. The efficacy of the injections lies in mimicking the effects of the hormone GLP-1, which is

released when we eat a meal and gives us the sensation of being satisfied. When taken as an injection, McHugh says it helps patients feel less hungry and more satisfied after smaller portions, reducing food intake and additional snacking, thereby decreasing caloric intake, which can lead to weight loss.

People who are less sensitive to the hormone may have a naturally bigger appetite and require larger meals to feel satisfied. GLP-1 injections help curb their appetite by increasing the hormone’s concentration, leading to a feeling of fullness even after smaller meals. In simple terms, it comes down to energy in versus energy out.

It is encouraging to note that, worldwide, obesity is increasingly being recognised as a chronic disease, which means patients may need long-term or lifelong access to weight-loss treatment. While GLP-1 medications are a powerful tool for achieving weight loss through reduced hunger and cravings, they have also been shown to improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of heart disease.

However, as with most medications, McHugh warns there can be side effects, as mentioned above. For this reason, it is essential that these medications are used only under the supervision of a dietitian or other medical professionals, who can ensure patients consume enough protein, vitamins and minerals, guide portion sizes, and help establish sustainable, long-term eating habits.

McHugh says it is also important to identify and address the eating habits that led to weight gain in the first place while using the medication, to reduce the risk of regaining weight once the treatment stops.

A significant barrier to access remains affordability, as the medication is generally not covered by medical aid.

She also cautions against using black-market products that may be more affordable but have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and could therefore be potentially harmful.

Paws for Momenta

Meet some local canine friends, each with their own unique quirks and charms that steal hearts and snuggle into our lives.

Hello! I’m Zoey, a three-month-old Chow Chow mix and a fluffy little ball of energy. I love water; if there’s a bowl nearby, I’ll probably tip it over just to lie in the puddle and cool off. Rainy days mean splashing fun. Car rides are exciting too, especially with the warm breeze in my fur. My favourite place is the beach where I run in the sand, sniff the salty air and paddle my paws in the waves.

We're Pepper and Yuri, the dynamic bull terrier duo! We're best buds and do everything together, like our epic beach trips! We love swimming, taking on the waves, and chasing after empty plastic bottles in the water. We've got a bad case of separation anxiety, so we like to follow our hooman around the whole day. We'll try to squeeze our chunky bodies into one kennel so we can cuddle. We're a package deal, so you're hanging with both of us.

We're a pair of mini long-haired Dachshunds, with me (Honey) being the ultra-mini tiny tot. Biscuit thinks he’s the boss, but let's be real, he's a total softie. We're obsessed with walks, especially on the Umhlanga Promenade. When our hooman says "walk", I try to put on my own harness, and Biscuit gets so excited that he runs to the front door and gets grumpy if we take too long. Biscuit is all about the chicken and steak, and I’m always trying to make everyone happy. I’m not picky; I’ll eat anything, including probiotics and ice cubes on hot days. I also love being treated like a baby – carried, kissed, the works.

Zoey here, an Africanis–Golden retriever mix, and I'm a bit of a diva, if I do say so myself. I'm really good at pretending I can’t hear when my name is being called, but if they just shake a snack packet, I'm there. I'll give them a cute little head tilt and not budge when they call me, but show me a treat, and I'm a speed demon. You could say I'm a master of ignoring, but a slave to snacks.

Day OutMum’ s In Umhlanga

Instead of buying trinkets, let mum personalise her own jewellery. Bellure Jewellery is a cute charm bar experience that hosts events and does callouts. Suppose you need something a little unique for your event (or Mother’s Day lunch). It’s the sweetest and most fun that everyone can enjoy, plus they will have a pretty keepsake from this day.

Offering modern (and scrumptious) Mediterranean cuisine and fine wines, Cafe 1999 Umhlanga is sure to make a delightful spread. And best of all, you have someone else cooking for you!

The Oyster Box Hotel has three events to choose from this year. Old Town Italy

THE ART OF AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE

At Old Town Italy Umhlanga, every detail is thoughtfully curated to create a space where great food, creativity and genuine hospitality come together. It is more than a dining destination – it is a place where mornings begin with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee, afternoons are spent lingering over beautiful meals, and evenings unfold in a warm, welcoming atmosphere filled with conversation and connection.

Our coffee is at the heart of the experience, carefully crafted by passionate baristas. Each cup is a celebration of quality and consistency, whether grabbing a daily takeaway or

settling in for a slower start to the day. Perfectly paired with something from our bakery, the moment becomes even more special. From flaky croissants and delicate pastries to freshly baked breads and indulgent sweet treats, our bakery showcases the artistry of traditional baking, using the finest ingredients and time-honoured techniques to deliver flavour in every bite.

Food at Old Town Italy remains rooted in authentic Italian tradition – simple, generous and made to be shared. Our handcrafted pastas and signature pizzas are prepared with care and attention, bringing together fresh, seasonal ingredients and bold, comforting flavours. Every

dish reflects our love for quality and our commitment to creating memorable dining experiences. What truly sets us apart, however, is our team. Our staff bring energy, knowledge and genuine warmth to the floor, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and looked after from the moment they arrive.

Beyond the restaurant, Old Town Italy Umhlanga has become known for its interactive and creative experiences. Our popular pasta and pizza classes offer guests the opportunity to step into the world of Italian cooking – learning, laughing and enjoying the process of making something from scratch. These classes are perfect for date nights, celebrations or teambuilding events, turning time spent together into something meaningful and hands-on. For those looking for a more relaxed and expressive outing, our Sip & Paint events combine art, food and wine in a social and inspiring setting. Guests can unwind, get creative and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that has become synonymous with our brand.

Our newest addition, the floral arrangement class, brings a fresh dimension to the Old Town Italy experience. This beautifully curated session allows guests to explore the art of floral design while enjoying our signature hospitality, making it ideal for special occasions, group gatherings, or simply trying something new.

Old Town Italy Umhlanga is a space where people come together to eat, create and connect, a place where every visit feels familiar, every meal is memorable, and every experience is made with heart.

A United Effort for the High Seas

In January 2026, a historic milestone for ocean protection was reached when the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement (also known as the High Seas Treaty) officially entered into force. The high seas are the parts of the ocean that don’t belong to any one country. They begin beyond a country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) (about 200 nautical miles from shore) and cover nearly half the surface of the Earth. The high seas help regulate the global climate, absorb about 30% of the carbon dioxide we produce and more than 80% of excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases, and support fish stocks and life cycles that feed millions of people. Even though we can’t see it, what happens out there affects weather systems, food security and climate stability everywhere.

A South African-grown conservation NGO, the WILDTRUST, has been actively contributing to growing regional and international engagement around the agreement. In December 2025, Samkelisiwe Danisa and I joined around 100 representatives from African states, alongside global and regional organisations and civil society, at the Regional BBNJ Agreement Workshop in Ethiopia. The gathering aimed to strengthen

regional understanding of the treaty and explore opportunities for collaboration in advancing its implementation.

Momentum is also building around the possibility of establishing a high seas Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Western Indian Ocean subantarctic region. In June 2025, on the sidelines of the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, a scientific and technical workshop explored the feasibility of linking existing subantarctic MPAs in the waters of South Africa, France and Australia.

Alongside this growing policy momentum, WILDTRUST’s Future Leaders Initiative, which leads the youth programmes of the marine

conservation arm of the organisation, has secured support through a one-year grant from the High Seas Alliance to strengthen the capacity of South African youth and young ocean leaders to understand, engage with and advocate for the effective implementation of the BBNJ Agreement.

To kick off this work, the Future Leaders team hosted a BBNJ Awareness Webinar on 16 January 2026 in partnership with Sustainable Ocean Alliance Tanzania and the High Seas Alliance, engaging more than 50 participants across Africa. This was followed by a youth-led, in-person workshop and a Durban Promenade walk on the day the treaty entered into force, celebrating this important milestone in ocean governance.

The Ownership SHIFT

Why Just Doing Your Job Isn’t Enough

WORDS SEAN STRINGER

Moving from a culture of tasks to a culture of results

Walk into any boardroom along Umhlanga Ridge, and you’ll likely hear the same frustration: “My team is talented, but I still feel like I’m the only one driving the bus.” It’s a common sentiment for business owners who find themselves stuck in the trap where every minor decision still lands on their desk. The missing ingredient isn't usually effort or skill – it’s the ability to transfer ownership of tasks from the business owner to the team member. This movement happens when team members shift from merely being responsible for their tasks, and begin to hold themselves accountable for the results.

The responsibility trap

We often use the words interchangeably, but there is a vital distinction. Responsibility is the obligation to act – it’s the list of tasks in a job description. Accountability, however, is the ownership of the outcome. Think of it this way: a team member can be responsible for sending out a marketing email and tick it off their list, but the accountable team member is the one who notices the open rates are low and proactively suggests a new strategy to fix it.

One is focused on the clock, the other is focused on the goal. When a team only feels responsible, they stop working when the task is “done”. When they are accountable, they don’t stop until the result is achieved.

Setting the rules of the game

You cannot demand accountability in a vacuum. It requires what we call the “Rules of the Game”: the clearly defined standards and cultural expectations that everyone buys into. Without these rules, people play it safe. They stay small and stick to their lists because they aren't sure where the boundaries are.

True ownership flourishes when you involve the team in the decision-making process. When people help build the plan, they are far more likely to own the execution. By setting SMART KPIs – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound – you remove the guesswork. Success is no longer a matter of opinion or whether the “boss is happy”; it’s a visible, shared metric.

The power of the debrief

A winning team uses feedback not as a tool for blame, but as a platform for learning. Regular debriefs allow the team to look at the data, own the outcomes (both good and bad), and pivot quickly. It’s about creating a space where saying “I missed the mark, and here is how I’ll fix it” is seen as a sign of leadership, not weakness.

When you foster this environment, the business’s rhythm changes. You stop being a collection of individuals doing jobs and start being a team that owns a vision. Responsibility is about the action; accountability is about the win.
