The increasing appearance of jackets in the SEEHOA offices during the last two weeks reminds me that we are in the last month of autumn. The chill in the air definitely signals winter’s impending arrival! May, of course, is a month when we celebrate mothers: the women who birthed us, and the women who are motherly figures to us, be it teachers, older sisters and aunts, grandmothers and good friends. At Simbithi, we also celebrate the forms of motherhood we find in nature: a newborn duiker teetering nervously behind its mother, or - a favourite on the Simbithi Birding group - a stern Mama Duck standing guard as her flock of ducklings toddles across Ladlau Drive. From my team and me, Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for all you do!

Our last long weekend was, unfortunately, disrupted by several interruptions to water and electricity supply. This is understandably frustrating for us, and for the greater areas of Ballito and Salt Rock also affected. As we have shared recently, our Simbithi Utility Management Services (SUMS) model remains relevant. The primary challenge with this model, however, is the KwaDukuza Municipality’s decision not to grant us the right to access or improve our electrical infrastructure. Without this authority, the utility disruptions remain out of our control. Engagements continue in this regard with KDM and appropriate stakeholders.

You may have noticed activity at our gates, with the renovation of our recycling stations. We understand this may pose a slight inconvenience in the short to medium-term but assure you the renovated stations will be worth the wait. Thank you for your patience. Similarly, the renovations to Main and West Gates will

commence shortly. We look forward to bringing these gates in line with the aesthetics already employed at the South, North and Ballito Gates.

Lastly, in terms of projects, the repair to the drainage line below Guineafowl Dam will shortly begin gathering momentum. You will recall we received approval to rehabilitate areas affected during the April 2022 heavy rainfall, including scour in forested areas close to the Cormorant Dam, desilting Cormorant Dam and erosion on the Mfuleni Trail close to the Fish Eagle Dam.

Wendy Bezuidenhout had a visit from this Crowned Eagle in Albizia Close, recently. The bird was later identified as UFO, a female Crowned Eagle that spends a significant portion of her time at Simbithi when she is not at her home in Zimbali.

Sharing the Responsibility

Managing the safety of a community of Simbithi’s magnitude is a task our team undertakes with commitment and integrity. With this in mind, it is important to remember that Simbithi’s security is a shared responsibility: all who call Simbithi home play an integral part in ensuring our Estate remains safe and secure.

SECURITY

Residents, if you witness any suspicious or unlawful activity, or activity that contravenes our Estate rules, it is important to report this to the Control Room immediately. This ensures our security team is able to attend to infractions swiftly.

Our speed boards will be in place and, if you are found driving faster than permitted on Simbithi, one of our security officers may stop you to engage with you.

Please Drive Safely

Recently, our security team evaluated speeding statistics captured since the beginning of the year. Given the increasing number of vehicles caught exceeding our speed limit of 40 km/h, and in an effort to increase awareness, our team will be out on Simbithi’s roads this Easter weekend.

Residents, this is for your protection, and that of our children, wildlife, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. We ask that you adhere to our speed limit and, if stopped, engage respectfully with our security officers. Thank you for your cooperation.

Pets

With the right to keep dogs on Simbithi comes the responsibility of ensuring you follow the Estate rules, as set out in Clause 7.

“All pets must be kept within the confines of the Owner or Lessee’s private property, and when outside the Owner or

Lessee’s private property, must always be on a physical leash and under the control of a responsible person. Fouling by pets on the Association’s property or the property of any other third party, must be removed immediately by the responsible pet Owner. (For this purpose, pet Owners must carry a scooper or plastic bags whenever walking their pets outside their private property).”

We were recently honoured to be invited to the Durban University of Technology (DUT)’s annual Employer Awards, where we received an award! Simbithi is a proud partner of DUT’s Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL) initiative which enables students in their final year of study to gain valuable industry experience through workplace learning. We have had the pleasure of hosting several DUT learners across departments, including Thabiso Nkosi, who has been part of our Human Resources team for the year.

We have hosted Thabiso Nkosi as a Human Resources intern for the last year, and our HR Manager, Justine Mia, sits on DUT’s HR advisory board.

The award recognises Simbithi as an employer of choice, and thanks us for partnering with the faculty to enhance student experience in industry.

World Migratory Bird Day –

10 May

A migratory bird is classified as one that regularly flies on seasonal, long-distance journeys, often through breeding and nonbreeding areas. The birds migrate due to availability of food, changes in climate and their reproductive cycles.

Endangered Species Day

Migratory birds are integral to maintaining healthy eco-systems, and it is important that their habitats are well-suited to their journeys,

If a species of animal or plant is at serious risk of extinction, it is classified as endangered. This day is dedicated as a global day of action, meant to reflect on how fragile the natural world is and how vital biodiversity is. The most common list used to distinguish how extinct a species is, is the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which lists species as either Extinct, Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened or Least Concern.

ENVIRONMENT

Did you know that Simbithi is home to a critically endangered species? The Pickersgill’s Reed Frog is a petite amphibian whose habitat is fast declining. It was discovered in Simbithi in 2003 and we are one of very few sites where one may find it.

I hope this e-Newsletter finds you well and rested after a few weeks of public holidays and long weekends. Let’s begin with golf, and I am sure we are all still basking in the incredible atmosphere from our Club Champs. Congratulations have been echoed, but let’s hear it once again for our team, golf committee, players, spectators and sponsors. This was truly epic.

A maintenance and repair program will be worked out with the golf committee, our maintenance team and our service provider. We are also considering the implementation of a Halfway House application order system with a resident service provider, which aims to improve production speed through technology. Although still in its infancy, it could significantly change the way food is offered at Halfway. Gremlins may be expected but we will work on the solution together.

Already, the streamlined menu spearheaded by the golf committee has provided for improved flow in terms of production time. Food items that took longer to eat have been reduced. Executive Chef

Looking ahead to this month, we have our Club Real estate 9-hole shoot out on the last Thursday of every month, taking place on 29 May 2025. This is a great event open to members and visitors, and we’d love to see you out on the course. Speaking of the course, a full assessment is presently being conducted on all the cart pathways.

Louis Lesch has taken members’ suggestions into account and, while still in keeping with the brief, will roll out quick, easy options for counter demand.

Rounding up golf, our current business model based around our carts will be reviewed this year. Cart suppliers will be contacted,

Moving onto food and beverage, recruitment for full-time Food and Beverage Manager, and Restaurant Managers, continues. Our advertising process has produced a few candidates, and we continue to work in this space to find the right candidates. Our refreshed menu will launch this month, and we hope you like it! We have spent time training our waitrons on the new menu and improved service techniques, which we are confident will enhance your Fig Tree experience.

We are in the midst of an extensive maintenance programme at the Club, with refrigeration, airconditioner servicing, painting and cleaning underway. We have also replaced the cushions on the deck furniture.

There is cause for much celebration at Simbithi, as our very own Executive Chef Godfrey Kinyanjui was officially inducted into the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs at the end of April. The Chaîne is one of the world’s oldest international gastronomic orders, originating in Paris in 1950.

Welcome, again, to this month’s edition of the Simbithi e-Newsletter! The cooler weather is finally on its way – and we all know just how magnificent the upcoming months of May and June are in our part of the world.

As you are all well aware by now, continuous improvement of the Simbithi golf experience is a key focus of your committee. This month, I want to touch upon a few (of the many) improvement initiatives we are currently pursuing. You may have noticed that some changes have been made to the Halfway House. In order to address ongoing concerns around “flow” and its knockon impact on our Pace of Play initiative, the outside food preparation/service area has (at

least for now) been discontinued. While the committee is aware that some members have been disappointed by its termination, the clear intention is to ensure that the overall food offering at the Halfway House is materially enhanced and improved to a point where we can claim a menu which is the best in KZN. This process, with support from interested members, is currently underway with Executive Chef Louis Lesch and we intend to achieve a marked improvement in the overall offering in the near future. Additionally, we are also exploring an app which will allow on-course pre-ordering of your meal items. Finally, we are driving some refurbishments of the Halfway House Facility itself – which should be noticeable shortly.

FroM THE GoLF CHAIrpErSoN

Another exciting initiative with a short-term horizon is the establishment, adjacent to the car park, of a new bag drop facility. Its establishment will formalise and streamline the bag-drop process for those of us (and our visitors) who bring our bags in our vehicles.

While our porters do the best they can in this regard, the current process is still a bit “hit and miss” and the new facility will optimise this process significantly. The design is currently with one of our architects and will be consistent, aesthetically, with our new porters’ concierge desk.

LaDies’ Captain

Simbithi Ladies have had a successful few weeks. This month, I will start with the “SimbithiStingers”, as Michelle Dold has affectionately named our league team. We played two more fixtures during the last month against the Zimbali and Umhlali teams, both of which were away games for Simbithi. I am pleased to report that we beat Zimbali 10-2 and drew to Umhlali 6-6, with both matches played in the most amazing spirit! It is always such a joy to play our North Coast neighbours.

Our Tuesday ladies have had fun during the past few weeks, playing some interesting formats, including a Scramble Drive and an April Fools Better Ball. Amos Sibiya, our Head Greenkeeper and the golf team were roped in and we played a few dirty tricks on the ladies, including putting up a fake closest to the pin and two pins on the 6 th hole. The ladies were happily “April Fooled” and took on the challenge! Our Queen of the Greens, Tammy Taylor even had five birdies and Tammy and Jade Shepherd went on to win the day.

Speaking of queens, the crowning of our club Champs was an amazing event and we continue to celebrate our Club Champion and GOLD Division winner, Tammy Taylor, our SILVER Division winner Noelene Morrison, BRONZE winner Jade Shepherd and our COPPER Division winner Wendy Smith.

Great news about some of our Simbithi Lady residents, Olivia Wood and Kamaya Moodliar who represented Team SA in the All Africa Challenge Trophy at Windhoek Country Club recently. Well done to Olivia who was the overall individual winner of the All-Africa Challenge Trophy, and to Team South Africa who celebrated a resounding victory!

We had four Simbithi Ladies shining on the KZN golf scene in the KZNLGA Amateur Championship, including Taylor Hope who came second in round one and made it through to the last eight in the Silver Division. Kayla Dold represented Simbithi

in the Bronze Division and also came second in round one. Kayla won her first round in the Matchplay, taking her through to the top four!

Olivia Wood and Kamaya Moodliar who played in the Championship Division came 1st and 4th respectively. They went on to the Matchplay and both ladies went through to the semi-finals where they faced each other.

Olivia Wood went through to the final round and won the Championship. Well done, Olivia!

I feel inspired by the younger golf talent coming out of our Estate. The future for Ladies’ Golf looks bright.

It was a rousing conclusion to our Easter Weekend at Simbithi, with the Easter Bunny making a final stop on the Deck. Most of the snags at the SCC sports complex have now been resolved, including the door problems and darkened film over the windows at the squash courts. Unfortunately, we have had further incidents of the floors being discoloured by inappropriate footwear, notwithstanding the fact that signage for non-marking shoes has been put up on the doors. Please keep an eye out for the offending parties and help us ensure this unacceptable practise is not repeated.

The Dolphin Coast summer league which started in midFebruary, involving more than 100 players,

SQUASH

was concluded last week. It was very pleasing to see many Simbithi residents dust off their squash kits and get on the courts, reminding themselves what a great game squash is. We have welcomed a handful of external members joining our club, and the door remains open to further externals. Like golf, Simbithi has taken the decision to allow a limited number of external members to join squash, bowls and tennis, which we believe will add value to each of the sections.

Matches will be played on a home and away basis. The first and third division play on Thursday evenings and second division takes place on Tuesday evenings. We are close to finalising our squash ladder which will help us select the teams and ensure that players are playing at the appropriate position. This will help guarantee competitive matches.

The main Dolphin Coast Squash winter league commences on 6 May 2025. Simbithi will enter one team in each of the three leagues: A, B, and C division. Ladies and men play in the same league, slotting in a team according to their strength. There will be four players per team for a fixture, which starts at 18:00.

Further communication will happen via our Simbithi Squash Club WhatsApp group, so please contact the Club if you would like to join this group and stay abreast of the squash scene.

From the Bowls Rink

As the contractors completed the snag list for the Sports Complex, several factors were tackled after the December season. First on the list was the settlement challenge at the bowls rink. As the rink is built on new material, a degree of settlement was to be expected. On return, the contractors cut back into the base of the rink to ensure the

replaced material would align with the layer works. Each layer had to be replicated to ensure consistency.

Once the layer work was completed and compacted to the required percentage the synthetic surface was re-laid.

Monday to Thursday 11am - 3pm provider will be custom rolling and filling with silica to ensure a seamless join. After meeting with the sports representatives for bowls it was agreed that social bowls would be the focus for now, allowing our community to ease into the facility. Already, several “parties” have been held in this space.

The idea of a bowls party is not new, and several residents have already taken up this sport socially. We encourage you to book a session: at R30 for three hours it certainly is a very affordable sporting activity. We are presently marking the lanes; materials were ordered in from outside the province. Feel free to book your lane on ClubMaster.

From the Tennis Courts

Unfortunately, pooling water remains a challenge after a downpour. The contractors are addressing this issue. For reference, our three tennis courts and the Padel courts drain into stormwater pipes near the gym which, in turn, feed into the attenuation tank below the lap pool.

Usage at the courts is still lower than we would like, and playing “cards” have been introduced to assist regular players. If you would like to play for the year from 06:00 and 17:00 may do so at a cost of R800, while R1800 will get you unlimited play. This card will appeal to those who would like to play in the evening when it’s cooler and under lights. You may get your card from the Pro Shop or the kiosk at the Sports Complex. We entered into our new service level agreement with Poolwise and, with that, has come the expertise required to manage the family and lap pools.

We have ordered lane dividers for the lap pool, which will be installed soon. Please remember, the lap pool membership is annual, and you may sign up at the HOA Welcome Centre. A reminder, also, that the lap pool will not be heated. The external concrete base is exposed to the sun throughout the afternoon. We watch the flood line very carefully and regularly backwash, especially after heavy rain.

The lap pool is an excellent for retaining your fitness and we encourage you to book a lane through ClubMaster.

From the Padel Courts

Padel continues to be the ‘life of the party’ and growing every day. We have switched to the Playtomic app for booking, which has resulted in an increase in bookings, allowing our members to use rankings on the app. If you have not linked your profile to Simbithi’s, yet, please come and see one of our friendly sports supervisors at the Pavilion deck.

We hosted an Easter tournament, which was very wellreceived by all who participated. On Friday afternoon, we had the beginners to intermediate men play, followed by the advanced men, who really put on a show! It really was amazing afternoon of Padel to watch. Saturday

morning, the courts came alive with the ladies, who certainly ensured they were not outdone by the men.

Thank you to all who came out, played and supported the Easter egg drive. Simbithi, you really showed the true meaning of giving and bringing happiness to those who need it.
