What you need to know about the upcoming property inspections
Seaward Estate Management would like to inform all homeowners that routine compliance inspections will be conducted across the Estate. they are carried out in accordance with the seaward Estate Architectural and Landscaping Codes and form part of our ongoing commitment to achieving and maintaining the high standards and integrity of our community.
the primary objective of these inspections is to ensure that the external appearance of all properties remains consistent with the Architectural Code. this helps preserve the overall aesthetic character, property values, and quality living environment within seaward Estate.
In addition to architectural compliance, a qualified horticulturalist Nkululeko Mkhize will be present to conduct garden inspections. this includes:
• Assessing overall garden upkeep and maintenance
• Identifying alien or invasive plant species within properties
• Providing professional advice on suitable alternatives and best gardening practices for good maintenance.

Highlights from the Dog & Pet Care Event
This event, hosted by Kerry Janke of sAFE Fostering Network, brought together pet owners and animal lovers for an educational and engaging session focused on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and canine behaviour. Many attendees left with a deeper understanding of pet care and a common
reflection: “Why didn’t I know this sooner?” the event featured valuable contributions from industry experts, including Dr steve Wimberley of Westville Veterinary Hospital, dog trainer and behaviourist sandy Cammell, and Robert Kalytta of My Pet Microchipping. their combined expertise provided practical guidance for improving the wellbeing
of pets and strengthening the bond between animals and their owners.
sterilisation: a responsible Choice
One of the key discussions centred around the importance of sterilisation. Dr Wimberley highlighted that sterilising pets helps reduce the growing number of unwanted animals and prevents serious

health conditions such as mammary tumours, pyometra, prostate disease, and testicular cancer. sterilisation can also reduce hormone-driven behaviours, including aggression, roaming, fighting, and territorial marking.
While there are nominal risks associated with sterilisation, such as weight gain or urinary incontinence, these can generally be controlled through proper veterinary care and healthy lifestyle management. Early sterilisation for female dogs was strongly encouraged, particularly before the first heat cycle, while larger male breeds may sometimes benefit from delayed sterilisation to support proper development. Owners were reminded that every pet is unique, and veterinary guidance is essential.
vaccination saves Lives these were emphasised as an important aspect of preventative pet healthcare. Core vaccines protect pets from lifethreatening diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. special attention was given to the high incidence of rabies and parvovirus in KwaZulu-Natal, where cases remain significantly higher than in many other provinces.
Parvovirus was described as highly contagious and capable of surviving in the environment for extended periods, making prevention through vaccination far safer and more cost-effective than treatment. Rabies, a disease that affects both animals and humans,
was also highlighted as a critical concern.
microchipping & identification
Microchipping was presented as a simple but essential step in responsible pet ownership. It significantly increases the chances of lost or stolen pets being reunited with their families. However, owners were reminded that updating their contact information is equally important to ensure the effectiveness of the system.
training & behaviour
Dog trainer sandy Cammell shares practical advice on canine behaviour and training, reinforcing that training is a lifelong commitment and should form part of everyday life.
Positive, reward-based training methods were strongly encouraged, as harsh or fear-based techniques can damage trust and create long-term behavioural issues.
Consistency, routine, and clear boundaries help dogs feel secure and understand expectations. Owners were reminded that dogs are not born understanding the human world, and it is the owner’s responsibility to guide them with patience and kindness. the importance of selecting a dog suited to a household’s lifestyle and energy levels was also discussed. Adoption was strongly encouraged, provided owners are prepared for the long-term commitment involved.
daily Care & responsible ownership
Dogs require more than just space – they need daily walks, mental stimulation, enrichment, and human interaction. Walking helps dogs feel calm, connected, and secure, while activities such as sniffing and training provide important mental exercise.
Responsible public etiquette was also addressed. Owners were encouraged to keep dogs on a lead (unless recall training is reliable), respect shared spaces, and always clean up after their pets.

that informed decisions – including sterilisation, vaccination, microchipping, proper training, and adoption – help create a healthier, safer, and more compassionate community for both pets and people.
Residents were encouraged to continue supporting local animal welfare organisations, consider adoption and fostering opportunities, and to seek professional assistance when behavioural or health concerns arise.

Commonly known as Leko, Nkululeko Mkhize is a qualified horticulturist, and is pleased to be taking on the new role of Environment and Landscaping Manager.
Leko previously served as an Environmental Officer on another estate for four years after completing a degree in sustainable Horticulture. He has a strong passion for the natural environment
and enjoys an outdoor lifestyle. He is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Estate’s landscaping while ensuring that all environmental practices align with established policies and protocols. Leko’s goal is to elevate the Estate’s environment, strengthen the relationship between residents and nature, and ensure consistent environmental compliance through out seaward.
